Patrick Klepek on the reality of parenting in the age of Roblox and YouTube. I listened to hours of podcasts about how screen time affects kids of all ages and how parents should manage screen time but I still felt completely unprepared for this challenge when I had a kid.  I think the reason for that is that there's a lot of reporting about how screens are impacting kids, and a lot of reporting about the research into this subject, but rarely did I encounter a conversation between parents that talks about how any of that information can be realistically applied in the real world.   This week on the podcast we're joined by Patrick Klepek in order to have the kind of conversation I wish I heard before I became a parent, but I think there's something here for everyone. Patrick is the cofounder of Remap, a website and one of my favorite podcasts about video games, and the writer behind Crossplay, a newsletter about the intersection of parenting and games. Patrick is also my former colleague at Vice, back when I worked at Motherboard and he at Waypoint. Patrick has been reporting about video games for most of his life, is a wonderful writer, and a parent. I find his perspective on many of these issues—screen time, parental controls, YouTube, Roblox—extremely useful and interesting, and I hope you do as well.  YouTube Version: https://youtu.be/LjK1Swsm1m4 Listen to the weekly podcast on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or YouTube.  Become a paid subscriber for early access to these interview episodes and to power our journalism.

Send us a Text: Ask Us a Question! This episode of Waypoints is a bit ... different. Host Jim Klug sits down with former White House Chief of Staff, Congressman, Mayor of Chicago, and U.S. Ambassador to Japan - Rahm Emanuel - for an out-of-the-ordinary, candid conversation that blends politics, perspective, and pure flyfishing obsession. While Rahm has been featured on countless political shows, this discussion steps away from pure campaign strategy and policy spin to explore how one of America's most recognized political figures finds happiness and focus through flyfishing. From chasing peacock bass in the jungles of the Amazon to stalking trout in Montana, Rahm's passion for the sport runs deep.Known for his intensity and drive in the political arena, Emanuel opens up about how time on the water provides clarity, humility, and balance - and why conservation, access, and public lands should matter to every angler. The conversation ranges from global travel and favorite fisheries to flyfishing's potential role in connecting people across political lines. It also touches on the current political climate in D.C. and the future of conservation and outdoor recreation policy. It's an unexpected and refreshing look at a figure who may soon make headlines for much more than his casting stroke - and who just might be the one to bring flyfishing back to the White House in 2028!Waypoints is brought to you by PatagoniaTo bring their gear to life, Patagonia is motivated by relentless curiosity and a passion for the wild. "You don't build courage by avoiding what you're afraid of. You build courage by moving through it." -Diane Gansauer Our hosts, Stephanie McCullough and Kevin Gaines, explore an extraordinary midlife reinvention with Diane Gansauer, who traded a high-profile government position for one of the few full-time funeral celebrant roles in the United States. Her transformation proves that stepping away from prestige can lead to real personal fulfillment! "I became more effective and a happier person," Diane reflects on leaving her role as deputy director of a Colorado state agency overseeing multimillion-dollar conservation grants. The political pressures and visibility of managing programs for Great Outdoors Colorado had worn thin. "What I liked best was really the work one-on-one with families," she says. Her journey to funeral celebrancy began serendipitously when a wealthy philanthropist, whose ranch had received conservation grants, learned about her occasional memorial officiating. This connection led to a position with North America's largest funeral services provider, where she ultimately celebrated over 400 lives. The role required mastering the art of storytelling. Working with grieving families, she learned to capture the essence of lives lived. That's a skill that demands deep listening and authentic connection. This was intimate work that stood in stark contrast to her previous bureaucratic responsibilities. But Diane's reinvention didn't stop there. Upon retirement, she embarked on the Continental Divide Trail, completing 3,100 miles from the Mexico border to Canada. "It doesn't matter what other people are doing, it's between you and the mountain." Her experiences culminated in her book "The Waypoints," in which she weaves together insights from honoring 400 lives and conquering thousands of miles of trail. Midlife transitions aren't about climbing higher on conventional ladders. Sometimes they're about finding entirely different mountains to climb, ones that align with who we're becoming rather than who we thought we should be! Chico Fernández is a pioneer, teacher, innovator, and a lifelong ambassador for the art of casting flies in saltwater. From his early days in Miami shaping the very foundation of modern saltwater fly fishing, to decades spent writing, teaching, tying, and traveling the globe, Chico's fingerprints are all over the evolution of this sport. His books on bonefish and redfish are still regarded as essential reading, and his iconic fly patterns - like the Seaducer and the Bonefish Special - continue to catch fish (and fill fly boxes) around the world.Born in Cuba and exiled to Florida as a teenager, Chico brought with him a bamboo rod, a love of jazz, and a passion for fishing that would shape the rest of his life. From late-night tarpon missions in the Keys with a young Flip Pallot, to gear design work with some of the biggest names in the industry, to adventures in the Amazon, the Yucatán, the Indian Ocean and beyond, Chico's journey has been nothing short of remarkable. In this episode, we dig deep into his story: the early days, the philosophy that's guided his life, and the lessons learned along the way. If you love saltwater flyfishing and if you value the soul of this sport, then this conversation is one you won't want to miss. After the success of the 2024 Belize and 2023 Baja Bluegrass events, we're excited to bring the experience back to Belize for 2025.
