Just so you know, this article is NOT about what you think it is.—> Last chance to subscribe before I start sending this out to SUBSCRIBERS ONLY 5x WEEK. ———-> The free letter will still go out 1x a week no worries. You thought this article was about “getting to know the right people” didn’t you?About building up your “Linked In connections”, or something crappy like that…. :)Nope. It’s about this graph. “But Kale, graphs are BORING”. No, they aren’t. This one is pretty life changing. Here’s what it means. If you had invested in Apple, Amazon, Facebook, or Google, back in 2012, you would be rich.I can hear it now…DUH!!!!But wait a second, that’s just your hindsight bias talking. Ever heard the saying, everything in hindsight is 20/20?Yeah, I’m willing to bet many of you DIDN’T invest in those 4 companies back in 2012 (I didn’t either). And why was that??Because most people didn’t (and still don’t) understand the POWER of a NETWORK EFFECT BUSINESS. What’s a network effect? The best example is a phone. If only 1 person had a phone it would be useless, right? No one to call.If 2 people get a phone the phone’s network becomes twice as valuable. And so on.Same thing happened with Facebook. There’s nothing proprietary about Facebook. I could start the “Kalebook” right now if I wanted to. But GOOD LUCK getting 2 BILLION MONTLY USERS to switch over to the “Kalebook”. The network effect is simply too powerful. Does that make sense? The crazy thing about that graph above is that they all played out the same way. Apple = The Mobile NetworkGoogle = The Search NetworkFacebook = The Social NetworkAmazon = The Shopping NetworkBack in 2012, they all had similar Market Caps (meaning they all had similar overall company values). And today, they are unquestionably 4 of the most powerful, influential, and MASSIVE companies on the planet. Good luck starting the next Apple, Google, Facebook, or Amazon. It’s nearly impossible, because their NETWORK EFFECTS are almost insurmountable. So, normal people like me and you have only one choice.GET AS CLOSE AS POSSIBLE TO THE NETWORK. As a user of any of those platforms? You are just the PRODUCT.Shop on Amazon? Use google? Scroll on Facebook? Using an Iphone?Yep, we all do. But in order to MAKE MONEY from those networks, you have to get CLOSER to them on the SUPPLY SIDE.Sell a product on AmazonRank your website up higher on Google.Run Facebook Advertising.Create an App. The closer to the source, IE, the more INFLUENTIAL you are on each platform, the richer you will be.“but Kale, why can’t I just buy stocks of those 4 companies and I’ll get RICH??”Sorry bud, it’s TOO LATE. The cat is out of the bag.Everyone KNOWS these 4 companies have won. That’s already priced in. I personally don’t want to bet on these companies becoming 10x larger. Sure, it could happen, but is it as likely as it was back in 2012? Nah. But what if I told you there was another network that is exactly like FB, AMZ, GOOG, and AAPL, but NOW. It’s called, (drum roll please) BITCOIN. (I told you the title didn’t give away this article!)Bitcoin is “only” a 200 Billion Dollar Market Cap right now…But it shares all of the similarities to those 4 I listed above (plus improves on many of them).A DOMINANT market positionA network of crazed loyalists who won’t shut up about the “brand”Technology that is at least 10x better than the thing it replaces*note* Bitcoin is considered a “digital gold” - it is likely more than 100x better than Gold in a vast number of ways, but that’s another article.A massive untapped market that can be quickly and frictionlessly on boardedThe list goes on. I don’t need to laud Bitcoin any more in this article but I’ll leave you with food for thought. 1) How CLOSE are you to the “Sun”? (big network effect companies like AMZ & AAPL). Can you get CLOSER and thus PROFIT?2) What if there are other assets that have the same properties as the biggest companies in the World, but that aren’t as well known yet? Would you benefit from owning them before everyone else catches on?Kalep.s. I just want to give one more MASSIVE THANK YOU to anyone who has read or listened to “The Kale Letter” so far…True to my word, I’m cutting off all these free letters. We don't know what time the wedding feast will be served, but we can see that someone is setting out the salad forks! The date of the Rapture is not predictable, but there's a precise timeline for some of the things that will happen after that. So, when we see the world being prepared for those things - those later events - surely the flame of our hope must burn brighter. For the past couple of days Jim has been taking us through some of those future events and present preparations. Here's the conclusion