The Heidelberg Catechism Lord's Day 24
Recorded February 25, 2024 Pastor Larry Stephens brings a sermon, from Acts 16:11-15, on the proper place of pray. A few questions to consider, "When was the last time you prayed for your lost friends and family?" When was the last time you prayed for your church and the leaders? The apostles looked for every opportunity to preach Jesus, and in this episode, the Lord called Lydia into salvation and she and her household was saved.

Rev. Joshua Haller, pastor at Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church in Fairgrove, MI, joins host Rev. Timothy Appel to study Leviticus 17:1-16. The LORD instructs His people concerning the proper place for worship. Their sacrifices are not to be made wherever they want, but in the place that He has directed. In this way, they will not bear the guilt of their sins, but their guilt will be taken away. Similarly, the LORD instructs His people concerning the proper content of their worship, especially regarding blood. Unlike pagan practices that sought to gain spiritual power by consuming the blood of animals, the LORD forbid His people to drink the blood of their sacrifices or of any animals, for God had placed their life within the blood. This prepared the way for Christ's own words in His new testament. God's people were not to seek life by consuming any blood in the old covenant because He gives life in His Divine Blood in the Sacrament in the new covenant. “The Holiness of God” is a series on Sharper Iron that goes through the book of Leviticus. Because God desired to dwell among His sinful people for their blessing rather than their destruction, He gave them the sacrifices and regulations of Leviticus to bestow His holiness upon them. In this way, the book of Leviticus points us to Christ who is our great High Priest who offered Himself as the perfect sacrifice to make us holy before God.

Riches do not profit in the day of wrath, but righteousness delivers from death. 11:4 Better is a little with the fear of the Lord than great treasure and trouble with it. 15:16 A good name is to be chosen rather than great riches, and favor is better than silver or gold. 22:1 Whoever is greedy for unjust gain troubles his own household, but he who hates bribes will live. 15:27

For the past two years we've all heard the mantra, “Listen to the Experts!” It's well past the time to ask if this is appropriate, and to discuss the right and wrong ways for Christians to follow and think about experts. Should expertise be used as a baseball bat to keep people in line? Are experts lofty beings who cannot be questioned and whose word is law? Is expertise even real? In this episode we discuss the nature of expertise itself, and how God created it for a purpose. We talk about how we should think about experts, how we can use them without giving them more authority than they should have, and how we can answer those who try to use experts to control us. Perhaps most importantly, we talk about how expertise works and exists within the church and what it looks like when things get out of balance. As a culture, we are obsessed with penises. Our society often associates the phallus with social power and worth. And the pervasive focus on the phallus has a greater and potentially more negative impact on a plethora of issues, such as the self worth of women and men and gender equality, than many realize. Today I am talking to an expert on all things penis. Emily Willingham is the author of Phallacy: Life Lessons From the Animal Penis. Her writing has also been published in the New York Times, Scientific American, Forbes, the Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post and many others. She has a PhD in biological sciences and a BA in English literature, both from The University of Texas at Austin. In Phallacy, Emily Willingham explores animal genitalia while also delving into the social and cultural significance of penises as symbols of power and identity. She challenges the notion that the penis makes the man and the fallacy sold to many of us is that the penis signals dominance and power. In short: Emily Willingham thinks it's time to put the human penis into perspective ... for the sake of all of humanity.
