Halloween season is taking over the theme park industry — and apparently everybody wants some of Universal's IP money. On Episode 275 of the Vacationeers Theme Parks & More Podcast, Tom and Jon look at the growing battle over licensed Halloween properties as Six Flags, United Parks and Universal roll out some big-name horror franchises.Six Flags is bringing Jason Voorhees to select parks with JASON: Blood Reign, while Cedar Point and Kings Dominion are opening a portal to Blizzard's Diablo franchise.United Parks is making one of its biggest moves yet into licensed Halloween IP, bringing I Know What You Did Last Summer to SeaWorld parks and Anaconda to Busch Gardens Tampa and Williamsburg. We go through the latest Howl-O-Scream houses and scare zones, along with some interesting comments from United Parks management about why IP could become increasingly important to the event.Over at Universal, Ozzy Osbourne: Prince of Darkness is coming to Halloween Horror Nights — and now Ozzy is getting his own themed HHN bar as well. We also discuss the latest HHN updates, Universal Orlando's 2026 holiday plans and Universal Nights tickets going on sale. Then we compare the latest quarterly results from Six Flags, United Parks and Disney Experiences. Disney had the strongest quarter of the three, while United Parks continues to see guests spend more money inside its parks even as attendance struggles.Disney is also using an internal J.A.R.V.I.S. AI system with Imagineers, and we look at what has already been revealed at D23 ahead of the big Horizons: Disney Experiences Showcase. Before the news, it's time for The Queue!Tom talks about a recent SeaWorld Orlando and Aquatica visit where he and Elena:Picked up their free Pass Member basting brushes.Hit Waterway Grill Bar's happy hour for a $5 beer and $9 cocktail.Tried the Jalapeño Cheese Warm Pretzel and Bougee Bratwurst at Red, White & BBQ — spending just 20 cents on each after using SeaWorld Bucks.Discovered Aquatica's Happy Hour promotion has ended.Ordered “single” scoops of ice cream that somehow turned into three scoops each…and then became free when the register went down.Used Beach Bucks and Pass Member discounts to grab kids meals and beers at Waterstone Grill for final out-of-pocket totals of just $2.67 and $2.71.Tom also talks about getting to Busch Gardens Tampa for Kumba's final weekend, arriving for 8 a.m. early entry and getting three final rides on the legendary coaster. And naturally, since every theme park company is licensing an IP for Halloween now, Tom has an announcement of his own:The IP-licensed Pitch Perfect condo Halloween event is apparently coming soon.
Send us Fan MailScott and Michelle continue their journey through Halloween Horror Nights history with a deep dive into Halloween Horror Nights 27, the 2017 event that delivered an incredible mixture of blockbuster horror properties, original concepts, and one of the strangest event mascots in HHN history.HHN 27 ran from September 15 through November 4, 2017, featuring nine haunted houses, five official scare zones, and two live shows. At the center of the event was Bone, the mysterious skeletal character associated with Festival of the Deadliest, a scare zone celebrating some of the deadliest creatures and killers imaginable. Bone became one of those HHN characters that fans couldn't help but remember. But the houses were where 2017 really made its mark. The guys break down the arrival of Stranger Things, which transported guests into Hawkins and the Upside Down, as well as The Shining, bringing the terrifying Overlook Hotel and Jack Torrance to life. They also revisit Ash vs Evil Dead, the return of American Horror Story with Asylum, Coven, and Roanoke, The Horrors of Blumhouse, and another chapter of The Walking Dead. The 2017 American Horror Story house specifically combined three seasons of the series into one experience. The original houses get plenty of attention as well, including Scarecrow: The Reaping, Dead Waters, and The Hive, while the streets offered memorable experiences such as Trick 'r Treat, The Purge, Invasion!, Chainsaw Clown Horde, and Festival of the Deadliest. The episode also looks at the impact of Hurricane Irma, which hit Florida just before the