1. High-intensity interval training (HIIT)Just a few minutes of high-intensity exercise with lots of rest can quickly deplete excess sugar in your blood. Try doing exercises such as burpees, plyometrics, or a spin bike.2. Apple cider vinegarApple cider vinegar contains acetic acid, which can slow down a blood sugar spike after consuming sugar. Combine one tablespoon of apple cider vinegar with 8 ounces of water and drink this after a high-carb meal. 3. Berberine, NAC, and other supplementsBerberine is considered a natural Metformin without the side effects. You can pair berberine with NAC or alpha lipoic acid for more natural blood sugar support. Excess carbs deplete vitamin B1, so if you have a cheat meal or fall off the wagon with carbohydrates, increase vitamin B1.4. Post-meal walkA 25 to 30-minute post-meal walk can help burn off excess sugar so that it is not converted into cholesterol or stored as fat. 5. Potassium and magnesiumPotassium is necessary for glucose storage in the liver and the muscles. It also helps move glucose into your cells. Magnesium is critical for the cells that produce insulin. Nearly every diabetic is deficient in magnesium!6. Ketone supplements Providing the brain with ketones supports healthy blood sugar in the brain, which can improve cognitive function and decrease brain fog. 7. Saltwater Sodium helps prevent stress-induced blood sugar spikes. Adding more salt to your last meal or adding it to a glass of water can improve sleep and calm your mood.Dry fasting can lower blood sugar faster than anything else! Dry fasting means you're not drinking water or eating food. When you're dry fasting, your body increases the hormone glucagon, which helps to lower blood sugar. Growth hormone and antioxidants also increase, and your body quickly switches to fat-burning.Dr. Eric Berg DC Bio:Dr. Berg, age 60, is a chiropractor who specializes in Healthy Ketosis & Intermittent Fasting. In this Huberman Lab Essentials episode, I explore how the nervous system impacts fat loss and how certain behaviors and supplements can accelerate fat burning. I explain how non-exercise movements like fidgeting and shivering trigger adrenaline to boost fat metabolism. I also examine the impact of exercise intensity and fasted workouts on fat burning, and how supplements such as caffeine, GLP-1 and berberine can further support fat loss. These science-based tools go beyond traditional calorie counting to enhance metabolism and improve body composition. Welcome back to our weekend Cabral HouseCall shows! This is where we answer our community's wellness, weight loss, and anti-aging questions to help people get back on track! Check out today's questions: Anonymous: Hello Dr. Cabral, Thank you so much for the invaluable insights you provide — I truly appreciate it! I have two unrelated questions: 1. Do you have any thoughts or ideas on the potential causes of snoring? My husband isn't overweight, so I'm thinking it may be related to positional factors or anatomy. He doesn't experience apnea, but the snoring does disrupt his sleep. 2. I have a product from a functional medicine supplement company containing 350mg of linolenic acid and 1400mg of linoleic acid, both derived from high-quality, cold-pressed oils. If someone has an imbalanced omega-3:omega-6 ratio, with a higher omega-6 …it seems like this product would not help balance the ratio on its own and additional omega-3 supplementation be necessary, is that correct? Thanks again for your time Sharon: Hello. I have been listening to various topics on your podcasts. I was curious about the citricidal drops. You have mentioned you can use two drops with a neti pot and use that for a nasal rinse. How often is it ok to do this? I also see it used as a urinary tract protocol and as part of the CBO protocol. But then in one podcast, you said you shouldn't use the drops longer than 3 weeks. I'm not sure how long you use it for the urinary tract protocol (didn't see that on website), but can you use it for that and the CBO if you do those protocols back to back? How long should you wait between uses of the drops? Is urinary tract protocol only for a UTI or is it also a general urinary health protocol? Thank you. (I asked about neti pot on FB but seems like no one has used it for nasal rinsing.) Terri: I have read a couple of studies about Berberine being contraindicated for those with Hashimoto's/hypothyroidism because it can interfere with absorption of thyroid hormone. There seem to be so many other benefits that I thought I'd come to you, the expert, the king and master of all things health, to answer my question…would you discourage someone with subclinical hypothyroidism and not taking any thyroid hormone from taking Berberine? Thank you for taking my question and for being so willing to help out the community with your wealth of knowledge. You truly are a blessing to so many! Brooke: I've been doing coffee enemas for 2+ years now, once as often as 2-3 times and week and now 1-2 times a