Fortifying Your Weak Spot - #9955

A Word With You

When our kids were growing up we occasionally had our own personal emergency room at our house! Our youngest son dislocated his ankle in football, so the doctor put an air cast on his ankle for about six weeks for support. Oh, and then the oldest son, yeah he had surgery for a knee injury that he got in sports. So they recommended that he wear a knee brace whenever he played a game where he had to pivot much. So, let's see. You've got your ankle cast; you've got your knee brace. It's all based on a simple principle that prevents further injury. I'm Ron Hutchcraft and I want to have A Word With You today about "Fortifying Your Weak Spot." Okay, our word for today from the Word of God is from Luke 4 where Jesus is in the desert. "He ate nothing during those days and at the end of them He was hungry. The Devil said to Him, 'If you are the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread.' Jesus answered, 'It is written, man does not live on bread alone.'" And at that point He is quoting a Scripture that He has obviously memorized from Deuteronomy 8:3. Okay, where was Jesus' weak spot there in the wilderness? Well, obviously after 40 days, it was His need for food. Where did the Devil aim his temptation? Well, at Jesus' need for food, of course. And you notice Jesus' response - a verse that directly addresses the point where He was vulnerable. It's about bread. It's about food. Basically a verse that says, "Life is bigger than food." Okay, I've got a feeling that wasn't the first time Jesus said that verse. I have a feeling that during those days of fasting, He'd been drawing strength from that verse frequently. It's like a brace on a weakened knee - He applied Scripture to the area where He would tend to be weak. Now, unlike what the four spiritual laws say about God, "God loves you and has a wonderful plan for your life," the Devil hates you and has a terrible plan for your life. He's sized up that vulnerable spot, and he's going to try to bring you down with that. So it's pretty important that you size it up, or you're going to be easy prey. Jesus knew his vulnerable spot, and He braced it with Scripture; specific Scripture that dealt with that specific issue. If the Devil is going to bring you down, what weakness do you think he'll use? Oh, you probably know. He's pushed that button many times. It's worked all too often. See, it's important for you to find Scripture that gives you God's view on your weak spot. Memorize it; repeat it to yourself frequently, not just when you're under attack. I think that's what Jesus did. Re-program yourself by thinking Scripture where you usually think sin, and then hammer the Devil with God's Word and a response that is biblical whenever temptation comes. Temptation comes to the door, God's Word answers it. The Devil can't stand a biblical response. So, where is the hole in your armor; that weak spot? Is it an old bitterness, maybe the tendency to think you're worthless, your sexual desires, maybe your thought life, tending to worry a lot, tending to run ahead of God. The need to be in control all the time. You know what it is. You've lived with that weakness for a long time; now it's time to cover it, fortify it with Scripture. You're ready for the Devil when you keep covering your weak spot with God's Word about it. That's a strong spiritual brace that will help you avoid any further injury. So, support that weak spot with the strength of words from God.

Depending on where the earthquake finds you, you should follow different survival rules. The most important thing in all cases is not to panic and to memorize the Drop, Cover, and Hold on technique. Drop right where you are onto your hands and knees. This is a safe position that allows you to slowly move towards shelter. Use one arm to cover your head and neck. A massive desk or table makes a good shelter. If there's nothing in the room to hide under, at least stay away from the windows. Remain in this position and bend over as much as you can to protect your vital organs. Hold on like this until the shaking stops. If you were able to find some shelter, hold onto it using one hand and be prepared to move with it as it might shift. Music: Versace Beat https://www.youtube.com/audiolibrary/... Hold on like this until the shaking stops. -Move away from power lines, tall buildings, and roads, try to find some shelter, drop, cover, and hold on. -Slow down and find a safe place to stop the car, stay in it until the earthquake stops. -Collect your things immediately and move to higher ground to avoid tsunami. -Lock your wheels, cover, and hold on. -Get on the floor in the space in front of your seat, bend over and cover your head and neck with your hands. Stay calm and reassure others. -Lie down on the floor, cover your head, wait until the elevator starts working again and get out of it ASAP. -Stay in bed, protect your head with a pillow and lie face down, move away from shelves. -Don't move, cover your mouth with a cloth or piece of clothing. If you have a whistle, use it so that rescuers can find you. -Close all windows and shut off the gas, water, and electricity in your home. Kelsey Molloy is the Northern Great Plains Director at The Nature Conservancy and Angel DeVries is the Executive Director of the Ranchers Stewardship Alliance (RSA)– they both live and work on the Northern Great Plains in Malta, Montana. While they work for different organizations, Kelsey and Angel collaborate on a long list of critical projects, most of which are focused on grassland conservation, ranching, and community partnerships.  