It's all been leading to this: The Key to Time season promised a big payoff, one that would assemble the most powerful artifact in the universe and put the Doctor in the middle of a cosmic conflict between the Guardians (well before they had silly birds on their heads). But with the stakes so high, why are we spending so much time pondering princesses and marshals on boring, radiation-soaked planets with nothing but corridors? It all has to be a metaphor for something, but don't ask us: we're having a hard time concentrating with two Romanas on screen, not to mention a double agent K-9. It all gets a little bonkers by the end, but as the Randomizer's origin story, The Armageddon Factor is fire… fire… fire.. fire…Give your own rating for The Armageddon Factor on Spotify! On Episode 138 of the RETROZEST podcast, Curtis celebrates the 45th Anniversary of the premiere of Battle of the Planets! This is an American adaptation of the Japanese anime series Science Ninja Team Gatchaman (1972). Of the 105 original Gatchaman episodes, 85 were used in the Battle of the Planets adaptation, produced by Sandy Frank Entertainment. Assisting Curtis in this endeavor is FRANKLIN COFOD, the editor who was responsible for overseeing the small editing staff for Sandy Frank Entertainment, as well as doing much of the editing himself. Following Battle of the Planets, he was able to expand his scope to include production, and he acted as head director on the series Voltron, Defender of the Universe and Saber Rider and the Star Sheriffs. Also joining the discussion is Author and BotP Historian JASON HOFIUS. Jason is the co-author (with George Khoury) of G-Force Animated: The Official Battle of the Planets Guidebook, as well as the creator of the exhaustive website BattleOfThePlanets.info. Jason was hired by Sandy Frank Entertainment as merchandising director and in-house specialist for the BotP property. You may buy a copy of Jason's BotP guidebook on the homepage of the website. Jason also assisted George Khoury with the writing of Age Of TV Heroes: The Live-Action Adventures Of Your Favorite Comic Book Characters. We've received a premonition of the future and we predict that you're about to listen to an hour and a bit of sci-fi and fantasy chat. Thanks to our pre-cog mates, we've also learned that we'll be talking about Steven Spielberg's remarkably prescient Philip K Dick adaptation, Minority Report. We'll be joined this episode by author, futuregazer and games industry expert Kelly Vero. Join us on a trip back 19 years to Steven Spielberg's thriller Minority Report, in which a troubled cop played by Tom Cruise goes on the run after his psychic pre-crime division predicts he'll be the next guy to commit a murder. It's a juicy conspiracy plot in the tradition of the best noir mysteries, but it also touches upon themes of free will and ethical policing, as well as building a vision of 2054 where personalised advertising and driverless cars are everywhere. Meanwhile, fabulous secret powers were revealed to us the day we held aloft our magic sword and said “By the power of Grayskull!” Yes, we've been watching Kevin Smith's Masters Of The Universe reboot, as well as Trollhunters, Wellington Paranormal, Old, American Gods and more. Plus: Space Sweepers, Memories Of The Alhambra and more – our guest this week is Kelly Vero, who shares Tanavi's love of Korean sci-fi. So if you're in need of recommendations for new sci-fi films and shows to watch, enjoy their dive into the best Korean entertainment you can find on services like Netflix. In Kelly's company, we also speculate about the next Doctor Who, watch the new Ghostbusters Afterlife trailer, consider the Battle Of The Planets reboot and loads more. There's all this plus the Exorcist and fond memories of Ulysses 31 in Robby The Robot's Waiting, the podcast that knows what you've done before you've done it. NB. Please forgive the variable audio quality in the first five minutes, we had a recording issue. Episode highlights: 0:01:00: WHAT WE'VE BEEN WATCHING! Featuring Masters Of The Universe, Old and more 0:23:05: Meet our special guest Kelly Vero – and listen in on our introduction to Korean sci-fi! 0:36:42: REWIND! We discuss the 2002 hit Minority Report. 1:05:51: THE NEWS! In which we discuss Doctor Who, Ghostbusters, Superman, Battle Of The Planets, The Exorcist and loads more. This cut is the deepest and I'm not talking PP Arnold. Guest spot Reggie Parker, a clear expert of the old school animation, brought us Battle of the Planets. This redubbing of the anime Science Ninja Team Gatchaman was a milestone for the art form in America as one of the first to go mainstream. It had Kaiju, it had mechs, it had Power Ranger type transformations, it had a robot running the show, but this show did it all first. Listen in and learn how it all went down. #comicscartooonsandcraftbeer #comicscartooonsandcraftbeerthepodcast #comics #cartoons #craftbeer #craft #beer #podcast #pod #cccthep #cccb #ashareduniverse #battleoftheplanets #scienceninjateamgatchaman #sandyfrank #transmute #gforce #mark #princess #tiny #jason #keyop #7zark7 #StayTooned --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/comics-cartoons-craftbeer/support
