Welcome back for the next journey of The Family Express Podcast with Kathryn de Bruin and Ronda Evans where our destination is resilient and connected families. Today's guest Norma Brito de la Cuesta from Costa Rica. Norma has a masters degree, and she has a vast history of experience in the field of psychology, and she is a practicing family therapist. All Aboard !0:55. Norma talks about her vast experience in the field of psychology. 2:30. From all of her years of experience, Norma's #1 recommendation is to explore deeply with every family about the beliefs and values that guide a family. Norma cautions about implicit bias in the clinicians about what guides or organizes a family.8:50. Norma describes how to validate what the parent/family brings up at the beginning of family therapy to then be able to ask relevant family-focused assessment questions. She describes that the clinician can say "I want to really understand you as a family, how you think, how you came to be the family that you are. I need to understand deeply who you are and this is coming from a respectful place in me. And so I have some specific questions to ask about."10:35. Assessment subtopic #1: Parent/Caregiver Goals particularly around the spectrum of independence/autonomy to dependence. What are the hopes and dreams that parents have for their child(ren). Then partners have children and partners may bring the hopes and dreams of their parents/family of origin to their nuclear family. The question becomes "what is better?" 13:00. Norma explains how the parent/caregiver fears interfere with the respect that kids need to live their own lives and the way the kid wants to live their own life.15:15. Norma and Kathryn address how there is a generational shift in the younger generations who are empowered with their voice, they ask questions, and they express their opinions, and parents/caregivers need to respect that. Norma cautions that by continuing to setting limits on the kid and discouraging kids from their natural way of asking questions and expressing their opinion then they won't grow in their autonomy and self-responsibility for their life.16:30. Assessment subtopic #2: Discipline. Parenting with love, support and limits. Norma and Kathryn discuss the interrelatedness of discipline and the purpose/function of discipline. Discipline is to protect the kids; discipline is not just to limit/limitations on the child. Parenting with love, support and limits creates structure and security for the growing child and provides a model of guidance.21:50. Assessment subtopic #3: Communication. Norma explains how the parent needs to lead with listening and understanding why their child is sharing about a certain topic, and needs to hold their personal reaction or opinion for later. Kathryn and Norma have a discussion about the spectrum of direct and indirect communication.31:25. Assessment subtopic #4: Education. Clinicians need to ask and listen about the value on the continuum of academic/education/learning-focus versus socialization/extracurriculars/play/fun in a family. 34:55. Assessment subtopic #5: Family Structure (ie, Extended Family). Who is involved in this child's life and what are the values that those adults/extended family members emphasize with the child(ren)? Another aspect can be when parents see their own parents in the grandparent role be gentle with their children when the parent did not get that from their parent as a child. Stay tuned for Part Two of Norma's family assessment coming in mid-September.Thank you for listening! Kathryn de Bruin is an ICEEFT Certified EFT Trainer. The dialogue weaves through the textures of leadership and parenting, discovering how the tenacity we admire in boardrooms can also fortify the bonds with our children, and how self-compassion serves as a beacon through our most testing times. This episode doesn't just recount personal crossroads; it lays bare the transformative journey that follows. Through the act of journaling—a simple yet profound tool—we learn to 'get complete', fostering a deeper understanding with our children and ourselves, even amidst the stormy seas of adolescence.Yet, the odyssey doesn't end there; it's in the ruins of a family breakdown where the seeds of discovery are often sown. I share the solace found in the embrace of Parental Alienation Advocates(PAA), where self-work became the cornerstone of my healing. Our candid discussions traverse the rocky terrain of divorce, co-parenting, and facing false accusations, concluding that transparency and ongoing dialogue are the golden threads in the tapestry of rebuilding trust and understanding within our families.Don't forget to Subscribe to our YouTube Channel:https://www.youtube.com/@parentalalienationadvocatesIf you wish to connect with Lawrence Joss or any of the PA-A community members who have appeared as guests on the podcast:Email-      familydisappeared@gmail.comLinktree: https://linktr.ee/lawrencejoss(All links mentioned in the podcast are available in Linktree)Please donate to support PAA programs:https://www.paypal.com/donate?hosted_button_id=SDLTX8TBSZNXSWebsite: https://parentalalienationanonymous.com/PLEASE SUBMIT YOUR ARTWORK TO THE FAMILY HOPE PROJECT:https://pa-a.mykajabi.com/questionnaire“Family Disappeared” podcast survey:https://pa-a.mykajabi.com/podcast-assessmentA L L I S O N   G A R N E R www.bethoughtly.com Speaker, TedX Talk.  