Zo takes a vacation in the Big Apple fully intending on visiting the Statue of Liberty. Even though the statue was being renovated it was still open to visitors and Zo noticed some crazy shenanigans outside the statue. It seems that one of the tourists is on the outside and jumping around the massive and complex scaffolding that had been erected around the statue. It seems as though this crazy fellow is being pursued by the construction crews. The strength and balance that the man has to jump around the scaffolding is amazing, not even the construction workers seem as skilled. This whole situation is incredibly peculiar, but it's just another day in New York one might guess. Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins is based on The Destroyer series of pulp novels. Clearly inspired by James Bond, the character takes an American spin on the cloak and dagger antics of black ops. Unlike Agent 007, though, Remo Williams—at least in his big screen incarnation—is not the most compelling character. And by modern sensibilities, it doesn't help that his trainer—an elderly Korean marital arts master named Chiun—is an assemblage of racist tropes. Oh, lest I forget, he's played by a white actor in bad makeup. Cue the wide eyes emoji. Thus, despite being helmed by 60s/70s Bond staple Guy Hamilton, Remo Williams fails to capture the charm of those cinematic escapades. And on a budget of $40 million—which was quite high for 1985—it grossed just $14.4 million. Cinematic universes are not born with those type of receipts. Now, sit back, toast to your new identity with a Backyard Explorer IPA from Pizza Port Brewing Co., and remember to breathe! Sahara was meant to be the next big adventure franchise—an Indiana Jones for a new era. Its main character—Dirk Pitt played by Matthew McConaughey—was the lead in a series of novels by Clive Cussler. The material was there to be mined, but the audience was not. Despite its inspiration, Sahara could not match the popularity of the novels. Grossing just $119 million worldwide, it took quite the hit at the box office, especially since the cost of the film ballooned during production. The reasons for why those costs went off the rails are plentiful and detailed extensively in an old LA Times piece. Its failure aside, there is some fun to be had. With exciting set pieces and that classic McConaughey charm, this should not have been the flop it was. Now, sit back, quench your thirst for adventure with a Shiner Bock from the Spoetzl Brewery, and don't drink that well water! Tread Perilously returns to pilot season for a selection of shows that may or may not have made it to series. First up: Remo Williams comes to television in a pilot episode called "The Prophecy." A year after the events of Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins, Remo and Chiun have relocated to the Southern California beaches. But with Chiun's promise to train Remo for a year nearing its end, he plans to return to Korea while his pupil plans for some debauchery. Neither gets what they want as CURE Director Smith has plans of his own for the pair. And will either be ready for Chiun's prophecy to come true? Erik and Justin acknowledge the Joseph Wiseman in the room as they discuss the problem with casting Roddy McDowell as Chiun. Their picks to replace him, though, reveal a lack of familiarity with Korean actors in the 1980s. Series star Jeffrey Meek also proves to be a problem -- but a very different one! Erik's Roddy McDowell impression turns into Kate Mulgrew for various reasons. Justin reveals Remo's origins in the book world. The TV history of Judy Landers is explored. The pilot's structure gets criticized and a crappy robot accentuates many of the episode's overall flaws. But will Justin determine if Remo Williams made it to series?

"A hero who doesn't exist must save America from an enemy we never knew we had." In this episode, we discuss the 1985 cult classic 'Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins', starring Fred Ward, Joel Grey and Kate Mulgrew. Directed by Guy Hamilton.
Is it an homage to classic 70's kung-fu movies, complete with an old master teaching a young and impatient prodigy the mystic and ancient ways of combat? Perhaps it's a tongue-in-cheek popcorn action movie, poking fun at itself while projecting chaotic and entertaining action sequences with reckless abandon? Or is it a poignant commentary on shadow organizations and the futility - and risks - of embracing an assassinate evil policy to address the world's issues? Well, your guess is as good as ours, and we're pretty sure the people who made this movie didn't know either. Just like the pile of vomit Benny's dog helpfully deposits on the one patch of carpeted floor in the house every week, Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins is a jumbled patty of everything mentioned here - vomit included. Hold on to Ferris wheels, steel pipes hanging off the side of the Statue of Liberty, and any other ridiculous object you can grasp as we try our best to understand what the hell is going on in this movie. We're pretty sure Remo Williams was supposed to cash in on all of the crazy action movies tearing up the box office at the time, but fell victim to a combination of starring someone no one has ever heard of before (or after), and being absolutely bonkers-level insane. Seriously, we have no idea what happened in this thing, or why, or how. We just know that it was two hours of absolute insanity. And not good insanity, like a pile of puppies all fighting to give you kisses. We're talking bad insanity, like when you drop napalm-quality farts in the car, and secretly lock the windows so you can revel in your family members crying, frantically fumbling with buttons, and dry heaving uncontrollably. Happy summer! If you can stomach it, strap in while Jay and Benny waste your time discussing such things as: Remo's elderly Asian instructor wasn't played by an Asian person. Let's just get that out of the way Remo Williams won an actual, for real Oscar for makeup, because of the work done to make someone non-Asian look Asian. We'll get that out of the way as well One final thing to get out of the way: Chiun is far and away the best character in this movie, and almost makes it worth the watch. Joel Grey's acting is fantastic, the lines he delivers are well-timed, and he's the most likeable person in this entire disaster While completely unintentional, this movie does a great job making the audience really think about the implications of assassination. Killing off the world's worst people sounds great in theory, but is it? Remo's training throughout the movie feels like it's less martial arts, and more a mix of goofy parkour and kids on YouTube risking their lives for a few likes At one point, the bad guys pay three random construction workers $20 each to literally murder a human being. And they have absolutely no problem with this arrangement Remember in The Matrix, when Neo dodged bullets and it was the coolest thing you had ever seen? Well, Remo dodges bullets as well. It is absolutely not the coolest thing you have ever seen Someone get me the name of the dog trainer used in this movie, because the guard dogs that attack Remo are smarter than Benny. That isn't saying much, but still Fred Ward, who played Remo, has a filmography with Tremors and Joe Dirt at the top of it. Just saying

