Every great story has a villain, and it's important for us to realize that this has its origins in a greater story. The Christian faith holds that our story has a Great Enemy whose sole focus is the destruction of the Kingdom of God by destroying the faith and future of His followers. But the good news is we know his tactics…or do we? Join us this Sunday as Pastor Brandon shows how Jesus clarified for us the way to fight back against the schemes of the enemy.

How would you respond if you looked into the future and perceived a new political leader coming to power that you knew for certain was bent on bringing untold suffering on you and the ones you loved? This was the position Elisha found himself in here in 2 Kings 8. However, Elisha is not the only one who finds himself facing an enemy that is stronger than he is and bent on bringing him harm. Paul tells us that, as Christians, we too find ourselves in a similar situation. In this message, we will consider one of the ways that the Bible calls us to respond to it.

Our great enemy ‘Self-Will’

Bikers Church Cape Town

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 14, 2024 50:25

Our great enemy ‘self-will' By Pastor George Lehman Why talk about “Self-Will” because it's a daily struggle, to surrender our will to God. It's not a suggestion either; it's an on-purpose surrender. Mathew 16:24 (Amp) - Then Jesus said to His disciples, if anyone desires to be My disciple, let him deny himself [disregard, lose sight of, and forget himself and his own interests] and take up his cross and follow Me [cleave steadfastly to Me, conform wholly to My example in living and, if need be, in dying, also]. There's only one effectively redemptive sacrifice – the sacrifice of self-will to make room for the knowledge of God. Self-will is defined as pleasing oneself especially in opposition to the wishes or desires of others. It is often associated with stubbornness, disobedience, and a lack of self-control. Self-will is so enthusiastic and active that it will break a world to pieces to make a stool to sit on. Doing what one wants in spite of the wishes or orders of others. Psalm 78:7-9 (Amp) - That they might set their hope in God and not forget the works of God, but might keep His commandments  And might not be as their fathers--a stubborn and rebellious generation, a generation that set not their hearts aright nor prepared their hearts to know God, and whose spirits were not steadfast and faithful to God. The children of Ephraim were armed and carrying bows, yet they turned back in the day of battle. Hebrews 2:1-3a (Amp) - 1Since all this is true, we ought to pay much closer attention than ever to the truths that we have heard, lest in any way we drift past [them] and slip away. 2For if the message given through angels [the Law spoken by them to Moses] was authentic and proved sure, and every violation and disobedience received an appropriate (just and adequate) penalty. 3How shall we escape [appropriate retribution] if we neglect and refuse to pay attention to such a great salvation [as is now offered to us, letting it drift past us forever]? God has equipped us to surrender our will. 2 Peter 1:3 (Amp) - For His divine power has bestowed upon us all things that [are requisite and suited] to life and godliness, through the [full, personal] knowledge of Him Who called us by and to His own glory and excellence (virtue). He who wishes to fulfil his mission in the world must be a man of one idea, that is of one great overmastering purpose, overshadowing all his aims, and guiding and controlling his entire life.  “Bate”. Will power:  The WILL to act to change. The most useless are those who never change through the years and keep going back to their old ways! When a disciple realizes God is asking him to do something that goes against his own plans or desires, the ‘self-will test' has begun. God has to break our self-will and personal ambitions to enable Him to use us to trust us to do whatever He requires for us to accomplish in His Kingdom work. It's easier to do it God's way because you may not like the way that God chooses to break your obstinate WILL! At times God will ask a disciple to sacrifice even good and appropriate things. He will sometimes even request a disciple to do something for Him and give no logical reason for it. I Just want to say it will never go against His word or get you to sin! By not explaining His request, God is developing child-like faith and obedience in His child's heart. This kind of simple faith is ALWAYS pleasing to God. A good example is Abraham. Genesis 22:1-2 (Amp) - After these events, God tested and proved Abraham and said to him, Abraham! And he said, Here I am.  [God] said, take now your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the region of Moriah; and offer him there as a burnt offering upon one of the mountains of which I will tell you. Tested – critical examination or trial of a person's qualities. Proved – establish validity of (will) Our constant submission to the Lord's will is what true discipleship is all about. The danger of self-will brings destruction into the life of an individual. Proverbs 1:32 (Msg) - Sin and self-satisfaction brings destruction and death to stupid fools. Don't be a stupid fool Self-will stems from pride and produces pride's limitations. Proverbs 16:18 (GW) - Pride precedes a disaster and an arrogant attitude precedes a fall.   The pride of self-will: Blinds us to our weakness. Keeps us from seeking help. Causes us to blame others for problems. Self-will is exhibited in: A refusal to listen to God. A refusal to submit to authority. A refusal to be teachable. A refusal to receive correction. Gods Purpose: (to address our ‘self-will') To reveal our selfishness To reveal our own personal ambitions, plans, wants that are contrary to the purposes of God. To break our self-will. People stuck on themselves are stuck with themselves. You will always be a lonely-hearts club person - A self-willed person is inconsiderate. You listen to no logic reason - A self-willed person is in constant conflict. You always in arguments - Most problems in relationships are due to self-will. Un-surrendered self-will always causes conflict with others. Most issues in churches are as a result of self-will. Be good to remember this if you think you are not vulnerable to failing. (Even an angel became a devil because of self-will.) 2 Corinthians 12:20 (NIV) - For I am afraid that when I come I may not find you as I want you to be and you may not find me as you want me to be.  I fear that there may be quarrelling, jealousy, outbursts of anger, factions, slander, gossip, arrogance, and disorder. Factions – Small group with special aims within a large one. Slander – malicious talk about someone. Gossip – Idle talk about a person. When it comes to surrendering your self-will, it's not that some people have will power and some don't.  It's that some people are ready to change, and others are not. The self-will test will ensure heaven is a perfect place.  No one but those who have submitted their self-will to God will enter. Here is the character of (self will) people (Christians) being exposed....... Jude 1:16-19 (Msg) - These are the "grumpers", the bellyachers, grabbing for the biggest piece of the pie, talking big, saying anything they think will get them ahead. But remember, dear friends, that the apostles of our Master, Jesus Christ, told us this would happen:  "In the last days there will be people who don't take these things seriously anymore.  They'll treat them like a joke, and make a religion of their own whims and lusts." These are the ones who split churches, thinking only of themselves. There's nothing to them, no sign of the Spirit! grumpers = bad  tempered and miserable bellyachers = excessive complainer / whining Please don't be a part of the problem – be part of the solution. The self-will test – every one of us will encounter it in order to see if we are willing to be submissive to serve God's will, especially when it is not comfortable, convenient or self serving.  Where the will is ready, the feet are light. There's only one effectively redemptive sacrifice - the sacrifice of self-will to make room for the knowledge of God. How surrendered is your Will? AMEN