month. I used to have a much easier time holding the coffee, easily holding 10-15 minutes. I usually do two back to back rounds 10-15 minutes each (1-2cups each time). Lately I can't hold more than a few minutes, especially the first round. Also, I find that the day after a coffee enema I struggle to have a natural bowel movement. I'd say about 50% of the time I dont have a bowel movement the next day, is that okay? Bryna: Hi Dr. Cabral. About a year ago I came close to scheduling an appointment with your office and hope to do so again. Lately, I've been binge listening to your podcast making a list of questions and decided to send a message. What do you consider to be the healthiest frozen “treat”? I have reflux & gut issues and am always looking for ways to cool things down. After comparing ice cream / sorbet / gelato I concluded frozen yogurt was prob. the healthiest. Do you agree? Do you think frozen yogurt is a healthy snack in GEN? Could not find this topic when I searched the archives. Could ask a dozen more Q's but just want to say I found your podcast back in ‘17 and have been listening off and on ever since. I value your opinion and insight more than my PCP and appreciate any insight. In today's episode, we are happy to hear from our clinic's Dr. Scott and one of his patients, Keith about his successful experience tackling gut health issues. Keith's case posed a very common conundrum that we've seen in many with gut health issues - are we dealing with bacterial overgrowth (SIBO), fungal overgrowth (candida) or potentially both? We'll walk through some of the key indications that Keith's initial SIBO diagnosis was actually a candida case, and we'll cover the best testing and treatments that led to Keith's recovery. Thank you for joining us for our 2nd Cabral HouseCall of the weekend! I'm looking forward to sharing with you some of our community's questions that have come in over the past few weeks… Andrea: Hi Dr. Cabral - I'd love your input on what steps when trying to conceive to have the healthiest pregnancy possible. I love your book, and I'm doing many of the practices in it (epsom baths, IR sauna, taking the greens and daily nutritional support, exercise, etc.). I have done some nutrient testing through a nutritionist, so I'm taking extra vitamin D, B12, and iron. Also, I'm doing the 7-day detox now so that I can do it before trying next month. What is your advice on what I should (and shouldn't) be doing pre-pregnancy, and if there are any other tests you'd recommend (like testing for the Congenital cytomegalovirus infection/CMV)?Thank you for consistently presenting content in a rational, unbiased, and non-fear-mongering way! Cara: My family does not eat a healthy diet, I know this, but its so hard to change. It's incredibly overwhelming. I have 2 young children and I would like to provide better meals for them but I just get overwhelmed with all the messaging and what to feed them and what not to feed them that I just sink back to what I know and what I know they will eat. Help! where do I start to make changes Sally: Hi Dr Cabral. Thank you so much for your willingness to help others! I am writing to you in regard of my dad. He is a 60 year old mechanic who has never really taken care of his body. About 4 years ago he was diagnosed with cancer and since has had treatment to essentially kill it. He has been cancer free since. Over the past few months he has been feeling chest tightness and arm pain, which landed him in the ER to get 3 stents put in his main left artery. He is healing and starting to slowly get back to work. I think this was a scare for him and he is going to start taking his eating habits seriously. Anyways, he has been saying for years now that drinking water gives him heartburn. I assume this is all connected back to his diet but wanted to get your thoughts if there is something specific we can look into further. We just ordered him the inflammation test from your site as a starting place. Thanks as always. Sally. Anonymous: Hi Dr Cabral, I am a 63 year old female, eat a Mediterranean diet, do the big 5 annually, sauna daily and cold plunge 2-3 times per week. My exercise regimen includes, resistance, HITT and SIT 4-5 times per week. My question is, am I trying too hard? I often feel a wired when I should be tired and alternately run down for no apparent reason. My HRV can be as high as 65 when I'm detoxing and 20-30 when I'm living my normal life. I take a multitude of supplements, based on my IHP's recommendations (ie; all of the basics plus adrenal soothe, adrenal support, estrogen support, DHEA) , as well as several of the supplements you recommend, (ie; Berberine, functional mushrooms, metavolve.). Plus, I take 5 CBD gummies 3 x per day to control anxiety and NAC for mthfr gene. Please advise Carrie: Hi Dr. Cabral! I have heard there's some controversy around nano hydroxyapatite, specifically that it can lead to liver and kidney issues, is carcinogenic, etc. This is a great ingredient to