On today's episode we start our journey through Diablo: The Black Road by Mel Odom. Not the painter Mel Odom, but the author for hire! This book is pretty highly rated from what we've seen on various "reading apps" but so far we remain unconvinced. But there's plenty of Kevin Klein in Pirates of Penzance References we make so hopefully that makes up for it? Across chapter 7 of Sign of the Unicorn, we begin to unpack the critical timelines surrounding the period when Amber's troubles begin, as Corwin steps back to evaluate what he knows and doesn't know. Why did Brand disappear? What's the relationship to Oberon's disappearance? How far back did the plotting for the throne begin? What's the relationship between the damaging of the Pattern, the Black Road, and Corwin's curse? Zelazny spun a complex plot, and we'll do our best to get our heads around it.
In this episode, we cover chapters 7 and 8 of The Guns of Avalon -- the flight of Corwin and Ganelon from Avalon, the encounter with the Black Road, Benedict's chase, and finally Corwin's first return to his house in New York since his car accident. We'll dive into the timeline, the references to real people and places from Shadow Earth.

I'm working on the second decade of my friendship with Dre Black, road warrior supreme. I met her back in the early part of the millennium out on the road. At the time she was tour managing, driving and doing pretty much whatever needed to be done to keep a band on the road. Over the years, She's played guitar in a multitude of bands including Howl, Storm of Light and more recently Race Traitor. It was great to catch up with Dre as the world begins to re awaken and if all goes well, we'll both be out on the road again. Intro: “Eighteen is Over the Hill” – The West Coast Pop Art Experiment Outro: “A B Side” – Manfred Mann

Gary Lundgren is the writer and director of such films as Calvin Marshall, Redwood Highway and Black Road. I selected his most recent film "Phoenix, Oregon" because of the local connection to my hometown of Eugene, Oregon. I expected very little from it but gave it my promised 15 minutes assessment. I wasn't expecting to make past five minutes, truth be told, but Gary's film immerses you into his story with its engaging characters and subdued plot. Who cannot cheer for Bobby and Carlos' attempt to revitalize a foreclosed bowling alley? The subject matter reminded me of Gary Putnam's book, "Bowling Alone: the collapse and revival of American community." The book's theorizes that Americans have increasingly spent less time together due to a variety of factors in our society and culture. With 2020 being the summer of Covid-19, "Phoenix, Oregon" restokes the flame of our folk kinship that hopefully many Americans long to rekindle. The film has the feel of the independent cinema movement of the 90's when young auteurs Spike Lee, Kevin Smith, Jim Jarmusch and Quentin Tarantino brought their visions to the screen. The New York Times calls it "an ode to small-town joys" and that it "feels poignant during our current pandemic." In this episode, Gary discusses the creative process that went into creating "Phoenix, Oregon", what inspires him as a filmmaker and his advice to blossoming artists.

