Welcome back to Waiting on the Trade: The Dream Journal, a miniseries in which we're discussing Neil Gaiman and co.'s original run on The Sandman. In this episode, we've each brought a discussion question prompted by our read of Volume Zero: Overture.
OK, let's get it out of the way early: J.H. Williams III is an amazing artist with an equally amazing name. From his early work on Deathwish, Shade, and Chase, you might get an inkling that there's something special going on. But then, after two Elseworlds projects (Justice Riders and Son of Superman), J.H. blew our minds with a 32 issue run on Promethea with Alan Moore. Changing sizes, media, colors, formats, it was a defining statement of what a comic book could look like. More groundbreaking projects followed, including a run on Detective Comics focused on Batwoman that won a GLAAD Media Award, and Sandman: Overture, another magnum opus. He's now working on Echolands, an original story told in a widescreen format. You can follow J.H. on Twitter and Instagram @JHWilliamsIII.______________________________Check out a video version of this episode on our YouTube channel: youtube.com/dollarbinbandits.If you liked this podcast, please rate, review, and subscribe on Apple Podcasts. No, this isn't a dream (or even a nightmare): The Sandman, the iconic Vertigo comic book series created by Neil Gaiman, Sam Keith, and Mike Dringenberg, has finally been adapted for television. Paul, Arlo, and The Deli Counter of Justice co-creator Eric Sipple are all huge fans of the comics, and they use their familiarity with the Dreaming to dive deep into the first season of the Netflix TV show. The gang discusses the show's mostly spot-on casting, whether it captures Morpheus as well as Roderick Burgess did, how the filmmakers modernize some of the books' more outdated elements, and so very much more. Plus, a mini-review of Prey, the new Predator film directed by Dan Trachtenberg and starring Amber Midthunder. NEXT: sing a song of oblivion with Robert Kirkman and Lorenzo De Felici's Oblivion Song on a new Four-Color Flashback. James H. Williams III usually credited as J. H. Williams III, is an American comics artist and penciller. He is known for his work on titles such as Chase, Promethea, Desolation Jones, Batwoman, and The Sandman: Overture.Williams' early work includes penciling the four-issue miniseries, Deathwish (1994–1995) from Milestone Media. Deathwish was written by Maddie Blaustein and inked by Jimmy Palmiotti. He was one of the artists on the Shade limited series which spun off from the Starman series. Williams gained prominence as the artist on the short-lived (ten issues, 1997–1998) Chase title from DC Comics, where he worked with writer Dan Curtis Johnson. The character had been introduced earlier in Batman 550 (Jan. 1998).Williams collaborated with inker Mick Gray on two DC Elseworlds graphic novels, Justice Riders, written by Chuck Dixon, and Son of Superman, written by Howard Chaykin and David Tischman. Williams' next major work was for WildStorm's America's Best Comics with writer Alan Moore on Promethea (32 issues, 1999–2005). In mid–2005 Williams and writer Warren Ellis launched the Desolation Jones series, and Williams illustrated the two "bookend" issues of Grant Morrison's Seven Soldiers project. In 2007 he worked with Morrison on another project, a three-part story in Batman 667–669. Williams drew Jonah Hex 35 and has stated an interest in doing more, saying "I certainly want to do more issues myself or even a graphic novel if the opportunity and schedule presented itself." Williams became the regular artist on Detective Comics with writer Greg Rucka in June 2009, with the title focusing on Rucka's Batwoman character due to the absence of Batman in the aftermath of "Batman R.I.P." and Final Crisis. Williams returned as artist and co-writer of the new Batwoman series, accompanied by co-author W. Haden Blackman. Batwoman received a GLAAD Media Award in the category of "Outstanding Comic Book" at the 23rd GLAAD Media Awards in June 2012.In July 2012, DC announced that Williams would be the artist for Neil Gaiman's Sandman prequel series, The Sandman: Overture, to be released October 30, 2013. That same month, as part of the San Diego Comic-Con, Williams was one of six artists who, along with DC co-publishers Jim Lee and Dan DiDio, participated in the production of "Heroic Proportions", an episode of the Syfy