Playlist;(sintonía) RAMSEY LEWIS TRIO “Something you got” (top 63)ELVIS PRESLEY “Ain’t that lovin you baby” (top 16)ROGER MILLER “Chuck-a-lug” (top 9)JOHNNY CASH “It ain’t me baby” (top 58)CHUCK BERRY “Little Marie” (top 54)JERRY LEE LEWIS “High heel sneakers” (top 91)BOBBY BLAND “Ain’t doing too bad (part 1)” (top 49)B.B. The Flood rolled into Huntington's West End last Sunday to enjoy a simply perfect June afternoon, performing at a picnic to celebrate the 90th anniversary of the city's beloved Sacred Heart Catholic Church. What memories were made! Children and parents playing in the grassy field. Fun competitions for the kids, such as donut-eating contests. Old friends visiting and story-telling over hot food and cold drinks. For its part, the band wanted to augment its usual sets of rowdy party tunes with a respectable mix of religious numbers. Topping the list was one of the oldest songs in the repertoire. For this week's podcast, here from The Flood's first set of the afternoon is “Wade in the Water.”The Song's Long HistoryThis old spiritual — one of what W. E. B. Du Bois called “sorrow songs” (because they were associated with songs of the Underground Railroad) — was first published in 1901 in Jubilee Songs as Sung by the Fisk Jubilee Singers by John Wesley Work II and his brother, Frederick J. Work, an educator at Nashville's historically black college, Fisk University. The Sunset Four Jubilee Singers made the first commercial recording of "Wade in the Water" in 1925 for Paramount Records.Since then, numerous recordings and publications of it have appeared with variations on the lyrics, including both secular and religious renderings. Even pop and jazz artists have taken turns with the tune.In 1966, for instance, “Wade in the Water” was a popular instrumental hit for The Ramsey Lewis Trio, which prompted further instrumental recordings by other artists. The Flood's favorite version, however, is that of the late, great folksinger Odetta in 1954.The Song's MeaningOver the years, much discussion has centered on the source of the lyric “God's gonna trouble the water.” Perhaps the most learned interpretation of its meaning comes from professor Howard Thurman of Howard and Boston universities, who said he believed the line refers to a Bible story about a healing by Jesus (Book of John, chapter 5, verses 1-9). In that story, a sick man tells Jesus he is unable to get cured in the pool of Bethesda because he cannot get into the water quickly enough when it is "troubled," that is, stirred up or agitated. Verse 4 tells of an angel going down into the pool and stirring the water, adding, “Whosoever then first after the troubling of the water stepped in was made whole of whatsoever disease he had."Said Thurman, “This is the message of the spiritual. Do not shrink from moving confidently out into choppy seas. Wade in the water, because God is troubling the water."Okay, but what about the Underground Railroad's connection with “Wade in the Water”?Civil War freedom fighter Harriet Tubman, who made 13 trips to the South and helped free more than 70 people, used the song, Thurman said, to tell escaping slaves “to get off the trail and into the water to make sure the dogs slave catchers used couldn't sniff out their trail.”In the FloodisphereAs reported earlier in Flood Watch, The Flood's connection to the song starts with the band's fourth studio album, on which “Wade in the Water” is the title track. As noted recently, the song also led in 2012 to the band's debut on Canadian television. Click here to read that story. Finally, playing the song over the years sometimes has led to rare bits of religious reflections. Here's a favorite chunk of Flood chatter from a 2011 jam session. Click the button below to hear the late Dave Peyton tell how his Methodist mother was persuaded to cover all her bases with a little secret wading in the water of her own:You Want More Church-y Tunes?By the way, The Flood's eclectic repertoire includes a right reverent set of religious songs, as you can hear in the “Gospel Hour” show in the “Special Blends” playlists built into the free Radio Floodango music streaming service.Click here to read all about it. Before his solo work, before Blind Faith, before Traffic, a 14-year old known then as Stevie Winwood joined The Spencer Davis Group as a guitarist and lead singer. This blues-oriented British band released their first LP, conveniently called Their