In light of Janis Stockhouse's unexpected death at the tail end of 2024, we're re-posting Kirk's 2019 interview with her for anyone who might want to listen to it.Janis started teaching at North high school in Bloomington, Indiana, in the early 1980s. It was a time when "jazz education" as a concept was still a relatively new thing. She retired 38 years later, having grown the North band program into a well-known Midwest institution, winning countless awards at festivals around the world and regularly turning out graduates who would go on to become professional musicians, as well as many others who would simply have a lifelong love of music. On this episode she tells the story of starting out at North and developing the program, along with her thoughts on how to get students to practice, which composers she prefers for student groups, women in jazz, funding for the arts, and some good old-fashioned album recommendations.REFERENCED ON THIS EPISODE:Janis's 2004 book Jazzwomen: Conversations With Twenty-One Musicians, which she co-wrote with Wayne Enstice - there are used copies on Amazon, and you should really track down a copy and read itThe late great jazz legend David Baker, whose NYT obituary captured at least some of his legacy: https://www.nytimes.com/2016/03/30/arts/music/david-baker-who-helped-bring-jazz-studies-into-the-academy-dies-at-84.htmlMUSIC ON THIS EPISODE:"IU Swing Machine" by David Baker as played by the 2016 IU Celebration Big Band"Don't Get Sassy" by the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis big band"Hang Gliding" by Maria Schneider from Alegresse"Bright Eyes" as played by the Bill Holman big band"Take the 'A' Train" by Billy Strayhorn as performed by the Duke Ellington orchestra"Vol. 6: All 'Bird' - Now's The Time" Play-A-Long by Jamey Aebersold (featuring Kenny Barron and Ron Carter(!!))"Laugh, Clown, Laugh" by Abbey Lincoln from Abbey Is Blue, 1959"Song Patrol" by Jane Ira Bloom from Early Americans, 2016"Lingala" by the SF Jazz Collective from their 2005 self-titled album"So What" and "Flamenco Sketches" by Miles Davis from Kind of Blue, 1959"My Favorite Things" as performed by John Coltrane on My Favorite Things, 1966"Mercy Mercy Mercy" by Josef Zawinul as performed by the Cannonball Adderley quintet on Mercy, Mercy, Mercy, 1966OUTRO SOLOIST: BJ CORDThis episode's outro soloist is BJ Cord, a fellow Bloomington North graduate and fantastic trumpet player based in Portland. Lamentations 3 is a lament in which the author is lamenting the fall of Jerusalem. Yet there is a pivot point in the middle of the lament, at which he musters up his mercy recall. Jam Notes: Our yearly gig for the Duke Orthopaedic department holiday party. This is the best set list and the best put-together we have been, musically, in all the years we have been doing it. We really got organized on the set list and on the arrangements this year. Everybody played really well and there were really only one or two major mistakes. As usual, Ben had issues with his Zoom H4n batteries and so we only got part of the first set and started recording partway through the second set as well. Some of the songs are also partial recordings because the Zoom H4n ran out of batteries. Jam Notes: " "

Jam Notes: This is the same evening as the other Nash Street recording on Dec 9. This one was recorded by the local sound engineer Rainbow, who runs multiple mixes at the same time. The vocals are a lot easier to hear on these, as is every single little mistake. Note that this is the Christmas episode, meaning there are some unusual things on this recording. Also we ran out of CD space, as we often do, and so the last take of Lean on Me into 1-2-3 is cut short. Jam Notes: " "
In this episode, we'll go through the true story of the classic Cannonball Adderley Quintet album, Mercy, Mercy, Mercy! Live at The Club. It's a quick but interesting story. Deception! Secrets! Cloak and Dagger! Enjoy!
In this series we look at how to develop a more beautiful attitude based on some of the Beatitudes found in Matthew 5. Fortunately for us, Jesus gives us some very clear and compelling ways to achieve this.

