Cork have ticked every box so far this year, building up significant momentum on their way to a first league title since 1998.They overwhelmed Tipp in the decider on Leeside, bringing their total of green flags in the last three games to 13, which included six up in Ennis where they head this Sunday. The harsh reality is that league and championship are very different animals and All-Ireland champions Clare will unleash hell on Easter Sunday after getting hammered last month. In our hurling special, we discuss the latest Cork-Clare showdown in detail with Denis Hurley, John Horgan and Jack McKay, and they offer their verdicts on the round-robin series while selecting their top three to qualify from Munster. Can Brian Hayes build on his sensational spring form? Remember he wasn't in the starting line-up for the first round this time last year in Waterford. Is Darragh Fitzgibbon's best position at 11 or will we see him back in midfield again over the coming weeks?Cork's backs have been mean and tight lately and that improved defensive effort will be integral to bridging the gap to 2005, or even reach a first Munster final since 2018.Our guests also discuss their personal Munster championship highlights over the years, the games and goals that stand out.Barry O'Mahony joins us to preview Cork v Kerry in SuperValu Páirc Uí Chaoimh. The Kingdom were pushed all the way by John Cleary's side in their last two meetings but the new rules suited Kerry's attack in their Division 1 league victory.Rory Noonan reports from the league finals over the weekend, which saw Cork lose to Galway in football but win the camogie crown for the first time since 2013. Éamonn Murphy is joined by Barry O'Mahony and Denis Hurley to discuss all the latest Cork GAA news on and off the field. This week we pay tribute to Ray Ryan to former Cork hurler, Glanmire footballer and Sars legend, who won four counties and guided their U21s to glory. His death shocked everyone on Leeside but the GAA community rallied around his family and club. His brother Pat spoke superbly at his funeral and carried himself with his customary class as he managed the Cork hurlers on Saturday night to a fine victory over Kilkenny. We break down the Rebels' performance at SuperValu Páirc Uí Chaoimh with rookie forward Diarmuid 'Duds' Healy shooting the lights out to the tune of 1-5. There's still a lot of play for over the last couple of rounds, though wins over Clare and Galway would send Cork into the league final. The Cork footballers suffered a 14-point hammering at the hands of Roscommon, which now makes relegation a concern and rules out promotion once more.It was a disappointing night in the Páirc in every sense as a massive portion of the fans opted to depart after the hurling and more again at half-time when John Cleary's side were under pressure.Closer to home the leagues threw in over the weekend as we finally got a break from the wet weather and Steven Sherlock caught the eye for St Finbarr's, firing 0-15 away to Cill na Martra.Plus Celtic and Cork City line up glamour friendly for July in the Páirc, with a trophy made by Gerald McCarthy up for grabs...You can listen to the Echo Sport Podcast every week wherever you get your podcasts or on www.echolive.ie/podcast Hosted on Acast. All-Ireland winners Paul Murphy and James Skehill are back to review a dramatic weekend in the National Hurling League. On a week where Clare lost their Hurler of the Year Shane O'Donnell for the season, the Banner rallied to beat their rivals Limerick at the Gaelic Grounds. Diarmuid Healy seized his chance for Cork in their victory over Kilkenny on Leeside, while Galway made it three wins in-a-row by overcoming Wexford. Offaly remain top of the pile in Division One B, Antrim's late equalising goal was a blow for Carlow, while Waterford finished strongly to beat Dublin at Walsh Park. That included Seán Twomey, who started the Munster championship game in Waterford in 2024, and Conor Cahalane, who has significant championship experience.Could a dark horse come into the set-up between here and the provincial campaign, like Power last summer? Jack Leahy perhaps, given his excellent form with UL on the back of a county title for Imokilly?A number of Rebels are involved in the Fitzgibbon Cup semi-final with UCC and MTU Cork hoping to set up an all-Leeside final. We preview their chances against DCU and UL.The Cork footballers are back in league action at home to Westmeath. They'd a thrilling victory over Meath in the opener but lost on the road to Down in their second outing, a significant blow to their promotion hopes. They've proved adept at kicking two-pointers but their defence will need to be tighter as they build for championship. In the Cork U21 club championships, the new rules helped serve up some extremely entertaining games. On the camogie front, there was more heartbreak for UCC. Since capturing a 32nd Ashbourne Cup in 2003 they've now lost nine finals. The Cork ladies footballers made it two wins from three league games as they bid to escape from Division 2. Joe Carroll's charges hit Tipp for three goals with the return of Erika O'Shea from Aussie Rules a major boost for the Rebels. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

