Neil Gaiman's complete reinvention of DC's trademark on The Sandman is inarguably one of the most influential comics of the Iron Age…so why haven't we talked about it much yet? And why are we starting with the storyline that's popularly considered “Volume 2” of the series? We're focusing on the collection that introduced The Sandman to the bookshelf market (which originally included the landmark “The Sound of Her Wings” story) and marked an evolution in the comic from a horror reimagining in the vein of Alan Moore's Swamp Thing to a showcase for Gaiman's brand of dark fantasy and his love of the world of stories. We'll also touch on how the series introduced character types not seen in other comics of the time, whether it matters or not that a big part of the story hinges on plotlines from Roy Thomas' Infinity Inc., and how The Sandman went on to give birth to the Vertigo imprint.

Original broadcast date October 20, 2022. The original podcast post is here: Ten years ago we loved it every time Cecil on Welcome to Night Vale ranted about how much he hated his stupid brother-in-law STEVE CARLSBERG. If you'd told us back then that, come 2022, we'd be 100% on Steve's side, we'd have told you that's about as likely as Hollywood greenlighting a Sandman series. Funny thing… Listen in as we spoil everything about Welcome to Night Vale episode 216 (also known as “Steve Carlsberg Is The Best Coach Ever”) and then spoil everything about The Sandman “The Sound of Her Wings” (both the episode and the comic book) and Hob Gadling's friendship with Morpheus, which will never stop being awesome. Of course there's also random tangents into the latest Scholomance book, the Aliens series, horror movie picks, and how so many things we love got started over thirty freaking years ago: this is Binary System Podcast WE OLD. This week's outro is a clip from Kaleidoscope Light by Policy. If you want more info on Tamsyn Muir's Locked Tomb series, Kathryn's reviewed both Gideon the Ninth and Harrow the Ninth. We discuss one of the best adaptations on TV so far with The Sandman Chapter 6 "The Sound of Her Wings" in our spoiler filled podcast. Two beautiful executed episodes with a brilliant cast. We could watch this one forever. The Sandman Chapter 6 "The Sound of Her Wings" Details Episode Directed by Mairzee Almas Teleplay for this episode written by Lauren Bello Staff Writers Catherine Smyth-McMullen and Vanessa Benton After recovering his helm, pouch of sand and ruby, Morpheus feels aimless and unmotivated like there is something missing from his duties. But his big sister, Death, comes to meet him and asks her brother to accompany her as she escorts the deceased to the afterlife. She explains that there was a time in her history that she too felt that she was just going through the motions as the inevitable end for everyone. As she goes about her work she shows Morpheus the possibility of finding purpose and fulfilment in his duties as ruler of the Dreaming, as she has since realised that she is the last connection that all beings have before they leave the world. All they crave is a friendly smile and a kind ear.Morpheus is reminded of a bet he once made with his sister after overhearing a young man called Hob Gadling declare that he will never die as he believes that life only ends when you give up. In the White Horse Tavern in the year 1389 Death agrees to spare Gadling and grant him his wish for as long as he wants with the agreement that he will meet dream at the same spot every 100 years and tell him of his experiences. Each time they meet, Hob Gadling describes his life and maintains that no matter the turns his life takes, he still does not wish for death. Through the wonderful or awful centuries or whether his mysterious meetings with Dream are being investigated by Johanna Constantine, Hob reiterates that his life is his life and he never wants it to end.In 1889 their conversation leads to Hob hypothesizing that Morpheus continues to meet with him because he is lonely and needs a friend, which greatly offends Morpheus. As the next century passes, Morpheus fails to show for their next meeting due to his capture by Burgess. When their age-old drinking hole is sold, Hob chooses a new tavern a block away, hoping that Morpheus will choose to find him.In the