“Some fellas are afraid of nothing, and some fellas are afraid of getting a clatter. And some fellas are not afraid until they get a clatter! Then they realise.” We're back with Part 2 of If Walls Could Talk, a special double episode of The Rocky Road with Philip Sutcliffe from Crumlin Boxing Club. Plug the imagination back in and let Sucko guide you around one of Ireland's most successful schools of sport. There are stories about Crumlin fighters like Dean Byrne and Jamie Kavanagh, and a few about Katie Taylor who regularly dropped in for sparring down through the years. Philip tells us about his two Olympic Games as a young boxer, Moscow 1980 and Los Angeles 1984 (with a mix-up about his admittedly elegant green team blazer thrown in) and telling The Greates, Muhammad Ali, where to go – in true Dublin fashion – when the heavyweight icon called him a ‘leprechaun' and asked him to sit on his lap. Conor McGregor, perhaps Crumlin's most famous pupil, looms large over the building and you can hear Sutcliffe's pride when speaking about his achievements in the Octagon and even in the ring. It's not all about the superstar names though, and Philip is most animated when speaking about the boxing family, or when boxing breaks your heart when talented young fighters go down the wrong road towards crime and drugs. Luckily, more are saved than are lost, a source of obvious pride for the boxing people of Ireland. Finally, Crumlin BC has been a leader in the rolling-out of the High Five Boxing Academy for those with additional needs and, as ever, Sutcliffe is centrally involved, encouraging and cajoling and bringing out the best in people. We've something different this week as we kick off a new feature called ‘If Walls Could Talk'. On one of my visits to the boxing gym it struck me that I'd love to hear the stories behind the pictures and headlines that are stuck on the wall. It applies to most gyms in the country, so where better to start than in the capital's Crumlin boxing club with the storyteller that is Phil Sutcliffe. They're all here, from novices to world champions, volunteers to Olympic gold medallists. We discuss family and fighters, those still punching and those who are no longer with us. Some of the fighters have gone down the wrong road over the years, gotten involved in gangs, while others are soldiers, prison officers and Gardai. Many are massive names in their own separate fields – such as Daniel Day Lewis, who trained here to prepare for The Boxer in the 90s, or MMA's Conor McGregor who grew up fighting out of the place and is still a frequent visitor. ‘So many names', says Phil, who says he'd ‘only take a bullet for Madonna if she paid me enough'! This is Part 1 of If Walls Could Talk, from Crumlin Boxing Club. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
As you may remember, our first season explored the history of three African American neighborhoods in Cincinnati. We explored the times when those neighborhoods were thriving — and when disinvestment instigated many of the socio-economic challenges these communities continue to face today. But one piece we didn't explore was how institutional investors have contributed to these communities' affordability and housing challenges. After we aired the season, Dr. Hayden Shelby, an Assistant Professor of Planning at the University of Cincinnati, reached out saying she was teaching a class on housing systems and institutional investors — and, instead of papers, she was asking her students to make a podcast. As part of Urbanist Media — the community preservation not-for-profit that produces Urban Roots — we've been helping Dr. Shelby, guiding her and her students to develop a new podcast, If Walls Could Talk. In this conversation, we sat down with Dr. Hayden Shelby to learn more about the issue of institutional investors broadly and how they specifically operate in Cincinnati. Dr. Shelby and her class will be hosting two community conversations about institutional investors (details below). We hope as many people as possible in Cincinnati take part in these conversations — it's time to collectively create the solutions Cinci neighborhoods need to curb the negative impact of institutional investors and allow these communities to, once again, thrive. In-Person: Saturday, November 12th from 9-1 AM at the University of Cincinnati's College of Design, Architecture, Art and Planning Building. Zoom: Friday, November 18th from 2-4 PM on Zoom (register via link or email shelbyhm@uc.edu)

