I've been feeling a lot of anxiety lately. Our wilderness kid is doing really well, so you'd think, after all the heartache, pain, and anxiety of that journey, things would finally feel calm. But life has a way of throwing curveballs, doesn't it?But honestly, I've been judging my anxiety hard. What's your problem? Why can't you handle this? You used to be good at this! You're a mess. It's exhausting, and the more I try to push these thoughts away, the louder they get.But then a good reminder brought me back on the path of unshaming and it started to shift my perspective. I know many of you are navigating hard times too. The mistakes we make, the thoughts that feel overwhelming, they need unshaming. They need understanding. That's where healing starts. And as I work through this, I'm learning to love myself through the experience. If you're in a season of anxiety or shame, I want you to know I'm here for you. Together, we can unlearn the judgment and begin to embrace understanding. In this episode on unshaming anxiety, I reflect on:My recent struggles with anxiety and what they've taught me;How anxiety often masks deeper emotions, like sadness or fear; The transformative power of understanding and accepting anxiety;Unshaming past actions to regain control and self-compassion.Please know, you are not alone.Other episodes on this topic: 61. In this interview, I speak with Diane about her expertise in sex therapy, and her American Association of Sexual Educators, Counselors, and Therapists (AASECT) certification. She discusses sex therapy, couples therapy with sex issues, and she discusses the PLISSIT model, which describes various levels of intervention, which include Permission, Limited Information, Specific Suggestions and Intensive Therapy. She discusses her eclectic approach, which is grounded in a Humanistic perspective, helping clients accept themselves and address shame. She explains that sexual relationships are complex involving how each partner feels about each other, the challenges people experience in their life, and their different stages in their relationships. She discusses her blog article, “To the Wife Upset About Her Husband's Porn Viewing: An Open Letter From a Sex Therapist”, and how she addresses how porn is symbolic and is a “fantasy” and what we can learn from this about our partner. She explains how she often sees men who come in by themselves, because they're partner is upset with them about their pornography use, and how this often suggests an Identified Patient perspective, and missing the couple dynamics and how the couple can heal and improve their relationship together. We also discuss the conflict between being respectful of women, but then also, for heterosexual men particularly, to also be enjoying pornography and objectification of women. She discussed perpetrator fear and how it become more pronounced after the #MeToo movement, and how a number of clients came to work with her to discuss their past sexual encounters. She discusses consent and what that means and looks like in sexual encounters and relational sexual relationships. Diane Gleim, LMFT is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and AASECT Certified Sex Therapist and Supervisor practicing online throughout California and in-person in Santa Rosa, California. In addition to her private practice, Diane's work also includes providing trainings and consultations on sex therapy; writing the blog "Underneath the Sheets" on Psychology Today's website; and supervising sex-therapists-in-training. She has been quoted in various press and a guest on podcasts. Diane has been voted Sonoma County's Best Sex Therapist by the readers of the North Bay Bohemian five times.

Sending your kid away to treatment often comes with a lot of shame. The shame of not being a good enough parent, not being the person that can help them, and so on. This inner critic shows up in your head and can be incredibly loud, right?I'm continuing my conversation with David Bedrick and we invite you to have a different look at this inner critic and the blame and shame we put on the decisions we've made. Because what is it really giving you? Is it helpful for you to blame yourself? Is it in any way helpful for your kid or your family? The answer is no, it isn't. Come and join this second part of my conversation with David in which we dive deeper into this and other concepts like seeing your kid both as a student and a teacher and unshaming the identified patient in your family. Embrace yourself to dive deep!In this episode on unshaming the identified patient in your family, we discuss:Unshaming the identified patient in your family; The shame around sending your kid away; The unhelpful inner critic in our head;Seeing your kid as both a student and a teacher. If you'd like to connect, you can find me on Instagram (@bethhillmancoaching) or go to my website www.bethhillmancoaching.com. Gamma Intel (@gammaintelligence) is a sonic explorer who can rewire your brain with his left-of-centre approach to sound and rhythm. The Dutchman is a master of contrast between the dark corners of the dance floor and moments of emotional light. He draws on broken beats, acid, techno and electro but skews them through his own lens on labels like brokntoys, Pinkman and Mechatronica. He recently co-founded the Nerve Collect label with friend Identified Patient, and will release his E.M EP there at the end of March. Gamma's love of creative sampling and meticulous sound design carries over into the music he plays in his sets. This week's mix is perfect proof as it twists and turns on contorted basslines and muscular drum patterns. It's an intense and futuristic listen that goes through moments of all-out hand-in-the-air dance floor joy and heads down marching to slick jungle workouts and dystopian worlds of bass. Few DJs can manipulate sound in such thrilling ways.

