How are you coping with the current trauma? Whilst no two stories are the same, people the world over are experiencing various levels of loss. And with that loss comes grief. Whether you are experiencing the loss of a loved one, freedom of movement, your income, or the life you knew before Covid-19, give yourself permission to grieve. My guest today, Harriet Cabelly, is a grief counsellor and positive psychology coach who talks about post-traumatic growth (the positive change and growth that comes about as a result of an adversity or loss). Because, although you may have no control over the bigger picture, you can choose - in the tiny daily decisions that you make - how you respond to your difficulties. There is hope. And there are other opportunities. How will YOU bounce back from this adversity?
Thriving in the Midst of Chaos: Parenting With Special Needs Kids
Episode 28: Raising a Special Needs Child Into Adulthood With Guest Harriet Cabelly In this episode, we discuss raising a child with special needs children into adulthood, and grief over the "loss of a shattered dream." Harriet's daughter, Nava, was born with agenesis of the corpus callosum. When her daughter was diagnosed, Harriet became very upset. She heard a lecture from a doctor who discussed parents going through the grief process when their child is diagnosed with a different need. She found psychotherapy and group therapy very helpful to help her through her grief. When you are pregnant, you expect a "normal and healthy" baby and when that doesn't happen, your dream may feel shattered. She found it helpful to "rebuild her new reality" and to set new dreams and goals within that new reality. Her daughter is now an adult. However, Harriet had to figure out how to facilitate the transition to adulthood. She first decided to think about what she was parenting toward, meaning what are your ultimate goals for the child and how can you assist the child to be as independent as they can be. To prepare her daughter for the transition, she made sure not to pity or enable her daughter, tolerate it when her daughter struggled, and to assist her daughter with being as independent as she could be. Assisting the child in gaining a sense of self-pride and self-esteem was very important. She highly recommends getting on a wait-list for independent living a few years prior to when you expect your child to be ready to move into independent living. It was also helpful for her to find and work with a special needs attorney or elder lawyer, in order to gain assistance and education regarding supplemental needs trusts and guardianship. Regarding work, she also recommends that the child obtain assistance and services through vocational rehabilitation. It is helpful to think about what your child likes and what his/her strengths are to help him/her find a job that is a good fit. She also found it helpful to have a Medicaid service coordinator that oversees things. If you have other children, it is really important to make sure you have one on one time with those other children as well. Harriet Cabelly’s book, Living Well Despite Adversity: Inspiration for Finding Renewed Meaning and Joy in Your Life, began as a blog entitled, “Rebuild Life Now.” Seeking to represent a “diversity of adversity,” the author conducted monthly interviews with the likes of Cheryl Strayed, Temple Grandin, Meredith Viera, and other lesser-known people, all who have adversity in common. Now, collecting her 36 conversations in a book, Cabelly shares stories of heartbreak and grief, pain and persistence. These interviews illustrate how some have managed to transcend grand challenges by choosing to not only live through adversity but to thrive because of it. KEY POINTS When shattered dreams become adversity, we need to rebuild new dreams around our new reality. Unloading = painful journey of going into “a dark pit” of heart-wrenching feelings, which you must go through in order to come through; a liberating experience that releases toxicity Integrating (vs. overcoming, putting behind) - incorporating a challenge by making it part of your new normal with new dreams and goals Asking “Why?” is a waste of energy; instead, ask “How…?” Asking for help to get the support you need takes strength and courage. Writing can be a coping tool for grief and a mechanism to make sense of hard times. Starting an organization to help others who go through similar challenges can be healing. Regardless of why people are hit by adversity, their grieving experience is very similar. By going deep into the pain and allowing yourself to feel hurt, small openings let you see new possibilities, helping you repurpose yourself. Having a newly discovered purpose allows you to go forward living a life with real meaning (Viktor Frankl) When we let down our guard and become vulnerable, we morph into genuine human beings with authentic emotions, which connect us on the deepest human level. QUOTES FROM CABELLY "It’s no big deal to live well when all is going well in our lives, but my keen interest has been in those who have a lot of pain and hardship to deal with, yet still manage to—dare I say—thrive. I am in awe of such people." “What does it mean then to live well? It means living with a sense of meaning and purpose, with an ability to experience joy and satisfaction. It means to embrace the positive and deal with the negative; to live aligned with one’s values; to live with intention and be an active creator of our life, to put our best self forward so we can positively impact and be of service to others while we occupy a place on this earth.” “When adversity knocks us for a loop, living well means taking on the challenge and integrating it into our life. It’s not about succumbing to the problems and becoming a victim, or deciding on some level that our life is over because of them. It’s not about becoming bitter; it’s about becoming better.” “Each story is one of success since the people in them have all been able to not just live, but thrive. I offer them as inspiration and as a way for you to see and learn that you too can do it. We are not fixed human beings. We all have the capacity and potential to be more than we are, and to change—even in baby steps.” RECOMMENDATION Search Harriet Cabelly's book for many additional books written by the people she interviewed. Harriet Cabelly's dream of the perfect child was shattered when her daughter was diagnosed with neurological deficits at just nine months old. "Why me?" became her mantra. Another medical crisis in her daughter's life challenged Harriet to practice exercising her muscle of resilience and that defining moment in her life laid the foundation for her new book, Living Well Despite Adversity.