One of their most notable collaborations involves the Matador Ranch, a 60,000-acre TNC-owned property near Dodson, Montana. The Matador Ranch is home to an outside-the-box conservation initiative known as a grassbank, which is a partnership opportunity that offers ranchers grazing access to rich grasses in exchange for adopting sustainable practices on their own property. This grassbank was introduced during the historic drought of the early 2000s, and it offered much needed grazing opportunities for ranching families whose homeplaces had been hit hard by the dry conditions. Since then, for the past 20+ years, the grassbank has continued to provide win-win solutions for ranchers and conservation-focused non-profit organizations, as well as helping to bolster trust, goodwill, and community cohesiveness. As you'll hear in this conversation, the grassbank has been such a success, the TNC is currently searching for another ranch to acquire and eventually transform into a community led and owned grassbank. This “grassbank 2.0” will not only provide a grazing safety net during times of drought, but will also further the work of providing opportunities for new or young ranchers who are just entering the business but do not yet have the capital to purchase their own land.  We connected via the magic of the internet, and had a wide-ranging conversation about their productive collaboration, grassbanks, challenges and opportunities in the Northern Great Plains, and more. We discussed the work of the Ranchers Stewardship Alliance, the history of the Matador Ranch, and the ins and outs of the Matador Ranch grassbank. We discussed how skyrocketing land values are making it nearly impossible for new ranchers to enter the business, and also how succession planning is becoming an important, but often underappreciated, issue for ranching families. We also talked a lot about the need for optimism and curiosity, the importance of building community, and how TNC and RSA are working to bridge cultural and geographic divides. We also learn about RSA's book club, which will likely be of great interest to many of you. I learned so much from this conversation and appreciate Kelsey and Angel taking time out of their busy schedules to chat with me.  Hope you enjoy! --- Kelsey Molloy Angel DeVries TNC Montana Ranchers Stewardship Alliance Full episode notes & links: https://mountainandprairie.com/kelsey-angel/ --- This episode is brought to you in partnership with the Colorado chapter of The Nature Conservancy and TNC chapters throughout the Western United States. Contrary to popular belief, some islands are actually growing and shifting in shape. The episode discusses a study that looked at the dynamics of over 1,000 islands, particularly focusing on the Maldives, a set of low-lying islands built from atolls. The study revealed changes in island dynamics over the last 20 years. While some islands experienced erosion and loss of ground, others remained stable or even grew in size. In the Maldives, for example, nearly 42% of the islands studied had lost ground to erosion, but a similar proportion (39%) were stable or had shifted in shape. Surprisingly, 20% of the islands had grown, with humans even creating new land in some areas. Specific examples highlighted in the podcast include the Huvadu Atoll in the Maldives, where researchers studied aerial and satellite imagery of 184 islands. They found that while some islands lost ground to erosion, others shifted in shape or grew in size. The episode also mentions the transformation of an island from a potato shape to a teardrop shape over the past half-century, showcasing the dynamic nature of these islands. Furthermore, the podcast emphasizes the importance of understanding these island dynamics to prepare for the impacts of climate change. By studying how currents, storms, and sediment deposition affect islands, researchers can better predict and adapt to changes. The episode also draws parallels with the Mississippi Delta, where human interventions disrupted natural processes and had to be adjusted to allow for the growth of certain areas. Overall, the episode underscores the complexity of island dynamics in the face of climate change. It challenges the notion that all islands will vanish, highlighting that some will grow and shift in shape. This information is crucial for coastal communities, conservation efforts, and adaptation strategies to protect and preserve these island environments in the future. Monitoring island dynamics is crucial to understand changes and impacts on residents and businesses. The episode highlights the importance of studying how islands are adapting to climate change, sea level rise, and other environmental factors. The study discussed in the podcast focused on over 1,000 islands, including the Maldives, to analyze how these islands have been shaped by shifting climate change scenarios, such as sea level rise and storm surges. The Maldives, a set of low-lying islands, have been a prime example of how islands are responding to these changes. Some islands in the Maldives are just six feet above sea level, making them vulnerable to erosion and sea level rise. The study revealed that while some islands experienced erosion and loss of ground, others remained stable or even grew in size. This dynamic