Big followings don't guarantee sales. Connection does. Because it's not about how many people see your content—it's about how many feel something from it. Brooke Adams joins me to break down the real difference between having an audience and building a community. We dig into what keeps people around, how to create belonging (without burning out), and what makes someone go from casual follower to repeat client. If your audience isn't converting like you expected, this might be the shift you've been missing. In this episode of the podcast, we talk about: The difference between followers and community What small, connected audiences do better than big ones How strong communities drive sustainable sales Why some communities fizzle—and how to revive them Building community without burning out …And More!   This Episode Was Made Possible By: Riverside All-in-One Podcast & Video Platform Visit Riverside and use the code DREA to get 15% off any Riverside individual plan. Celluloid Pudding: Movies. Film. Discussions. Laughter. History. Carrying on.

Hello beautiful plants and people! Please join us for a deep dive discussion of the 1978 incarnation of Invasion of the Body Snatchers. Relevant? Yes. To YOUR life? Yes. This film holds its own oh so many decades later, even when compared to the frightfully lovely original 1956 film adaptation of the book. It is about losing your power, agency, and identity in a world gone mad. Sure there is an alien invasion and a resident expert, and a pop psychologist villain (played by a smooth 70s Leonard Nimoy); and yes, a fetching Brooke Adams as the capable botanist, and Donald Sutherland as a dishy Health inspector...but there are layers and layers here. Please join us for some deep thoughts and deep laughter. Bonus: here's a link for the 1956 original on Internet Archives - a wonderful and FREE resource you should know about ! Take care of one another!https://archive.org/details/invasionofthebodysnatchers1956_201911

I love reviewing films that have been on my list for ages but haven't watched yet. This was such a great film that I took me way too long watch. Over the past few years this has become a theme, so much that I made (and will add to) another list on Letterboxd about films I was obsessed with on a late viewing. This has now joined the ranks of that list. Gas Food Lodging, directed by Allison Anders is a great drama and coming of age film set in the Southwest. The performances by Fairuza Balk and Ione Skye need to be studied and talked about more. I get into the INCREDIBLE fashion that stemmed from the late 80s, why J. Mascis is great at composing a movie score, and how I loved the end of this story.Off-topic rants include: fashion and music categorization and why you can think of me as the clerk behind the video rental counter  ---Get BONUS episodes on 90s TV and culture (Freaks & Geeks, My So Called Life, Buffy, 90s culture documentaries, and more...) and to support the show join the  Patreon! Host: Lauren @lauren_melanieFind more Fashion Grunge on LinktreeJoin me on Substack:  The Lo Down: a Fashion Grunge Blog/newsletter☕️ Support Fashion Grunge on Buy Me a Coffee: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/fashiongrunge

