So many of us have been made to feel like we should just be “okay” after cancer—that if we're not constantly “beating it” or “staying strong,” then somehow we're failing. That we should be grateful it was “only” this stage, “only” this treatment. But the truth is, it's not only anything. It's hard, it's relentless, and the weight of having to hold it together for everyone else can be exhausting. And yet, within this shared experience, there is so much strength. Today, we're joined by the wonderful Henny Flynn, a therapeutic coach who helps people navigate change with clarity and compassion. Together, we talk about what it means to really show ourselves kindness—to acknowledge what we've been through, to release the guilt, and to build ourselves back up in a way that feels true. But this episode isn't just a conversation between the two of us. Our community was right there with us, sharing their stories, their struggles, and their moments of realisation. It's honest, emotional, and full of the kind of support that only those who get it can give. So, let's talk about confidence, self-worth, and the power of compassion—not just from others, but from ourselves.Episode Highlights:00:00 Intro06:43 "Embracing Self-Compassion During Hardships"12:42 "It's Okay to Feel 'Not Okay'"18:52 "Unacknowledged Truth"32:27 Unanticipated Menopause Impact40:54 Inner Connection and Self-Awareness45:29 Finding Strength and Self-Compassion50:39 "Empowerment Through Unexpected Connection"Here are all of Henny's wonderful resources for you:My darling girl - these poems are love letters to all the girls & women we have ever been. Having the privilege of listening and learning from Jim Madrid is our gift to you. On April 1, 2022, I was diagnosed with stage four pancreatic cancer, which I overcame, only for it to morph into non-small cell lung cancer, which I also defeated. Presently, I serve as a patient ambassador at City of Hope in Orange County, CA. Despite these victories, I find it difficult to celebrate, knowing so many others are still fighting this dreadful disease. I make myself available to talk to not only cancer patients about having a positive mindset but also to others that may be facing a challenge. My mindset when I was diagnosed, I could either take is as a death sentence or an OPPORTUNITY TO TRIUMPH. I took the latter. Welcome back to A Mental Health Break! There is lots of information out there about the menopause but hardly any if you have had a cancer diagnosis as well. Many people say to me they have no idea what their options are, who to ask for help, and that they feel really isolated in their experiences. I started this podcast because there was nothing out there when I was thrown into surgical menopause at the age of 39, which followed on from my cancer diagnosis aged 33.Through the episodes, I want to create more awareness, share information from our fabulous guest experts, doctors and other specialists in the cancer and menopause field. And of course, I will share stories from the people in our community. So that together we can work towards a better menopause experience. For all of us.More educated, better informed and less alone.Connect with Dani:Instagram @healthywholeme Facebook: @healthywholeme Join Dani's private Facebook group:

Emotional Expedition: A Journey of Healing with Meghan Thomas
In a recent podcast episode Meg had an enlightening conversation with Annabel Chown, a breast cancer survivor, architect, yoga teacher, and author. Annabel shared her journey from diagnosis to recovery, the emotional and physical challenges she faced, and how she found a new sense of purpose and direction in life. Annabel was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 31. She was working as an architect, leading a busy life, and was in the prime of her youth when the diagnosis came. The news was shocking and life-altering. The emotional toll was significant. She grappled with fear, self-consciousness, and body image issues. Despite these challenges, Annabel found solace in her yoga practice. It provided a sense of peace and connection to a part of herself that felt spacious and calm. She eventually became a yoga teacher, eager to share the benefits she had experienced with others. Annabel also underwent testing for the BRCA gene, a gene associated with a higher risk of breast and ovarian cancer. She tested positive, which led to further surgeries, including a mastectomy and the removal of her ovaries. This decision was made more complex by her desire to have a child. After a long journey, including IVF, Annabel and her husband were blessed with a son. She acknowledges the challenges of infertility, which affects one in six women, and the stress of modern life that can contribute to these struggles. Today, Annabel leads a quiet, balanced life. She wakes up early for her yoga and meditation practice, spends quality time with her son, and dedicates time to her writing. She has written a book about her journey, transforming her challenging experience into a beautiful piece of work. Annabel's story is a testament to resilience and the power of self-care. She has navigated her way through life-altering experiences, finding strength in her body, solace in her yoga practice, and a new sense of purpose in her writing. Her journey serves as an inspiration for others facing similar challenges, reminding us all of the importance of emotional readiness, self-care, and the power of sharing our stories. Listen to your inner voice and get good at listening to what you know is true. 2. People often do not feel heard in the medical system. 3. Fear of recurrence is the most common side effect of cancer. 4. Many people finish treatment feeling disempowered because the system has been making decisions for them. 5. Cancer is complex! You can't simply draw a straight line from a certain cause to the reason why a person got cancer.