Author, "Think Possible" and “Unconditional”º Facebook  º Instagram  º LinkedIn º TikTokAllison's podcast "Unhooked":https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/unhooked/id1685954627This podcast is made possible by the Family Disappeared Team:Glaze Gonzales- Podcast ManagerAnna Johnson- Editor/Contributor/ActivistGeorgette Coppersmith - Editor/Contributor/ActivistKriztle Mesa - Social Media ManagerGen Rodelas-Kajabi ExpertKim Fernandez - Outreach CoordinatorConnect with Lawrence Joss:Website: https://parentalalienationanonymous.com/Email- familydisappeared@gmail.com

In this episode Kate and Deb discuss the integrative therapeutic approach called Internal Family Systems therapy and how to use it with mothering. The Internal Family Systems Model is an approach to individual psychotherapy developed by Richard C. Schwartz in the 1980s. It combines systems thinking with the view that the mind is made up of relatively discrete sub-personalities, each with its own unique viewpoint and qualities. By learning how different parts function as a system and how the overall system reacts to other systems and other people, people in therapy can often become better able to identify the roots of conflict, manage any complications arising, and achieve greater well-being. The IFS model has 5 basic assumptions: The human mind is subdivided into an unknown number of parts. Each person has a Self, and the Self should be the chief agent in coordinating the inner family. Parts engaging in non-extreme behavior are beneficial to the individual. There is no such thing as a “bad part.” Therapy aims to help parts discover their non-extreme roles. Personal growth and development leads to the development of the internal family. Interactions between parts become more complex, allowing for systems theory to be applied to the internal system. Reorganization of the internal system may lead to rapid changes in the roles of parts. Adjustments made to the internal system will result in changes to the external system and vice versa. Therefore, both the internal and external systems need to be adequately assessed. Disclosure, Deb has been studying IFS for about 4 years and attempted to give a very simple description of the practice so listeners can start to understand the concept. This practice has many terms that she did not go into such as; “managers, firefighters, blending, unburdening” and so on. This was intentional because Kate and Deb did not want to overwhelm the listener. There are many great resources to deepen your understanding of this model, but some great book recommendations include “The Sum of All Parts” and “No Bad Parts” both by Richard Schwartz. We are thrown into an existing system and put into a slot. Family systems dictate how you are expected to act, appear in public and how you are supposed to handle actions and emotions from everyone within your inner circle. The pressure to act accordingly and do only what will get you positive attention becomes a burden you can only carry for so long. Eventually, the byproduct of all this shame, whether from someone else or your own self, as you feel you can't live up to the standard set for you in this unhealthy system. What do you do to lose the feeling of worrying about what everyone wants, thinks, or expects from you? Learn what Joe had to do to teach himself to be ok with being able to survive and being seen in ways that weren't acceptable by his family system and move past all the guilt and shame he felt as a child for wanting things outside his place in the system. In this Episode: Learn to live a life outside of the role your family has set for you to live the life you want…one free of shame. Getting in touch with our anger and emotions Live within your own body…your own self.. without anxiety and fear. Learn that you weren't put on this earth to fill the holes of parents who can't fill them in their own lives. Integrate the parts of yourself in your new life that your family won't let you have Build a relationship with yourself…Love is an Inside Job! Learn to dismantle your family system's role to live and deal with the uncomfortable feelings of judgment and shame from your family system! Feel the relief and freedom that comes from releasing the bonds that have been placed on you by your family!