present, with his Sister's words of encouragement in his ears and craving connection again Morpheus seeks out Hob Gadling who joyfully greets his Endless drinking companion as the two friends catch up on missed time. We discuss The Sandman Chapter 5 "24/7" in our spoiler filled podcast. This is a tough episode of the show as John Dee tries to fulfil her fantasies. The Sandman Chapter 5 "24/7" Details Episode Directed by Jamie Childs Teleplay for this episode written by Ameni Rozsa Staff Writers Catherine Smyth-McMullen and Vanessa Benton With Dream's ruby in hand and Morpheus caught off guard and unconscious, John Dee stops off at a diner to watch the people around him, encountering the polite employees and hungry patrons. But all is not what it seems, as John settles into his booth and his hot black coffee, he uses the ruby to remove any lies from the group and put his theory about truth and lies to a terrifying test. John Dee begins with server Bette and removes her kind demeanor towards her customers, he then turns his attention and that of the Ruby towards power couple, husband and wife Garry and Kate, to just be honest with each other as they squabble over spinach salad and double decker burgers. As Bette's love interest, Marsh, is also exposed to the scrutiny of John's Ruby as he forces a matter-of-fact confession that the only reason he comes to her home is not to be with her but to be with her 21 year old son Bernard. As John turns his vision of absolute truth on to Judy who has recently broken up with her girlfriend, and on Mark, a hopeful employee of Vanguard Pharmaceuticals, the unconnected group spirals out of control with one another. Judy kisses Bette as Kate gets down with hopefully employee Mark and her husband Garry hooks up with Marsh. As John Dee takes pride in the honesty he has brought to the diner, he has also brought about jealousy and anger overtakes these innocent people when Mark accidentally murders Garry, driving them to murder each other or take their own lives. The Lord of Dreams arrives too late but tries to explain to John that what he thinks are lies are another form of dreams and hopes. But John refuses to listen to him and Morpheus transports him to his Realm to retrieve the Ruby, but where John has other plans as he uses the ruby's power to defeat Morpheus. Crushing the ruby in his hand, John exults in his victory, before Morpheus reveals himself and tells him that by destroying the ruby, its power was released and reforged back into its true master, Morpheus. Taking pity on John, Morpheus returns him to the institution, seemingly in a state of long-term sleep. With the wider world also recovering from John's intervention, Morpheus's sibling Desire plots against him. No, this isn't a dream (or even a nightmare): The Sandman, the iconic Vertigo comic book series created by Neil Gaiman, Sam Keith, and Mike Dringenberg, has finally been adapted for television. Paul, Arlo, and The Deli Counter of Justice co-creator Eric Sipple are all huge fans of the comics, and they use their familiarity with the Dreaming to dive deep into the first season of the Netflix TV show. The gang discusses the show's mostly spot-on casting, whether it captures Morpheus as well as Roderick Burgess did, how the filmmakers modernize some of the books' more outdated elements, and so very much more. Plus, a mini-review of Prey, the new Predator film directed by Dan Trachtenberg and starring Amber Midthunder. La serie es una rica combinación de mitología moderna y antigua en la que la ficción contemporánea, el drama histórico y la leyenda se entrelazan a la perfección.
Our guest this week, Emily R. King, is a reader of everything and a writer of fantasy. Her Wings of Fury novel grabbed me so hard I was almost late for the broadcast. So we had a great time talking about that world where Emily extrapolates what life must have been like for the humans when the Titans ruled before the Olympian gods took control. She tells us all about her fascination with sharks which led to her new shark thriller currently in the drafting stage. Emily's answers for her favorite food and place she wants to live sparked fun little tangents. To learn more about Emily, follow her on Twitter or Instagram @Emily_R_King or check out her website at http://emilyrking.com.
