Blockchain-powered wireless network Helium (HNT) and T-Mobile have partnered to launch Helium Mobile, a 5G wireless service for smartphones. It will use Helium's decentralized, crypto-powered 5G network as well as T-Mobile's network, and switch between the two as needed.Helium is also voting to migrate to Solana (SOL) blockchain in a new proposal published on August 30. The long-awaited Ethereum Merge – the landmark protocol upgrade for the world's second largest cryptocurrency – completed at approximately 07:45 British Standard Time. While it will take time to flesh out how the markets will react, so far The Merge seems successful. At the time of writing, ETH is changing hands at US$1,600, largely unchanged over the past 24 hours. In the lead up to The Merge, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin reassured traders that it should have no real effect on prices, so no news is absolutely good news in this instance. Now officially a proof-of-stake (PoS) blockchain, Ethereum is over 99% more energy efficient and is on the road to significantly increasing its scalability and network speed. As for Bitcoin, once again the US$20,000 price point has proved itself as a strong support line, with the bulls managing to stabilise the cryptocurrency after yesterday's rout. Without a strong catalyst, we should expect Bitcoin to trade fairly sideways for the rest of the week. The large-cap altcoins are seeing a bit of a lift post-Merge, with Solana and Cardano heading into the green and Polygon, Tron and Avalanche seeing incremental gains. Both Terras – that is Terra LUNA and Terra Classic (LUNC) – continue to spiral to the floor with heavy double-digital losses once again. Other poor performers today include Cosmos (ATOM) and Helium (HNT). Some negative price action in the decentralised finance (DeFi) market, with Lido, Synthetix and Curve all dipping. Celsius (CEL) is back at it having doubled its market cap in the past 24 hours. Bitcoin continues to outperform Ethereum in the crypto markets after weeks of the opposite, as investors pull out of long-ETH positions in the lead up to the landmark Ethererum Merge scheduled for this Thursday. BTC added a further 3% this morning and remains bullish at the time of writing with a US$22,400 price tag, while ETH saw a fractional decline to US$1,720. The crypto markets as a whole are at US$1.07 trillion after adding 1.2%, further encouraged by strong price action in the network token space. Solana (SOL) in particular outperformed – and indeed has been outperforming for a good week now – by adding double digits in the past 24 hours, bringing its market capitalisation up to US$13.5bn. Solana's strong performance is partially attributed to record NFT activity on the blockchain. Polygon and Avalanche also performed well in the blockchain space, while Cardano pulled back slightly. Both Terra LUNA tokens – community-supported LUNC and disgraced Terraform Labs founder Do Kwon's relaunched LUNA token – suffered heavy losses today of nearly 20% each. Also bearish this morning were Helium (HNT), Loopring (LRC) and decentralised exchanges Curve and PancakeSwap. Traders seem energised in the lead up to the Ethereum Merge which is due to happen this time next week. Bitcoin, however, has continued to trade sideways and has yet to reclaim the US$20,000 price point since going south four days ago. The cryptocurrency markets as a whole are trading at US$995bn as onlookers pay close attention to the one-trillion-dollar mark. Interestingly, Ethereum Classic (ETC) is one of today's top performers, having added over 26% to its market capitalisation. ETC is a carbon copy of Ethereum, and could be seen as a popular alternative for miners once Ethereum abandons mining post Merge. A number of Bitcoin alternatives – namely Bitcoin Gold and Ravencoin – also saw double-digit gains this morning, as did the smaller cap blockchain network Flux, which entered the top-100 coins table. Most large-cap blockchain networks added green candlesticks over the past 24 hours, with Cardano, Solana and Avalanche outperforming. You know that we really love when blockchains actually solve a real problem. Today, let's talk about Helium! What if, instead of using an expensive cellular plan to connect all of your devices to the internet, you could use a cheaper alternative provided by the community? That's the idea behind Helium, a network of everyday folks worldwide who plug Helium-compatible transmitters into their home or business internet. Whoever wants to use that community internet connection simply needs to have a Helium-compatible device and some Helium tokens, to pay for the data they use. The hotspot's host then gets those "HNT" tokens as a reward for transmitting that data. They can sell those on an exchange for cash, or apply them towards their own data usage. This also incentivizes hosts to put Hotspots where there is no coverage yet: Because if you are the first one in that location, all data goes through you, and you earn more. That's an example of how blockchains solve a real problem and create useful incentives. And while this will not replace your cell phone provider anytime soon, it is already used in devices like Lime scooters all over the world. And tomorrow we'll look into a similar project that wants to use blockchains to create an alternative to Google Maps.