reality television competition series Face Off, in which special effects were tasked to create a new superhero, with Williams and the other DC artists on hand to help them develop their ideas. The winning entry's character, Infernal Core by Anthony Kosar, was featured in Justice League Dark 16 (March 2013), which was published January 30, 2013.The episode premiered on January 22, 2013, as the second episode of the fourth season. Both Williams and Blackman resigned from the Batwoman title in September 2013 due to differences with DC's editorial decisions. In September 2020, DC Comics announced that Williams would be among the creators of a revived Batman: Black and White anthology series to debut on December 8, 2020. He also provided the variant cover.A HUGE Thank You To All My Patreon, Members, & Subscribe Stars! Later this month, Paul and AJ will begin a new Four-Color Flashback series exploring Matt Wagner's Grendel. Before they do, though, they're making a return trip to the Dreaming for another look at Neil Gaiman's The Sandman, which they pored over in 2014. Their The Deli Counter of Justice collaborator Eric Sipple joins the boys to discuss The Sandman: Overture, which takes place both before and after Gaiman's original 75-issue opus. The gang raves about J.H. Williams III's mind-expanding artwork, discusses how Overture fares as a prequel, questions its additions to the mythos, and compares the Dream we met in the first chapter of The Sandman to the one we know by the final chapter of Overture. Next: after a week off, the boys visit their neighbors down at 10 Cloverfield Lane.
Paul and AJ take one final plunge into Hitchcock Month for a look at 1945's Spellbound, in which Ingrid Bergman falls in love with Gregory Peck on the way to psychoanalyzing him; and 1958's Vertigo, wherein James Stewart becomes obsessed with Kim Novak, or at least his (and Hitchcock's) icy blonde ideal of her. Joining them on this downhill drive is Broken Magic author and The Deli Counter of Justice co-editor Eric Sipple. The boys discuss how the films deal with love and dreams, how much Hitchcock intentionally revealed of himself in his work, Salvador Dalí's surreal contribution to Spellbound, and what Vertigo's reputation as the new greatest movie ever made means for its legacy. Next: Eric is back for another dreamy outing, as we return to the series we covered in 2014's Four-Color Flashback for The Sandman: Overture by Neil Gaiman and J.H. Williams III.

For their first publisher spotlight of 2016, Andy and Derek focus on the new wave of titles from Vertigo, those being launched between October and December of last year. As you might expect, this is an extra long episode of the podcast because the guys discuss twelve new series, and some of them already with three and four issues released. These include: The Twilight Children, by Gilbert Hernandez and Darwyn Cooke Survivors' Club, by Lauren Beukes, Dale Halvorsen, and Ryan Kelly Clean Room, by Gail Simone and Jon Davis-Hunt Art Ops, by Shaun Simon and Michael Allred Unfollow, by Rob Williams and Mike Dowling Slash and Burn, by Si Spencer, Max Dunbar, and Ande Parks Red Thorn, by David Baillie and Meghan Hetrick Jacked, by Eric Kripke and John Higgins Sheriff of Babylon, by Tom King and Mitch Gerads New Romancer, by Peter Milligan and Brett Parson Last Gang in Town, by Simon Oliver and Rufus Dayglo Lucifer, by Holly Black and Lee Garbett Both Derek and Andy enjoy almost all of these titles, but there are a few that really stand out for them -- and they spend a disproportionate time discussing -- including The Twilight Children, Unfollow, Jacked, and Sheriff of Babylon. They also use their analysis of Lucifer to segue into a brief coverage of The Sandman: Overture, Deluxe Edition. The first of that six-issues miniseries was part of the guys' earlier Vertigo spotlight back in November 2013, and a central component of that publisher's previous wave of new titles, but the collected edition was just released late last year. Although it had an unusually long incubation period, The Sandman: Overture does help Andy and Derek juxtapose Vertigo's two big release efforts, leading them into a discussion of possible new directions the publisher may be going.

Sandman Overture, Prince Valiant and some food manga go into a bar, which is to say they get talked about in this episode, because we’re very bad at making analogies. And telling jokes.
