Pastor walks his children through Westminster Shorter Catechism question 77—especially explaining how God has given each of us an unique set of experiences that place us under obligation to T.H.I.N.K. before we speak. Q77. What is required in the ninth commandment? The ninth commandment requireth the maintaining and promoting of truth between man and man, and of our own and our neighbor's good name, especially in witness-bearing.
Lent is a time for reflection and reorientation toward Jesus. Good music can help us with both of these things. Today I get to talk with singer-songwriter Sandra McCracken about the practice of Lent and how hymns can help us face our humanity and bring it all to Jesus. My husband John Stonestreet will be speaking, along with Dr. Katie McCoy and Dr. Andrew Walker. The topic for the evening is, “A New Sexual Revolution: Living as Image Bearers, Male and Female.” Our culture today is confused about what it means to be male and female because it's lost sight of what men and women are for. God's Word tells us that God created men and women to bear His own image in the world. Join us for this event to learn how to recover a Christian vision for living as embodied, male and female image bearers of God before a watching world. This is a free event, but spaces are limited. Secure your spot by registering today at colsoncenter.org/greenville. The Strong Women Podcast is a product of the Colson Center which equips Christians to live out their faith with clarity, confidence, and courage in this cultural moment. The Two Greatest Commandments: Loving God'sImage Bearer ( Matthew 5:27-32 )
Kindness seems to be in short supply today, evident in everything from online arguments to road rage and church divisions. As Christians, this is a problem because kindness is a fruit of the Spirit, and its scarcity means we're not reflecting Christ's work in our lives. In this episode, Costi Hinn shares three keys to cultivating kindness, helping us develop healthy hearts and live out this essential Christian quality.Order Costi's newest book “The Farmer Who Chose to Plant Kindness”: https://www.amazon.com/Farmer-Chose-Kindness-Fruit-Spirit/dp/0736987509

Genesis 1&2, Ephesians 5, Dt 6, February 2nd, 2025Family Matters is a series about “making more” of your family! We are not all on our own! We have…Jesus as the change agent; His life transforms our life. The Bible which majors on foundations and fundamentals. The Holy Spirit who gives power and wisdom for shaping and application. The Church from whom to borrow, lend and link faith.Quick fixes, short cuts and trick plays don't win championships. Championships take “more” commitment to the fundamentals.Marriage Championship Fundamental #1 Your spouse is an image bearer. You are an image builder.Genesis 1:26,27 (NIV) Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.” 27 So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. Genesis 2:7 (NIV) Then the Lord God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being. God's creative breath is profoundly more purposeful and deeply more personal than we could imagine. The Image of God is a physical manifestation of divine (or royal) essence that bears the function of that which it represents; this gives the image bearer the capacity to reflect attributes of the one represented and act on his behalf. Genesis 2:20b-25 (NIV) But for Adam no suitable helper was found. 21 So the Lord God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man's ribs and then closed up the place with flesh. 22 Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man. 23 The man said, “This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called ‘woman,' for she was taken out of man.” 24 That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh. 25 Adam and his wife were both naked, and they felt no shame. When God breathed into Adam, He established both male and female with that one creative act. God didn't need to breath twice – one breath was enough to fill her, shape her and cast her in His image, just like that one breath was enough to fill us, shape us and cast us in His image. The Hebrew word for helper doesn't translate apprentice or assistant. The same word used elsewhere in the OT is a reference to God and His connection to Israel as their strength, rescuer and partner. Man and woman become one in marriage for the expressed purpose of subduing and ruling together. Men and women are shaped differently, think differently and carry different roles and yet carry equal value and purpose.Championship Fundamental Application #1 Your spouse is an image bearer… treat them that way. You are an image builder…serve them that way. Q: If you carried this understanding at a championship level into your marriage, how would it elevate your words, actions and family trajectory? Championship Fundamental #2 Mutual submission empowers “more” marriages.Ephesians 5:21-33 (NIV) 21 Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ. 22 Wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands as you do to the Lord. 23 For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior. 24 Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything. 25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her 26 to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, 27 and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless. 28 In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. 29 After all, no one ever hated their own body, but they feed and care for their body, just as Christ does the church— 30 for we are members of his body. 31 “For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.” 32 This is a profound mystery—but I am talking about Christ and the church. 33 However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.Mutual Submission out of reverence for Christ is mission critical to a “more” marriage. Mutual reverence for Christ imparts His supernatural and powerful ways over our natural and limiting weaknesses.Mutual reverence for Christ elevates our understanding of mutual depravity and thus our mutual dependence on the grace of God. Mutual reverence for Christ links our mutual trust in Christ. Mutual reverence for Christ imparts a mutual empowering of the Holy Spirit. 2 Sets of Championship Level Submission Instructions For the wife, her submission instruction is to respect her husband. For the husband, his submission instruction is to love his wife. Cherish actions are submission actions out of reverence for Christ and love for her.Honoring actions are submission actions out of her reverence for Christ and respect for him. Mutual submission in marriage means humbling myself to fulfill my spouses greatest need. Together we are “more” and our “more” is less susceptible to the fractures Satan wants to introduce and exploit. Championship fundamental application #2 Cherish and honor one another out of reverence for Christ.Q: If you carried this understanding at a championship level into your marriage, how would it elevate your words, actions and family trajectory? Dating Life Championship Foundations1. Don't settle for anyone that isn't in awe of the image of God in you.2. Ensure the person shares your reverence for Jesus. This is a football!Recognize each other as Image Bearers.Bear responsibility as Image Builders.Revere Christ above Yourself.Cherish your Wife.Honor your Husband. The beauty of Christ reverence is that it comes with Holy Spirit power.