The Echo Sport Podcast is back for a third season to cover every puck of a sliotar and bounce of a football in Cork GAA.The league threw in up in Wexford and the interest in the Cork hurlers is as strong as ever, the electric summer of 2024 still fresh in the memory, though the pain of that All-Ireland final loss to Clare still hasn't abated. The Rebels have been hit and miss in the league in the modern era and haven't lifted the trophy since 1998. Is it important to bridge that gap? Limerick and Clare have secured doubles in recent years. The footballers beat Meath in what was a crunch clash in promotion terms. It ended their awful run of failing to win a first-round Division 2 fixture. There was a winter exodus from the panel which cranked up the pressure on John Cleary and his selectors. With some new faces and embracing the new rules, the Rebels hit 2-19.UCC and MTU Cork are off to impressive starts in the Fitzgibbon Cup. Are either of them in contention to collect the Fitz? Both sides are into the knockout phase with a game to spare with the likes of Ben Cunningham, Brian Keating, Diarmuid Healy and Alan Connolly on song.In the Harty Cup, the AG got to a first semi-final in 29 years, despite having a very young team. It was a remarkable run from the Mon, considering the bulk of their team is underage again next season. On the Corn Uí Mhuirí front, Hamilton High School from Bandon were the last Cork school standing but breaking the Kerry monopoly proved impossible. Críost Rí were the last from Leeside to manage that feat, way back in 2011.You can listen to the Echo Sport Podcast every week wherever you get your podcasts or on www.echolive.ie/podcast/ Hosted on Acast. With music comes great power are the wise words of Cork Opera House CEO Eibhlín Gleeson who gives a behind the scenes insight to the intricate, creative world of entertainment programming. The Cork Opera House is an iconic landmark Leeside with over 160 years in operation, Eileen & the creative crew are planning a bigger & better programme to celebrate another milestone.Eileen comes from a very creative background, coming from a family of musicians & being a musician herself, knew a career in music was a must. She started her creative journey studying music in UCC where during her role in the Students Union she got her first taste of production & music programming when she established the first music week on campus showcasing the talented array of musicians in the university. That early role paved the way for a career in music & entertainment programming. Her first role in the industry began with the INEC in Killarney working in marketing, the box office & gaining experience into the business of entertainment programming. This led to other succession to working in Edinburgh on the famous Fringe Festival amongst others, directing & programming entertainment from music to comedy & theatre. A return home however led to a role as CEO of the Chamber Choir of Ireland using valuable lessons from previous roles. However one of the most exciting stories we hear about Eibhlín's career path was a year spent in Washington DC working at the infamous Kennedy Center on a fellowship programme working with a $200 million budget. One of the highlights of the experience was having the opportunity to bring the Chamber Choir of Ireland to the White where they sang for the Obama's on St.Patrick's Day.After a year Eibhlín returned to Ireland to use her skills from the US to set up her own company supporting artists. The Opera House happened to be one of her clients &when a job opportunity opened, she took a role as general manager before becoming CEO where she remains today. It's an exciting insight to the entertainment industry, the tough work that goes on behind the scenes to bring an array of entertainment to audiences. Hosted on Acast. It's official, Kerry are now the bookies favourites and after their historic 22-point demolition of Cork in the Munster final, Sam is there for the taking. On this week's Throw-In podcast, Tomás Ó'Sé joins Will Slattery and Dermot Crowe and he tells the lads just how far the Kingdom really can go believing that Dublin are the most vulnerable they've been in ten years. “Kerry are favourites,” he admits. “They're working like animals all around the pitch. I think they have an edge, the harder edge this year definitely.” The panel also rate Mayo's chances in the semi-final after their 11-point turn-around in the Connacht final while Kerry face the winner of Tyrone v Monaghan in next weekend's Ulster final. Meanwhile, in the hurling, John Mullane was on the show celebrating Waterford's win over Galway and he reckons they will have the speed to topple Tipperary in the quarter-finals. On the other side of the draw, Cork's win over Clare sees them meet Dublin and Mullane thinks the Rebels have every chance to go far. “Something is definitely happening down Leeside,” says Mullane. “I wouldn't like to be playing them and I think they'll win at the weekend and that'll put them in a semi-final and - a bit like Waterford - momentum will be with them and they seem to be building down there.” Listen and follow the Throw-In on Apple Podcasts or Spotify, with new episodes every Monday throughout the Championship. Good Morning, RVA!
Good morning, RVA: 927 • 29; more on the shameful police violence; and a big, leafy deal

Good Morning, RVA!