In this week's episode Drew and Cody visit the Comic Book Men, compare Michael Bay to that annoying kid on the playground, and discuss the Indiana Jones reboot rumors. Don't miss the guys review The Walking Dead #124, The Wake #7, The Sandman: Overture #1, and Superman Unchained #6! Here's what else we talked about: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Trailer Hollywood Babble-On Comes to AMC Late Night Community May Get "Six Seasons and a Movie" Indiana Jones Reboot with Bradley Cooper? Star Wars Episode VII 30 Years After ROTJ
Captain America: The Winter Soldier is right around the corner and so the Talking Comics crew sits down with resident historian Bob Reyer to talk Steve Rogers. We take you from Simon + Kirby to Ed Brubaker and even discuss the greater meaning of Captain America as a symbol. We also find time to do books of the week which include All-New Ghost Rider, Silver Surfer, Sandman: Overture #2, Empowered, and Alex + Ada.
In which The Off-Panelists appear, then disappear, before reappearing again! Join the Sloth and the Sphinx, and then the Skirt in a surprise appearance, as they round up the week's news for the week - including a much needed day off and a venture into employment, eulogizing the creator of the classic 1966 Batman TV series, the first trailer for the reboot of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, a detailed look at X-Men: Days Of Future Past through a new theatrical trailer, and more! Books reviewed for this week's episode include Vertigo's The Wake and Sandman: Overture, Image's The Manhattan Projects, Marvel's Amazing X-Men and Silver Surfer, and finally - finally - the end of the absurdly long crossover in DC's Justice League Dark. Catching Up: (1:07) Laura has been basking in the afterglow and trying to recover from Stitches West. She's also been dying custom colorways for two stores for the Los Angeles Yarn Crawl. She's been watching Broadchurch. And she's been working with her nephew to design a new Dizzy Blonde website. And she's really wanting a Disneyland trip. Jen wants to go to Disneyland too, but her back needs to recover from Stitches. She's been doing some music with Ron (who's been nicely recovering from his surgery). She's been reading Sandman Overture. And she's been watching a lot of West Wing and Star Trek. In the Knitting Bag: (8:04) Laura has been working on her Leftie by Martina Behm, out of a Miss Babs kit in slate and red. She's also been working on a Teddy Bear Wash Cloth by Elaine Fitzpatrick in Berroco Comfort DK in some shade of brown. Jen has been working on her Rocky Coast Cardigan by Hannah Fettig out of Fibre Company Organik in Highlands. She's also working on a vanilla sock out of Opal Sock Yarn (Petticoat series in greens and purples and yellows). She's worked a bit on her Watership Down KAL shawl. And she finished the Mustachioed blanket by Christina Behnke out of Cascade 128 Superwash in Aporto and Black. She might want to line it, because she hates the backside of intarsia. We mention the Playful Stripes Cardigan by Alana Dakos, 60 Quick Baby Knits, 60 More Quick Baby Knits, and 60 Quick Baby Blankets. Finished Objects: (16:46) Laura finished the Scallop Hat by JT creations out of Knitpicks Brava Sport in Sienna Brown. Jen finished her shawl for the Ravellenics out of Mean Girls Yarn Club. Frog Pond: (18:16) Jen had some trouble designing her shawl because she kept realizing she was going to run out of yarn and having to change the way she was going to knit it. She realized that designing a pattern for Ravellenics is probably not the smartest thing. Devil's Tower: (20:07) Laura has put Assquack into Devil's Tower. It needs to be assembled, but she is sick of hats. On Deck: (20:37) Laura will be making a Nigh Side Hat by Preita Salyer for her brother in Broncos colors of Knitpicks Brava. She will also do some blanket squares for some of her Browncoat Nerd Wars friends who are expecting. Some will be in the Dizzy Blonde DK. Jen wants to make the Water for the Elephants socks by Rose Hiver in some Knitpicks Stroll in a pink and a natural. She also wants to make Chickadee by Ysolda out of Quince and Company Chickadee. She wants to make more baby things for the new niece or nephew, but