Welcome to Director Watch! On this AwardsWatch podcast, co-hosts Ryan McQuade and Jay Ledbetter attempt to breakdown, analyze, and ultimately, get inside the mind of some of cinema's greatest auteurs. In doing so, they will look at their filmographies, explore what drives them artistically and what makes their decision making process so fascinating. Add in a few silly tangents and a fun game at the end of the episode and you've got yourself a podcast we truly hope you love. On episode 60 of the Director Watch Podcast, the boys are joined by AwardsWatch Associate Editor Sophia Ciminello to discuss the next film in their Terrence Malick series, Days of Heaven (1978). Five years after delivering one of the best debut films of all time, Terrence Malick returned with an essential piece of art within his filmography, and one of the best films of the 1970s, Days of Heaven. Shot mostly in Alberta, Canada, Malick's epic follows lovers who travel to the Texas Panhandle for work harvesting crops for a wealthy grain farmer, only for the three of them to turn into a love triangle of biblical, spiritual proportions. While the shoot and edit of the film ran so long that additional editors and crew members had to be added to the film in order to get the film to the finish line, Malick was able to deliver a mesmerizing, lyrical cautionary tale about love, lust, greed, anger, desire, and finding your sense of freedom in a new world forming around. In other words, a masterpiece. Ryan, Jay, and Sophia breakdown their relationship with the film, the beautiful house built by Jack Fisk, the logistics of the locus scene, the film's incredible performances led by Richard Gere, Sam Shepard, and Brooke Adams, the troubled production of the film, the director's relationship with water, the insightful narration, if Malick's career relates to any other modern director, and how the film's ending full encapsulates all the themes suggested or mentioned throughout the film. You can listen to the Director Watch Podcast wherever you stream podcasts, from iTunes, iHeartRadio, Soundcloud, Stitcher, Spotify, Audible, Amazon Music and more. This podcast runs 2h16m. The guys will be back next week to continue their series on the films of Terrence Malick with a review of his next film, The Thin Red Line. You can rent it via iTunes and Amazon Prime rental in preparation for the next episode of Director Watch. Till then, let's get into it. Drusilla and Josh honor the late, great Donald Sutherland in The Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978). From wiki: “Invasion of the Body Snatchers is a 1978 American science-fiction horror film[1] directed by Philip Kaufman, and starring Donald Sutherland, Brooke Adams, Veronica Cartwright, Jeff Goldblum, and Leonard Nimoy. Released on December 22, 1978, it is based on the 1955 novel The Body Snatchers by Jack Finney. The novel was previously adapted into the 1956 film of the same name. The plot involves a San Francisco health inspector and his colleague who over the course of a few days discover that humans are being replaced by alien duplicates; each is a perfect biological clone of the person replaced, but devoid of empathy and humanity.”But also: House of Mortal Sin, Night Watch, The Amityville Horror, House of Psychotic Women, Identikit, MASH, Pauline Kael, sequels, The Eyes of Laura Mars, Suspiria, and more!NEXT WEEK: The Uninvited (1944)  Follow them across the internet:Bloodhaus: https://www.bloodhauspod.com/https://twitter.com/BloodhausPodhttps://www.instagram.com/bloodhauspod/Drusilla Adeline:https://www.sisterhydedesign.com/https://letterboxd.com/sisterhyde/ Joshua Conkelhttps://www.joshuaconkel.com/https://www.instagram.com/joshua_conkel/https://letterboxd.com/JoshuaConkel/

Vineyard Folk by Tamara Weiss & Amanda Benchley The true soul of Martha's Vineyard, captured through the eyes of the talented artists and artisans who live there.     Vineyard Folk leads us on an intimate journey into the lives and inspirational places of some of the many talented artists who have always made up the larger community of Martha's Vineyard. The island, located just seven miles off the coast of Cape Cod, has a long history as geographic muse: Lillian Hellman and William Styron wrote overlooking the Vineyard Haven harbor, and Thomas Hart Benton—whose influence is still felt in island painters today—depicted the stone walls and winding roads of what is known as “up-island” more than a hundred years ago.  Now, a new generation continues to build on these creative legacies, inspired by the island's ever-changing light, endless beaches, historic towns, and rolling fields. Vineyard Folk features painters, potters, poets, musicians, and actors, among many others, and the unique ways they work, live, and play.  Above all, Vineyard Folk is a love letter to a remarkable island community. With personal interviews and candid photography, it is a collage of creativity, resilience, and hope. We celebrate these artists captured at this golden moment of time that may not last forever. On this episode you will meet some of the artists featured in the book- Brooke Adams, Brad Silberling, Michael Johnson, Juli Vanderhoop, Elizabeth Ceceil and author Tamara Weiss. This week on Fabulous Film and Friends, we're concluding our look into the paranoid, dystopian lens of 70's sci-fi by discussing three of the four versions of Invasion of the Body Snatchers. We're talking the 1956 version directed by Don Siegel and starring Kevin McCarthy, Dana Wynter, King Donovan, Carolyn Jones, Larry Gates and Sam Peckinpah in a cameo, comparing it to the 1978 version starring Donald Sutherland, Brooke Adams, Jeff Goldblum, Veronica Cartwright, and Leonard Nimoy along with both Don Siegel and Kevin McCarthy in cameos, as well as the 1993 version called Body Snatchers directed by Abel Ferrara and starring Gabrielle Anwar, Terry Kinney, Meg Tilley, Christine Elise, Billy Wirth, R. Lee Ermey and Forest Whitaker.  My guests this week are series regulars Roseanne Caputi, David Johnson and George Young, and of course, the inimitable Gordon Alex Robertson.  Before we harvest the crop of pod people,  the synopses: All three films center around the idea that an alien species has invaded our planet and has replaced members of our community with look-alikes sprung from plant-like pods. The key  difference in the pod people is that their personalities are devoid of emotion. Which Body Snatchers film wins the war? Find out!