Les, Kurt, and Jason return after a few weeks off, and they have a lot to catch up on, Les was recognized for his work whilst nude! Kurt heard back from the PornHub math teacher (he actually heard back months ago, but didn't check Twitter)! Jason sent a friend a neon fruit sign! Then, they dive right into Lifetime's If Walls Could Talk featuring a house that may be haunted by someone not terribly concerned with the drought. The guys were super excited to see the movie since it features friend-of-the-pod Meredith Thomas doing fantastic nosy neighbor work here (and concerned neighbor, too). Meredith, of course, has fantastic outfits (teaching Kurt about Laura Petrie). Jason, on the other hand, was so concerned about the casket carrying in the movie that he actually found a blog with tips on how to carry one! If this house is haunted, Kurt will not be living there because he does not have the time, he's too busy watching Amityville in Space! Fail, fail Again, fail better - Samuel Beckett Welcome to the show notes for Episode 46 of Sally’s Performing Arts Lab Podcast. Chris O’Rourke, playwright, director, Irishman and critic joins me from Dublin, Ireland on episode 46 of SallyPAL. To hear his authentic (and very appealing) Irish brogue, you need to find the episode on your favorite podcast platform. Just type in SallyPAL and look for Episode 46. I’m podcast host, Sally Adams. I talk to people about creating original work for a live audience. Send an email to me anytime by sending to Sally@sallypal.com. Share your story with me and let me know about a creator you’d like me to interview. Copyright UpdateI want to do a little update on the copyright information I shared in the last blog and podcast when I told you all copyrighted material from 1923 would be entering the public domain this year after a 20 year wait for Federal term extensions. That actually happened at the stroke of midnight on January 1, 2019. Today, January 10, 2019, I heard an episode of the radio show 1A with host Joshua Johnson on WAMU (the show is on a lot of NPR stations as well as the Internet). Husband and wife copyright experts James Boyle and Jennifer Jenkins spend an enlightening hour reviewing what the copyright laws mean for creative people. I highly recommend checking out Joshua Johnson’s January 10 episode of 1A concerning copyright law. I think it will clarify a lot of what we face as creators in the digital age from “fair use” to Creative Commons. They also discuss tools available to resolve the plagiarizing of protected works. Knowledge is power. Podcast Guest Chris O’RourkeChris O’Rourke is a playwright, director, drama coach and critic currently living in Dublin, Ireland. Until July, 2016 Chris was the National Theatre Critic for Examiner.com. He now reviews performances for The Arts Review. I think Chris has reviewed nearly every live play in Ireland. I get his reviews in my email box every week and read them not just because I’m interested in the Irish theatre scene (I wouldn’t be if it wasn’t for Chris). I read his reviews from TheArtsReview.com because they are a master class in what makes a live show worth seeing. Anyone producing live theatre needs to read Chris’ insightful and intelligent journalism. You can do that by visiting the website. Chris reviews and writes for TheArtsReview.com. Check it out. Chris O’Rourke is also the artistic director of the award-winning Everything is Liminal and Unknown Theatre troupes specializing in originating works with young people from high risk backgrounds. Unknown Theatre’s groundbreaking production, “If Walls Could Talk” played at The 2017 Edinburgh Fringe Festival to rave reviews. I hope you’ll click the podcast link at the top of this blog entry to enjoy episode 46 with Chris O’Rourke. I also invite you to go to your favorite podcast provider and download past episodes. There are dozens of wonderful conversations with people creating original work in the world of performance right now. I interview choreographers, playwrights, musicians, scholars, designers, technicians and performers from stages all over the world. Every interview includes a section titled Concise Advice from the Interview that highlights the best nuggets of wisdom, as well as Words of Wisdom from George, a brief bit of insight from my husband, the coolest guy on the planet. Concise Advice from the Interview for Episode 46 includes five bits of advice from Critic and Playwright, Chris O’Rourke: 5 Be honest in your criticism. As long as there’s no vindictiveness you can be share what you see. 4 When working with young people, do work that is relevant to their lives. 3 It’s important to tell stories of people whose voices aren’t ordinarily heard. 2 If you’re working with young people, let them have fun, find their voices, and express themselves. 1 Respect your audience by keeping them engaged and entertained. Thank you for reading, following, sharing, subscribing, reviewing, joining, & thank you for listening to the podcast. If you’re downloading and listening on your drive to work, or reading the blog after hours, let me know you’re out there. Shared storytelling is the most important thing we do as a culture. That’s why I encourage you to share your stories because you’re the only one with your particular point of view. And SallyPAL is here with resources, encouragement, and a growing community of storytellers. All the stories ever expressed once lived only in someone’s imagination.