she will have to buy more yarn because she does not have a lot of baby-appropriate (aka SUPERWASH) yarn. Knit Culture: (23:45) We do a little more of a Stitches West recap. Jen loved all of her classes, even though recommends Edie Eckman’s Where Do They Get Those Numbers? class for mathphobic knitters. She makes it really easy. Laura loved her Brooke Nico class about German and Japanese lace. We mention Brooke Nico's new book, Lovely Knitted Lace: A Geometric Approach to Gorgeous Wearables. We mention the Yarnover Truck. We are proud to be knitting aunties to the youngest of the Knitmore Girls. We loved meeting Miss Kalendar's baby, Steve from It Takes Balls to Knit, Pam from Halos of Hope, Tammy and Ben from Fiber Hooligans, Rick Mondragon, and all the listeners we got to meet. And one final special huge thank you to the girls from Namaste for their support of the Podcaster Throwdown. And Laura wants to thank Erika, Donna, and Liz for the help in the booth. Jen wants to thank Melissa for being a great travel companion. We talk about the Podcaster Throwdown. We WON! Despite having a lot fewer listeners than some podcasts (which just makes our listeners even more awesome!). But everyone put up a great fight. Thank yous to all of you who sent hats, donated money or prizes, to Pam, Ben, Purlescence Yarns, all the podcasters, Steve Haschke (who coordinated all the hats), and the El Segundo Slipt Stitchers. Finally Tally: Team Knit Knit Cafe: 126 + 26 = 152 Team CraftLit: 280 + 20 = 300 Team Knitmore Girls: 802 + 125 = 927 Team Knotty Girls: 876 + 89 = 965 Team Sock-A-Holic: 442 + 165 = 607 Team Ready, Set, Knit: 300 + 8 = 308 Total Podcast Throwdown contribution: 2,826 + 433 = 3,259 General hats, on Stitches West show floor: 289. Previous 10 virtual hats were identified as belonging to Team Sock-A-Holic and now appear in their totals. GRAND TOTAL for Stitches West, 2014: 3,115 actual hats + 433 virtual hats = 3,548 For the Ravellenic Games, Laura didn't even cast on. She was too busy with Stitches West prep. Jen finished, but just barely, because she frogged the shawl too much. We talk about the Stashdown. March's theme is March Madness. Post a finished object on the theme in the thread to win a prize! We announce winners for February. Jill Serenity wins the love challenge with her two cowls. She wins a copy of Cascadia by Amanda Milne and Fiona McLean, courtesy of Cooperative Press. Buzzedangel won the Red flash challenge with her red Hexipuff. She wins a set of conversation hearts stitch markers from k8erpillar. Geek Culture: (42:29) We point out some amazing math-geek knitting articles by Evelyn Lamb. Go read "The Stunning Symbiosis Between Math and Knitting" and "Roots of Unity: Knotted Needles Make Knitted Knots. We're also a big fan of the infographics that Casey put together in celebration of Ravelry reaching 4 million members. Events: (43:55) The Los Angeles Yarn Crawl is April 3rd-6th. Jen is not crawling (she is out of town at Craftcation). Laura is having a meet and greet on Thursday April 3rd from 6:30 to 8:30 at Alamitos Bay Yarn Company. She is having a second meet and greet (also at Alamitos Bay Yarn Company) on Saturday April 5th from 12pm to 3pm. We will be doing something for WWKIP, so watch this space for details. Our next milestone prize will be at 1000 members, so join the Ravelry Group.

In this super-sized episode, Joseph Lewis, original Gobbler and writer/director of the forthcoming pilot Nowheresville, reunites with Paul and AJ to...well, to sort of act as a referee. You see, Paul and AJ disagree on things sometimes. Actually kind of frequently. And anyway, well, one of them is a kilt-wearing cyclone of rage prone to slaughter, and one of them just so happens to be a pre-pubescent hipster who sparks his ire at every turn. Which is a problem when Paul loves Thor: The Dark World and AJ...doesn't. Despite shifting alliances, Joe does his best to keep the slaughter at bay as the three of them debate the human characters' relevance, criticize Heimdall's watchman abilities, and trip all over themselves praising Tom Hiddleston. Plus, the gang talks comics (The Sandman: Overture and Amazing X-Men) and AJ raves about 12 Years a Slave. Next: more attempted slaughter.