of his sermon, How Close are We? Concerned atomic scientists have set their Doomsday Clock to 100 seconds before midnight. Well, Christians aren't waiting for "doomsday," but many of us would agree that time is short. There may be less than a hundred seconds until the Church is snatched away; we believe there's nothing that has to happen before that event. After that, though, the Antichrist will have to break a treaty that hasn't been made yet; and desecrate a Temple that hasn't been built yet. Can we line up current events with future events, as prophesied by Jesus, Daniel, Ezekiel and others? Here's Jim with Part 2 of How Close are We? Inquiring minds want to know...How Close are We? When things get dicey - when the world starts looking even more wicked and scary than usual - people start asking about the return of Christ. That's probably good, if it drives us to our Bibles and prayer. In a recent series we looked at Daniel's view of the Last Days. Well, Jesus spoke about that prophecy, 500 years later. Let's find out what details He filled-in. Pastor Jim begins a new sermon today, taken from Matthew 24. If I could take all of the BS about “success” and cram it into the single most actionable statement ever, it would be this: The key to success is consistency. I don’t care how cheesy it is… It’s the truth. Print it on a T-shirt. Crochet it on a wall hanging. Hashtag it on Instagram. Just don’t forget it. If you want to be successful at anything BE CONSISTENT. No-one encapsulates consistency more than my latest guest on Escape Velocity, Steli Efti. Steli is the co-creator of The Startup Chat, a podcast now with over 450 episodes. Did you know that the average podcast dies out after just 7 episodes? Yeah, 7. He’s ahead by 443. Steli’s co-host is Hiten Shah, the co-founder of Kissmetrics, CrazyEgg and FYI… and for the last 4 and a half years, Steli and Hiten have recorded two episodes every single week. Steli has an amazing story of how he went from nothing to starting and skyrocketing his SaaS, Close.com He sold everything he had, bought a one-way ticket from his home in Europe to Silicon Valley, wasn’t great at speaking English, didn’t have a Visa, but he planned to start a software company… …without knowing anything about software. It sounds like a disaster, but through hard work and consistency, he’s now crazy successful. Close.com is a sales and communication tool that pioneered many of the trends we now see in CRMs today. You’ve just got to hear the story straight from the horse’s mouth. Get your headphones ready and tune in. Steli is the coolest guy (leather jacket and all) and just ridiculously easy to chat with. In this episode, we talked about: - How he got started as a SaaS entrepreneur - Moving to a new country for business - His interview on day 2 in Silicon Valley (it’ll make you cringe) - The website that he made… and that died - ElasticSales, his Sales-as-a-service company that led to Close.com - How Steli evaluates the value of a conference - How Close.com managed to innovate ahead of the curve - The business war over their domain name - Steli’s failed funding experience - How to sell more from your product demos This is an epic interview, not only because you’ll learn about how he got started in business, but because you’ll hear from someone that made a lot of mistakes and pushed onwards until he figured it out. It’s encouraging, to say the least. And in these times, I think we all need a bit of encouragement. -- Dan Martell has advised more startups than his hometown has people and teaches startup founders like you how to scale. He previously created, raised venture funding for and successfully exited two tech startups: Flowtown and Clarity.fm. Today on The Startup Chat, Steli and Hiten talk about launching a starter plan. Recently, the team at Close.com introduced a Starter Plan for their software - a plan that’s designed for 1 - 3 person teams and costs $35 a month. This comes after years of focusing on bigger companies and charging a lot more for their CRM In today’s episode of the show, Steli and Hiten talk dive into why Close decided to introduce a starter plan, one of the main philosophies at Close, how fear preventing the team from introducing a lower priced plan and much more. Time Stamped Show Notes: 00:00 About today’s topic 00:32 Why this topic was chosen. 02:20 Why Close decided to introduce a starter plan. 03:11 One of the main philosophies at Close. 03:38 How Close discourages certain companies from buying their product. 04:21 How Close’s reach grew over the years. 07:55 How fear preventing the team from introducing a lower priced plan. 08:43 How Close is now ready to support smaller customers. 