Throughout history, authoritarians have been playing a futile game of whack-a-mole against the truth. Since authoritarians gain and maintain their power by propaganda and lies, it follows that free speech and the truth are their great enemy. No matter what "systems" the authoritarians try to erect to stop people from speaking freely, the truth always prevails. It ends up being spoken from the most unplanned, unexpected, and unpredictable places. Nevertheless, we must forever remain vigilant and defend our ability to speak freely.

SHOW NOTES:   In Podcast Episode 244, “Watch Out for Your Great Enemy..with Your Spiritual Eyes,” Kim discusses the differences between how Bathsheba and King Solomon responded to Adonijah's request. Bathsheba appeared clueless about the schemes of Adonijah, but Solomon immediately knew what his half-brother was attempting. There are lessons in this story for us all.   Our focal passage for this episode is 1 Kings 2:13-25 with verses 21-22 as the focal verses:   21 “Then let your brother Adonijah marry Abishag, the girl from Shunem,” she replied. 22 “How can you possibly ask me to give Abishag to Adonijah?” King Solomon demanded. “You might as well ask me to give him the kingdom! You know that he is my older brother, and that he has Abiathar the priest and Joab son of Zeruiah on his side.” WEEKLY ASSIGNMENT FEATURE:   Pray daily for discernment in your relationships and decisions.   Additional Resources and Scriptures:   The serpent was the shrewdest of all the wild animals the Lord God had made. We settle for fake rest over true rest. and I think it's because none of us really know how to get rest-Our marriage is hanging on by a thread -Our kids are out of control normally -Our internal world is fried What's the answer? ILLUSTRATION:John Orteberg who is an author and Pastor tells a story about a conversation he had with a guy named Dallas Willard - whom I've quoted before. Orteberg had just taken a job at a large well-known church that was known for working its people hard. Orteberg asked Willard if there was anything he should do as he took the job. Willard paused after the question, thought, and then said these words, “You must ruthlessly eliminate hurry, hurry is the great enemy of the spiritual life of today” -Dallas Willard did you hear his response? It wasn't you need to do more, be more, give more, it was your need to ruthlessly eliminate hurry. Reminds me of a story from the Gospels Luke 10:38-42 38 As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him. 39 She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord's feet listening to what he said. 40 But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, “Lord, don't you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!” 41  “Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, 42 but few things are needed—or indeed only one.[f] Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.” Both Martha and Mary were presented with the same opportunity They had Jesus the Messiah sitting right in front of them One chose to sit at his feet, the other chose to be up on her feet. I want you to notice something, Martha is doing what would be expected - she has guests at her house-it would have traditionally been expected for her to be busy - getting stuff done, cooking, cleaning, setting tables-you've seen this at Holiday meals right? ILLUSTRATION: I always picture my Grandma Crockett on my mom's side.  The entire time we were all eating ham and turkey, Grandma would be running around making sure every bowl was full, every plate had food, and then when everyone else was done eating she was washing dishes and finally eating after everyone else had finished. This is how I picture Martha, she's not doing a bad thing - it's a nice good thing But Jesus tells her there is something better 41 “Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, 42 but few things are needed—or indeed only one.[f] Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.” Mary actually is breaking all social and gender norms for her day - and SO is Jesus… It would have been unheard of to have a female disciple to have “sat at the feet of a rabbi” meant to sit and listen as one of his disciples Jesus is telling Martha; sitting at His feet and learning from Him is better than any of the other things that are pressing for her attention. It very much reminds me of this passage that I bring up about 3 times a year because we all need to be reminded so much: Matthew 11:28-30 28 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”  Can I ask you this question: What are you carrying through this world that you need to lay down? What is it? -do you feel responsible for the decisions your kids have made and feel lost in it?  You're carrying this huge burden? -do you feel like all the jobs at your company are depending on you?  If you don't keep carrying the ball, then everything might fall apart? -do you carry the feeling that you're never enough - you've been chasing enough long enough… We all chose what we carry through the day…  through our lives… What if you chose to carry Jesus' burden? What if you let Him carry the impossible loads you are putting on yourself and you ruthlessly slowed down? What if you chose to be Mary, sitting at the Rabbi's feet? CLOSING: At the communion tables, we have some note cards and pens.  Today, during the next song, I want to invite you to write down whatever it is that you are carrying and to leave it today at the cross and then I want to invite you to pause and slow down, to remind yourself that the speed of Jesus is not the speed of the world.  He needs one thing from you, it's your attention - it's your heart and some of you, what you need to lay down, is your heart, because Jesus' offer for life is specifically for you.  He came to give you new life and freedom in Him!
