Dracula permeates everything. Before we're five years old, we know his story. It's baked into the cultural imagination. However, if you were to hold that story up to the light, you'd immediately notice a lot of holes. In Bram Stoker's iconic work, Dracula appears less frequently than you would think, and his backstory is referenced in short bursts and shrouded in mystery. His tale is perfect fodder for artists Kelley Jones and Matt Wagner to sink their teeth into. Last year, they published Dracula - Book One: The Impaler through Orlok Press via Kickstarter. The hardcover has spent months in the hands of readers (ours included), and its trade paperback release from Dark Horse Comics is set for October 22nd. With the first chapter complete, exploring Dracula's pre-vampire days, set primarily during his time at the Scholomance, aka his unpaid internship with the devil, Jones and Wagner are ready to unleash volume two, Dracula: The Brides. Their latest entry covers centuries, focusing on how Dracula came into contact with the iconic trio, who get pages in Stoker's book but have seared their way into every adaptation. Who are they? What do they mean to Dracula? What happened to the fourth Bride? Dracula: The Brides will take Kelley Jones and Matt Wagner right up until the moment Bram Stoker's novel begins. This means their next chapter dissects the classic and exposes what the Impaler was up to when the other characters were not paying attention. We happily dig into Dracula with Kelley Jones and Matt Wagner on the podcast. We discuss the title character's relationship with romance, women, and blood. We uncover Jones and Wagner's compulsion to tell this story and why comics were always the best fit for it. Dracula: The Brides has fifteen days left on its Kickstarter campaign. Mysterious Galaxy's annual summer bingo is in full swing and we are (still) getting ready to throwdown!!  This week to complement the accounting of Smack's reads last month, Gabi details some of her recent reads that will be feeding into our annual Throwdown next month.  We begin by spending way too much time talking about a book of murder-themed logic puzzles - proving that Smack absolutely kills (haha) at birthday gifts - then discuss some incredible worldbuilding in an excellent anti-empire werewolf fantasy novel and a couple of novellas featuring sapphic Sherlock Holmesian stories on Jupiter.  After a quick lesson on tardigrades and bemoaning her attempt to dip another toe back into the world of Sarah J. Maas, Gabi finishes by celebrating her first impressions of the Scholomance series, which has set the bar high for the rest of the trilogy, so we'll see how that goes... Books discussed this episode include: Murdle Vol. 1 by G.T. Karber The Silvered by Tanya Huff Mossa & Pleiti series by Malka Ann Older The Three Little Tardigrades by Sandra Fay The Assassin's Blade by Sarah J. Maas The Scholomance by Naomi Novik

Lingthusiasm - A podcast that's enthusiastic about linguistics

The magical kind of spell and the written kind of spell are historically linked. This reflects how saying a word can change the state of the world, both in terms of fictional magic spells that set things on fire or make them invisible, and in terms of the real-world linguistic concept of performative utterances, which let us agree to contracts, place bets, establish names, and otherwise alter the fabric of our relationships. In this episode, your hosts Gretchen McCulloch and Lauren Gawne get enthusiastic about word magic! We talk about how the word magic systems are set up differently in three recent fantasy books we like: Babel by R.F. Kuang, Carry On by Rainbow Rowell, and the Scholomance series by Naomi Novik. We also talk about linguistic performatives: why saying “I do” in a movie doesn't make you married, aka Felicity Conditions, aka an excellent drag name; performativity as applied to gender (yup, Judith Butler got it from linguistics); the “hereby” test; and how technology changes what counts as a performative. Transcript available soon. Announcements: People often ask us to recommend interesting books about linguistics that don't assume prior knowledge of linguistics, so we've come up with a list of 12 books that we personally recommend, including both nonfiction and fiction books with linguistically interesting elements! Original broadcast date December 1, 2022. The original podcast post is here: https://pixelatedgeek.com/?p=184117 This week's Night Vale recap has a lot of fan art requests and T-shirt moments, but it's also us just being flat out amazed that Cecil can get interrupted