In this episode we answer emails from Mark and Eric.  We discuss managing finances through aging, dementia, and what happens when the family's primary money manager can't manage anymore. Then we challenge popular fear-based retirement thinking and explain why hoarding wealth can be a bad strategy for well-being and relationships.Links:Fairfax CASA Donation Page:  Donate - Fairfax CASAFather McKenna Center Donation Page:  Donate - Father McKenna CenterArticle On Fear- and Hoarding-Based Planning:  The Many Utilities of Retirement - Articles - Advisor PerspectivesA Better Approach To Spending In Retirement That Avoids Fear-Based Hoarding And Maximizes Well-Being:  RPR Episode 436 Illustrated: The Two Halves of Your Financial LifeBreathless Unedited AI-Bot Summary:What's the real plan if the person running the budget and investments can't do it anymore? Not “someday.” Not “we'll figure it out.” We talk through the unglamorous but essential side of retirement planning and DIY investing: continuity. That means account access, fewer scattered institutions, clear instructions, and a system your spouse can operate even if they'd rather be in the garden than staring at spreadsheets. We share practical steps that reduce chaos fast: consolidate accounts, use joint ownership where it makes sense, keep a password manager, and maintain a simple net worth sheet with a second tab that explains what to do and why. We also connect the dots to estate planning basics like power of attorney and why writing an investor policy statement can be a gift to the people who may need to step in later. Then we pivot to a deeper issue behind a lot of retirement advice: fear. We respond to an article that tries to justify hoarding as a retirement “utility,” and we argue that optimizing your life around fear of running out can turn money into a stand-in for therapy. Instead, we lay out what actually improves long-term well-being: stronger relationships, experiences that create flow, buying back your time, and charitable giving, all while still keeping your finances durable.Subscribe, share this with someone who manages the money in your family, and leave a review so more DIY investors can find the show. What would you put in your one-page continuity plan?Support the show

My Undesirable Friends: Part I—Last Air in Moscow (2024) is Russian-language American documentary film written and directed by Julia Loktev (with co-director Anna Nemzer). The film describes the effort to maintain press freedoms in Putin's Russia in the period leading up to the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. The documentary provides an intimate portrait of independent Russian journalists—mainly young women—who risk everything to pursue truth and accountability amidst escalating repression under the Putin regime. Filmed in late 2021 and early 2022, the documentary captures how the legal machinery of censorship, surveillance, and state-harassment converged to crush internal dissent and incapacitate civil society. It not only provides a profoundly disturbing account of what has occurred in Russia but also serves as a broader warning about the fragility of press freedoms and in a time of rising authoritarianism worldwide. Timestamps:0:00      Introduction2:45       How the film came about5:25       A primer on Russian censorship and repression15:15      “Foreign agents” and “undesirable organizations”23:32     Social marginalization through the creation of an enemies list 28:46     State persecution of TV Rain and other independent media 32:45     The manipulation of language36:30     Identifying the pivotal moment 43:36     How the film captures the elimination of press freedoms48:26     Courts and lawyers53:27     The Kremlin's public mobilization to support the war in Ukraine58:53     Independent journalism in exile1:02:17   Parallels to the United States under TrumpFurther reading:Chang, Justin, “‘My Undesirable Friends: Part I' Is a Staggering Portrait of Russian Journalists in Dissent,” New Yorker (Aug. 14, 2025)Edel, Anastasia, “Putin vs. the Press,” Foreign Policy (Oct. 3, 2025)Human Rights Watch, Russia's Legislative Minefield: Tripwires for Civil Society Since 2020 (2024)Human Rights Watch, Disrupted, Throttled, and Blocked State Censorship, Control, and Increasing Isolation of Internet Users in Russia (2025)Krupskiy, Maxim, “The Impact of Russia's ‘Foreign Agents' Legislation on Civil Society,” Fletcher Russia & Eurasia Program (2023)Troinovski, Anton & Safronova, Valeriya, “Russia Takes Censorship to New Extremes, Stifling War Coverage,” New York Times (May 18, 2022)Yablokov, Ilya & Gatov, Vasily, “Broadcasting