nature of islands underscores the need for continuous monitoring to understand the changes and their impacts on residents and businesses. By monitoring island dynamics, researchers can track erosion, land loss, and changes in shape over time. This information is crucial for predicting future trends and implementing measures to protect communities living on these islands. For instance, the study mentioned how some areas in the Maldives had to shore up their land due to erosion, which exposed buried bodies from a cemetery and a mosque. Preserving cultural heritage and ensuring the safety of residents are key considerations in island monitoring efforts. Furthermore, the episode discussed the case of the Mississippi Delta, where human interventions like seawalls and man-made structures disrupted natural erosion and deposition processes. This interference had unintended consequences, highlighting the importance of understanding and respecting natural dynamics in coastal areas. In conclusion, monitoring island dynamics is essential for assessing changes, predicting future impacts, and implementing adaptive measures to protect residents and businesses. By studying how islands evolve in response to environmental challenges, researchers can provide valuable insights for coastal communities to adapt and thrive in the face of climate change. Collaboration with coastal communities is crucial in preparing for and adapting to changes caused by climate change. The episode highlights the importance of working closely with people living in small island states, like the Maldives, to understand how their islands are adapting to sea level rise and other climate change impacts. These communities are directly affected by the changing dynamics of their islands, and their knowledge and experiences are invaluable in developing effective strategies for resilience. The episode discusses how researchers studied over 1,000 islands, including the Maldives, to observe changes in island dynamics over time. By analyzing aerial and satellite imagery, researchers found that some islands were eroding while others were growing or shifting in shape. This information underscores the need for ongoing monitoring and collaboration with local communities to understand the reasons behind these changes and to plan for the future. Furthermore, the episode mentions the importance of preserving cultural heritage and ancestral sites on these islands. As erosion and sea level rise threaten these areas, it becomes essential to work with coastal communities to protect their history and traditions. By involving these communities in decision-making processes and providing them with the necessary tools and knowledge, it ensures that their needs and concerns are addressed in adaptation strategies. The episode also draws parallels with the Mississippi Delta, where human interventions disrupted natural processes and had unintended consequences. This serves as a cautionary tale, emphasizing the importance of understanding and respecting the natural dynamics of coastal areas. By collaborating with coastal communities, scientists, conservationists, and policymakers can develop sustainable solutions that consider both environmental and social factors. In conclusion, the episode highlights that collaboration with coastal communities is not only essential but also beneficial in preparing for and adapting to climate change impacts. By working together, we can create resilient and sustainable strategies that protect both the environment and the livelihoods of those living in vulnerable coastal areas.

Bees are not alone in their fight to survive. While the backyard beekeeper might start with a pollinator garden, researchers are also busy strengthening and shoring up these vulnerable organisms that are an essential part of our food ecosystem. Jay Evans explains some promising efforts, telling listeners What the main stressors for bees are, from diseases to pests, Why protecting a middle-aged bee from stressors impacts the entire colony, and What exciting new management strategies are in the works, including botanical medicines for bees. Jay Evans is with the USDA ARS Bee Research Laboratory in Maryland. He and his colleagues are approaching bee health from every angle, assessing direct and indirect factors that increase bee health and lessening those that cause habitat harm. The list is long, from increasing nutrition to mitigating pesticide effects, parasites, and the spread of viruses. online pharmacy online pharmacyOften the best solutions provide a path for the bees to help themselves. Evans and his group in particular work on bolstering the honey bee immune system. Just as humans find their health affected by stress, so do bees, from temperature changes to chemical stress to nest disturbances. These stresses makes the bees more vulnerable to direct threats like parasites and pathogens. online pharmacy buy ivermectin over the counter online pharmacyTheir close living quarters in the beekeeping industry make for further vulnerabilities. Once a colony in an apiary is infected with a pathogen, it spreads fairly quickly through the apiary. online pharmacy buy trazodone over the counter online pharmacyResearchers like Evans are helping them tolerate those invasions and push the pathogens out over time. He describes some of the most promising efforts, from breeding for "varroa-sensitive hygiene" to developing disease-fighting medicines from botanical sources.