build teeth and reduce cavities, but I don't want to give it to my child if it's toxic and builds up in the system. What has your research on this ingredient shown, and are there any safe brands such as Primal Life Organics. If not, what is an alternative. Thank you! An episode from The Holistic Navigator. This is not to diagnosis or treat any disease/illness. Consult your physician before taking supplements or medications OR before you stop taking medications. This is for entertainment/informational purposes only! This is a difficult question to answer. So much of it depends on the individual's needs and our health is far too complex to be remedied or maintained with a single nutrient. We usually point people to our CORE 4 Supplements (multivitamin, omega-3, probiotic, greens powder), but if you're looking for one supplement that has widespread benefits that nearly everyone can benefit from, it's hard not to throw berberine in the mix as well. Berberine is a compound that can be extracted from many plants, including those of the Berberis genus. It's an alkaloid compound, which is a naturally occurring nitrogen compound that's most commonly found in the plant kingdom. It should also be noted that berberine has a history extending back to ancient medicine, but modern studies have confirmed again and again how effective this compound is in restoring optimal health. Meet Carrie: Carrie is a national educator for Natural Factors and licensed herbalist and is excited to share with you how berberine and another nutrient called PEA can benefit your life. Berberine is widely recognized for it's ability to optimize blood sugar levels, even to the extent of competing with current pharmaceuticals, but it's other extensive benefits make it one supplement that should be a part of everyone's supplement regimen. Takeaways: Berberine does just as good a job as metformin and has less price to it and has far less risk and side effects as far as blood sugar. (8:00) Insulin resistance can be devastating our health. (12:00) Your body creates PEA on its own, so supplementing will further enhance its benefits, specifically on the endocannabinoid system. (23:02) PEA can be an incredibly powerful tool for those that have neuropathy. (25:58)
Discover the science behind berberine's effectiveness, from being a potent mitochondrial uncoupler to its amazing role in metabolism. Beyond just weight loss, berberine foods and supplements can boost your overall well-being, tapping into polyphenols, mitochondrial uncouplers, and so much more.

In this episode, Shawn Tassone, MD, PhD, and registered dietitian, Temple Stewart, explore metabolic optimization through nutritional intervention, with particular emphasis on Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS). Stewart shares her evidence-based approach to PCOS management through ketogenic nutrition, which led to her own health transformation. The discussion examines the clinical applications of dihydroberberine compared to metformin, including its role in insulin sensitization and glucose regulation. Key supplements discussed include creatine for muscle protein synthesis and cognitive function, omega-3 fatty acids for inflammation modulation, and methylene blue for mitochondrial function. A significant portion focuses on supplement quality and bioavailability, emphasizing the importance of third-party testing and proper formulation. The conversation concludes with emerging research on nicotine's potential therapeutic applications and the integration of stress management techniques in treating metabolic disorders. This evidence-based discussion bridges the gap between conventional medical management and nutritional interventions as they highlight practical steps women can take to improve their health and fertility, offer practical strategies for clinicians treating women with metabolic disorders, and emphasize the importance of holistic approaches to health. Thank you for joining us for our 2nd Cabral HouseCall of the weekend! I'm looking forward to sharing with you some of our community's questions that have come in over the past few weeks… Jenny: Hi Dr. Cabral, First, thank you to you and your amazing team for selflessly giving of your time and knowledge so we can all learn and grow on our health journeys. We can't really express this enough. I have a question about your Alkalizing Vitamin C product. You've recommended this as something to take in water upon waking, but could it also be effective when I add it to my morning smoothie or is it better to take separately? I don't enjoy the taste on its own, so I'm unlikely to drink it just in water. Any suggestions? Thanks! Kavita: Hello Dr. Cabral, First, I want to thank you for your amazing work! I listen to your podcast every day, which means I've been consistently listening for the past 3,231 days! :) I have an important question for you. I recently started taking Berberine, but a friend mentioned that it may have adverse reactions. She told me about her