This week Andy and Derek return with another special Publisher Spotlight episode, this one devoted to Vertigo. Although the Two Guys with PhDs demonstrate superhuman abilities when tackling a variety of titles, it's obvious that they cannot cover all of Vertigo's history and output. Instead, they have decided to focus on the most recent wave of comics coming out from the imprint. This includes the many titles that have been released since the summer and in the wake of Karen Berger's departure. Derek and Andy discuss the significance of these latest releases, what they suggest about the possible direction of the imprint, and how these comics fit within the larger history of Vertigo. The recent series that the Two Guys discuss include The Wake, 100 Bullets: Brother Lono, FBP: Federal Bureau of Physics, the new Astro City series, Trillium, Tom Strong and the Planet of Peril, Sandman: Overture, Hinterkind, Coffin Hill, and the new anthology The Witching Hour. They also focus on the narrative trajectories of some of Vertigo's more established series, including the current run of The Unwritten, Fables, and Fairest. Here, they look at The Unwritten/Fables crossover and recent original graphic novels and collections such as The Unwritten: Tommy Taylor and the Ship That Sank Twice, Fables: Werewolves of the Heartland, and the upcoming Fairest in All the Land. As this episode aptly shows, Vertigo is still one of the most exciting places to find cutting-edge comics!
Despite a faulty first recording and a 5 minute laughing fit we tried our best to edit around, we managed to actually discuss some comic-book related things this week, including first time Sandman readers, Sandman: Overture delays, DC's Five Years Later, the return of Captain Cold, the new soon-to-be-canceled-Ms. Marvel comic, the failure of promoting new characters, some listener questions, and big Thor: The Dark World spoiler talk. Starring Ryan Higgins, Omar Brodrick, Jim Jokisch, Bryce Larsen, Toby Sidler, and Charlie West.
On this week's show to discuss the Neil Gaiman and J.H. Williams III' series, The Sandman: Overture. We also chat about the end of Fables, Sex Criminals being banned, and the end of Battle of the Atom. We also talk about some of the big news of the week, answer some of your questions and of course, we tell you about some of our favourite books of the week which include: Children of the Sea, Chew, Alex + Ada, Drumhellar, Hellboy: The Midnight Circus, Superior Spider-Man, Saga, Guardians of the Galaxy, X-Men: Battle of the Atom, Infinity, Batgirl and more.
On this week2019s show the guys talk about the conclusion of one Marvel events and the penultimate issue of another. They also delve into a return of Five Ghosts, a return of a Robin and maybe even the return of Peter Parker. In which the Off-Panelists make it rain! Following a lengthy string of two-manned episodes, the terrible trio returns to wreak havoc on an unsuspecting listenership, as the Southerner leads the Scotsman and the Sloth in a recap of an eventful week in both the world of comics and their personal lives. Following their reactions to the new X-Men: Days of Future Past trailer, a brief early review of Thor: The Dark World from the release abroad, and impressions of Batman: Arkham Origins from the resident Bat-expert, the three dive into the week's books and recount yet another Saga-edition of Brian K. Vaughn's Saga, the long-awaited return of Neil Gaimain's opus in Sandman Overture, vengeance in the courtroom with the finale of The Punisher: Trial of the Punisher, and even a second review of an Image Comics release from last week, Pretty Deadly. This episode comes to you all the way from Dimension Z!Download Here!
Small crew this week, as we discuss Damian: Son of Batman #1, Forever Evil catch-up, terrible comic book storage habits, Pretty Deadly #1, the rise and fall of Green Lantern, X-Men: Battle of the Atom wrap-up, Mark Waid's digital-only Daredevil, Yahoo's article about comic speculators, new Asterix, and Sandman: Overture #1. Starring Ryan Higgins, Brock Sager, and Toby Sidler.
Marvel finaliza la miniserie de dos números The Trial of the Punisher.