through the (New) Iron Curtain: Practices, Challenges, and Legacies of Russia's Independent Media in Exile,” Journalism Studies (Feb. 11, 2025)Law on Film is created and produced by Jonathan Hafetz. Sofia Coppola explores the life and career of her friend of 30-plus years, fashion designer Marc Jacobs, in this intimate and fascinating documentary. If you like process and '90s nostalgia, this one's for you. In theaters. MY UNDESIRABLE FRIENDS: PART 1- LAST AIR IN MOSCOW. This was on both of our top-10 lists last year, so we're thrilled that it's now available for you to watch, as well. Julia Loktev's 5 1/2-hour doc follows a group of independent Russian TV journalists as Putin is invading Ukraine. They continue doing their jobs as they find themselves increasingly in danger. Streaming on MUBI. LITTLE DARLINGS: Was It Great, or Were You 8?: It's our favorite game, where we revisit movies from our childhood to determine whether they truly were great, or we just remember them fondly. This time it was Christy's turn, and she chose "Little Darlings," a film that seemed so racy to her in 1980. Tatum O'Neal and Kristy McNichol star as summer campers from opposite ends of the economic spectrum competing to see who can lose her virginity first. Armand Assante, Matt Dillon and a very young Cynthia Nixon co-star. Play along and let us know what you think! Thanks for sticking with us. We'll be back to a more normal schedule next week, including a LIVE spoiler chat about THE DRAMA. Join us at our YouTube channel at Noon Pacific time on Tuesday, April 14. Hope to see you then. On this week's Extra Serving, NRN editor in chief Sam Oches and executive editor Alicia Kelso discuss the latest restaurant industry news, including expert predictions for 2026, Chipotle's negative year, and the ongoing value wars. First up is 2026 predictions, specifically as it relates to the economy; Sam and Alicia both traveled to Florida last week for separate conferences where they heard more about 2026 expectations. The short version? It doesn't look great — but maybe it won't get worse? They break down the economic factors impacting restaurants and how operators can protect their businesses from yet another down year. Next up are Alicia's insights from the ICR event in Orlando, where she spoke with two brands who were looking to buck the trend in 2026: Jersey Mike's and TGI Friday's. She shares exclusive thoughts from her conversations and how exactly these two brands — which have been on different trajectories the past few years — plan to grow. Then Sam and Alicia discuss Chipotle, which announced that it expected 2025 to be its first-ever negative sales year on record. Could CEO Scott Boatwright be on the hot seat? The sudden departure of chief brand officer Chris Brandt suggests the company is ready to shake things up to get back to growth. Sam and Alicia explore what this could mean for Chipotle. Finally, in the extra serving portion of the episode, senior food and beverage editor Bret Thorn joins to discuss recent value offerings from around the restaurant industry, including major evolution at Taco Bell and Wendy's. He then shares a conversation he recently had with Chickie's & Pete's head chef Brendan Mullan. Sometimes, timing is everything. If Julia Loktev's 5 hour and 24-minute documentary masterpiece “My Undesirable Friends: Part 1 — Last Air in Moscow” can be boiled down to its essence, it may be that, often in life, there is a “before” and an “after,” and nothing can possibly prepare you for what comes after. In this case, the event that changes everything for the courageous generation of Russian journalists that came of age under Vladimir Putin's reign is the Russian leader's cataclysmic invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022.   Julia and journalist / film participant Ksenia Mironova join Ken on “Top Docs” to discuss the vibrant world of independent journalism that existed in Russia in the period prior to the invasion, and the subsequent crackdown that ended it all. Filming Ksenia and a cohort of women journalists in the months leading up the invasion with her iPhone, Julia captures an intimate, inspiring world of hope, youthful ambition and a deep commitment to reporting the truth in a country where government propaganda is one of Putin's most powerful weapons of control. Bearing witness, first as the government brands news outlets, NGOs and individual journalists as foreign agents, and then through instances of arrest and imprisonment (including Ksenia's fiancé), Julia finds herself filming as the clock strikes midnight on any semblance of freedom of the press in Russia. By the end of Part 1, all the film's participants are forced to flee the country. Timing may be everything, but the story never ends. Part 2 on “The Exiles” is already underway.   Hidden Gems: Julia: “Four Daughters”, “July Rain” by Ksenia: “Holocaust: Is That Wallpaper Paste?”   Follow: @juliaofelbow and @my_undesirable_friends on Instagram @topdocspod on Instagram and X

