Zach sits down with Kate and Cole Kelly, married co-directors of Camp Equahic in northeastern Pennsylvania and the authors behind the relationship practice they built almost by accident: Three Happys and an Appreciation. What started as a long-distance dating ritual, Kate asking Cole to name three things that made him happy each day just so she could get to know him, became the through line of a 25-year marriage, a shared business, three sons, and a camp community that now serves 450 kids per session from 15 states and 14 countries. The conversation moves across a lot of terrain. Cole grew up in Athens, Georgia, went to Dartmouth, coached golf at the University of Virginia, and came to camp life through Kate, who had already found her footing running a boarding school and never wanted to be in a classroom. Together they took over a camp that was quietly dying after a family ownership dispute, grew it back from the ground up, and built their philosophy around three values they believe transcend religion, background, and age: gratitude, attitude, and courage. Along the way they layered in everything from Viktor Frankl and Tony Robbins to Alison Armstrong's research on how men and women communicate differently, and applied all of it to the work of staying close while also running a business that puts 675 souls in their care every summer. The emotional center of this episode is surprisingly practical. Kate and Cole are not people who talk about their marriage in abstractions. They talk about the appreciation Cole had to ask for because Kate was falling asleep before he got it. They talk about what it cost Kate for Cole to travel most of the year meeting families in person, and why they kept doing it anyway. They built a coming-of-age ritual for their three boys because there was no secular equivalent to a bar mitzvah and they thought someone should. Their oldest son Cole Jr. is getting married this summer at camp, with half the wedding party made up of his childhood bunkmates. This episode is a portrait of two people who decided very early that marriage is a practice, not a feeling, and then built the systems to prove it.Key TakeawaysGratitude is a skill, not a mood. Building a daily habit of noticing what is good, no matter how small, physically changes how you see your partner and your life. The appreciation piece is the one that often gets resisted most and matters most. Telling your partner specifically what you noticed and valued about them that day is different from a general "I love you," and it hits differently too.Scanning for the good in your partner is something you have to train yourself to do. It does not happen naturally for most people. The three happys practice creates the conditions for it.Men and women often process differently, and understanding that is an attitude adjustment in itself. Cole stopped resisting Kate's multi-threaded thinking when he understood it was not chaos; it was wiring.Courage in marriage looks less like big dramatic moments and more like saying the hard thing, asking for help, or admitting you do not have it today.Kids grow by being allowed to fail. Snowplowing the obstacles out of their path also removes the muscle they need to handle real life.Consistency beats perfection. The three happys practice works not because every night is meaningful but because doing it every night makes the meaningful nights possible.A system is not a substitute for connection. It is the container that makes connection repeatable.Guest InfoKate Kelly is the co-director and operational backbone of Camp Weequahic, one of the top co-ed overnight camps in the country. A former boarding school educator, Kate has spent over two decades building systems, leading staff, and quietly running the kind of operation that camp families trust with their kids for up to six weeks at a time. She and Cole are co-authors of the book Three Happys and an Appreciation, available in both a family edition and a couples edition on Amazon.Cole Kelly is the co-director of Camp Weequahic and the front-facing voice of the Kelly family's camp community. A Dartmouth graduate with a background in sports psychology and golf coaching, Cole spends much of the year traveling the country to meet prospective families in person, a practice he refuses to give up despite the flight miles it costs him. He is a student of Tony Robbins, Viktor Frankl, and Alison Armstrong, and has spent years thinking intentionally about how to raise good men, including building a secular coming-of-age program for his three sons and a cohort of their fathers.Website: https://weequahic.com Podcast and relationship resources: https://campfireconversation.comSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Join Julie Harwich as she considers how having an “attitude of gratitude” effectively battles disappointment, envy, depression, and negative thinking. This is a powerful and important teaching!

All Home Care Matters and our host, Lance A. Slatton were honored to welcome Irene Walker the Author of "Forgiving the Man Who Forgot: Grateful Gratitude Attitude" as guest to the show. About Irene Walker: Irene Walker is a strong and resilient woman who has faced significant personal challenges. Losing her husband to early-onset dementia is an incredibly difficult experience, and yet, her ability to maintain success in her career and continue to raise her children while managing life's complexities speaks to her inner strength. Irene strongly believes in practicing gratitude daily. Her background in business administration and financial risk has helped her navigate the uncertainties that come with managing both her professional life and the demands of her personal circumstances. Despite her professional achievements, it's clear that her personal journey has been deeply transformative. About "Forgiving the Man Who Forgot: Grateful Gratitude Attitude": We left the doctor's office and my head started spinning. I couldn't remember where I had parked the car. Quite miraculously, Robert managed to navigate us to the correct floor of the parking garage. I felt that all hope had been sucked out of me. I had been struggling to cope since our last appointment with the family doctor, but receiving this final blow was brutal. I put my left hand on the side of the car, leaned over, and threw up. It was just bile. I had to push something out of me--denial, anger, angst--I didn't know. I only knew that I needed it out. I wiped my mouth, my snotty nose and my tear-stained face with jittery hands and then leaned heavily against the back of the car. I took a long, shaky breath in and out in an attempt to pull myself together. So began the journey with her husband who is diagnosed with early onset Dementia at the age of 51. Forgiving The Man Who Forgot carries the reader along one woman's journey of love, gratitude, honesty, disappointment and courage, detailing her life before, during and after her husband's diagnosis of early onset dementia. Reading this memoir, the reader feels as though the author is sitting across from them and sharing the ups and downs of her life, over a glass of wine or cup of coffee.