PHOENIX OREGON is the story of two friends, a graphic novelist and a chef, seizing an unlikely opportunity to reinvent their lives, quit their jobs to restore an old bowling alley and serve the “world's greatest pizza.” Phoenix, Oregon stars James Le Gros (Drugstore Cowboy, Living in Oblivion), Lisa Edelstein (Girlfriends' Guide to Divorce, House), Jesse Borrego (Fame, Blood In Blood Out), Reynaldo Gallegos (Triple Frontier, American Sniper), Diedrich Bader (Napoleon Dynamite, Office Space, Veep), and Kevin Corrigan (The Departed, Pineapple Express, True Romance). PHOENIX OREGON takes a comedic look at the existential crisis many face when trying to find meaning and relevancy at midlife. Despite controlling bosses, dead-end jobs, and broken relationships, the two leads must awaken hibernating courage and resilience in order to take new risks and keep dreams alive. Director and writer Gary Lundgren (Calvin Marshall, Redwood Highway, Black Road) stops by to talk his own midlife angst and inspiration for this disarming gem of a film, working with a stellar cast and his love for the Pacific Northwest. Phoenix, Oregon is a touching new film comedy of midlife reinvention and the redeeming power of friendship along with pizza, bowling, and comic book art. Defying their shared murky midlife haze, Bobby, a bartender and aspiring graphic novelist played by James Le Gros (Drugstore Cowboy, Living In Oblivion and co-star of the new Amazon Prime Al Pacino series Hunters) and his best friend, chef Carlos played by Jesse Borrego (Fame, Blood In Blood Out, Fear The Walking Dead) leave their dead-end jobs and seize an unlikely opportunity to reinvent their lives by restoring an old bowling alley and serving the “world's greatest pizza." Written and Directed by Gary Lundgren (Calvin Marshall, Redwood Highway, Black Road) and Produced by Anne Lundgren and Luis Rodriguez, the film is set to open in select cities in the US March 20. Tune into Blog Talk Radio tomorrow, Friday, Feb 28 at 1:30 pm ET as host Burke Allen sits down with the Gary Lundgren, AnnieLundgren and Luis Rodriguez to learn what inspred them to make the movie! In der neusten Ausgabe von POW! - Ein ComicPodcast diskutieren Mattes, Andreas und Emu abermals mehr als ausschweifend. The hilarious and awesome Rebecca Mozzo joins the guys this week to try to decipher a viewing of Black Road. If the future is going to be this confusing, might as well skip it. Also viel Spaß! Einer der Comics dieser Folge hat euch so begeistert, dass ihr ihn haben wollt? Nutzt doch diesen Ref-Link dafür. Wir bekommen ein paar Cent von eurem Einkaufspreis und ihr zahlt nicht einen Cent mehr dafür. Ist doch ein feiner Deal oder? It's been six months since he last did so, but Derek is back at his local shop, Collected Comics and Games, for another on-location episode. As usual, he talks with several of the shop customers and employees about the kinds of comics that they've been reading. And since it's the first month of the year, everyone used the opportunity to discuss the titles that stood out for them in 2015 as well as the comics that they're looking forward to in the coming months. For this recording Derek is joined by on-location episode regulars, Craig, Matt, and Chris, as well as store associate Stephanie and the shop's new manager, Sabrina. (Sabrina has been at Collected in Plano for a long time, but she's just recently become its manager.) So after getting reacquainted with the preliminaries, everyone jumps into a recap of the most notable comics from last year. It's no surprise that, for many, Marvel's Secret Wars and its many ancillary tales received the lion's share of commentary (along with the publisher's seemingly endless, and irritating, instances of renumbering and revoluming). But there were other outstanding 2015 titles for the crew, including Toil and Trouble, Invader Zim, Plutona, the new Archie, BKV's We Stand on Guard and Paper Girls, and the webcomic Ava's Demon. Derek then turns the discussion into a more forward-looking one, asking everyone what comics and events they are anticipating in the coming year. Many said that the new iteration of Marvel's Civil War is something that they're eagerly awaiting, but folks also mentioned Brian Wood's upcoming Black Road, Daniel Clowes's Patience, more Jem and the Holograms, Chapter House's Spirit Leaves, Beauties (whose first issue came out at the tail end of last year), and the continuation of Vertigo's new line of titles. TV and movie properties, especially the second season of Netflix's Daredevil and the new Lucifer series, also get a lot of love during the discussion. Overall, the guys at the shop covered a lot of ground, and everyone is looking forward to more of these monthly on-location episodes throughout the year!
Interview with Producer ANNE LUNDGREN – Film Black Road, Calvin Marshall, and Redwood Highway Film BLACK ROAD is written and directed by Gary Lundgren and produced by Anne Lundgren. Together they own Joma Films in Ashland, Oregon. Working with a team of Oregonians, we have made two features in the Rogue Valley, CALVIN MARSHALL (2009) and REDWOOD HIGHWAY (2014). This neo-noir thriller is about an ex-military drifter who’s hired by a mysterious woman to protect her from a homicidal ex. With an A.I. implant in his head, DYLAN has a virtual companion and moral compass as his situation spirals out of control. Like classic film noir, BLACK ROAD reflects the insecurities of our time; the flailing American job market, economic inequality, government intrusion on civil liberties and our growing love affair with technology. At the heart of this movie is a simple story of desire and disillusionment. Our hero craves a stable life, satisfying work and meaningful relationships…but he’s in trouble – caught between $18M in gold, a femme fatal and the maniac who wants her dead. PREVIOUS FILMS Redwood Highway (2014) Downright charming. The fiercely independent Marie is someone we root for, worry about and wring our hands over in equal measure. – LOS ANGELES TIMES It’s a low-key charmer with a large-souled performance at the center. One of the best roles of [Shirley Knight’s] career. – THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER Calvin Marshall (2009) The best baseball movies are there when we need them, and now we have another classic. -THE AUSTINIST Steve Zahn gives a career-best performance in this low-key gem. -THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER Wow & Flutter (short film) Seventeen heartbreakingly exhilarating minutes. – Hampton Style Magazine A fabulous movie about how life can be so cruel, but how all that bile can disappear with just one kiss. – ***** FILM THREAT Thank You for checking out Hollywood Breakthrough Show!
