In this era of dramatic videos of smash and grab robberies going viral and drug stores locking up many of their shelves, retail theft is getting a lot of attention. Police departments are making fewer arrests and solving fewer property crimes. Are shoplifting and “smash and grabs” really on the rise, or are we just noticing them more? Either way there is a growing movement to crack down on thieves and reform sentencing laws. A proposed ballot initiative would roll back portions Prop. 47, a California law that reduced prison sentences for petty crimes including shoplifting. We'll examine the complicated relationship between retail theft, law enforcement and threat of punishment, and what it means for you. Guests: Charis Kubrin, professor, University of California, Irvine Department of Criminology, Law and Society Jeff Reisig, district attorney, Yolo County Marisa Lagos, politics correspondent, KQED; co-host of KQED's Political Breakdown show Rick Chavez Zbur, member, California State Assembly. In 2019, before the pandemic, 3.7% of children aged 5 to 17 were schooled primarily at home either by parents or through virtual classes, up from 2% in 1999, according to a survey by the National Center for Education Statistics, which attributes that increase in part to information technology making home instruction more feasible. The NCES doesn't have more recent data yet, but an analysis by the Washington Post found the number of homeschooled children has surged 51% since the 2017-18 school year. Meanwhile, private school enrollment rose just 7% while public school enrollment declined 4%. The big spurt in homeschooling came during the 2019-2020 and 2020-2021 school years, when virtual classes and mask mandates were widespread. Since then, as public schools have returned to (more or less) normal, homeschooling numbers have dropped some, but held on to much of their pandemic era gains. Notably, some of the students who fled public school for home during the pandemic are now enrolling in microschools.Emma Whitford, an education reporter for Forbes, joins ‘Forbes Talks' to discuss the factors contributing to the surge in homeschooling.Stay ConnectedForbes newsletters: https://newsletters.editorial.forbes.comForbes on Facebook: http://fb.com/forbesForbes Video on Twitter: http://www.twitter.com/forbesForbes Video on Instagram: http://instagram.com/forbesMore From Forbes: http://forbes.comForbes covers the intersection of entrepreneurship, wealth, technology, business and lifestyle with a focus on people and success.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Hi, I'm Taimi! (pronounced "tie-me") In my early 20's I was living as a complete perfectionist. Plagued by panic attacks, sleepless nights, severe constipation, and excessive exercise. I was a high-functioning anxious person who did not believe in rest, recovery, or relaxation while trying to prove that I was "good enough." Instead of spinning in my never-ending symptoms, I put all my energy into getting to the root cause to improve my mental and physical health. You no longer have to struggle with panic attacks, sleepless nights, the inability to poop, and just accepting sub-optimal health. We're continuing with the Mind Body Connection series today, specifically, healing without medication. Today, I'm chatting with Taimi, who asks the question, what's driving your anxiety? Having lived with almost crushing anxiety and depression, Taimi has sought after and found a way to heal hers and is compelled to help others identify and navigate theirs. Anxiety and depression were both debilitating for her. Taimi decided to use yoga as her modality for healing. Are you Constipated? Headaches? IBS? Cancer? Do you have to have your back against the wall and are in pain but are clueless as to why? Your body is trying to tell you something. Imagine how different, how much better your life could be if you began listening to the signals it's sending. _________________________________ Taimi Lawlor's Contact information: Website: http://www.astretchbeyondyoga.com/ FB https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100005122247162 _______________________________________ COMMENTS: yvonnetheauthor@gmail.com TO PURCHASE MY RESOURCES: subscribepage.io/YouAreDynamic amazon.com/Yvonne-Randle/e/B00D5SKEDW%3Fref=dbs_a_mng_rwt_scns_share --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/healthywealthywisedating/message
California and New York are facing a remarkable trend of population decline for the third consecutive year. This mass exodus is reshaping the demographic landscape and has profound implications for the political influence of both states. The ongoing migration reflects broader concerns about the cost of living, tax burdens, and quality of life, driving residents to seek greener pastures elsewhere. As these populous states confront the consequences of dwindling numbers, the effects ripple through political, economic, and social spheres, raising questions about future governance and policy directions. This situation highlights a critical juncture for California and New York, as they grapple with retaining their allure and addressing the underlying issues driving this significant outmigration. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/darien-dunstan3/message

No generation struggles with mental health more than Generation Z, those born between 1997 and 2012. Only 41% of Gen Z respondents said they're "thriving" in a Gallup and Walton Family Foundation poll released earlier this year and reported by CNN, but 60% of millennials surveyed said they were thriving when asked at the same age. When questioned about their mental health and well-being, only 20 in every 100 Gen Zers say it is excellent. Clinical psychologist Chloe Carmichael says Gen Zers' mental health issues likely stem from multiple factors, such as “false social standards that social media creates [and] the stifling of free speech."About the latter, Carmichael says that "as a clinical psychologist, I believe freedom of expression and being able to verbalize your thoughts is really good for your mental health.” The psychologist also points to “a decline in religiosity” among the young generation as a reason for growing depression and anxiety, as well as the extended period of social distancing and isolation during the COVID-19 pandemic. Carmichael joins this episode of “The Daily Signal Podcast” to explain the factors that led to today's mental health crisis and what can be done to address such underlying causes. And with Christmas around the corner, Carmichael also offers some tips and tricks for how we all can navigate family and challenging relational dynamics over the holidays. Enjoy the show! Geert Wilders has been described as the Dutch Donald Trump. Earlier this month his far-right Freedom Party pulled off a surprise election victory in the Netherlands. Following Mr Wilder's win, we're looking at what's driving right-wing populism in Europe. Italy has a right-wing populist prime minister. In Hungary there's Viktor Orban - prime minister since 2010 - with his particular brand of nationalist populism, and in Finland the far-right Finns party is now part of the governing coalition. Are some of the factors that secured Geert Wilders' win also what is helping other right-wing populists in Europe? In a European context, does right-wing populism differ from far-rights politics ? Why are parts of Europe drifting right? What are the factors behind this? What's driving right-wing populism in Europe and what does it mean for the continent?Shaun Ley is joined by:Catherine Fieschi, a comparative political analyst specialising in populism, far right and authoritarian politics and a Fellow at the Robert Schuman Centre at the European University Institute in Florence.