First LP in June of 1965 to British and European audiences. We are covering it in August 1965, but the album itself was not released in the United States at the time. Most of the songs would make it to the US market in compilation albums released years later. The Spencer Davis Group was Spencer Davis on vocals, guitar, and harmonica; Steve Winwood on lead vocals, harmonica, guitar, and piano; Muff Winwood (Steve's older brother) on vocals and bass; and Pete York on drums. Additional personnel included Kenny Salmon on organ for a couple of tracks, and one track found Peter Asher on piano and Millie Small on vocals. The album didn't enter the UK albums chart until January 1966, but it would reach number 6 on that chart after a single entitled "Keep On Running" from their second album entered the UK singles charts. "Their First LP" is blues driven, and much of the album consists of covers from blues artists. However, there are also some original pieces composed by Spencer Davis and by Steve Winwood. Spencer Davis went on to solo and collaborative work after The Spencer Davis Group, eventually becoming an executive for Island Records. Steve Winwood would of course move on to a storied career as a rock musician.Bruce brings this blues-laced proto-rock album to the podcast. My BabeThis track leads off the album. While the Spencer Davis Group did not release this as a single, it reached number 75 on the Billboard Hot 100 in October 1963 when it was originally released by its writers, Bobby Hatfield and Bill Medley. Hatfield and Medley are better known as The Righteous Brothers.DimplesThis cover was the first single released from the album, preceding the album by almost a year. The original was written and recorded by blues artist John Lee Hooker in 1956 as an ensemble piece. It was the first Hooker record to appear on the British record charts, though it would take until 1964 to reach the charts. While the Hooker single charted, the Spencer Davis Group cover did not chart.Sittin' and Thinkin'Here is an original song amongst an album dominated by covers. Spencer Davis wrote this song. It was released as a single, the fourth from the album, but only in the Netherlands. It Hurts Me SoThe closing track to the album was written by Steve Winwood. It was not released as a single, but it is an example of Winwood's early blues-influenced work. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:The Night Before by the Beatles (from the motion picture "Help!" )This film showcased the Beatles in a comedy adventure as the group tries to protect Ringo from an eastern cult. STAFF PICKS:Agent Double-O-Soul by Edwin StarrJames Bond is the obvious inspiration for Wayne's staff pick. Edwin Starr was singing with The Bill Dogett Combo when he went to the cinema to watch the Bond feature, "Thunderball." He wound up watching it 3 times before going back to his hotel room to write this song. Bill Dogett rejected his pitch to sing solo on this tune, so Starr left the group to become a solo act.I Want Candy by The StrangelovesRob brings us a tune by songwriters Bob Feldman, Jerry Goldstein, and Richard Gottehrer. They took on the persona of Australian sheep farmer brothers turned band members Giles, Miles, and Niles Strangelove for this group. This song with a Bo Diddley beat was inspired by dancer Candy Johnson who was seen at the 1964 Worlds Fair. Bow Wow Wow would have a hit with a cover of this song in the 80's.Since I Lost My Baby by The Temptations Lynch's staff pick comes from Motown in the form of a lover's lament written by Smokey Robinson and Warren Moore. It hit number 17 on the US charts. The Temptations would be a huge hitmaker in the 60's both with David Ruffin and Dennis Edwards on lead vocals.Same Old Song by The Four TopsBruce's staff pick features an American vocal quartet from Detroit who helped to define the Motown sound. This Holland-Dozier-Holland song hit number 5 on the Billboard Hot 100, and number 2 on the Billboard R&B chart. Lead singer Levi Stubbs was joined by Duke Fakir, Obie Benson, and Lawrence Payton to form the quartet, and they would remain together from 1953 until 1997 without a change in personnel. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:The "In" Crowd by The Ramsey Lewis TrioThis jazz single hit number 2 on the R&B chart and number 5 on the Billboard Hot 100. The Ramsey Lewis Trio would receive a Grammy Award for the album of the same name in 1966.