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 3, 2020

Good morning, RVA! It’s 75 °F, and today you should expect super hot highs in the 90s—we’ve even got a heat advisory in effect until 8:00 PM. The heat index could reach as high as 109 °F, and that means you probably should stay inside if at all possible.Water coolerAs of this morning, the Virginia Department of Health reports 927↗️ new positive cases of the coronavirus in the Commonwealthand 29↗️ new deaths as a result of the virus. VDH reports 138↗️ new cases in and around Richmond (Chesterfield: 40, Henrico: 68, and Richmond: 30). Since this pandemic began, 326 people have died in the Richmond region. Just yesterday, the seven-day average of new cases in Virginia hit 1,012—the first time it’s been over 1,000 since August 13th. Percent positivity has also started to trend upward in the Commonwealth, and, at 7.7%, is now at its highest level since around June 8th. Statewide numbers are whatever, and it’s maybe more helpful to look at percent positive in the Central Region—which is bigger than just Richmond, Henrico, and Chesterfield, but still smaller than the entire state. Turns out percent positivity for the Central Region is…7.8% and that’s the highest it’s been since August 9th. What does this all mean? Keep working from home if possible, keep your mask on, and keep your distance from other people—that’s for sure.Ali Rockett at the Richmond Times-Dispatch has more on Tuesday’s shameful display of violence by the Richmond Police Department. Here, again, is the hard-to-watch video of a police officer tackling a person off of their bike, smashing their head onto a sidewalk. And here is how the RPD’s Deputy Chief Sydney Collier describes the incident: “Force is met with force…He’s eluding. He’s trying to avoid capture. As long as he’s trying to elude, the officer used the only option he had to stop him while he was on the bicycle.” Force is met with force?? What kind of force, exactly, does an unarmed kid standing in front of a tow truck with a bicycle need to be met with? Watch that video again and tell me that was the only option available to over a dozen police officers to “capture” this one person on a bike. The police continue to gaslight us by responding to actual, literal video of their horrible behavior as if it doesn’t exist at all. I honesty feel like I’m losing my grip on reality when I read quotes like this. Who are these people? Why do they behave this way? Why will none of our elected leaders do anything about it??This seems like a big, leafy deal: The National Fish and Wildlife Foundation announced a $227,467 grant to the Chesapeake Bay Foundation that “will plant more than 650 new trees in neighborhoods suffering from extreme heat linked to racially-motivated housing discrimination in the past.” That’s awesome, but even awesomer, this grant will focus on Southside neighborhoods and build on the work that folks like Southside ReLeaf and Groundwork RVA are already doing in that part of the city.A million years ago in 2017, Richmond adopted the Pulse Corridor Plan which recommend a bunch of rezonings to make the neighborhoods surrounding our best transit denser, more walkable, and more transit-friendly. As part of that plan, the Planning Commission will consider rezoning the area around the Science Museum, Allison Street, and VCU & VUU Pulse stations next week. If you can’t wait to talk zoning/rezoning, tonight you can attend a virtual public forum from 6:00–7:30 PM to hear the Department of Planning and Review talk through this proposed rezoning and why it’s important. You’ll probably hear from lots and lots of neighborhood folks angry about the standard set of anti-density stuff: tall buildings, sewer and school overload, parking, and traffic. It’s frustrating to have to argue about these same exact things each and every time we want to build more homes so more people can live in our city, but, that’s the bad timeline we live in. Until we have a decidedly urbanist City Council and Mayor we’ll need to do whatever we can to drag Richmond forward in these tiny and frustratingly incremental steps.Whoa, the Virginia ABC reports a $117 million increase in revenue compared to last year. I’d love to see those numbers by month, because I bet a huge portion of that increase came during the coronaspring. Of note, over the course of last year, Virginians spent $52.3 million on Tito’s Handmade vodka, the top-selling booze in the Commonwealth. That’s a lot of vodka!Daniel Heffner at NBC12 says that “roofers working on Bellevue Elementary School in Church Hill uncovered a decades-old beehive while repairing a section of the roof.” The beepeople brought in to save/remove the bees estimated the hive to be 40 years old and contain 60,000 bees! The pictures alone are worth your tap.The Henrico and Richmond City Health Districts will host a free community testing event today at Tuckahoe Middle School (9000 Three Chopt Road) from 9:00–11:00 AM. Walk-ups welcome! If you’re sitting at home worrying about your coronastatus, get out there and get a free test this morning. These are your local health districts! They’re here to serve you. This morning’s patron longreadWelcome to Leeside, the US’s first climate havenSubmitted by Patron Susan. I love this genre of thing, where the creator fabricates bits of an alternative historical record to tell their story (my favorite example of this at the moment is the Mystery Flesh Pit National Park Tumblr). This piece in QZ tells the future history of Leeside, a (fake) Midwest town that decide to open its Rust Belt arms to climate refugees, and now, years later, the town is booming. It’s 2057 and no life has been untouched by the realities of a warming globe. But mere decades ago, at the dawn of the 21st century, Americans were only just waking to this truth. Rising seas, powerful storms, and raging fires were destroying their cities, rendering homes uninhabitable, and dismantling livelihoods. Residents affected by such loss began to ask, “Where will we go?” In an increasingly isolationist world, many responded, “Not here.” But Leeside opened its doors. And after years of implementing innovative policies benefiting both the environment and the city’s residents, the United Nations inaugurated Leeside as the United States’ first Green Haven in 2035. Now, the city is recognized as a model of successful adaptation—physical, economic, and social—to a world in which cities and their communities are transformed by the millions seeking shelter from the storm. If you’d like your longread to show up here, go chip in a couple bucks on the ol’ Patreon.