Text: Genesis 1:26-31 As God's Image-Bearers, We Represent Him on the Earth (1:26-27) God made us after His image and likeness, distinct from the rest of creation. God made us male and female for His glory. Implication: Our value and identity are tied to bearing the image of God. Therefore, we should seek after Him and bear His image in a way that pleases Him. As God's Image-Bearers, We Fill and Rule Over the Earth (1:26b, 28-30) God has given us the responsibility of reproducing His image on the earth. God has provided us with sustenance from His creation and given us the responsibility of dominion over His creation. Implication: This blessing and commission God has given us should lead us to delight in Him and depend upon Him. Conclusion: “God saw that it was very good.” (1:31) All that God made was good in His sight, with nothing incomplete or imperfect. All of creation worked in perfect harmony as God had designed.

"As children of God, we are reflecting something to the world... is it the light of Jesus? What kind of light are you reflecting?"Pastor Derrick preached a powerful message from John 1:1-8 and encouraged us to reflect on what it means to live as image-bearers of Christ, strategically placed in our homes, workplaces, and communities to reflect His light. We were reminded that “the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it” (John 1:5). Let's continue to reflect Christ's light wherever we go!
We are designed for connection—with God and with others. Yet, our sinfulness often disrupts the loving community we were created to enjoy. Thankfully, God calls us back into that community through the redeeming sacrifice of Jesus. In this message, Pastor Derrick explores Genesis 1 and 2, reminding us that we were never meant to navigate life alone. He identifies seven common barriers that hinder our relationships with others:PrideSelfishnessUnforgivenessFear & InsecuritySinful Nature & Fleshly DesiresPrejudice & JudgmentLack of LoveWhich of these challenges resonate most with you? How can you invite God to heal and transform those areas in your life?
"It is God's desire to restore intimacy in every one of our lives."In this message, Pastor Derrick takes us through Genesis 1–2, revealing how God designed us for a close relationship with Him. Despite the separation caused by the fall, Jesus, through His sacrifice, makes a way for us to be restored into that intimate connection with our Creator.

The Noahic Covenant: Humanity's Path to Redemption Greetings, saints of the Most High. Welcome to another installment of the Messianic Torah Observer. I'm Rod Thomas, coming to you on a beautiful Shabbat in the DFW area. I hope this message finds you and your loved ones well and blessed. Today, we delve into the Noahic Covenant, the second rung on Yehovah's ladder leading to our redemption. This covenant, established after the Great Flood, is foundational to our understanding of redemption and renewal. Our Torah Reading for this week is contained in Genesis 8.15-9.17, with the haftarah reading to be found in Isaiah 42.7-21, and the apostolic in 2 Timothy 2.8-19. I've chosen to entitle this post: “From Flood to Faith—The Enduring Promise of the Noahic Covenant – My Thoughts and Reflections on Torah Reading 7.” Key Concepts: Covenant (Brit): Yehovah's plan to redeem humanity. Renewal: The command to repopulate the Earth and renew the original Edenic/Adamic Covenant. Burnt Offerings: Noah's offerings on a rebuilt altar, leading Yehovah to resolve never to curse the ground or destroy all living creatures again. Yehovah acknowledges humanity's inherent evil but blesses Noah and his sons, reasserting human dominion over creation and lifting the prohibition against consuming animals for food. However, the consumption of blood and murder are strictly prohibited, with severe consequences for violators. The Noahic Covenant is a unilateral covenant, with Yehovah doing the heavy lifting to restore the broken relationship between Him and humanity. This covenant lays the groundwork for humanity to develop a "yetzer tov" (good inclination) and fulfill its purpose as Yehovah's image bearers on Earth. Significance of the Covenant: Unconditional Blessings: Despite humanity's shortcomings, Yehovah honors His covenant promises, symbolized by the rainbow. Foundation for Redemption: The Noahic Covenant is crucial for humanity's full redemption, reaffirming our inherent value as Yehovah's imagers and paving the way for future covenants. In conclusion, the Noahic Covenant is a testament to Yehovah's grace and commitment to humanity's redemption. As we reflect on this covenant, let us strive to overcome our "yetzer ra" (evil inclination) and walk in righteousness, fulfilling our purpose as Yehovah's image bearers. Shabbat Shalom. This lecture explores themes centered around human purpose, calling, and the intersection of personal experience with faith, drawing heavily from Psalm 8 as a foundational text. The speaker initiates the conversation by addressing the complexities of forgiveness and healing, emphasizing that these processes extend beyond merely checking boxes. Healing, as highlighted, is inherently communal; thus, participants are encouraged to seek support from pastoral staff and community therapists to navigate their journeys.Transitioning from healing to a broader life purpose, the speaker reflects on a common question: "How do I decide what to do with my life?" This inquiry transcends age, affecting not only young individuals but also those in mid-life