Behold, I make all things new!
Gato Maestro at Nash Street Tavern. Probably our best ever gig in our latest incarnation of this band. This recording was created by the house sound maestro, Rainbow, and she did an excellent job. Ben chopped it up and made it indexable by tune. We missed a few songs of the evening due to the length of a standard audio CD. The second set got cut off before our hit 1-2-3, but we did get everything else. Also see the YouTube videos of this gig as well, they are quite good. A large nubmer of people we did not know came from out of nowhere to show up at Nash Street this evening and it gave us a bunch of energy and excitement. Guest performance by Lisa Timberlake on this one.
Gato Maestro at Paul's House. First time getting together with Chase after the winter holidaze. We are playin at Pauls house now and the room has quite a different feeling or vibe to it. We started working our way through the setlist to make sure everything was still intact for the March gig at Nash Street. Also note that we ran Feelin Good in the key for Lisa Timberlake to prepare for her singing it so it was out of range for Chase.

YOU - The Master Entrepreneur - A Guide to True Greatness with Stan Hustad
This is truly the start of 2023 and it's time for us to be more thoughtful and have greater courage to seek to grow up, to get a really good at what we do, and embrace the mystery of all things. There is so much about life in the world that we don't know and we need to be OK with that, and be humble. Then we are called to enjoy our forgiveness to share the awesomeness of amazing race with others, and then to remember that life is all about at its best, when we do Mercy Mercy Mercy. Well I hope is a little bit of a life-changing story for the new year that is ahead. Stan
Gato Maestro at Kyle's Parent's House. We played a gig for Kyles Parents 50th wedding anniversary at their house. Lovely folks, some of Gatos biggest fans came out. For the first few songs we had feedback coming from some mystery source and it messed us up quite a bit. This gig was outdoors during a rainstorm, so theres a lot of wind noise. Apologies about that. Doyle Hodgin also sang James Taylors How Sweet It Is to his wife.

"Mercy, Mercy, Mercy" is a jazz standard written by pianist Joe Zawinul and made famous by Cannonball Adderly's Quintet. In this tutorial, you will learn how to play the tune using authentic gospel voicings which have a variety of applications. Enjoy! Have you been trying to learn jazz piano with youtube videos, dvds, teachers but feel like you're still constantly guessing, can't play any tunes without copying what someone else has played, and don't know how to connect all the tid bits you've learned? I went through the same thing but thankfully stumbled upon a learning system I created based on proven language learning blocks. The JPS System brings you through 4 main categories of learning, Theory, Technique, Improvisation and Repertoire. I'll show you exactly how to utilize our popular system so you can finally achieve jazz piano freedom: http://jazzpianoschool.com/lookinside
In looking at the many things that Jesus is, he was an amazing teacher and people came from all over to hear Him speak. Jesus was not one who had a goal to make you “feel good.” No, he constantly challenged the status quo and confronted the power structures of his time. This was not only for those in his day, Jesus also challenges us today with teachings that seem to be opposite of the world we live in. “Blessed are the poor in spirit, Blessed are those who mourn…, Blessed are those who are persecuted.” They really don't seem to even make sense in our culture. In this series we will look at one of His most famous teachings in all of history and Jesus' longest recorded sermon: the Beatitudes from the Sermon on the Mount. Over the next several week we will focus on the Beatitudes talk about what it's like to live “Right-side Up in an Upside Down.”

Gato Maestro at Ben's House. Not sure what to say about this one. We are sounding more tight. It sounds a lot better when we meet more frequently, but not too frequently. Excellent solos on this session all around. Starting to dig down in the book for tunes that are less well known for when we do our gig.

In the 1960s this band had a string of hits that dominated the radio. “Kind Of A Drag”, “Don't You Care”. “Mercy Mercy Mercy”, “Hey Baby They're Playing Our Song” and “Susan” were a big part of the American response to the British Invasion. Ben's House. Our first time jammin together again in months. Chase was unable to attend. We ran through the tunes that either dont require very good vocals or had no vocals at all. It was good to get everybody back in sync, and it was probably necessary to remember how to play our instruments again before having Chase out. There were some very good jams in this one, as well.

