Seven years after Amanda Knox was definitively acquitted of the 2007 murder of Meredith Kercher, she flew to Italy to meet the man who had led the prosecution's case against her, Giuliano Mignini. The now 37-year-old mother of two wanted to ask her former prosecutor why he had identified her as the chief suspect, pursued a murder conviction against her, and whether he felt any remorse for putting the wrong person in prison. In her new memoir, Free: My Search for Meaning, Knox details this emotional meeting, the years leading up to it, and the shadow her wrongful conviction cast over her life. The book explores the power of acceptance and forgiveness, and how to cope with life's most challenging moments. In this conversation with Róisín Ingle, Knox talks about the fear and confusion of being accused of such a serious crime, how she reclaimed her identity when she finally walked free, and why what happened to her made her the person she is today. She spent almost four years incarcerated in Italy after her wrongful conviction in the 2007 murder of Meredith Kercher, a fellow exchange student, with whom she shared an apartment in Perugia. In 2015, Knox was definitively acquitted by the Italian Supreme Court of Cassation. In 2024, an Italian appellate court upheld Amanda Knox's slander conviction for falsely accusing Patrick Lumumba of murdering Meredith Kercher.Knox, aged 20 at the time of the murder, called the police after returning to her and Kercher's apartment after a night spent with her boyfriend, Raffaele Sollecito, and finding Kercher's bedroom door locked and blood in the bathroom. During the police interrogations that followed, the conduct of which is a matter of dispute, Knox allegedly implicated herself and her employer, Patrick Lumumba, in the murder. Initially, Knox, Sollecito, and Lumumba were all arrested for Kercher's murder, but Lumumba was soon released because he had a strong alibi. A known burglar, Rudy Guede, was soon arrested, after his bloody fingerprints were found on Kercher's possessions. He was convicted of murder in a fast-track trial and was sentenced to 30 years' imprisonment, later reduced to 16 years. In December 2020, an Italian court ruled that Guede could complete his term by doing community service. In their initial trial, in 2009, Knox and Sollecito were convicted and sentenced to 26 and 25 years in prison, respectively. Pre-trial publicity in Italian media, which was repeated by other media worldwide, portrayed Knox in a negative light, leading to complaints that the prosecution was using character assassination. A guilty verdict at Knox's initial trial and her 26-year sentence caused international controversy, because American forensic experts thought evidence at the crime scene was incompatible with her involvement. A prolonged legal process, including a successful prosecution appeal against her acquittal at a second-level trial, continued after Knox was freed in 2011. On March 27, 2015, Italy's highest court definitively exonerated Knox and Sollecito. However, Knox's conviction for committing defamation against Lumumba was upheld by all courts. On January 14, 2016, Knox was acquitted of defamation for saying she had been struck by policewomen during the interrogation.Knox later became an author, an activist, and a journalist. Her memoir, Waiting to Be Heard, became a best seller. In 2018, she began hosting The Scarlet Letter Reports, a television series, which examined the "gendered nature of public shaming".This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 03:03 UTC on Sunday, 19 January 2025.For the full current version of the article, see Amanda Knox on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm standard Nicole.

Can you imagine being accused of a crime you didn't commit? Even worse, imagine this happening while outside your home country - and in a language you don't fully understand.  What would you do? In this episode of the Truth Be Told podcast, host Dave Thompson speaks with Amanda Knox about her life after the wrongful conviction that changed her life - and made international headlines. They discuss the challenges of reclaiming her story, the impact of social media on public perception, and the importance of remembering the victims in wrongful conviction cases. Amanda shares her experiences leading up to the tragic murder of her friend Meredith Kercher and the chaotic aftermath that followed, including the media's misinterpretation of her reactions and the struggle for truth in a polarized and misinformed world. In this conversation, Amanda Knox shares her harrowing experience of wrongful conviction and the psychological impact of her interrogation. She discusses the assumptions made by investigators, the tactics used during her interrogation, and the broader implications of false confessions. Knox emphasizes the importance of understanding the trauma associated with wrongful convictions and the need for reform in interrogation practices. The conversation also touches on the media narratives that shaped public perception and the ongoing consequences for those wrongfully accused. Learn more about Amanda's work on her website and check out her podcast, Labryinths.  Truths: Amanda feels she is still chasing her narrative, as the day her identify was “stolen” was when she was interrogated and told her reality was different than what she knew to be true. Reactions to the crime scene were misinterpreted, without supporting context or information for the public to know. Media judgment can (and has) distorted public perception and interpretation of major incidents. Similar to witnesses and victims exposed to traumatic events, Amanda's emotional response was misunderstood. Misclassification can lead to devastating consequences in investigations. The criminal justice system was never on Amanda's radar. Investigators made assumptions that led to wrongful conclusions. False confessions often stem from coercive tactics or confirmation bias in investigations. Wrongful convictions affect not just the victim of the crime, but also the wrongly convicted individual, their families and loved ones. Often forgotten in a wrongful conviction is the impact to public safety which allows the actual perpetrator to continue to commit additional crimes. Understanding the psychological impact of interrogation is crucial for everyone involved. Reform in interrogation practices is necessary to prevent false confessions.

