Lebanon's Postwar Reconstruction Is at a Standstill

NABATIEH, Lebanon - After more than a year of tit-for-tat airstrikes and several months of higher-intensity combat, the devastating war between Hezbollah and Israel ended with a ceasefire in late November 2024. In addition to the nearly 4,000 people killed during the conflict, the fighting caused an estimated $6.8 billion in damage to housing and infrastructure. Nearly 120,000 homes have been destroyed or damaged, and nearly 900,000 people had been displaced at the height of the fighting in November. Lebanon's newly formed government now faces an immediate challenge: resettling those who were displaced while ensuring that reconstruction is efficient, transparent and free of corruption. Zohair Hussain Jawad, a 50-year-old Lebanese-American dual citizen, left the U.S. in 2005 to settle in Nabatieh, in southern Lebanon. A year later, he lived through the 2006 conflict between Hezbollah and Israel, which was intense, but shorter and more limited in scale. The devastation this time, he says, is "incomparable." "It wasn't like that in 2006," he recalls. "In 2024, unfortunately, it escalated to a point of no return." After he nearly lost his home to Israeli airstrikes during the latest conflict, Jawad and his family relocated to Beirut in late September. Like many other Lebanese, Jawad's life savings are locked in the country's broken banking system. He used what he had on hand to survive, waiting for the war to end. "We returned the day they called a truce, but our house was in ruins," says Jawad. Though the dwelling has now been repaired, parts of it are still patched together with plastic and cardboard. A building across the street was completely destroyed. More than three months after the Nov. 27 ceasefire that ended the fighting, large parts of southern Lebanon still lie in rubble. And while Hezbollah pledged to cover reconstruction costs, whatever rebuilding has happened has been sporadic, with the process for accessing reimbursement anything but smooth. When asked whether he has received any financial assistance for the repairs to his house and his lost furniture, Jawad says that a group of officials came to his home to check out the damage and take down the necessary information, without specifying whether they were from Hezbollah or the government. "We'll see where that goes," he adds. A recent Financial Times report states that the damage assessment committee of Hezbollah's construction arm, Jihad al-Bina, has already inspected more than 270,000 homes. Once the assessment of the damage to a home is complete, residents become eligible for compensation checks and cash payments, which are distributed through local branches of Al-Qard Al-Hassan, Hezbollah's financial arm. In December, Hezbollah's secretary-general, Naim Qassem, claimed that the group had already provided more than $50 million in aid covering 172,000 displaced families, with a total of $77 million allocated for the 233,500 households eligible for it.But with the cost of rebuilding in the housing sector alone estimated by the World Bank to be around $4.6 billion, that's a drop in the bucket. Even if no further fighting breaks out, large-scale reconstruction remains uncertain given Lebanon's economic crisis and political instability. Mukhtar Hassan Jaber, a member of the municipal council in Nabatieh who assists residents in obtaining the necessary documents to claim compensation from Hezbollah, says that the government has been of little help. "NGOs are providing machines to clear the rubble," he says. "They are working block by block to remove debris so that they can start rebuilding afterwards." Imad Salamey, an associate professor and chairperson of the Lebanese American University's Department of Political and International Studies, understands the skepticism expressed by Jaber and others with regard to the Lebanese government. But he believes that such claims are often exaggerated to justify sectarian political control over local populations. "After the 2...

We have a special Raise the Line episode today that takes a look at some behind-the-scenes work happening at Osmosis from Elsevier to expand the reach and impact of our educational content, which is now being used by learners in nearly 200 countries. Over the past year, dozens of volunteers have been hard at work translating over 100 Osmosis videos into Arabic while simultaneously researching whether these translations increase student engagement and comprehension, and improve educational equity. Our host, Dr. Amin Azzam -- who has played an oversight role in this project -- is joined by two other key members of the team: Mohammad Kabakibi, the founder of Chain of Education, an online learning platform he developed while in school at Lebanese American University; and Dania Reina, who is an e-learning creator and a pharmacist from Brazil. “In the beginning, we had one or two volunteers, but now we have more than fifty. This is huge and this only happens because we are building this for us and to leave for other healthcare professionals who will hopefully keep it going,” says Reina. Research has shown significant learning improvement among video watchers and as a bonus, the people doing the subtitles report enhanced knowledge of the subjects they work on. These positive outcomes have spurred Kabakibi to look for other opportunities to make an impact, including helping Arabic speakers learn how to do research in English. “I believe one of the legacies that this project will carry through me will be my continuous mission in reducing barriers when it comes to healthcare and education,” he shares. Check out this inspiring episode to learn about other offshoots of the project, how this work supports lifelong learning, and why AI is not up to the task.Mentioned in this episode:Chain of EducationOsmosis Video with Arabic Translation