Tritones at Duke Karsh Alumni Center. Due to COVID, **very** few people came out on this chilly winter evening. The Karsh Alumni Center was setup like a gambling hall or casino. There was also outdoor patio dining and stand up tables where people could drink and talk. Most people spent their time outside talking and did not either gamble or listen to the music. We did have one couple who swing danced to our music for two or three songs though, so that made the whole thing worth it.
The Poco a Poco Podcast with the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal
A series on King David: Part 4 of 4 Are we good at repenting? When someone notices our stuff and points it out… are we open to it? To repenting wholeheartedly? Or do we hold onto it? We need help repenting and finding healing, so God constantly sends prophets to speak into the lives of his chosen people. David's a really good example of how to be formed; how to be led. Look at Psalm 51 for a model of repentance. The orientation is totally towards God; it's not about turning in on ourselves. It is God who creates a new heart in you. We can choose to make sure that repentance takes place in relationship with God, who loves us. Even in the repentance of Psalm 51, there's a hope for restoration and reconciliation, and a recognition that God is still a giver of good gifts. Let us repent well. Coming up: we're going to prepare for Advent with Finding Your Place in the Advent Story from Ascension Press. Check it out here: https://ascensionpress.com/collections/rejoice-finding-your-place-in-the-advent-story The Poco a Poco podcast happens because of generous donors like you. In this chapter, we examine when and if it is OK to divorce. We also look at importance of mercy to the Father.
Gato Maestro at The Glass Jug Beer Lab. This is the second time the folks at the Glass Jug Beer Lab have been nice enough to let us come out. Ben was foolish in that he forgot to start the recorder until the second set was about to begin, but at least we got sets 2 and 3 recorded that night. There was a nice, focused group of about 40-50 people there all enjoying the tunes. We were extraordinarily quiet compared to some other shows we have played. I remember thinking that while playing and the recording definitely shows it. This is a live cut, meaning there are crowd noises surrounding all the songs, but they are still indexed such that you can find what you want.
Gato Maestro at Ben's House. Another one in prep for our gig at the Glass Jug on August 5th. Very very solid rehearsal. Covered a wide array of tunes, even the guitar tunes. We found confidence in our ability to execute these songs as a band in this rehearsal. Also we had a bit of fun messing around of course, too. Came up with the idea of an A Capella ending to Lean on Me.
Gato Maestro at Ben's House. We have a gig on 8/5, which is coming up fast. So we have started to dig back deeper into the book and look at tunes we have not played for quite some time. Aside from that, there was a fanastically funky jam with Justin groovin it out on the upper part of the neck on bass, Ben on melodica and Kyle going crazy on the drums, and of course Paul on the shaker. Groove girl and 1-2-3 are both insanely good in this particular rehearsal. Lets Stay Together needed a refresh on the string part for Ben as usual. We also do some unusual things on the form in Mercy Mercy Mercy.

In this episode we're featuring Kaia Kater and a nod to the Brothers Adderley. First up, the new roots and blues of Kaia Kater. She's Canadian born, yet embodies all the musical treasures the Americas have to offer. From bluegrass, folk, and jazz, to MC's like Rakim and Kendrick Lamar, it all comes together in this burgeoning artist's style of songwriting. Along with Ms. Kater, music columnist Bao Le-Huu (This Little Underground/The Orlando Weekly) joins in the conversation. Speaking of taking in all the sounds of America (and the world at large in this case), we pay tribute to the brothers Adderley: Cannonball and Nat. With a body of work that left no stone unturned, these two did it all with a sense of musical adventure and accessibility with a bit of show-biz gleen. All types of great music passed through the brothers' horns, ranging in themes to folklore, Broadway, afrobeat, astrology, religion, and psychedelia. Along the way the left a trail of bonafide classics - Work Song, Mercy, Mercy, Mercy, and Sack O' Woe - not to mention a who's who of talents they helped to foster, from Joe Zawinul, Charles Lloyd, George Duke, Yusef Lateef, and more. SONG CREDITS FOR THIS EPISODE: THEME: Jazz Phantom by Chomsk' (from the album "Different Beats" on Magnetic Records). FIRST HALF: St. Elizabeth and Nine Pin by Kaia Kater (from the album "Nine Pin" on Mavens Music).