reassessments. The speaker points out that amid significant life changes, many still grapple with their paths. He suggests that in exploring vocation, individuals often prioritize personal aspirations—what job may pay the best or match their unique skill sets—without considering the foundational questions regarding human existence and divine calling. The lecture delves into the etymology of "vocation," which originates from Latin meaning "call," reiterating that God's voice has echoed through the narratives of scripture, offering divine summons to various individuals. Here, there is a shift in focus: rather than simply looking for what distinguishes oneself, the speaker proposes that the exploration should begin with a recognition of common humanity, framing discussions of vocation within a narrative established by God.A significant portion of the lecture is dedicated to understanding our identity as creations of God (creatio dei) and what that entails. This identity provides not only freedom but also inherent limitations—both physically and morally. The speaker illustrates this concept through the lens of creation and the garden narrative, where human beings are given authority but also defined boundaries. He emphasizes that these boundaries are gifts rather than constraints, guiding individuals toward flourishing rather than chaos. The notion of "sacred pace" is presented as an important life principle, suggesting that embracing our limitations enables a more authentic engagement with our callings. The speaker references conversations with congregants, highlighting that personal circumstances often dictate the demands on one's life and calling shifts over time. Thus, the path forward may require discernment to ensure that one's workload aligns with personal values, relationships, and spiritual health. As the lecture progresses, it reiterates that every human being has a unique dignity (capable of God, or kapax dei), asserting that all are created in the image of God and possess inherent worth regardless of worldly success or failure. The implications of seeing ourselves and others this way throughout our vocational journeys underscore the sanctity of every individual, promoting a sense of mutual respect and understanding across different life experiences. In a poignant moment, the speaker references literature, including Tolkien, to illustrate that often the most meaningful tales are those we find ourselves unexpectedly in, prompting reflection on the personal narrative each individual is living. He encourages listeners to explore the richness of their stories and the depth of God's presence in their lives, igniting curiosity about the potential for establishing a connection with the divine through personal narratives.Ultimately, the lecture serves as a profound invitation to re-evaluate how we engage with our life's purpose and vocation. It encourages individuals to recognize both their limits and their extraordinary capabilities, seeking not just personal fulfillment but also a shared journey that honors divine intention and communal bonds. Through prayer and reflection, the participants are invited to align their personal arches of vocation with a recognition of God's overarching plan, fostering an environment ripe for spiritual growth and purposeful living.

This week Ralph shared with us on 'Leadership' ahead of commissioning our Sunday Nights & Worship core teams.
Humanity was created to be the image-bearer of the Living God. And because of the power of the Gospel through the Cross of Christ, we have been restored to how we were intended to live: bearing the image of Jesus Christ so our world might know Him. In this study, we examine the concept of image throughout Scripture, what it means to “bear His Name,” and discover the incredible privilege to reflect Christ to our world.
SouthCrest Church Sunday morning message, 9/22/24. We start our new series, God's Will for Your Life, on finding your purpose. Senior Pastor Matt McFadden leads off the series in Genesis 1:26-31. As created beings, we were created by our Father God with a purpose: to be His image bearer.
Genesis 1:26-28; Matthew 22:36-40; Mark 10:28-31 - We are living amidst a loneliness epidemic. There are many reasons for it, but at least one is our retreat from embodied, flesh-and-blood, local communities into digital spaces. In the age of "the machine," it could be that one of the most valuable counter-cultural things we can do is fight for community among the people of God. And perhaps our most powerful witness to the good news of Jesus will come through our living as a Spirit-enabled picture of the love of God between us. A sermon by Cameron Heger. [Part 3 of our 2024 vision series "Human Amidst the Machine"]
Political Scientist Mark Caleb Smith lives near Springfield, OH, which has been in the news because of false claims against its immigrant Haitian community by politicians. He talks about how as people of truth and grace, we as Christians, need to be careful about false claims and not dehumanize others. Carmen LaBerge talks about idolatry, not just by those who worship fall gods, but even by us if we treasure things above God. Faith Radio podcasts are made possible by your support. As image-bearers of God, what responsibility do we have to care for his good creation? Is the physical creation ours to exploit, manipulate, and use however we desire? Or do we have a unique calling to care for, cultivate, and steward this beautiful and very good planet we've been given?