With the recent passing of jazz pianist Ramsey Lewis, co-host Jeremy decided that we should revisit one of our season 2 episodes where we covered the jazz legend. A WSL morreu! Viva a WSL! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/boia/message

The Standells were a Los Angeles garage band formed in the early 60's, often referred to as an early punk band. The lineup was Larry Tamblyn on organ and vocals, Tony Valentino on guitar, Gary Lane on bass, and former Mouseketeer Dick Dodd on drums and lead vocals. The name came from Tamblyn and Valentino, and referenced their standing around booking agents, trying to get a job.The group made use of their Los Angeles roots by appearing in several low budget films in the 1960's including “Get Yourself a College Girl” in 1964 and the cult classic “Riot on Sunset Strip” in 1967. They also appeared on the television series “The Munsters” as themselves in the episode “Far Out Munster.” They also appeared on The Bing Crosby Show under a pseudonym “The Love Bugs.” The Live Ones EP was recorded in March 1966, and showcases both the sound and the attitude of The Standells. The songs are short like most songs of the era, and make extensive use of the organ in the music. The Standells big hit was “Dirty Water,” a reference to Boston Harbor and Charles River which was notorious for its pollution at the time. Their first major gig was at The Oasis in Honolulu, which may explain the surfer influence. In 1966, The Standells toured with The Rolling Stones. The Standells continue to perform today, though the lineup has changed over time.Mr. NobodyThis song is about a guy hitting on the author's girlfriend. He isn't having any of it. “So you can take your fancy car and drive away real far. The world is full of nobodies like you are.”Why Pick On Me?If you've ever been attracted to a flirtatious girl who is there one moment and gone the next, you can identify with this tune. The lyrics that bring it home are, “candy kisses don't mean a thing if only flies those kisses bring.”Sometimes Good Guys Don't Wear WhiteThis track references the contrast between blue collar workers and white collar workers. When white collar workers thumb their nose at blue collar workers, sometimes the good guy isn't the one wearing white! “Everyday I work Hard. At night I spend restless time. Those rich kids and all their lazy money, they can't hold a candle to mine.”GloriaThe Standells covered this garage band standard by Van Morrison and his band Them. Many bands covered this song, perhaps the most popular of these covers was done by The Doors. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:“Born Free” by Matt Monro (Main Theme to the motion picture “Born Free”)This movie was released in March 1966, and told the tale of a couple who raised a lion cub and released it back into the wild. STAFF PICKS:Batman by Jan and DeanRob starts our staff picks with a cover from the campy cult classic superhero show of the 60's. A number of groups covered the song from the television show. Jan and Dean were football players who met while singing in the shower after practice and decided to form a band. They had a number of surfer inspired hits at the time.I Fought The Law by The Bobby Fuller FourBruce's staff pick is a song covered by The Clash in 1978. The Bobby Fuller Four had success covering this song in 1966, but the original goes back to 1959 when Sonny Curtis recorded it with the Crickets after he took the place of the late Buddy Holly. Just six months after the song hit the charts, Bobby Fuller was found dead from asphyxiation in his mother's car. The death was ruled a suicide, but many believe he was murdered. The Ballad of the Green Berets by Staff Sargent Barry SadlerBrian's staff pick is a positive, popular patriotic song. This would prove an unusual popular song as the protest song became more entrenched in rock music. This was the number 1 song of 1966. Barry Sadler released an album by the end of the year, though none of his other songs would prove as popular. I Spy (for the FBI) by Jamo ThomasWayne's closes out our staff picks this week with a Chicago group taking a Motown feel. It peaked at number 98 in the US, though it did slightly better in the UK. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Hi Heel Sneaker by the Ramsey Lewis TrioWe close out this episode with a jazzy number from Chicago-based Ramsey Lewis.