event and affected the preparation and opening presentation of several scare zones. Scott and Michelle break down the houses, zones, shows, characters, atmosphere, and overall legacy of HHN 27, while asking whether 2017 deserves to be remembered as one of the more underrated years of the 2010s.It's time to open the Time Capsule and head back to 2017.Make your rooms, cars and life smell like your favorite Theme Park and save 15% by using code THNETWORK and clicking here:https://magiccandlecompany.com?sca_ref=8499280.CVzaCEZ7KoGhost Executioners Merchandise!https://www.teepublic.com/user/thehorrificnetwork?utm_source=designer&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=horrificnetworkFollow All Things Horrific Network Herehttps://linktr.ee/thehorrificnetworkGet Your Sinister Creature Con Tickets Herehttps://www.sinistercreaturecon.com/thecon
Send us Fan MailScott and Michelle continue their journey through Halloween Horror Nights history with a deep dive into Halloween Horror Nights 26, the 2016 event that put Chance in the driver's seat. After years of being associated with Jack the Clown, Chance stepped forward as the event's icon, with her twisted imagination becoming the centerpiece of Lunatics Playground 3D: You Won't Stand a Chance. The house blurred the line between Chance's fantasies and reality as guests entered her disturbing playground of carnage. But Chance wasn't the only attraction.HHN 26 delivered an impressive lineup of horror properties, including The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, The Exorcist, Halloween: Hell Comes to Haddonfield, Krampus, The Walking Dead, and the highly anticipated American Horror Story house. The American Horror Story house was particularly ambitious, combining three seasons of the FX series — Murder House, Freak Show, and Hotel — into a single experience, making it one of the event's most talked-about IPs that yearMake your rooms, cars and life smell like your favorite Theme Park and save 15% by using code THNETWORK and clicking here:https://magiccandlecompany.com?sca_ref=8499280.CVzaCEZ7KoGhost Executioners Merchandise!https://www.teepublic.com/user/thehorrificnetwork?utm_source=designer&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=horrificnetworkFollow All Things Horrific Network Herehttps://linktr.ee/thehorrificnetworkGet Your Sinister Creature Con Tickets Herehttps://www.sinistercreaturecon.com/thecon

Send us Fan MailScott and Michelle continue their chronological journey through Halloween Horror Nights history with a deep dive into Halloween Horror Nights 24, a year that successfully blended major horror franchises with memorable original concepts while bringing back a fan-favorite element: traditional scare zones throughout the park. This episode revisits every haunted house from the 2014 event, including Halloween, which brought Michael Myers to Halloween Horror Nights for the very first time, AVP: Alien vs. Predator, The Walking Dead: End of the Line, From Dusk Till Dawn, Dracula Untold: Reign of Blood, and original creations like Dollhouse of the Damned, Giggles & Gore Inc., and Roanoke: Cannibal Colony. The conversation also explores one of the event's biggest changes: the return of multiple themed scare zones after several years without them. Scott and Michelle revisit The Purge: Anarchy, MASKerade: Unstitched, Bayou of Blood, and Face Off: In the Flesh, discussing how their return brought fresh energy back to the streets of Universal Studios Florida. They also look back at Bill & Ted's Excellent Halloween Adventure and The Rocky Horror Picture Show: A Tribute, two entertainment staples that helped define this era of HHN. Was HHN 24 one of the most underrated events of the 2010s? With Ozzy becoming official we have the final house announcement for HHN 35 which means the event's full house lineup has finally been revealed! We'll dive into the Ozzy Osbourne house, discuss how we think his legendary career and music will translate into a haunted house experience, and share what we're most excited for. With every house now on the board, speculation can finally take a backseat as hype season kicks into overdrive. HHN 35 is almost here, and we can't wait to break down everything that's headed our way!