neighbor, who had to stop taking it because doctors wouldn't perform surgery on her while she was using Berberine. I'm unsure of the exact details, but it raised some concerns. I started taking Berberine because there's diabetes in my family, and I'm hoping to avoid getting on any medications as I move ahead in life. How do I make sure it is working for me? I hope this gets on your list soon :) Thank you, Kavita ( Pronounced - ka-vee-tha) Jenni: Hi, I've been battling Meibomian Gland Disorder for over a year. The only thing that has provided relief has been taking 50mg daily of doxycycline. I've been on this dosage for 10 months. My doctor has tried weaning me off, but the symptoms pop back up after 4-5 days. Nobody seems to understand why this issue arose suddenly, and no one can offer me help outside of antibiotics. Do you have any experience in helping patients with MGD? Could this be due to heavy metals, gut issues, systemic inflammation? I'm desperate for natural relief. Thank you, Jenni Michael: Hi Dr. Cabral. Thank you for the work you do and especially taking time to answer people's questions. My question is regarding to home oil as the main heating source. What are your thoughts on the cleanest and safest option? We currently have the standard heating oil. There is an option to change the oil to a B50 blend which consists of a 50/50 blend of standard heating oil and biodiesel. This would then convert to a B99 fuel which is 99% biodiesel. Any thoughts on this subject or know of a place I can go to research more? Thank you! Paedyn: Hi Dr Cabral, but of a hard to question. What are some ways I can naturally treat MALS (median arcuate ligament syndrome). I woke up randomly with stomach pain in my epigastric region one day out of nowhere and Dr's are saying it's this and that the only treatment option is very major surgery which only a select handful of surgeons perform this surgery worldwide and a lot of people end up worse off after the surgery. I just want to heal my body naturally. Thank you so much! Thank you for joining us for our 2nd Cabral HouseCall of the weekend! I'm looking forward to sharing with you some of our community's questions that have come in over the past few weeks… Valerie: Hi Doctor Cabral, I have a quick question I hope you can help with. I often make 32oz smoothie bowls and usually eat half. But sometimes I eat the whole thing, and I end up with upper stomach pain and a feeling like the smoothie is coming back up for the rest of the day. It goes away after a few hours, but my stomach feels stretched and sensitive for a few days afterward. This only happens when I eat large amounts of smoothie, not with other foods, so I think it's the quantity. Do you think something else could be going on? Thanks so much for your answer! Angie: Hi Dr. Cabral,Thanks for your love for research in the health field. My husband was diagnosed with diabetes and wanting to help him naturally, I told him I would try out berberine and see if it gave me any reactions before he took it for diabetes. When I started taking it I noticed that I could tolerate more foods, like beans and other things that typically gave me a histamine reaction. It seemed to calm down my system. I would like to continue taking it so I can eat more foods without reactions, but I am hearing from the natural health community that it can kill off bifidobacteria. I only take one 500mg at lunch and one 500mg at dinner. My questions are 1. What does Berberine do that it allows me to eat more foods and 2. Is there any reputable research on long term use of Berberine? Lenny: Thank you so much for all your hard work and for taking the time to answer our questions. I'm a big fan of post-workout smoothies, and my go-to recipe includes banana, spinach, broccoli, blueberries, avocado, dates, protein powder, cacao, chia and linseeds, creatine, ashwagandha, stevia, coconut, and cacao nibs. I do feel a bit bloated afterward, but it's the best way for me to get all these healthy ingredients in. What are your thoughts on this smoothie combination? If it's not optimal, do you have any suggestions for improvements? Thanks again for your help! Christine: What Omega 3 gel caps do you recommend? Gine: Hi Dr. Cabral - I am seeking guidance on how to manage my husbands dx of a biscupid aortic valve with anyeurism of ascending aorta. Both his parents of this but no anyeurism at 65. My husband is 41 and we found out 2 years ago his anyeurism was 4.8cm, then last year went down to 4.5cm, now this month back to 4.8cm. If this is accurate with the rate of growth they will inevitably rec. surgery which of course we want to avoid. Is there anything you'd recommend that could possibly reduce the size of anyeurism, prevent further growth and avoid surgery? I have him on DNS, omegas, vit D, berberine+, mag & probiotic. My son was born with the bicuspid as well and I want to make sure I do everything in my power to set him up for success and hopefully avoid ever having an anyeurism. TYSM!