Once thought to be solely the stuff of science fiction, UAPs (UFOs) are very real to millions around the world. In 2021, the US Government confirmed that leaked UAP video was legitimate. Ever since, there has been an explosion of interest in the topic. Yet, we are no closer to understanding UAPs, where they come from, or who/what is behind the phenomenon. In this new series, we look to bridge the gap between the past and present by looking at some of the most important UAP sightings in history and determining whether the question of "are we alone in the universe?" might have already been answered. In this inaugural/introductory episode, Dave, Tunney, and DJ discuss many aspects of the present surge in UAP interest, popularity, and curiosity. How did a topic so undesirable to discuss become one of the most talked-about subjects in the world, with major stories seemingly breaking every week? The guys explore this and much more, including watershed moments like the 2017 New York Times article that changed everything, the formation of Skywatcher, more eye-opening videos shot off the Southern California coast in the past couple of years, and whistleblowers coming forward to make you question everything you thought you knew about our reality. UAPs are an undeniable truth. Who, or what, is behind this phenomenon is the 64 trillion-dollar question. So tune in to this first Episode of Unidentified History to find out where we are going, where we have been....and why Tunney hates windchimes? Ep. 300: Julia Loktev on My Undesirable Friends: Part I—Last Air in Moscow Welcome to The Last Thing I Saw, with your host, Nicolas Rapold. Last October I interviewed the filmmaker Julia Loktev during the New York Film Festival about her latest work, My Undesirable Friends: Part I—Last Air in Moscow. This week her film has its international premiere at the Berlinale. It's about independent journalists in Russia before and after the start of Putin's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. When I spoke to Loktev last fall, I asked about how skillfully the five-hour-plus movie is put together, and she in turn explained how the situation in Russia grew even worse with the invasion. Since then, Trump's election in the United States and his radical re-shaping of the government have created an additional context for the film, in which Loktev's descriptions of Russia's strategies of suppression and deception start to sound even more like a frightening warning. Anybody need an attitude lift? Yes, lift your attitude. One, two, three, lift. So much of our progress has to do with our attitude, and it's easy to get pushed down by the three modes of material nature. The way to rise above it is by chanting Hare Kṛṣṇa. And I'm going to repeat the first verse that came from the Antya Līlā, Caitanya-caritāmṛta, written by Kṛṣṇadāsa Kavirāja Gosvāmī. Simply by chanting The Holy Name of Lord Kṛṣṇa, one can be freed from all undesirable habits. Simply by chanting The Holy Name of Lord Kṛṣṇa, one can be freed from all undesirable habits. That's what everybody's talking about and preparing for: how can I overcome undesirable habits? There are millions of self-help books, courses, psychology majors, everything. How can I overcome undesirable habits? But this one process, chanting Hare Kṛṣṇa is the way to rise above it. Correct. Who can prove it with śāstra? Give me a Sanskrit verse. Why does it work? Because we're not blind followers. We need evidence. In 1945, 20-year-old Anthony Acevedo was held in captivity with other American soldiers inside a Nazi concentration camp called Berga. There, the soldiers were used as slave laborers, building tunnels for underground fuel factories. It was during this time that the Mexican-American medic kept a secret diary and documented the horrors he witnessed inside the camp.Acevedo held on to his war diary until 2010, when he donated it to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum (USHMM) in Washington, D.C. That same year, he registered as a Holocaust survivor with the museum—the first and only Mexican-American to do so.This episode originally aired in May 2018.Follow us on TikTok and YouTube. Subscribe to our newsletter by going to the top of our homepage.