Oscar Wilde is credited with the quote, “Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery … ”. But in popular music, a cover version, remake, cover song, revival, or simply cover, is a new performance or recording by someone other than the original artist or composer of a song. Sometimes, a cover version can become even more popular than the original. Enjoy these 20 cover songs from the 1960s. Another musical exhibit from The Music Museum. Mento Buru from East Bakersfield, California has played around California's Central Valley since the early 1990s. Bandleader Matt Munoz explains how they, like many bands, have made a living and endured as a regional act. Last Christmas, Mento Buru released the East Bakersfield Christmas EP, which features Christmas classics adapted to suit the band's Latin ska sound. Munoz talks about how and why they made it, along with the two Spanish-language Christmas songs--"Donde Esta Santa Claus" by Augie Rios, and "Feliz Navidad" by Jose Feliciano. We discussed his fascination with Augie Rios in an earlier episode, but this time we talk about where he found the Spanish lyrics for the song that was written in English. Along the way, Munoz shares some of his holiday favorites, including songs by the Ramsey Lewis Trio, Cheech and Chong, and Alexander O'Neal. This week's episode also pays some attention to Earth, Wind & Fire's 2014 Christmas album, Holiday, and the 2015 Sony Legacy repackaging of it with a few extra tracks as The Classic Christmas Album. I'm fascinated by it because the band doesn't simply lend its grooves to Christmas favorites. On a number of the tracks, it either adds seasonal lyrics to pre-existing EWF songs, or it reuses familiar horn flourishes and signature parts to make their versions explicitly theirs. If you haven't already done so, please follow or subscribe to 12 Songs wherever you get your podcasts. If you listen via Apple, a five-star review would be much appreciated.

Lots of music was coming out of Detroit in the 60's, and one of the high energy groups coming out of the Michigan rock scene was Mitch Ryder & The Detroit Wheels. The group had crossover appeal with a little soul, a little funk, and a lot of energy. Breakout...!!! was their second album, and was indeed a breakout for this Motor City band.Mitch Ryder (stage name for William Sherille Levise, Jr ) was originally a backup singer with a soul band, but racial animosities forced the white Mitch Ryder to move on. Much of the music done by Mitch Ryder & The Detroit Wheels was cover songs. The group was legendary for their onstage presence and intensity. Breakout...!!! was an album compiled and released only after the songs had been released as singles. Walking the DogThis song is a cover performed by Rufus Thomas, and was done by many groups."Ooh Poo Pah Doo"If you get the image of a toga party when listening to this music, you're not alone! This song was originally written and performed by Jessie Hill, and was a hit for Hill in 1960. You get a sense for Ryder's vocal chops on this one.Little Latin Lupa LuThis Righteous Brothers cover was mentioned in the film “Hi Fidelity.” The sound of a revved up R&B permeates all of the rock genre.Devil With A Blue Dress OnOne of the more famous Ryder songs, this was first recorded by Shorty Long in 1964, but Ryder's version would pick up the tempo, and proved more popular than the original.ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Theme from the television series “Star Trek”This long-standing staple of the science fiction genre got its start in 1966, and the original series would run for (only!) 3 years.STAFF PICKS:“Working In The Coal Mine” by Lee DorseyRob presents a song written by producer Allen Toussaint, and recorded by New Orleans native Lee Dorsey. Dorsey was in boxing and auto repair before becoming a singer. You may be more familiar with the Devo version of this cover recorded in 1981.“Sunshine Superman” by DonovanBruce features the title track from Donovan's third album. This would be his breakthrough song. John Paul Jones and Jimmy Page were in this band, and would go on to fame in Led Zeppelin. ...“Superman or Green Lantern ain't got a-nothin' on me.”“Who Do You Think You Are?” by The ShindogsBrian's staff pick features the harmonies of LA-based Shindogs, who were formed as the house band for the ABC television show “The Shindigs.” They remained with the show until it's cancellation in 1965, and continued on until shortly after this song was released.“I'll Keep Holding On” by The ActionWayne's staff pick was a mod group, playing soul-influenced pop music in London. They had no hits, but were a warm-up band for The Who, and were known as a great live band. This song was originally recorded by a Motown group called The Marvelettes.INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:“Wade in the Water” by Ramsey Lewis TrioWe finish off this week with a horn-based instrumental gospel song on the charts at the time.

