Welcome to another solo episode. This topic has come up several times with guests and I wanted to do a whole episode on it because it's that important and it's not talked about enough. Some say survivorship starts as soon as you are diagnosed. I think it should be defined as everything that happens after the end of active treatment. Sounds like what we all want, right? Treatment done, no evidence of disease, back to normal life. Unfortunately, it's often not that simple. It can be very emotional and not necessarily in a good way. Let's discuss...This episode is for everyone! I talk to people going through active treatment right now, those who have finished active treatment and may be experiencing this emotional roller coaster, and caregivers/family/friends.We talk a lot about normalizing cancer and treatment. We need to normalize the emotions of survivorship as well. And the podcast is almost a year old!!! The first episode launched on March 5, 2024. Happy Anniversary to The Many Faces of Cancer!!! I want to kick things up a notch for year 2, so I need to hear from you! What do you want to hear? How can I make this podcast even better for all of you? Do you make New Years Resolutions every year only to be disappointed when you can't keep them? Do you set goals that you don't achieve? It can be so disheartening and then what happens the rest of the year?I gave up making resolutions years ago because I always ended up feeling like a failure for not keeping them. We all have down days. We all have times where we just don't wanna...I couple years ago I decided to try something different. I started creating new habits after reading James Clear's "Atomic Habits". https://www.amazon.com/Atomic-Habits-Proven-Build-Break/dp/0735211299/ref=tmm_hrd_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=&sr=I highly recommend reading this book. In this solo episode, I talk about a couple of examples of new habits I created that I still have in place. It takes a lot of the pressure off of having to keep resolutions, in my opinion. It's easier, more fun, and you feel like a success when they stick. As always, thank you so much for listening! This is the 50th episode and we're just getting started! Happy New Year and may 2025 be your best year yet!
Today's guest is Katie Smith, diagnosed with terminal brain cancer in 2012. Over 12 years later, she's thriving in life after beating the odds!! Katie began writing a blog to keep her friends and family updated on her treatments and progress. She continued that blog for 4 years, even after treatment was finished. That blog eventually turned into her book "Welcome to Katie's Brain: A Brain Cancer Survivor's Story" (https://www.amazon.com/Welcome-Katies-Brain-Cancer-Survivors/dp/1977267106/ref=tmm_pap_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&sr=)Looking back today, she is so grateful to have taken the time to write everything down as it was happening. Her children, who were 1 and 6 when she was diagnosed, grew up in this blog and they can read about things they were too young to remember. Katie still faces some challenges (brain cancer always leaves its mark), and she is living a full life with her husband and now teenage children, being the survivor so many diagnosed with brain cancer turn to for hope. You can find Katie on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/katiekaisersmith/Let me know your takeaways from this episode on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/melissagrosboll/, email me at drmelissagrosboll@gmail.com, or text me at 720-201-4292.And if you love this episode and this podcast, a review would be much appreciated!

That is the question... When we receive a cancer diagnosis (or any other issue, to be honest), do we share it with others? If so, who do we tell? Family? Close friends? All the world through social media channels? And how do we decide?I'm not here to tell you what to do. I didn't want anyone telling me what to do when I was diagnosed. I talk in this solo episode about the upsides and downsides of all of the above options. Maybe you'll see a different way of looking at things that may help you decide if you want to share with others or not.Let me know what takeaways you got from this episode. I'd love to hear from you! Today's solo episode is something that has been on my heart almost since I was diagnosed. I love people who are supportive and there for their loved ones. When I was first diagnosed, I didn't tell anyone outside my immediate family and a few close friends. I didn't want a lot of unsolicited advice. I was overwhelmed by the solicited advice I was getting from my medical team. I know people mean well and naturally want to "fix" things and make them better. That's usually not possible when faced with a cancer diagnosis. On the other side, people come to me asking for advice on what they should do, which treatments they should have, etc. That's another slippery slope. What do you tell someone asking for this kind of advice? We break it all down in this episode. How to handle those situations, no matter which end you are on. Granted, it's only my opinion, and I'm continuing to learn. These are some tips that have worked for me.Let me know what you think of the episode and how you're going to use this information going forward.
