Our latest episode features independent toy designer and comic book creator Peter Goral, whose childhood immersion in Masters of the Universe, G.I. Joe, and Star Wars launched him to the forefront of the bootleg art toy movement. Peter shares his journey from an avid toy collector and gifted artist to creating paintings to kitbashing existing toys to make new creations, before learning to make molds and cast his own original figures. We explore how his work reimagines classic characters into new pieces that resonate with collectors worldwide, including his breakthrough creation Phantom Starkiller, a celebrated Super 7 toy and bootleg sensation that became so popular it spawned its own comic book series. Mark shares his journey from graduating the Joe Kubert School of Cartoon and Graphic Art in 1985 to starting his career doing designs for iconic toy lines like G.I. Joe  at Hasbro before transitioning to comic book inking in 1988. We dive into his extensive work across major publishers including Marvel, DC, Image, CrossGen, and others, inking legendary titles like X-Men, Spider-Man, Fantastic Four, Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight, Eclipso, Violator and more, with particular focus on his acclaimed work on Shade, the Changing Man, which earned him an Eisner nomination for Best Inker in 1993. He shares his origin story of discovering comics as a kid growing up in Brooklyn and Staten Island, working at comic retailer Jim Hanley's store during high school, and his transition from wanting to study animation at the School of Visual Arts to focusing on comics at NYU. We jump into his cult classics Milk and Cheese and Dork (from Slave Labor Graphics), discussing the independent comics scene in the late '80s and early '90s and how he developed his unique brand of anarchic humor that both celebrates and satirizes fandom. Evan opens up about his most beloved and infamous creation, The Eltingville Club, which earned him multiple Eisner Awards for its brutal takedown of toxic fan culture. John Rose has been breathing new life into the iconic comic strip Barney Google and Snuffy Smith for over two decades. After joining as an inking assistant to Fred Lasswell in 1998, he took over the strip following Lasswell's passing in 2001. John has published several collections, including The Bodacious Best of Snuffy Smith and Snuffy Smith in His Sunday Best. He also illustrated the children's book The Dogwood Tales and regularly appears at cartooning events, offering live chalk talks where he demonstrates his craft.