Friend of the show Kristen Halbert from Forces of Geek returns this week! First, Evan, Megan, and Dave review the gross and glacially-paced Vasilis Katsoupis film INSIDE (3:28), which stars Willem Dafoe as an art thief who gets trapped inside a high-tech Manhattan penthouse and struggles to maintain his sanity as he fights to survive. Next, Kristen, Megan, and Dave cover THE BLACKENING (20:37), a horror comedy Kristen has been wanting to discuss with us for months. Professional discretion and acting in the best interest of the child affords school district officials options to unravel the snags created by their own protocols and policies webs. What happens when a school district doubles down behind flawed policies? What recourse exists for parents? In this episode, Doc shares an authentic case study from his special education legal issues course. Would you ban a kindergarten student with epilepsy from attending school because of her doctor-prescribed CBD oil? THE CASE (The following is copied from Rogoway Law Group, 2018). “Brooke Adams is a five-year-old girl diagnosed with Dravet Syndrome, a rare and severe form of epilepsy. Brooke currently uses medicinal cannabis-derived CBD oil to significantly reduce the frequency of seizures and medicinal cannabis-derived THC oil as an emergency medication to quickly stop seizures once they start. Brooke obtains both oils pursuant to a valid recommendation from a licensed physician. The Rincon Valley Union School District refused to place Brooke on a District campus because it alleged that her medication is not permitted on a school campus or school bus under both state and federal law; instead, in April 2018, the District offered to Brooke an individualized educational program (“IEP”) that included only one (1) hour of home-based schooling each day.” SPECIAL EDUCATION DUE PROCESS HEARING. Under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (“IDEA”), schools are required to ensure that all children with disabilities have access to a free appropriate public education (“FAPE”) that emphasizes special education and related services designed to meet the child's unique needs. When a parent believes that their child has been denied FAPE (in this case, the parents believed the school district was required to educate Brooke with her peers), they can pursue what is known as a “due process hearing” that compels the state's department of education to investigate and then rule on findings of whether the school district violated the students procedural rights, failed to provide FAPE, and also the remedy. The special education due process hearing essentially is a trial including lay and expert witnesses, exhibits, testimony, and briefs filed by the parties. Schools are always represented by an attorney, often via their errors and omissions insurance policy. Parents can retain an attorney or represent themselves. IS CBD OIL ILLEGAL IN SCHOOLS? This varies from state to state, but CBD oil is typically not illegal in schools. However, schools can create policies that ban CBD oil - including CBD oil prescribed by a physician. REASONS WHY DISTRICTS BAN CBD OIL. CBD oil is a slippery slope as it cannot, per federal law, contain more than .3 percent THC (tetrahydrocannabinol). Anything with more THC is considered a schedule 1 drug by the Drug Enforcement Administration and is federally illegal. CBD oil is not sold through typical state-regulated pharmacies. The purity and level of THC in the product is regulated by the manufacturers and sellers, not the FDA. The methods for measuring the level of THC might not be uniform across manufacturers. School staff can test if CBD oil contains THC, but they wouldn't be able to determine the percentage of CBD. A school nurse, or designee, administering CBD oil that somehow contained more than .3 THC would be, in fact, committing a schedule 1 federal drug offense! A school nurse could lose his license! WHY IS THIS A PROBLEM? The Department of Education at the state level is unwilling to give clear guidance on the administration of CBD oil prescribed by a doctor. Instead, state agencies offer vague guidance and direct districts to consult their own legal counsel to inform a stance on the matter. DISCRETION AND ACTING IN THE BEST INTEREST. School officials had options to remedy this situation before it landed on the judge's desk. One course of action would have been to modify the school's board of education policy to permit the administration of CBD oil with a doctor's order. Another plan might have involved working with the manufacturer of the CBD oil to become better informed, and confident in, the monitoring for THC in the end product. Ultimately, the state should have made a clear ruling affirming the use of CBD oil in school and to hold harmless staff for administration of CBD oil that might contain trace amounts of THC. What would you have done? RULING. The judge ruled that Rincon Valley Union School District had denied 5-year-old Brooke Adams a “free and appropriate public education” in the “least restrictive setting” — which federal special education law requires.