Send us Fan MailScott and Michelle continue their year-by-year exploration of Halloween Horror Nights with a deep dive into Halloween Horror Nights 23, an event that fully embraced Hollywood horror franchises while still delivering memorable original concepts. This episode revisits every haunted house from the 2013 event, including fan favorites like An American Werewolf in London, Resident Evil: Escape from Raccoon City, The Cabin in the Woods, Evil Dead, After Life: Death's Vengeance, Havoc: Derailed, Psychoscareapy: Unleashed, and La Llorona: Cazadora de Niños. Scott and Michelle discuss which houses still hold up today and which helped define the modern HHN experience. The conversation also explores one of the event's biggest creative decisions: transforming nearly the entire park into The Walking Dead: The Undead Streets, making AMC's hit zombie series the dominant theme throughout the scare zones. They also revisit the return of Bill & Ted's Excellent Halloween Adventure, The Rocky Horror Picture Show: A Tribute, and the continued evolution of the event's live entertainment. Hershey has a name for the economy we've been describing all year: Treatonomics, "a consumer trend in which people prioritize joyful, memorable experiences and generosity over simply chasing the lowest price." Guests are still spending on Halloween, and they're looking for memorable experiences to connect with, even if it costs a little more. Case in point: eight dates of Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party, a family trick-or-treat party that is practically the definition of Treatonomics, sold out before the event even opened.Meanwhile, all the major theme parks now have at least one IP-based haunt, with Sony landing at all five Howl-O-Scream parks, Jason coming to three Six Flags parks, and Ozzy completing the HHN 35 lineup. But when every major event is licensed, there's a market in the zag: Netherworld marked its 30th season by going deeper into its own mythology, and original is about to become the differentiator. In this issue:- Hershey's State of the Season Report: Welcome to Treatonomics- Ozzy Osbourne: Prince of Darkness Completes the HHN 35 Lineup- Sony Licenses Land at All Five Howl-O-Scream Parks- Jason: Blood Reign Coming to Three Six Flags Parks- Jackson Wang Is Building a Haunted House at Ocean Park- Netherworld Announces Its 30th Season of Screams- Spirit Halloween Moved Into 85 Former Party City Stores- Retail Roundup: Michael Myers, Beistle, Johanna Parker, Grandin Road, Buc-ee's, Pottery Barn, Funko, Disney Store, and Hobby Lobby's Missing Halloweenhttps://mailchi.mp/hauntedattractionnetwork.com/treatonomics-guests-want-memorable-not-cheap
Send us Fan MailScott and Michelle continue their chronological journey through Halloween Horror Nights history with a deep dive into Halloween Horror Nights 22, one of the most experimental and memorable events of the modern era.Rather than centering the event around a single icon, HHN 22 introduced The Legions of Horror, turning nearly the entire park into one massive roaming scare zone filled with vampires, warriors, zombies, prisoners, beasts, and the sinister Iniquitus. It marked the first time since 2007 that Universal focused on one large park-wide scare zone instead of several individual scare zones. The episode also revisits one of the strongest licensed lineups of the early 2010s, including The Walking Dead: Dead Inside, Welcome to Silent Hill—the first video game property ever featured at Halloween Horror Nights—Alice Cooper: Welcome to My Nightmare, and the wildly inventive Penn & Teller: New(kd) Vegas. Scott and Michelle also discuss standout original houses like Dead End, Gothic, and Universal's House of Horrors, which celebrated Universal Pictures' century-long horror legacy. Beyond the houses, they revisit the return of Bill & Ted's Excellent Halloween Adventure, the debut of 20 Penny Circus: Fully Exposed, and the first Halloween Horror Nights Cinematic Spectacular, while discussing how HHN 22 balanced blockbuster IPs with memorable original concepts. Was HHN 22 an underrated classic? Halloween Horror Nights is bringing Fortnitemares to both its US events this fall, a scare zone modeled on the game's annual in-game Halloween event, complete with the Battle Bus and a few HHN-exclusive additions. Fortnite is the most-played console game in the United States, with more than 650 million lifetime registered players, a brand larger than the event hosting it. The creative objection is the weakest one, since Fortnitemares is already a Halloween event. The harder questions are operational: this targets the same young demographic behind teen takeovers, in a scare zone with no line to control. Success comes down to balancing three brands at once, enough Fortnite, enough Halloween, and enough Universal.Meanwhile, Universal's theme parks grew revenue 2.7% in the second quarter while segment EBITDA fell 5.1%, the first decline since Epic Universe opened. Orlando attendance softened in June and stayed pressured into July, with management pointing to fuel prices and consumer sentiment. Guests who come are spending, but fewer are coming, and Epic itself is still delivering. The response is a Halloween bet: a 48-night Horror Nights run starting August 28, Universal Nights in October, and Epic passholder discounts up to 40%. We've argued summer is becoming the industry's new shoulder season, and this quarter shows why. Summer sells the core product alone, while fall sells the same core plus the seasonal overlay on one ticket. Tokyo Disney raising its top price for October and Six Flags flash-selling $35 summer tickets point the same direction.Listen to weekly BONUS episodes on our Patreon.