On OCD’s 7th day of 31 days of horror, Tess is joined by Mhari Goldstein from Comics, Culture, Cosplay podcast to talk Neil Gaiman’s 1989 “The Sandman!”New York Times bestselling author Neil Gaiman's transcendent series Sandman is often hailed as the definitive Vertigo title and one of the finest achievements in graphic storytelling. Gaiman created an unforgettable tale of the forces that exist beyond life and death by weaving ancient mythology, folklore and fairy tales with his own distinct narrative vision. In Preludes & Nocturnes, an occultist attempting to capture Death to bargain for eternal life traps her younger brother Dream instead. After his seventy-year imprisonment and eventual escape, Dream, also known as Morpheus, goes on a quest for his lost objects of power. On his arduous journey Morpheus encounters Lucifer, John Constantine, and an all-powerful madman. This book also includes the story "The Sound of Her Wings," which introduces us to the pragmatic and perky goth girl, Death.Follow Mhari’s podcast Comics, Culture, Cosplay on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter! Elseworlds was this year's CW crossover. But this year we saw a new character introduced, Batwoman. Flash, Green Arrow and Supergirl make their way to Gotham City investigating John Deegan. Batwoman is not happy to have them in her city. Due to the epic nature of the crossover, the GSM shows did a mega podcast roundtable. Elseworlds: At the end of night one of the crossover, we found out that Dr. John Deegan was given the book by the Monitor and was in Gotham City. After detouring though Star City, Ollie-Flash, Barry-Arrow and Supergirl head over to Gotham. They run into some muggers and are taken into custody by the GCPD. They are sprung and taken to Wayne Tower. There they are greeted by Kate Kane. She has taken over the tower and offers to let them use it. They learn from her that Deegan is over Arkham and head over there for answers. Cisco, Kaitlin, and Diggle show up filling them in on the appearance of Earth 90's Flash and the message. Kara & Kaitlin distract the staff. Barry & Oliver confront Deegan, who frees the inmates and escapes. In a battle with an inmate Scarecrow's fear toxin is spilt and Arrow & Flash battle each other thinking they are battling Merlin & Thawne. Batwoman comes to save the day. In Arkham we had shout outs to Mister Freeze, Scarecrow, Penguin, Poison Ivy, Clayface, Riddler, Psycho-Pirate and the Luke Fox a.k.a. Batwing. Elseworlds - Batwoman Saves The Day: Elseworlds saw the formal introduction of Batwoman and the city of Gotham into the CW Flarrowverse. It seems that Bruce/Batman left Gotham 3 years ago and it fell to pieces. Wayne Enterprises fell and so did the city. They seem to be canonizing that this is the Nolan Batman's Gotham. But Bruce's cousin Kate Kane is on the job as Batwoman. It seems even she doesn't know where Batman went. But she is there to protect her city. All the drama that our heroes are bringing is making things worse. She just wants them out of the city. However she and Supergirl are World's Finest in her eyes. They both know each other's secret identities. Our heroes may have left Gotham, but we have not seen the last of Batwoman. Summary: Elseworlds was a fun crossover that checked so many boxes for the fans. Part 1 gave us Smallville shout outs and a battle with Amazo (seen in many of the animated series). Part 2 gave us the canonization of 90's Flash, a Green Lantern Diggle, and Batwoman. Part 3 was an alt-Superman vs Superman battle with Arrow making a bargain with the Monitor. We all felt part 3 was the weakest and Supergirl's show got hijacked. But the setup for next year's Crisis on Infinite Earths has us pumped. It was also a blast to do a crossover podcast with Arrow Squad, Central City Underground and Maid of Steel. With 7 podcasters and a ton of listener feedback it was a fun, but late night. We hope you enjoy the podcast! Cougar's Comic Corner: Karen and several of us talked about characters and plot points in Elseworlds that are teeing us off for Crisis. It is a good time to pick up this volume and get a sneak peak of what we may be in store for next fall. Let go of that seriousness. There is nobody who is actually able to always stay in a place of allowing or a place of zero resistance, or as the wonderful teachers Abraham-Hicks say in their most recent book, 'the swirling vortex'. It'll be really naive to assume that anyone will be able to stay in the vortex forever. It is impossible. And the earlier you accept it, the better. We should understand that resisting resistance is absolutely futile. So let go of the resistance when you can and when you cannot, let go of that frustration about not being able to let go of it. This talk will help you make peace with resistance and the dual nature of this universe. Note: This is the live recording of a talk which was delivered by Pramod in India.
