After a marathon session on Wednesday night, Republican lawmakers in the U.S. House of Representatives are poised to pass a massive tax and spending bill which President Trump has said he wants to sign on July 4. On Tuesday, the U.S. Senate passed their version of the bill after a tie-breaking vote from Vice President JD Vance. The bill passed by the Senate is expected to add $3.3 trillion to the federal deficit, according to the Congressional Budget Office, while making steep cuts to Medicaid benefits to help pay for trillions of dollars in tax cuts.    In Oregon, roughly 1 in 3 residents get their insurance through Medicaid. According to Oregon Health Authority’s Medicaid director Emma Sandoe, an estimated  100,000 to 200,000 Oregonians could lose their Medicaid benefits under the bill. On Wednesday, Gov. Tina Kotek and former Gov. John Kitzhaber, the architect of Oregon’s state Medicaid program, urged U.S. Rep. Cliff Bentz of Oregon’s 2nd Congressional District to vote against the bill. Bentz is the sole Republican member of Oregon’s Congressional delegation and roughly 40% of the residents in his district are enrolled in the Oregon Health Plan. Democratic U.S. Rep. Maxine Dexter of Oregon’s 3rd Congressional District is a pulmonary and critical care physician by training who testified against the bill on Capitol Hill and introduced amendments to it which were blocked by Republicans. She joins us to talk about the impacts of the Medicaid cuts for Oregonians and the new work and recertification requirements for Medicaid enrollees. “Think Out Loud” also made multiple attempts to request Rep. Bentz to participate in this conversation.

In the final part of our Reach series, we consider how believers, God's church, are equipped to advance the gospel in our world. Tamany's journey is far from typical, graduating college with a degree in Biology, but after an experience in Washington DC, Tamany would switch course to the Law route, leading to a career full of success! Tamany and I start prior to her introduction to Pennsylvania Carey Law School, where she would delve into her story, going from the doctor route to the Law route. When she finally arrived at Pennsylvania Carey Law School, her first year of law school was as good as it gets, only focusing on school for the first time in her life and getting to experience a completely different experience from what she was used to. Throughout her time at Law School, Tamany would talk about the various experiences she had, landing on Patent and Intellectual Property Law, and her love and immense ability with Civil Procedure, to guide her future career decisions. Following that, Tamany would talk about her journey to the various major positions she has held, as well as speaking on other lawyers she had met throughout her time who didn't come from the top law schools but hustled and had an extreme level of care for what they were doing. Her advice was to be like them and take every day in law as another day to make an impact in the world. Finally, we would discuss what Tamany does today as the founding partner of her firm, California IP Law. Tamany discussed her experience opening her firm and the successes and struggles that came with it. Rep. Cliff Bentz represents Oregon’s 2nd District in the U.S. House, covering most of the state east of the Cascades. He’s the only Republican in the state’s congressional delegation, and he voted in favor of the House budget resolution Tuesday that would mean nearly $900 billion in cuts to Medicaid over the next 10 years. Statewide, about a third of Oregonians rely on the Oregon Health Plan, which is the way people in the state receive Medicaid. Bentz, like many others in his party, has held town halls that have drawn crowds of angry constituents who raised big questions about the Republican party supporting Trump’s cuts to the federal government led by Elon Musk and the overreach of the executive branch. Bentz joins us to talk about his vote and how he’s approaching his job at this political moment.