by his kid every five minutes and it's always stress free. It's not saccharine, it's not annoying, it's not even a little frustrating; Cecil Baldwin just nails the right tone every single time. (But seriously, if the fan artists could do something with those awful children's books Cecil's reading to Esteban, that'd be swell.) After the recap we touched on the first few episodes of Wednesday (spooky and kooky, as expected), went over the "Playing House" episode of Sandman (Morpheus is quickly becoming a big ol jerk) and wrapped up with a spoiler-free discussion of the final book in the Scholomance trilogy; look out for a spoiler-full discussion soon because we're going to have to TALK SOME MORE ABOUT ALL THAT BY GOD. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Who's at fault for FTX's wrongdoing, published by EliezerYudkowsky on November 16, 2022 on The Effective Altruism Forum. Caroline Ellison, co-CEO and later CEO of Alameda, had a now-deleted blog, "worldoptimization" on Tumblr. One does not usually post excerpts from deleted blogs - the Internet has, of course, saved it by now - but it looks like Caroline violated enough deontology to be less protected than usual in turn, and also I think it's important for people to see what signals are apparently not reliable signs of honesty and goodness. In a post on Oct 10 2022, Caroline Ellison crossposted her Goodreads review of The Golden Enclaves, book 3 of Scholomance by Naomi Novik. Caroline Ellison writes, including very light / abstract spoilers only: A pretty good conclusion to the series.Biggest pro was the resolution of mysteries/open questions from the first two books. It wrapped everything up in a way that felt very satisfying.Biggest con was . I think I felt less bought into the ethics of the story than I had for the previous two books? The first two books often have a vibe of “you can either do the thing that's easy and safe or you can do the thing that's hard and scary but right, and being a good person is doing the right thing.” And I'm super on board with that.Whereas if I had to sum up the moral message of the third book I might go with “there is no ethical consumption under late capitalism.” For someone like myself, this is a pretty shocking thing to hear somebody say, on a Tumblr blog not then associated with their main corporate persona, not in a way that sounds like the usual performativity, not like it's meant to impress anybody (because then you're probably not writing about anything as undignified as fantasy fiction in the first place). It sounds like - Caroline might have been under the impression, as late as Oct 10, that what she was doing at FTX was the thing that's hard and scary but right? That she was doing, even, what Naomi Novik would have told her to do? The Scholomance novels feature a protagonist, Galadriel Higgins, with unusually dark and scary powers, with a dark and scary prophecy about herself, trying to do the right thing anyways and being misinterpreted by her classmates, in an incredibly hostile environment. The line of causality seems clear - Naomi Novik, by telling her readers to do the right thing, probably contributed to Caroline Ellison doing what she thought was the right thing - misusing Alameda's customer deposits. Furthermore, the Scholomance novels romanticized people with dark and scary powers, and those people not just immediately killing themselves in the face of a prophecy that they'd do immense harm later, i.e., sending the message that it's okay for them to take huge risks with other people's interests. I expect this to be a very serious blow to Naomi Novik's reputation, possibly the reputation of fantasy fiction in general. The now-deleted Tumblr post is tantamount to a declaration that Caroline Ellison was doing this because she thought Naomi Novik told her to. We can infer that probably at least $30 of Scholomance sales are due to Caroline Ellison, and with the resources that Ellison commanded as co-CEO of Alameda, some unknown other fraction of Scholomance's entire revenues could have been due to phantom purchases that Ellison funded in order to channel customer deposits to her favorite author. My moral here? It can also be summed up in an old joke that goes as follows: "He has no right to make himself that small; he is not that great." The best summary of the FTX affair that I've read so is Milky Eggs's "What Happened at Alameda Research?" If you haven't read it already, and you're at all interested in this affair, I recommend that you go read it right now. Pieced together from various sources, including some alleged...