10:00 How a lot of companies focus on startups initially and move on to bigger customers. 3 Key Points: We never wanted to compete on price. We always believed in the founders of small and medium companies. We’ve probably told a thousand companies not to buy our product. [0:00:01] Steli Efti: Hey everybody, this is Steli Efti. [0:00:03] Hiten Shah: And this is Hiten Shah. And today on the Startup Chat we're going to talk about something that I see a lot of companies do. And I just saw the folks at Close.com, happens to be Steli's company, do this a very recently. I think a little quietly. But I go stalk his pricing page and his site sometimes. So I saw this. And so I'd love to talk about it. So what they've recently done, and I'd love to hear the thinking behind it, is for their CRM, they've launched a starter plan. And that's for one to three person teams, and it's at $35 per month if you pay monthly. And it's right under $29.75 if you pay annually. And prior to that, their lowest plan was actually $65 per month if you pay monthly. And $55.25 if you pay annually. So with that, I'd love to hear your thoughts on this, because this is a very common practice that companies do. And I'd love to just understand how you folks thought about it. And I think it'd be really beneficial to our audience to kind of hear what this sort of thinking was like. [0:01:07] Steli Efti: Yeah. So this took us a very long time to launch, right? So we from day one ... We launched in January 2013 with Close. And from day one our lowest tier plan was 65 bucks a month if you paid monthly. And from day one, we had a lot of competitors that offered a lot cheaper products and entry prices. But they were always, if you looked at their kind of a comparable product, we were always at the same range or even a bit more affordable. We just never wanted to compete based on price. We always wanted to build and create the most value, and built the best fucking product for our type of customer, which are small and medium sized businesses. And wanted to just crush it, help companies close more deals and drive more revenue where it wouldn't matter if you close a couple of deals more a month, because you have the right tool in your hands. That's tens of thousands dollars more in value to your business. It doesn't matter if you're paying 65 or 45, or 35, or whatever bucks a month per user. So that was our philosophy from day one. And I think that philosophy served us pretty well in the early days. I think one thing that happened kind of slowly, and it built up more and more over time. And I think we were a bit tone deaf to it, and a bit kind of with a blind spot around that was that ... I mean, we always believed in, and invested in founders, and startups, and the smallest companies possible. We always knew that we are probably going to be one of the few,

In today’s episode of The Startup Chat, Steli and Hiten talk about the difference between running a fully remote company versus semi-remote companies. The business world has changed. It’s now possible for employees to work outside of an office and be very productive at it. But deciding if your company should be a remote company or a semi-remote company is a critical decision a founder can make In this episode, Steli and Hiten talk about how Close started as a semi-remote company, why remote employees shouldn’t be treated or feel like second class employees, how Hitens company managed their remote teams. Time Stamped Show Notes: 00:00 About today’s topic. 01:10 Why this topic was chosen. 02:00 How Close started as a semi-remote company. 03:39 Why remote employees shouldn’t be treated or feel like second class employees. 03:37 Why Airbnb stopped referring to their headquarters as HQ. 04:44 How companies fail to understand how to make remote working work. 05:05 How Hitens company managed their remote teams. 05:50 Why everyone should have the information they need to do their jobs. 06:06 How to ensure that everyone should have the information they need to do their jobs. 06:33 The importance of understanding that you have to fight silos. 