Today we take a version excursion and hear some great renditions of some classic songs. We begin with a smoldering "Dazed and Confused" from Hannah Williams & The Affirmations, and then weave our way through more classic rock staples including a soulful take on "Midnight Rider" from Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings, a super charged instrumental "Purple Haze" from The Link Quartet, and a powerful "Cumberland Blues" by Charles Bradley & The Menehan Street Band. From there the grooves continue with more familiar favorites like "Let's Dance" and "Night Fever" which, along with a few other nuggets lead us to the Ramsey Lewis Trio for their jazzy version of the War classic "Slippin' Into Darkness" while The Dynamics and their extra funky "Move On Up" bring us back full circle to the classic rock realm for War and their version of "A Day In The Life". 1. Dazed and Confused - Hannah Williams & The Affirmations 2. Midnight Rider - Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings 3. Purple Haze - The Link Quartet 4. Seven Nation Army - The Dynamics 5. Heartbreaker - The Boogaloo Investigators 6. Cumberland Blues - Charles Bradley & The Menehan Street Band 7. Let's Dance - Grandmagneto 8. Uptight - Dojo Cuts 9. "I hope to refine music, study it, try to find some area that I can unlock. I don't quite know how to explain it but it's there. This week we bring you a conversation with Chicagoland double bass luthier, teacher, and performer Steve Reinfranck. Steve runs SMR Double Basses in Evanston, Illinois, writes regularly for Bass World (the publication of the International Society of Bassists), and operates a double bass teaching studio. We also listen to a track from the Redd Holt Unlimited Quartet featuring Steve on bass, plus listener feedback, news and notes, a very fun holiday track from Jonathan Coulton, and much more. Enjoy! About Steve: Steve has performed and taught on the Double Bass for over twenty-five years, principally in the Chicago Area, but in places as far away as New Zealand, Japan, Kenya, and Germany. He plays section bass with a variety of area symphonies, and plays jazz with Isaac "Redd" Holt, original drummer with the Ramsey Lewis Trio. Steve is also involved in Klezmer, Bluegrass, and other folk styles. Steve has presented at Midwest Band & Orchestra Clinic, Illinois Music Educators convention, the Kentucky Music Educators convention, and at many of the conventions of the International Society of Bassists. He was awarded a three-week study tour of Japan under the aegis of the Fulbright Memorial Fund, and was voted Outstanding Studio Teacher by the Illinois Chapter of ASTA, the American String Teachers Association. Steve runs the largest shop in the Chicago Area dedicated strictly to the needs of the Double Bassist. He maintains a private teaching studio of about 50 students, and edits the "Young Bassists' Page" for BASS WORLD, journal of the International Society of Bassists. Steve teaches most Summers at ISYM, Illinois Summer Youth Music, held at the University of Illinois in Champaign/Urbana. Steve enjoys playing hockey, ice skating, reading, cooking, and politics when he isn't making music. About SMR Double Basses: We are a Chicago-Area shop catering to the largest member of the String Family, the Double Bass. We sell basses from the least expensive [that meet our minimum quality requirements] to several select instruments that are valued at over $20,000.00. All of our instruments have new professional-level strings and almost all have an upgraded endpin – except in cases where a good one comes from the factory. Our "Special Niche" is to provide reasonably priced instruments and bows for professionals and the serious student, perhaps bound for conservatory studies in college. Over twenty instruments in the $4,000.00 - $12,000.00 range are presently available.