“Socially relevant issues have been the driving force behind my work since my high school days. As a filmmaker and storyteller, I strongly believe it is our responsibility to scrutinize our society's perpetuation of stereotypes and prejudices, which stem from outdated traditions and an inadequate educational system. Rather than glorifying and romanticizing these harmful elements, as often seen in mainstream content, we should challenge them and contribute to our collective progress and growth. With this conviction in mind, I have assembled a team of passionate young professionals to embark on a captivating journey of creating and exploring ‘Ard Ba'alat,' a dystopian sci-fi fantasy series. Through this project, we aim to shed light on pressing issues and provoke thought-provoking discussions.”Samer BeyhumSamer Beyhum was raised in war-torn Lebanon during the tumultuous 1975-1990 civil war. The Middle East is drowning in anti-Iran propaganda emanating from Western, Gulf and oligarch-funded outlets that seek to turn the populations in the region against Iran and other institutions deemed to be “backed by Iran.” In Lebanon this plays out in a sectarian narrative that portrays Hezbollah as an Iranian proxy and depicts Shias as agents of an Iranian occupation of the country. This pattern has also been replicated in neighboring countries in an attempt to turn people against the regional forces that challenge U.S. imperialism. To understand the phenomenon, Rania Khalek was joined by Denijal Jegic, a professor of communication at Lebanese American University and author of a forthcoming research paper titled, “An Iranian Occupation of Lebanon: The imperialist media discourse on Western Asia.”You can listen to all episodes of Rania Khalek Dispatches anywhere you get podcasts.Spotify: https://spoti.fi/3za9DRK Apple: https://apple.co/3zeYpeW

"The truth of the matter is that there are some people who are born to be creative and they're going to be artists. And the importance of fostering that is necessary, because if we each fulfill our purpose as humans, then society is better off for it. So in other words, if I had been anything else other than what I have become, I would have only been living up to half of my potential. And so that's really important to address that. I have a lot of students whose parents don't want them to be artists because it doesn't make money, but that means they're only living up to half of their potential because they're truly meant to be artists. And so society needs to shift this understanding on what is important. "Reem Bassous received her Bachelor of Arts from The Lebanese American University in Beirut. German support for Israel appears to be unshakable no matter what the Israelis do to Palestinians. The irony of course is that much of this support for Israel is justified as necessary to make up for the German Holocaust against European Jews. It seems Palestinians are paying for Europe's crimes. To discuss this phenomenon Rania Khalek is joined by Denijal Jegic, German author and post doctoral researcher at the Lebanese American University with a PhD in American studies who wrote about this topic for TRT in a piece titled, “Palestinians must suffer so Germany can feel better about its past.”Rania and Denijal also discuss Israel's pinkwashing — the use of LGBTQ+ rights to distract from occupation and war crimes — and how western countries have adopted these practices as a form of cultural imperialism against the Middle East.

When landing in the world of Bitcoin there are many concepts down the rabbit hole to get lost in, from technology to economics there is a wealth of information available. Within the world of economics, many will discover the theory of Austrian economics for the first time.  Those who believe in Austrian Economics believe in free markets, the gold standard and minimal government intervention. So where does Bitcoin fit into this? Could it be the perfect tool to facilitate a free market Could it even become an improved and new gold standard?  To find out more, I sat down with Saifedean Ammous, author of The Bitcoin Standard and an Associate Professor in Economics at the Lebanese American University. Having recently launched his online academy it was a great time for Saifedean to teach me more about Austrian Economics and catch up on our mutual love for Liverpool FC. We discuss: Is Austrian Economics the only economic model that Bitcoin fits into? Is taxation theft? What makes a market a free market? What is money and is Bitcoin money? Will fractional reserve banking occur with Bitcoin? Will central banks adopt Bitcoin? Will improved monetary policy kill Bitcoin? Will Liverpool win the Premier League in ‘20?