This week, Paul and AJ enter into their very first three-way with none other than Greg Sahadachny of The Debatable Podcast and All the Pieces Matter. That's right, it's a veritable ménage à geek, as the gang undergoes a tri-part Geek Challenge featuring as much paranoia as they could cram into one podcast. In reverse chronological order, we've got Guy Hamilton's 1985 cult movie (does this thing have a cult?) Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins, wherein Fred Ward and a regrettably racist Joel Ward try to take out a secret government weapon; 1977's Black Sunday, a John Frankenheimer would-be blockbuster wherein Robert Shaw's Mossad agent tries to stop Bruce Dern before he kills 80,000 Americans at the Super Bowl; and lastly, Alan J. Pakula's 1974 conspiracy thriller classic The Parallax View, which features Warren Beatty uncovering a cynical government plot. Lots of distrust, misdirection, and bloodshed here. Or as we like to call it, just another episode of Gobbledygeek. Next: Greg Sahadachny is back for the penultimate installment in our Four-Color Flashback series on Jeff Smith's Bone. This time, the boys tackle Vol. VIII: Treasure Hunters
There's a starman waiting in the sky, and his name is Mark Watney. Back in February, we talked a whole bunch (some would argue too much) about the Red Planet's greatest botanist when we hosted a Gobbledy-Book Club discussion of Andy Weir's The Martian. Now, Paul and AJ have reconvened the Book Club--Wanna Cook? author Ensley F. Guffey, So Let's Get to the Point's Kenn Edwards, and the all-around amazing Hallie Prime--to tackle Ridley Scott's star-studded film adaptation. Is there a certain amount of character-building shorthand a filmmaker can accomplish by casting familiar faces? Is the film really the story of a band of precocious potato plants? Does Matt Damon have the chops to be stranded all by his lonesome? And most contentiously...does the science hold up? All this and more, plus what pop culture the gang is excited for. Next: The Debatable Podcast's Greg Sahadachny joins us for our very first Geek Challenge three-way. The movies the boys have challenged each other to this time are Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins, Black Sunday, and The Parallax View.
Continuing with their Wilfred Brimley double-feature, this week around Dion Baia and J. Blake take on an 1980’s classic, and a pretty remarkable film on its own right (if not downright puzzling), 1985’s Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins. With a title like that, the boys are all in! Especially since Bond directing legend Guy Hamilton was brought […]

http://searchforschlock.com/media/podcasts/sfs-065-SouthernComfort.mp3 Download MP3 We're going into this one blind; it made the list only because it was one of those movies that left a hazy impression on Chris at a young age, and he never got to see the ending. We're familiar with much of the cast and crew: it's directed by Walter Hill who brought us Crossroads (not the one with Britney Spears), and it features Fred Ward from Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins and Lewis Smith from The Heavenly Kid, giving it a Search For Schlock Score of at least 3 and strongly suggesting that we've seen too many movies. In any case, there's reason to be cautiously optimistic. It's Deliverance in the bayou, y'all! So, just with a lot of people talking about how much they love gumbo. The Guys Outta Brooklyn started out to discuss Films That Were No Longer on DVD, but after talking about some actual movies in limbo like the earlier Harry Palmer films, Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins, and Cast a Deadly Spell, well, they started locating some of the suggested films lost to time! Thus, join The Guys Outta Brooklyn as they locate some truly cool films their fan base thought unavailable commercially, like The Billy Jack trilogy, and the work of Val Lewton! And if that's not enough, Tom and Derrick somehow end up sitting in front of Wonderbox looking at pictures of The Crazy Babysitter Twins! It's called fast food for a reason, so get to clicking!