This is the 3rd in a 5 part series about how childhood issues can affect you as an adult and how we learn what we live and live what we learn. If we grow up being the one who is the Identified Patient or "scapegoat" we carry that into adult relationships. If we're lucky, as I was, to finally have enough and go "UNCLE!" we have a chance to be happy and healthy. The Getting Past Your Breakup program can lead you on that journey and make the devastating loss be the best thing that ever happened to you.
This is the first podcast in a series about growing up in a dysfunctional family where all are losing their heads and blaming it on you. You never think, "It's not me, it's them..." and learning to survive there is all you can really think about. Emotions, for children are really a difficult landscape. They're either screaming bloody murder or sucking it all in. But no one gets a lesson on truly how to act and what life is like for a child in a completely crazy landscape. I'm going to bring this to a conclusion in a few upcoming podcasts to be released this week. Stay tuned and please let me know what you think!
Dr. Brad Reedy discuses the concept of the Identified Patient. When a family focuses its efforts on saving, fixing, or helping one specific family member, that person becomes the Identified Patient. Once this person has been identified, it can absolve or in some way prevent the family from looking at their family system as a whole and each of themselves as individuals. This set-up can prevent or impede anyone in the family from doing the true growth work they need/want to do. Dr. Reedy talks about the history of this concept and how this dynamic can play out in families.
Did you know that the identified patient within the dysfunctional family is selected to outsource dysfunction? Narcissistic family scapegoat children are selected for the same reason. The identified patient in a dysfunctional family is often considered the black sheep and this is one of the many challenges that children who are unfortunately tagged to play the dysfunctional role of scapegoat also faces. The narcissistic family system is designed to silence those who have been selected as scapegoat when he or she was a child. His or her family might hold them to an unrealistic expectation such as taking dark secrets to the grave. Identified patient within a dysfunctional family headed by narcissistic parents. Parents and or grandparents who have narcissistic traits or other dark personality types, often will unconsciously choose a child to scapegoat or blame for all factors that makes their family dysfunctional. This child can be perceived by the NPD parents as, "The problem child who needs to be fixed." As unfair as this might seem to be, it's often more common than you might think. The identified patient or symptom-bearer within a narcissistic or dysfunctional family, tends to ironically be the first if not the only family member who seeks and receives mental health counseling, regardless of the consequent negative treatment and experience of unmerited blame from other family members. Ronni and Jennie: Breaking the Cycles of Trauma and Abuse, Silence and Shame
Ronni and Jennie talk about the roles they played in their family growing up, how the family dynamics put up a roadblock in their relationship, and how they coped with it.
People experiencing oppression are not generating illness from within, they're being poisoned from the outside and then punished for how they respond to that poison. If we, as therapists, don't let that part of the conversation into the room, we're going to pathologize the wrong part of the equation, we're going to make our client the "Identified Patient," and we're going to perpetuate their oppression.Originally published 9/14/2019

In this podcast from 26 August 2015, we delve into the concept of the Identified Patient. The term is used in family therapy to describe the situation where one family member is labelled as "the problem child", and has all of the family issues projected onto them. The identified patient is also often the person that looks for external help or shows the first outwardly signs of inner-turmoil. Stephen Bach and Mags (under her previous screen name Monkey) look at this phenomenon from their own experiences and discuss how a similar situation can occur in other toxic settings too. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/swanwaters/message
The Netherlands has been an incredibly fertile breeding ground for electronic music in recent years, and Identified Patient is the latest fascinating artist to emerge. For that reason we snapped him up for a debut on our UFO series just this month: his Signals In Snakes EP is four tracks of beguiling acid, darkwave and industrial electronics that exist in their own weird universe and come after a breakout Boiler Room show and plenty of well regarded sets at De School in Amsterdam. Always exploring new rhythms and tempos, he continues to do so with a fine entry into our mix series. He really shows the breadth of his range here across a nearly two hour mix that starts like a soundtrack. It depicts cosmic landscapes, indigenous tribes and alien worlds through a series of sludgy rhythms and futuristic dub chuggers before more propulsive drums take you to the club. Identified Patient never hurries his work but is always moving you along, with spacious and eerie tracks, breakbeat bangers and deep minimalism all included along the way in a mix that is brilliantly evocative and otherworldly.

Dr. Reedy discusses the dynamic of the identified patient and implications for a family systems based treatment model. This is a great listen for individuals who are struggling with a loved one stuck in self-defeating and self-sabotaging patterns.
Dr. Reedy will discuss the systemic dynamics when one member of a family develops a disorder that requires attention in treatment. He will discuss ways to understand how this role is solidified by homeostasis. Beneath his/her symptoms, there can lie a treasure for the whole family. Moving from the identified patient to the family hero, he will explore how to exit the simplistic paradigm of the identified patient model.