Understanding these things allows you to know yourself better and make changes if needed. Gaining this understanding can even lead to finding the source of your shame. I discovered Katarina "Kato" Wittich in Gwyneth Paltrow's documentary series “Sex, Love and Goop” episode five, where she guides a client through a Family Constellation session which allows them to understand and process family trauma. It was and remains one of the most powerful moments of television I've ever witnessed, so I was deeply honored when Kato agreed to be in conversation. In doing my research for this interview, I learned much about Kato's dedication to healing through practices that demand deep acceptance and reverence for the interwoven body-mind system. In this conversation, we discuss the Rosen and Family System techniques, the importance of touch, and how ancestral trauma informs our lives. We talk about the need to feel all our feelings and how critical it is to have someone that can allow us to be with those vibrations no matter how strong or seemingly negative. It was a meeting of spirits being in shared space with Katarina. I hope you will benefit from our musings. Katarina Wittich, known as ‘Kato', is a certified Rosen Method Practitioner, Conscious Dance facilitator, Yuen Practitioner, and facilitator for the group transformational modality called Family Constellations. She has had the great privilege to spend the last 25 years using her practices to help other humans voyage past the limitations that come from survival patterns created by trauma, toward wholeness and resilient self love.  Rosen Method is a form of somatic therapy which uses touch as well as verbal interaction in order to contact the contractions in our bodies which we have created in order get through trauma when we do not have enough support to remain open and flexible. In accessing these contractions in the body, we also access all the unconscious patterns that have been necessary to move through the world, but may no longer be useful, and instead now holding us back from living fully. Family Constellations work directly with the unconscious inheritance of survival patterns created to handle trauma by our ancestors. Often we are more susceptible to the difficult things that happen in our lives because of the epigenetic and family culture patterns once needed for survival of the family system, but now hindering us without our knowledge. Constellations are mysterious and incredibly powerful because they function through the group practice of resonance, in which perfect strangers with no knowledge of the client's issues or family system, will easily and accurately be able to represent the client's family members and ancestors, unveiling what was hidden and allowing flow back into the system.  Kato's Family Constellations work is currently featured in Episode Five of Gwyneth Paltrow's documentary series “Sex, Love and Goop”, available on Netflix. She is grateful to have had the opportunity to facilitate in the first mainstream television exposure for this profound and life changing work, in which you can witness the impossible wonder of our interconnectedness, unlimited by time or physicality. For more information on Kato's practices go to her website - RosenConstellations.com In the rest of her life, she is a screenwriter, director, painter, dancer and general lover of all things creative, embodied and human. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Your support is deeply appreciated! Marina Toledo is Founder of the Hellinger Institute, Canada and a leading facilitator and trainer in Family Constellations, offering workshops and trainings internationally both in-person and online. She founded the Hellinger Institute in 2011, based on a vision to open hearts and facilitate reconciliation and transgenerational healing worldwide. We discuss the philosophy of Family Constellations and how unprocessed ancestral trauma continues on in the subsequent generations. Marina shares insights into the relevance of exclusion in the family system, the concept of the “orders of love”, and how this healing method uses the phenomenological approach. We talk about the various levels of conscience - individual, family & spiritual, working with what Hellinger called the knowing field of individuals and groups, and the connection to Rupert Sheldrake and morphogenic fields. Marina shares her first experience with Constellations, and how we can in fact constellate any issue relevant to us, which may have no apparent connection to the family. She also covers the importance of working with interrupted movements towards our mother, why we sometimes need to say "no" as a practitioner, and challenging circumstances that may arise during a constellation. She also describes the skills needed to do this complex and deeply moving work well. Marina experienced her first constellation in 2002, and after years of participating in Constellations as a client in Europe and feeling significant shifts in her life, she felt called to bring this work to Canada where it was not well known. She began her training in 2009, and is certified by both Bert Hellinger and Sophie Hellinger from Hellinger Sciencia in Germany. In addition, she has studied with nine other trainers worldwide to gain an international perspective of this work, and she remains grateful to all of them. As a practitioner, Marina felt a calling to train others in this powerful methodology in order to further expand and extend the positive impact of this work. www.hellingerinstitute.comLiked what you heard?
