We're going more obscure with this minilog as we explore the 2013 cult classic anime Gatchaman Crowds and its 2015 sequel season Gatchaman Crowds Insight. We look at this history of the Gatchaman franchise and Tatsunoko Productions in general before we start discussing this strange, political, and highly prescient twist on the Superhero story, where protagonist Hajime Ichinose sets the rules and deals with internet trolls awakening individual will and friendly orange aliens granting sentience to the collective subconscious. And most importantly of all, we explore what it means to be a hero in a complex society based around the liberal democratic ideal of building consensus, as well as the dangers of populism and going with the flow. Yeah, it's THAT kind of series. Watch it!

Mad Cave Studios is bringing back Gatchaman in comic book form and we have a very special double episode to let you know all about it. Science Ninja Team Gatchaman was a Japanese animated series that debuted in 1972. In the States, if you were around for the late 70s/early 80s, the episodes were edited and dubbed for an American audience and called Battle of the Planets. The series has taken on many different forms and incarnations over the years, but Mad Cave has brought on artist Chris Batista and writer Cullen Bunn along with colorist Carlos Lopez and letterer Buddy Beaudoin to once again breathe life into this epic franchise for old and new fans alike. I was able to chat with Chris and Cullen all about Gatchaman, bue to a scheduling error that may or may not have been my fault, who's to say, I had to record these episodes separately. Lucky you though, dear listener, because you get 2 episodes for the price of 1! Check out these 2 really fun interviews and head to your LCS to pick up your copy of Gatchaman #1 in stores June 26th. "Hello, my name is Russell McGee, I am the writer, director, and Starrynight Productions Executive Producer of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. You are about to listen to Episode 1 – The Company of Friends. In this episode, the adventures of young Dorothy Gale and her dog, Toto, begin when their Kansas home is swept away by a cyclone and they find themselves in the strange land of Oz. Here she meets the good witch, Locasta Tattypoo, and the Munchkins. She is then joined by the Scarecrow, Tin Woodman, and Cowardly Lion on an unforgettable journey to the Emerald City, where lives the all-powerful Wizard of Oz. The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (commonly known as The Wizard of Oz”), is the first book in the famous Oz fourteen book series by author L. Frank Baum. It was originally illustrated by W. W. Denslow, and published at the turn of the 20th century in the year 1900. It is also widely considered to be one of the very first official American fairytales or fables. WFIU Public Radio partnered with Starrynight Productions and Soundbooth Theater on a new four-part audio adaptation of L. Frank Baum's book The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. Writer/director Russell McGee (of Big Finish Productions Doctor Who audio plays) and producer/actor Michael Brainard (of All My Children) collaborated with Soundbooth's Jeff Hays to produce this full-cast audio play series. The Wonderful Wizard of Oz features the talents of voice actors P.J. Ochlan (known for Young Sheldon and Little Man Tate), Franc Ross (known for Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul, and Deadwood), Greta Lind (known for Rudy and All My Children), Bert Rotundo (known for Silicon Valley and Marvel's Agent Carter), Leraldo Anzaldua (known for Gatchaman and Highschool of the Dead), and a cast of many others. The entire series first aired on WFIU, Bloomington, in February and March of 2023. Since that time, episode one has been available to listen for free on the Starrynight Productions website. The entire series is being distributed by Soundbooth Theater on their digital distribution platform. The Wonderful Wizard of Oz was made possible with support from Indiana Public Broadcasting Stations. On Episode 138 of the RETROZEST podcast, Curtis celebrates the 45th Anniversary of the premiere of Battle of the Planets! This is an American adaptation of the Japanese anime series Science Ninja Team Gatchaman (1972). Of the 105 original Gatchaman episodes, 85 were used in the Battle of the Planets adaptation, produced by Sandy Frank Entertainment. Assisting Curtis in this endeavor is FRANKLIN COFOD, the editor who was responsible for overseeing the small editing staff for Sandy Frank Entertainment, as well as doing much of the editing himself. Following Battle of the Planets, he was able to expand his scope to include production, and he acted as head director on the series Voltron, Defender of the Universe and Saber Rider and the Star Sheriffs. Battle of the Planets! A cartoon that was unleashed on America after the success of Star Wars. It ushered in a new wave of the popular style of animation. This week, we look back on why it hit the right notes. Plus, Jay tests Shua's knowledge in "Anime or Sushi", on Enjoy Stuff!   