In our latest podcast episode, we delve into this fascinating realm, exploring how gratitude serves as the key to unlocking its boundless treasures. Picture gratitude as the energetic frequency that tunes you into the quantum field, allowing you to tap into the abundance that surrounds you. Every moment of appreciation becomes a beacon, guiding you closer to your deepest desires. It's a conscious choice—a decision to focus your energy on the goodness that already exists in your life. From the smallest joys to the grandest blessings, gratitude illuminates the path to manifestation. But here's the twist: manifestation isn't just about wishful thinking or positive affirmations. It's about aligning yourself with the frequencies of abundance and joy, and gratitude is the bridge that connects you to these higher realms of consciousness. What if we embraced the practice of gratitude with open hearts and open minds? What if we allowed ourselves to sow seeds of kindness, cultivate joy, and watch as our lives blossomed into a symphony of love and abundance? Are you in? In the third sermon of the series, Pastor Terry Mahan emphasizes the transformative power of gratitude with "Gratitude Attitude" in shaping a renewed mind, building on the foundational truths of Romans 12:1-2. The sermon contrasts the choice between conforming to worldly patterns and undergoing the intentional process of transformation. Gratitude is highlighted as a key element of the transformed mind, drawing from Proverbs 15:13 and Philippians 4:4-8. The sermon underscores the positive impact of a grateful mindset on one's disposition and interactions, likening it to a glass filled with water. Ephesians 4:23 is introduced to emphasize the continual renewal of the mind's spirit. Believers are encouraged to engage in daily "think sessions," reflecting on God's Word and fostering a grateful attitude toward their identity, God's love, and His plans for the future.

Gratitude is the attitude that sets the altitude for living. Only a fraction of the human population ever truly thank God. There is much to complain about, but the reality is that there is much more to be grateful for. When you reflect on all God has done in your life, you cannot help but be thankful. In this thankfulness, your faith grows, and you experience God's goodness.
In the spirit of Thanksgiving, this week Pastor Dustin talks about the importance of having an attitude of gratitude. Listen in as he goes to Luke 17 and shows us three ways we can have an attitude of gratitude.

Let's be honest for a second. Is gratitude working for you? No, I am not asking whether you are trying to make it work, but whether you truly feel the way you want to feel when you engage in a gratitude practice. If yes, fantastic (read on, as it may be helpful to know why it's working so well) and if not, great too, because we will sort this out. Gratitude is a helpful practice for all parents, when done right. There is enough to worry about in parenting, to have to deal with the troubles that a well-intended practice of gratitude can create. You see, though a simple idea, the practice of gratitude as it has been promoted in the mainstream culture, has lost some of its nuances. And these nuances are pretty essential, if you ask me. When gratitude is approached with the wrong understanding, it can actually make us more anxious and stressed. The way gratitude makes us feel depends on our nervous system. More specifically, it depends on which part of our autonomic nervous system (ANS for short) is engaged when we practice gratitude. If you are not into neuropsych stuff, don't run away from me just yet. I will make this really simple. First, let's start with how you expect to feel when following a gratitude practice. You expect to feel is — peaceful and nourished. What you may feel instead is — a bit more anxious. Not at all what you wanted, right? Why is that? The answer lies in whether you are engaging in more doing in your gratitude practice, as opposed to more being. These two states tend to conflict with one another, and that is why you may not be feeling satisfied with what your gratitude practice does for you. You see, two very different parts of our nervous system are activated when we are doing vs. when we are being. When we are in the doing mode, we engage our sympathetic nervous system. When we are in the being mode, we engage our parasympathetic nervous system. You may not be thinking that you are engaged in a lot of doing when it comes to gratitude, but actually — you may be, without even realizing it. So tune into this week's Episode of The Parenting Presence podcast, where together we sort out these details. It is when we shift from doing to being, that gratitude truly begins to feel like a restorative and supportive practice. Want to explore another important issue?
