Some folks are worried about the conflicts of certain SCOTUS Justices (and their wives). Some are buying into conspiracy theories that have been distilled into talking points about a "weaponized Department of Justice." So we're taking a step back to say, "Relax. The judiciary branch is actually working well." It would mean so much if you could leave us a review: https://ratethispodcast.com/goodfaithpolitics In this episode, we start out with a brief assessment of conversations around Israel, the protests and review this complex set of issues. But then we get into concerns related to the U.S. judiciary's actions, including cases from January 6th and high-profile trials involving Donald Trump. Despite some flaws, the judiciary is functioning well. So we highlight instances where the justice system upheld democratic principles. Any jazz aficionado knows the musical virtues of jazz, whether they are a musician, a jazz writer, or simply a committed jazz listener. In classical Western thought (that is, in the musings of cats like Aristotle and Plato) a virtue is a kind of excellence in performance that flows from a settled habit. One who plays the flute as it ought to be played—the proper tone, pitch, and timing—displays a virtue or sharp skill in that musical instrument. One may be virtuous with respect to any endeavor worth doing, since anything worth doing is worth doing well. One who masters a worthwhile skill is a virtuoso. The four virtues of jazz that translate to other areas of life: Tradition Collaboration Improvisation Transcendence For more, see Douglas Groothuis's articles on jazz at www.AllAboutJazz.com and Ted Gioia, The Imperfect Art. New national regulations in Australia reflect the outcomes of an independent review of Australia's model Work Health and Safety laws in 2018, which recommended more specific guidance on how to identify and manage psychosocial risks. Psychosocial hazards are hazards that may cause psychological harm. These new regulations are part of a significant national effort to better address the risks caused by psychosocial hazards at work and recognise that a worker's psychological health is just as important as their physical health. How do you and your organization build a culture of psychologically safe space enabling more human connection and trust? Join us as we speak with Vicky Smith about her research and work on this ever-important topic and the shift that is needed urgently. Vicky has her Masters in Organisational Development, Psychology, and Applied Health and Exercise, she is currently working on her PhD researching psychological safety in organizations. She is also qualified as an NLP trainer, psychotherapist, and executive coach. As you can see from her bio, she is an avid and lifelong learner. She is also the co-author of “Brave New Leader”.During our discussion, we dive into the acceleration of change taking place and how there is little to no stability, many not knowing what the future holds and how difficult that can be for many. She emphasized the pressure that is mounting for people and the need for a better balance between pressure and performance. Individuals struggle with the choices between family and work, lacking boundaries and needing to check in with themselves and what best serves them. While organizations are hanging on by the fingernails, attempting to stay competitive, and lots of cost-cutting, the pressure is pushed down to the people and then the pressure escalates. Some of her tips are for creating a culture of expression, one that is trusting and can be trusted. Treating people as people and finding their strengths. Teams don't work in isolation so that encourages building relationships throughout the organization. The need to pay attention to the eye-rolling, backstabbing or gossiping, and side glances all give you clues to what is going on. So that's when we need to slow it down and determine the pinch point and the culture shift required. What is the culture we have created implied or explicit? Being aware of those subtleties can start to shift and gain buy-in from the teams. But also, there is a need for candid conversations with the intent to support. Feedback is a Gift!!! Would love to hear your thoughts on the conversation and what you see happening in your organization. Interested in learning more about your leadership capabilities? Welcome to Tip Of The Week #10: Working Well: Tips for Improving Your Wellness While on the Job. In this episode I share how tips to create wellness at the workplace. My biggest tip to be sure you have great ergonomics. Always be sure that your elbows, hips, and knees are at a 90 degree angle to reduce stress and tension on your muscles. See more tips below! Take breaks: Sitting for prolonged periods of time can be detrimental to your health. Make sure to take breaks every 30 minutes to stretch your legs, get some fresh air and give your eyes a rest. Stay hydrated: Drinking enough water is essential for maintaining good health. Keep a water bottle at your desk and sip frequently throughout the day. Practice good posture: Sitting up straight can help prevent back pain and improve circulation. Make sure your chair and desk are ergonomically designed to support good posture. Take the stairs: Instead of taking the elevator, opt for the stairs whenever possible. This will help you get some exercise and burn some extra calories. Pack healthy snacks: Instead of reaching for sugary or salty snacks, pack healthy options like fresh fruit, nuts, and seeds. This will help you stay energized and focused throughout the day. Practice deep breathing: Taking a few deep breaths can help reduce stress and improve focus. Take a few minutes each day to practice deep breathing exercises. Take a walk: Getting outside for a quick walk can help clear your mind and improve your mood. Take a quick walk during your lunch break or schedule a walking meeting. Stretch: Taking a few minutes each day to stretch can help prevent muscle tension and improve flexibility. Incorporate stretching into your breaks or during conference calls. Practice mindfulness: Taking a few minutes each day to practice mindfulness can help reduce stress and improve focus. Try a meditation app or take a quick mindfulness break during your workday. Get enough sleep: Getting enough sleep is essential for good health and productivity. Aim for 7-8 hours of sleep each night and establish a regular bedtime routine. We are seeing a growing awareness of neurodiversity today. Still, there is a long way to go to fully embrace an inclusive workplace for neurodistinct people. Here to help us understand how to better facilitate a neurodistinct advocacy at work is Jennifer Grindeland, a coach and the CEO of The Working Well. Jenn teaches leadership skills designed to support invisible disabilities and neurodiversity in the workplace. In this episode, she talks to Whitney Lauritsen about creating a workplace that supports neurodivergent people where they can set themselves up for success. She also talks about DEIA initiatives such as diversity recruitment and being intentional in our communication. As a multiple brain injury survivor, Jenn has had to relearn how to live her life. She then defines invisible disability, managing symptoms, and knowing your limits. By speaking about her experiences, Jenn is normalizing differences. She distinguishes between disability and difference and reveals why she uses the phrase, “hidden differences.” Jenn also shares tips on asking for what you need, diving into communication tactics, and taking away barriers to making our communities better. It is time we remove implicit biases towards disability that are ingrained in the culture. Let us begin to create positive change together, starting with this conversation.Love the show?