Investigative journalists Mandy Matney and Liz Farrell sit down with Amanda Knox to talk about true crime, journalism, media ethics and finding clarity in a world where facts aren't enough to persuade someone of the truth. In 2007, Seattle resident Amanda Knox was a 20-year-old studying abroad in Perugia, Italy, when the worst happened: A man broke into the apartment she shared with three other women and brutally raped and murdered her roommate: British student Meredith Kercher. The town's unscrupulous police agency immediately — and wrongly — put all their energy into making Amanda into a suspect no matter how many times the evidence told them otherwise. To make matters worse, they colluded with a tabloid reporter to paint Amanda out to be a “femme fatale” and fed the reporter made-up stories about what happened the night of Meredith's murder. And the public was only too happy to take part in the resulting frenzy that was almost entirely born out of these men's sexual fantasies about Amanda. Though she's since been acquitted on appeal and completely exonerated by Italy's high court, Amanda continues to grapple with backlash from those who have trouble accepting her innocence. But her focus isn't on them. It's on finding clarity amid the chaos and the injustice. Amanda, who is now a journalist, hosts the “Labyrinths” podcast with her husband, author and poet Chris Robinson. She is a mom of two, an author and an advocate for the wrongfully accused. Her latest book, “Free: My Search for Meaning” is available for pre-sale and will be released in March 2025. Her book Waiting To Be Heard, a NYT best seller, tells the full story of her harrowing ordeal in Italy—a labyrinthine nightmare of crime and punishment, innocence and vindication—and of the unwavering support of family and friends who tirelessly worked to help her win her freedom. Between 2007 and 2015, she spent nearly four years in an Italian prison and eight years on trial for a murder she didn't commit. She has since become an advocate for criminal justice reform and media ethics. She sits on the advisory council for the Frederick Douglass Project for Justice and serves as an Innocence Network Ambassador.

Sin embargo, las muestras de ADN encontradas en el lugar de los hechos identificaron al autor del crimen. — Support Us: Get your Merch here! : https://www.cuentocrimenpodcast.com/category/all-products Buy us a coffee: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/cuentocrimenpodcast — Follow us: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/cuentocrimenpodcast/?hl=en Tiktok: https://www.tiktok.com/@cuentocrimenpodcast?lang=en Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCb-xq8FGsgxqDOyT4CsCfHA Twitter: https://twitter.com/CuentoCrimenPod Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61550192066426 — Email us a personal true crime encounter at: cuentocrimenpodcast@gmail.com Learn more about your ad choices. In November, 2007, Amanda Knox was 20 years old and had been studying abroad in Italy when her roommate, Meredith Kercher, was brutally murdered. Around the world, all eyes (and cameras) were on Amanda as the main suspect and she was wrongfully convicted of the murder. After spending four years in an Italian prison, the verdict was overturned and Amanda was able to come home to the United States. In 2013, a new trial was ordered by the Italian court and ultimately Amanda was found not guilty a second time. Then just a couple of months ago in June, she had to return to the same courtroom for a re-trial on charges of slander.Today, Amanda talks with Ryan about how being introduced to Stoicism and The Obstacle is the Way completely changed her perspective while navigating her unimaginable situation. “In the eyes of other people, I was the girl accused of murder and I felt like they didn't really say anything true or real about me as a human being. And I had to really think about that idea, the obstacle is the way, to understand how that played a role in my life. It is a very defining part of my life, but also how I've reacted to it is even more defining about my life and how I've chosen to exercise my agency” - Amanda KnoxFollow Amanda Knox on Instagram: @AMamaKnox and on X: @AmandaKnox