3 Key Points: Remote employees shouldn’t be treated or feel like second class employeesWe started documenting meetings all the time.Everyone should have the information they need to do their jobs. [0:00:00] Steli Efti: Hey, everybody this is Steli Efti. [0:00:03] Hiten Shah: And this is Hiten Shah. [0:00:04] Steli Efti: And today on The Startup Chat, we're going to talk about the difference between running a fully-distributed, or remote company, versus being, let's say, semi-remote and semi distributed. So, let's first define what the difference is between the two, and then let's go through the pros and cons of both approaches. Right, so we have talked recently on The Startup Chat about the trend of remote work and that not going away. Check that episode out if you haven't listened to it, but today I wanted to talk about a difference between companies that from Day One have decided that they're not going to have an office and that every person that works in the company is basically working in the distributed fashion remotely and is setting up their own work environment. All right, and all work, all collaborative work, all communication, happens virtually versus companies that do part of their work or have part of their workers outside an office. So, semi-remote, in my definition, means you have an office or multiple offices but you also have... Either you have a bunch of people that work for you that are not working out of these offices and live in completely different locations or, and this is a big or, you have everybody that works for you, let's say... The early days of Close we were qualifying ourselves as semi-remote because we did have a small office, and everybody lived in the Bay area, so they could get to the office. But people were traveling so much, or entire team was traveling so much, and we really didn't care that much about having working hours in the office. But we thought of ourselves as semi-remote because, at any given time, it was very rare that all of us were at the office. At most of two out of three months there was maybe just like two out of the six or seven people that worked actually in the office. [0:02:03] Hiten Shah: Wow, yeah I've had an office once, and I didn't really go into it as much as other folks did that were in the area. I don't think we've made it the biggest requirement to go there and then we had a lot of folks who were remote as well, and I think I'm going to start it off by... their equal in terms of team members. And I think that's a very challenging thing when you have an office and you also have r...

333: How to Deal with Fraud in Your Startup

The Startup Chat with Steli and Hiten

In today’s episode of The Startup Chat, Steli and Hiten talk about how founders can deal with fraud in their startups. Running a  startup difficult enough when everything is going smoothly. But when you’re a founder, sometimes things happen that if not managed properly can disrupt the flow of your business or worse. One of these situations is fraud. In this episode, Steli and Hiten share their thoughts on what fraud is, things that every founder should know about it, preventative measures you can take, what to do when fraud happens and much more. Time Stamped Show Notes: 00:45 Why this topic was chosen. 01:01 How Close dealt with fraud at the early stages of the business. 02:20 Why taking preventative measures are important. 03:45 How to identify potential problems that you could run into with your product. 04:00 An example of a fraudulent situation at Close. 05:27 Measures and tools you could use to prevent fraud. 06:46 Why fraud is not exclusive to big companies. 07:43 Why you should always take an alert seriously. 08:13 Why you should invest continuously in fraud prevention. 08:19 Why you shouldn’t stop when you detect one fraudulent user. 3 Key Points: Know where your risk is in your business. When an alert comes up, take it seriously. If there’s one fraudulent user, there are going to be more. [0:00:02] Steli Efti: Hey everybody this is Steli Efti.   [0:00:04] Hiten Shah: And this is Hiten Shah.   [0:00:07] Steli Efti: And in today's episode of the Startup Chat we wanna tackle a little challenging topic and that is the topic of how do you deal with fraud, how do you handle fraud in your startup, right, and this is you know obviously a tough subject and it depends on what the situation is but the reason I wanted to talk to you about this Hiten is that you know the history of course we've always had to deal with some level of fraud, people trying now using some credit cards to sign up propriate accounts or even worse people doing some really with our software and so from a very early time we always had to like invest in fraud prevention and protection and had to like deal with this and just recently last few weeks we had some really big attacks going on, some really crazy shit and thankfully we have an amazing team and we are like tackling these things and stopping them further on, you know but it's a huge pain in the ass and it has caused us probably over the years a lot of money to deal with this. So I thought because it's a top of mind for me, I thought it might make sense for the two of us to talk about this from a very fundamental point of view because I think most Startup founders they don't think about fraud, what could be done with their app, how somebody could take advantage of their app to cost them money, to make money to do some suspicious or just illegal stuff with it and so they might catch this when it's way too late and it might cause some real trouble down the line so I thought we just cover some like basics, things that every founder should know, think through, how to deal with it preventitively in the beginning but also what do you do once shit happens, you get a DDoS attack or some other crazy shit is happening to your app, you are totally surprised, how do you deal with this, maybe cover some of the basics and hopefully help some founders prevent getting into trouble at some point.   [0:02:02] Hiten Shah: Yeah I think the first step preventitively real quick is like, know where your risk is in your business, so if you are collecting credit cards, one risk is that people will try to run fake credit cards through your system. If you are using a service like Stride, there are a lot of protection built in, right, but it's very similar to like, well you better make sure you have SSL certificate on your site,

In this episode, Steli and Hiten talk about NPS surveys, the importance of carrying them out and how they can be beneficial to your startup as a whole. NPS stands for Net Promoter Score and is a customer satisfaction score created by Bain and Company. When carried out properly, NPS surveys give you an idea of how your customers feel about your company. They have become very popular with startups in the last few years. However, due to the nature of the surveys, they also have some criticisms. For example, some critics point out that results are arbitrary and “made up”. Tune-in to find out more about NPS surveys, at what stage to conduct them in your startup, the importance of tracking your business’s progress through customer ratings, and much more. Time Stamped Show Notes: 00:00 About today’s topic. 00:35 What NPS is all about. 01:08 Some criticisms of NPS surveys. 01:45 Some benefits of carrying out NPS surveys. 02:47 The current state of NPS surveys in the startup world. 04:00 A mistake Steli made at Close.io. 04:30 How Close.io surveys their customers. 05:30 Why we’re talking about NPS surveys today. 07:28 A major reason why companies are not consistent with NPS surveys. 08:12 What “Allergies to processes” means. 09:05 Another major benefit of carrying out NPS surveys 09:20 Some tools you can use to carry out NPS surveys. 10:22 Some things to keep in mind when carrying out NPS surveys. 3 Key Points: Surveying customers is not a bad thing. Annoying them with lots of surveys is a bad thing. If you’re not doing it on a regular basis you’re missing out on a key part of your learning process. NPS surveys help you figure out if improvements you’re making at your startup are good for your customers. [0:00:00] Steli Efti: All right everybody, Hello, this is Steli Efti.   [0:00:04] Hiten Shah: And this is Hiten Shah. And today, we're gonna talk about NPS surveys. See, we like talking about more than just sales and marketing.   [0:00:10] Steli Efti: We just want to bullshit and chat about business and life, and hopefully while we're doing that, provide a lot of value to people.   [0:00:15] Hiten Shah: The world's best business podcast. Shit.   [0:00:17] Steli Efti: Oh, shit.   [0:00:20] Hiten Shah: For people trying to get shit done.   [0:00:21] Steli Efti: Done, yeah. We don't want to give you feedback that's bullshit.   [0:00:24] Hiten Shah: Yeah we want you to do your best. Which is short for Net Promoter Score and we talked about it in a prior episode, about early access and competitor research. It's something, I think ... NPS, Net Promoter Score is a customer satisfaction score. It's a methodology created by Bain and company. It's actually a registered trademark, but there are a lot of tools that let you do it. It's a simple zero to ten question, which, the question is basically how likely are you to recommend this product, and it's very popular. Lots of companies have adopted it and more recently, in the last few years, startups have really become drawn to it. There's also some controversy around it because some people say it's just arbitrary and made up, because based on the response from zero to ten that someone gives, they are bucketing it into one of three groups. They are either promoters, detractors, or do you remember the last one, Steli? promoters, detractors, or ...   [0:01:26] Steli Efti: Passive! Passive.   [0:01:27] Hiten Shah: Yeah.   [0:01:27] Steli Efti: Passive. Yes. And you, it's just based on their score. Nines and tens are promoters, and the rest is split up between detractors and passive. And so it's become super popular but it's arbitra...
