Welcome to 'Self Care Sundays,' on the No Problem Parenting podcast. Sundays often signify a day to rest and recharge before the start of a new week. We will focus on self-care for parents and give you ideas on being more intentional about caring for yourself to better care for your kids. We'll sprinkle in some episodes of self-care for kids too. Today's resources are about what we put in and on our bodies that help us feel good from the inside out and outside in. How do you do self care? What does self care mean for you? Self Care can be whatever makes you smile and fills your cup. I encourage you to Intentionally Do something kind for yourself, rest and rejuvenate. My favorite resource for knowing which foods and products are better than others is the Healthy Living EWG environmental working group FREE App : EWG Healthy Living on apple or on google play here: EWG Healthy Living app on google play From snacks to shampoos: We're exposed to chemicals every second, yet we know very little about them. To help you learn about the foods and products you're bringing into your home and make safer choices, EWG created the Healthy Living App which has trusted ratings for more than 160,000 food, cleaning and cosmetics products are at your fingertips. Just scan a barcode, search the product by name or browse by category, and EWG will give you an easy-to-understand 1 to 10 score (1 being the best!), backed by science you can trust. The free app helps you feel confident in what you are bringing into your home. And its fun to teach your kids and teens about the Healthy Living app, download it to their phone or tablet and let them scan products when you're shopping too! It's not just about food and skincare; it's about the things we are breathing in everyday that we might not even know are toxic. Think laundry detergent, fabric softeners and perfume for instance. The average American adult uses about 12 personal care products a day, resulting in exposure to an average of 168 unique chemicals. Children are also exposed to products containing risky chemicals during critical stages of childhood development. As these products range from toothpaste to makeup, it is easy for companies to conceal harmful chemicals that risk American livelihoods. Chemicals in beauty and personal care products have been linked to a variety of health concerns. When I was struggling with my health eight years ago, I was jumping around from doctor to chiropractor to acupuncturist — but nothing seemed to help. Then a good friend recommended Dr. Apostolos Lekkos, a functional medicine doctor located in Santa Monica. I didn’t even know what functional medicine was at the time, but my experience has been life-changing! I’m not being hyperbolic at all when I say that, either, and there is no one else I trust more with my clients. We discuss what functional medicine even is, what does and doesn’t work within the Western medical system, how he creates customized treatment plans for each individual, and how his practice has changed to look holistically at mind, body and spirit. You will learn about... (01:25) What is functional medicine? (6:20) The diagnostic tools that Dr. Lekkos uses + how his practice has changed over the past few years (13:30) Supplementing with glutathione: good or bad? (20:20) Other supplements that Dr. Lekkos uses to address common deficiencies (22:00) One thing that everyone and anyone can (and should) do to optimize their health (24:30) What’s up with CBD? How do you know which products are good? (29:45) How do you diagnose adrenal fatigue? (32:40) How does Dr. Lekkos support clients with adrenal fatigue? How can we tell what products in our home are safe? What should you look for and where do you even begin? This episode is the beginning of a multi-part series on environmental toxins, and we’ll be helping you take baby steps to make your home a safer place for you and your family. From the Episode: Angela started learning about environmental toxins after a deep dive on practical minimalism. She knows learning about toxins can seem scary, but she focuses on education and empowerment instead of fear. Rome wasn’t built in a day, and neither is a clean/toxin-free space. We discuss baby steps you can take to start making changes in your home. Do your homework. Just because there is a slick website doesn’t mean it is unbiased and honest. Many “info sites” are funded by the same industry who is utilizing toxins in products, but we know the difference and we can clue you in on what to look for. Just because a label says "non-toxic" or "fragrance-free" doesn't mean it doesn't have harmful ingredients. There are plenty of ingredients that mask or hide toxins. Listen to learn about a few. Danielle Small explains what a non-toxic life is, and why it's so important. She goes deeper by talking about relationships, social media, being sealed into our homes in the winter, deciphering ingredients in personal care products and cleaners, and dealing with anxiety. Danielle has always had sensitive skin and figured out how to make her own nontoxic skin care products using essential oils. She then moved on to cleaning products, and is now a Certified Holistic Aromatherapist. She suggests trying the app "Think Dirty" and Rose talks about the "Healthy Living" App by the Environmental Working Group. Danielle also suggests checking out the website: www.stopthestomachflu.com to see some cool hydrogren peroxide experiments.
