In this episode, CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO pays tribute to a genuine soundtrack hero and pioneer… Intrada Records founder, Douglass Fake, who passed away at the age of 72 on July 13, 2024. Who was Douglass Fake? Well, one of Doug's closest friends and colleagues, Joe Sikoryak, wrote a beautiful obituary a few days after Doug's passing on Facebook. You can read it HERE! I personally never met Doug, but I did communicate with him and Roger Fiegelson, Intrada's executive producer, many times when requesting albums to play on my soundtrack show, which began in 1996. Doug and the rest of the crew at Intrada have been supporting the show for over 25 years, and I do remember Doug telling me that if I ever needed anything, I should call or email him or Roger and they'd send whatever I requested down immediately. It didn't matter if it was a new release or a release that came out ten years ago; if they had it in stock, they'd send it down. We planned to release this episode a few weeks ago but a few things popped up that slowed down production (work and illnesses). On top of that, the fine folks at Intrada Records were guests on Robert Emmett's soundtrack radio program "The Norman Bates Memorial Soundtrack Show," where they produced their own three-hour tribute show to Doug on Saturday August 24, 2024. So, not to step on any toes, I decided to delay the release of my own tribute show to today. So, on today's show, we'll be playing not only selections from Intrada's extensive soundtrack library, but also messages of remembrance from fans such as Amer Zahid, Chris Malone, Ian Clark, Jason Drury, Jim Wilson, Nick Zwar, Lee Wileman, and Victor Field. Doug's was a legend in the soundtrack community and we owe him a debt of gratitude for bringing much joy into our lives. Thank you, Doug. You will be missed. Enjoy the show! On this premiere episode of the newly rebranded THE ESSENTIAL SOUNDTRACKS, host Randy Andrews and Erik Woods talk about the film and score to the 1984 Nick Castle-directed sci-fi/fantasy/adventure film, THE LAST STARFIGHTER, starring Lance Guest, Robert Preston, Dan O'Herlihy, Catherine Mary Stewart, Norman Snow, and Kay E. Kuter. The film tells the story of Alex Rogan, a teenager recruited by an alien defence force to fight in an interstellar war. Randy and Erik also detail the numerous themes in the score, the recording of the soundtrack, the composition and form of the action material, and the heart behind the music, especially the finale cue "Into The Starscape" The original score for the film was composed by Craig Safan and was recorded by Lyle Burbridge in Los Angeles. The original soundtrack recording was originally released on Southern Cross Records both on CD and LP in 1987. Intrada Records expanded the album both in 1995 and 2015. Earlier this year, Intrada released the definitive release of the score featuring the same program as the 2015 version but with greatly improved sound quality. Soundtrack Producer Mike Matessino presents Intrada Records' new 2-disc expanded edition of John Williams' score for Clint Eastwood's alpine thriller, featuring the world premiere release of the original film recording and a remastered version of the 1975 soundtrack album Hosted by Maurizio Caschetto and Tim Burden The restoration of Maestro John Williams' rich filmography adds another pivotal item to its ongoing process of “future proofing”. Intrada Records has just released a 2-disc expanded edition of one of the Maestro's most interesting and diverse scores of his pre-Jaws era: The Eiger Sanction, written for the 1975 alpine thriller directed by and also starring Clint Eastwood, in his one and only collaboration with the composer. The new release is produced and remastered by Mike Matessino, who continues to be the ultimate guardian of John Williams' film score presentations through his universally admired painstaking methodology of soundtrack restoration, preserving the Maestro's work for all future generations in the best and most accurate way. The original soundtrack album issued on MCA Records at the time of the film's theatrical release was a re-recording where Williams selected cues from the score expanding and repurposing them for a more cohesive listening experience. The brand-new 2-CD release by Intrada Records presents both a remastered version of the 1975 MCA soundtrack album and the premiere release of the original film recording, featuring a great deal of unreleased music, including never-before-heard material that was written and recorded for a longer cut of the film. All the material has been painstakingly restored and remastered by Mike Matessino. Exclusive video podcast with soundtrack record producer Mike Matessino discussing his restoration work on John Williams's thrilling score for the sci-fi classic directed by Steven Spielberg in 2005 Hosted by Maurizio Caschetto and Tim Burden Steven Spielberg's big-budget adaptation of the sci-fi classic novel by H.G. Wells War of the Worlds marked the 22nd collaboration between the esteemed director and composer John Williams. The film turned out to be a very unique and perhaps even personal project for the director, who took the opportunity to craft a grim moral tale disguised as an action-packed sci-fi drama. The movie presented a unique challenge for composer John Williams. The music accompanies the drama with his usual skillfull dramatic sensibility, giving the film's action sequences its necessary propulsive energy, but at the same time avoiding any kind of leeway to conventional scoring. Instead the music enhances the dark, grim tone of the film through violent Herrmann-esque orchestral colors (12 horns, 2 tubas, 5 trombones, 2 sets of timpani playing antiphonally), unstable harmonic language and an overall tone of fragilty and uncertainty.  The new remastered edition released by soundtrack specialty label Intrada Records has been meticolously restored and produced by Mike Matessino, who worked from the original audio elements to rebuild from scratch the mixes and all the performance edits. The new release is spreaded on two CDs--Disc 1 presents the complete 80-minutes film score with all the cues in chronological order as they appear in the film (including unreleased and extended material), while Disc 2 offers the remastered original soundtrack album, plus a slew of alternate cues that reveal Williams' meticolous creative process for the film. In this conversation with The Legacy of John Williams, Mike Matessino offers his deep thoughts about how this new release of War of the Worlds came about, how the perception on the film and some of its most controversial aspects changed throughout the years and became even more relevant in today's world, the role of the music within the film and how the new edition was meticolously assembled and produced. Rocky IV is the original motion picture soundtrack to the movie of the same name. It was originally released in 1985 on the Scotti Brothers label. In 2010 Intrada Records released the original score by Vince DiCola, which was not available before.

Jason takes a trip back to 1983 and plays for you selections from John Barry’s score to HIGH ROAD CHINA. Composer Roy Budd was born on March 14, 1947. Sadly and suddenly, he passed away at the age of 46 from a brain hemorrhage on August 7th, 1993. Jason celebrates Budd’s 70th anniversary with music from FEAR IS THE KEY and his final score for PHANTOM OF THE OPERA. Back in 2009 Intrada Records released Jerry Goldsmith score to ONE LITTLE INDIAN by Jerry Goldsmith. You’ll hear a suite from that score which was initially released in 1973. Chatting with iZLER is always a complete joy. This is our fourth interview together (3rd for 2013) and we never run out of stuff to talk about in the busy composer's career. iZLER is best known for his work on Shameless and Revenge, and here we discuss the CD release of the Revenge score from Intrada Records. This interview mainly focuses on how he compiled 1 CD from over two seasons of music and all the challenges that encompass that task.