As a young woman, Georgie faced cancer twice. Her body changed before her eyes, as she was faced with the battle for her life all while being congratulated for her thinness (we know, we're rolling our eyes too). Diet culture and health intersect in Georgie's story as she shares the lessons she learned from her fight with cancer, including the ebbs and flows of a body and a purpose BEYOND just losing and gaining weight - while also admitting, it's not always been so easy. We also discuss the great lack of information around menopause, especially for younger women who have no idea what to expect and how to prepare for what's to come. It's common for us to skip over an episode if we feel like a topic doesn't apply to us, or if we feel nervous to listen. This particular episode is for everyone, and we're going to help you feel more confident thinking about cancer either for yourself, or in your family and loved ones. I'm joined today by Dr. Martha Sharpe ND who focuses her practice on cancer survivorship. We discuss her personal journey with a cancer diagnosis and how she felt as a healthcare practitioner trying to navigate the system. Martha has dedicated her career to helping women understand how to reduce their personal cancer risk, but also to feel empowered in their survivorship. In this episode we cover: The importance of feeling autonomous in your health care. The difference between prevention and blame. How to stack your health deck in your favour to reduce your cancer risk. The impact of alcohol on cancer risk. How an anti-cancer lifestyle is actually a whole-health lifestyle. You don't need to spend a ton of money to have an anti-cancer health plan. Dr. Martha Sharpe, ND, is a Naturopathic Doctor in Barrie, Ontario, Canada. Dr. Martha is dedicated to filling this gap and rewriting cancer survivorship with comprehensive, individualized, and holistic care. She is passionate about helping people find the clarity and empowerment they need to step back into life post-cancer, and feel at home in their bodies again. WAIT!!! Before you run off thinking this episode doesn't apply to you, think again! The Cancer Hangover is a metaphor for any major life event, illness or what we call in our book “Courageous Money”, A Life Falls Event. Any event that causes upheaval or major transition in your life qualifies for “hangover” status if you are coming out of the fog and re-adjusting to a new reality! February 4th was World Cancer Day and we thought it a perfect time to talk about what life after cancer in our household is looking like. Yes, those who are fortunate to be cancer free after their battles have everything to be grateful for, but it doesn't mean there isn't sometimes an adjustment period afterward. We call it the “Bewilderment Zone.” A “Where do we go from here?” kind of place where you're striving to get a foothold on what in many cases is a new, yet undefined you! If you are in a partnership, this can be even more interesting. Today we are not discussing so much the physical aspects of adjusting to life after cancer because everyone's cancer journey is different. For instance in CC's case, lots of extra trips to the bathroom in a day! But rather the emotional aspects. The things that are harder to see but just as important to sort out so you can live bold! When you've been diagnosed with cancer, sex is often the last thing on your mind. There are many different factors that may affect your sex life. In this week's season 4 finale episode of Stork'd, we are joined by Tracy Weiss. Tracy is a cancer survivor who lost her chance of having biological children and in so doing, she gives up on the vision she has of a future daughter to be named Moxie. Tracy's journey is full of surprises and tough decisions that she had to make at the young age of 30. One of the biggest surprises is that her insurance company considered her egg and embryo freezing treatment prior to surgery and chemo to be “elective” which led her to her mission now to help other women facing cancer to access fertility preservation treatments. Tracy discusses what it was like jumping back into the “real world” post-cancer, and how her mindset changed as she went through the healing process mentally and physically. She also discusses dating in your early 40's post cancer. Tune in this outstanding season finale episode to hear Tracy discuss how her journey has led her to the company Chick Mission, and their dedication to helping other women with a cancer diagnosis preserve their fertility. IN THIS EPISODE: [2:34] Introduction to Tracy Weiss. [4:00] Information about The Chick Mission. [5:41] What was Tracy's life before she was diagnosed with cancer? [9:22] Tracy talks about the journey of discovering she had cancer. [16:24] How did Tracy tell her friends and family and handle the information about her diagnosis? [22:15] How many different doctors did Tracy see throughout this journey without hearing that she should preserve her fertility? [25:43] Did Tracy always appreciate her amazing set of friends and community? [29:26] What is fertility preservation? [32:12] Tracy tells us more about freezing embryos. [34:32] How did it feel for Tracy to re-enter life post-cancer? [39:15] What happened to Tracy's embryo's when she got divorced? What was her grieving process? [42:10] What is the dating experience after cancer? KEY TAKEAWAYS: Your reality isn't a fact for everyone. Something you may have, someone else may be longing for. Each person in your life can offer you different experiences in your life. Someone around you has likely experienced something that you are going through or knows someone who has gone through it. Insurance providers don't consider Cancer an eligible diagnosis for fertility preservation, the Chick Mission is working to change that. The flexibility you don't have with embryos you have with eggs. An embryo has to be owned by two people, which has legal implications. RESOURCE LINKS North Forkd Instagram The Chick Mission Website Chick Mission Instagram Stork'd Facebook Page Stork'd on Instagram Stork'd YouTube Channel About Tracy Weiss Tracy Weiss is a cancer survivor who was diagnosed with cervical cancer at age 30. She definitely knew what the cervix did, no matter what anyone tells you. Tracy was pretty annoyed when her insurance company denied her claim to preserve her fertility under it being ‘elective' -- as if having a tumor was something anyone would choose. She remained pretty pissed until The Chick Mission was founded to help women standing in her shoes -- now she gets her revenge every time another woman receives assistance from the organization. Tracy serves as our Executive Director and Chief Creative Officer with her magical blend of Email Inbox Management and OddBall Ideas.