On the night of November 1st, 2007 - during the Italian public holiday of Ognissanti - 21 year old British Student Meredith Kercher shared dinner with friends before saying goodbye and making the short 500-yard walk back to her accommodation, located at Via Della Pergola 7, in Perugia, Italy. Over the following hours, one of the following four possibilities took place:1. A suspect followed her home.2. A suspect was waiting in her home.3. A suspect broke into her home.4. A suspect was invited into her home.As night fell on All Saints Day, All Souls Day emerged from the same darkness that the suspect had escaped into. And with this, Italy awoke to the news of a horrific murder mystery occurring on their very doorstep. On a day that the country spent honouring and celebrating the dead, another life would tragically be added to that list. Was it the work of Meredith's housemates? Was it the work of a house guest? The court also determined that Kercher was murdered by more than one person and Knox washed Meredith Kercher's blood off of her hands and acquitted Knox. Israel whomps the unholy hell out of the Gaza Strip. Iran thinks that's no bueno, arms Hezbollah. Israel says, “Oh, F-you,” and bombs the Iranian Embassy in Syria, killing one of Iran's biggest douchebags, Brigadier General Mohammad Reza Zahedi, and other Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) commanders… and now, Iran has launched a drone attack on Israel. What's next? I suppose that's what we're about to find out… —I wish, I wish, I wish I could find a legitimate source for this next story. According to Reddit—noted home of QAnon and various other wonderful conspiracies—a Christian woman who believed the eclipse was a sign the rapture was upon us, went to a restaurant and tipped generously. And not “50%” generously, several hundred dollars on a $40 bill generous. Aaaaaand, when the rapture didn't happen, again, she went returned and demanded her money back. Because of course she did. —Italy: come for the pasta, stay for the murder. Amanda Knox was in the news again, so nathan did a little digging… Did you know that Rudy Guede, the man who actually murdered Meredith Kercher, only got a 30-year prison sentence? Even better, he was released early, to finish his sentence doing community service. Seems they're kinda light on crime there. Meanwhile, over in Vietnam, Truong My Lan was sentenced to death for a white collar crime. Man, God bless Vietnam! Imagine if the U.S.A. had put to death all the douchenozzles behind the economic collapse in 2008? (Or, for that matter, any economic collapse.) —Oh, Catholicism… your numbers are shrinking, and every time people are asked why they've left the church, they say, “It's 2024. People are gay. Get over it.” So, what did the church just do? Double down on their anti-LGBTQ rhetoric.  But wait, there's more! They've added surrogacy to the list! Yes, if there's one thing women love, it's being told what they can and cannot do with their bodies. —TikTok: it's where stupid people go to “learn.” Well, anti-diet influencers started telling people to listen to their gut when it came to diet. Eat right and exercise? That's for losers. Your body will tell you what you're supposed to eat, and if it's telling you candy bars and donuts? More power to ya! Oh, and by the way, the food industry is backing these influencers, and you're gonna gain weight and get fat if you listen to them. Who could have seen this coming? In 2007, British college student Meredith Kercher was raped and brutally murdered (stabbed 47 times) by Rudy Guede in Perugia, Italy where she was studying on an exchange program. Though this case made international headlines, very few people recognize the name of the victim and even fewer know the name of her killer. Rudy Guede who received a shockingly reduced sentence for this horrific crime, was allowed lenient furloughs during his incarceration, and was paroled three years ago after only serving thirteen years. Recently there are new allegations of rape and assault against him made by his 23 year old girlfriend. While the case is under investigation, Guede is fettered only by a restraining order and not under house arrest nor any other monitoring despite his violent history. Why has he time after time been given so many indulgences? While many may not recall Meredith Kercher's name nor Rudy Guede's there is one name everyone recognizes for all the wrong reasons in connection with this case and that name is Amanda Knox. Amanda, who happened to be one of Meredith's roommates at the time of her death, was wrongfully convicted of her killing. Though eventually exonerated after serving four years in an Italian prison, the white hot spotlight of attention both from the Italian police, the media and the public have followed Amanda since her release.