Join us on a trip back to an adaptation of a popular Japanese cartoon that got our imagination flowing! This is Battle of the Planets!   News Ted Lasso will return on March 15 Grab your bottle of Peeps-flavored Pepsi before Easter arrives! Bill Watterson will release a new graphic novel, years after retiring from Calvin and Hobbes The Enjoy Stuff-recommend show, Poker Face has been renewed for season 2   Check out our TeePublic store for some enjoyable swag and all the latest fashion trends What we're Enjoying Shua drank the Kool-Aid (or would it be ‘eats the fungus') and watched the HBO Max hit series “The Last of Us”. This not-quite-a-zombie series includes great action, suspense, and character development. It stars Mandalorian's Pedro Pascal and Game of Thrones' Bella Ramsey. If you enjoy dystopian post-apocalyptic shows, you're gonna love this! Jay started replaying the relatively recent and well-received video game, Jedi: Fallen Order. It has a great story, terrific graphics. And there have been some references in recent episodes of The Bad Batch on Disney+. Check them both out!   Sci-Fi Saturdays/MCU Location Scout Brad Bird's iconic classic The Iron Giant is the film on the docket this week on Sci-Fi Saturdays. Meaningful themes, great performances, and cool, stylized art design. Check it out on Sci-Fi Saturdays on Retrozap.com. Plus, stay tuned for the classic Star Trek homage Galaxy Quest, coming this Saturday.    Enjoy Cartoons! With the success of Star Wars in 1977, entertainment creators were looking to cash in on the newest sci-fi craze. One company scored big when they bought the rights to a Japanese animated series called Gatchaman.    Though, it wasn't quite the feel they were going for. So as it was adapted to American TV, some big changes created almost a different show altogether. Some of the overall story was changed with some violence and style of dialogue was made more kid-friendly.    Because some was just cut altogether, certain segments with a very familiar looking robot, named 7-Zark-7, was added as a narrator to tie things together, especially after the drastic changes.     It seemed to all work though, because it became very popular, and even helped future Anime reach the mainstream, such as Voltron and MASK. It's success also led to a live-action Japanese movie called Gatchaman in 2013.   With all this great Anime fun on the show, Jay decided to quiz Shua with his knowledge by playing the game “Anime or Sushi?” How will Shua do? Does he know his mouth food from his eye candy? Test your knowledge and see how you do!   Are you a fan of Battle of the Planets? Do you know your sushi? Did you read all of these shownotes? First person that emails me with the subject line, “Always Five! Acting as one!” will get a special mention on the show.  Let us know. The functions of a ninja included reconnaissance, espionage, infiltration, deception, ambush, bodyguarding and their fighting skills in martial arts, including ninjutsu.[1] Their covert methods of waging irregular warfare were deemed dishonorable and beneath the honor of the samurai.[2] Though shinobi proper, as specially trained spies and mercenaries, appeared in the 15th century during the Sengoku period,[3] antecedents may have existed as early as the 12th century.[4][5] Ninja appear in many forms of Japanese and Western popular media, including books (Kōga Ninpōchō), movies (Enter the Ninja, Revenge of the Ninja, Ninja Assassin), television (Akakage, The Master, Ninja Warrior), video games (Shinobi, Ninja Gaiden, Tenchu, Sekiro, Ghost of Tsushima), anime (Naruto, Ninja Scroll, Gatchaman), manga (Basilisk, Ninja Hattori-kun, Azumi), Western animation (Ninjago: Masters of Spinjitzu) and American comic books (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles). From ancient Japan to the modern world media, popular depictions range from the realistic to the fantastically exaggerated, both fundamentally and aesthetically. ________________________________________________________________________ Grab a beer, a slice of pizza and come hang out with us.
