Welcome to another episode of Death Don't Do Fiction, the AIPT Movies podcast! The podcast about the enduring legacy of our favorite movies! It's May, which means it's time for the AIPT Movies podcast's “Mayhem” series! Where we cover movies that kick ass in the literal sense! In this week's episode, Alex, Tim, and guest Tony Sedani discuss the messy-yet-beautiful 1991 Bruce Willis action romp, The Last Boy Scout!Sleazy 90's vibes! A mile a minute pace! Satan Claus! Goons in sunglasses! $650 pants! An iconic celebratory jig! Football that's somehow even more dangerous than usual! A stadium with a secret hangout and fireplace! A surprisingly loud, public, and messy "professional" assassination! A guy with the name Joe Hallenbeck who has actually seemingly gone to hell and back! Behind the scenes friction that inspired a character in True Romance! A great musical score from Lethal Weapon & Die Hard's Michael Kamen! A cast that includes a young Halle Berry, Damon Wayans, Danielle Harris, Taylor Negron, and Bruce McGill! A shot of excessive violence and entertainment that's effectively a who's who of 90s action cinema with Tony Scott's visually stunning direction, Joel Silver producing, Shane Black writing endless one liners, and Bruce Willis delivering one of the greatest cigarette-smoking performances of all time!In addition, Tony discusses his Mission: Impossible series rewatch in preparation for “The Final Reckoning,” while Alex shares some spoiler-free thoughts on Fight or Flight, the third movie in the French Netflix action series, Last Bullet, and Final Destination Bloodlines! You can find Death Don't Do Fiction on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts. ¿Vida eterna? (Juan 3) - Ruta 66 con José de Segovia

Podcast El pulso de la Vida

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 23, 2024 51:04

We developed our On First Listen series so we'd have the opportunity to give a good listen to albums which had somehow gotten past us. Maybe we'd always seen it in the record store and were curious or maybe friends had recommended the album but we never had a chance to listen. Perhaps, like Roger Waters 1984 solo effort The Pros & Cons of Hitchhiking, it was both as the distinct cover is a young boys record shopping fantasy and many prog-heads have suggested it's better than The Wall from Roger's former band Pink Floyd. In fact, he brought both concepts to the band in the late 70s - they could pick the one they liked best and the other, Roger would keep for a solo album. While The Wall became a cultural touchstone selling tens of millions of copies around the world, The Pros & Cons was met with a much cooler reception. And while Roger employed the talents of folks who had helped make Pink Floyd's The Wall such a success like artist Gerald Scarfe, he also brought in some preeminent musicians like David Sanborn, Michael Kamen and Eric Clapton. Telling a story in real time of a man dreaming about having an affair, the ambition of Roger Waters for the stage and screen of his idea is epic. However, despite all this help the album didn't sell like a PInk Floyd album and many critics and fans savaged the album as Roger's negative ego trip. Yet some say it's his finest work, in or out of Floyd. To help give us some insight, we brought back friend of the show Lee Dickson who was Eric Clapton's longtime guitar tech. Though his memory is a bit foggy, the stories of how the stage was setup and how the musicians performed this music on-stage are really special and we're so glad to have him back. This week's pick is thanks to long time supporter, Tony Farina! The production of "Last Action Hero" in 1993, directed by John McTiernan, was a high-profile endeavor that aimed to blend action-adventure with metafictional elements, satirizing and paying homage to the action movie genre. Starring Arnold Schwarzenegger as fictional action hero Jack Slater and Austin O'Brien as the young film enthusiast who finds himself transported into Slater's world, the film sought to deconstruct the conventions of action films while delivering a blockbuster experience. The screenplay, penned by Zak Penn and Adam Leff, underwent revisions to balance the satirical elements with the expectations of a mainstream audience. The film faced challenges, including the high expectations associated with Schwarzenegger's star power and the complex task of seamlessly integrating the fictional and real worlds within the narrative. "Last Action Hero" was also notable for its collaboration with renowned composer Michael Kamen and the rock band AC/DC, who contributed to the film's soundtrack. The production's blend of action, humor, and self-awareness reflected a bold attempt to subvert traditional genre tropes, but it faced mixed critical and commercial reception upon its release. Over time, the film has gained a cult following for its inventive approach to storytelling and its willingness to deconstruct the very genre it celebrates, making it a unique entry in Schwarzenegger's filmography. As the real and fictional worlds collide, Danny and Jack team up to navigate a genre-bending adventure filled with explosive action, larger-than-life villains, and self-aware humor. The film cleverly deconstructs action movie conventions, offering a satirical commentary on the genre while providing a thrilling and entertaining experience. Schwarzenegger's portrayal of the fictional character within the film-within-a-film concept adds an extra layer of humor and metafiction to the narrative, making "Last Action Hero" a unique and often underappreciated gem in the action-comedy genre. thevhsstrikesback@gmail.com https://linktr.ee/vhsstrikesback --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thevhsstrikesback/support

The show was the first time Anastasio performed in public with Lawton and Markellis, who were joined by guitarist/vocalist Tom Lawson of The Pants, saxophonist Dave Grippo, trombonist James Harvey and vocalist Heloise Williams of Viperhouse.“First Tube” was seemingly named for its placement as the first song played at the 8 Foot Fluorescent Tubes show, which also saw the premieres of future Phish/TAB songs “Sand,” “Mozambique” and “Last Tube.” Trey, Tony and Russ would go on to form the first incarnation of the Trey Anastasio Band which made its debut — back at the Higher Ground — in February 1999. That concert again featured “First Tube” as part of the setlist. The same TAB trio was also the lineup on Trey's first solo tour in May 1999. By the end of that acoustic/electric tour, “First Tube” was a full-on show-stopper that highlighted many electric second sets. Along with fellow 8 Foot Fluorescent Tubes original “Mozambique,” “First Tube” made its Phish debut on September 9, 1999, in Vancouver, British Columbia. One of two instrumentals on Farmhouse — along with “The Inlaw Josie Wales” — “First Tube” earned Phish a Grammy Award Nomination for Best Rock Instrumental Performance in 2001. Composed in 1987, the thesis included an essay piece and collection of songs (recorded by Phish) relating an epic tale from the band's fictional land of Gamehendge. On the album, the story of Gamehendge is told in nine parts, with short spoken narration in between. The saga can be compared to rock concept album projects like The Doors' Celebration of the Lizard or Rush's 2112 suite.The story's primary protagonist is Colonel Forbin. Other major characters include Tela, the "jewel of Wilson's foul domain" and the "evil" Wilson himself. Several of the album's spoken narrative sections are accompanied by background music borrowed from sections of the Phish songs "Esther" and "McGrupp and the Watchful Hosemasters". The final track, "Possum", is the only song on the album not written by Anastasio, having been written by former Phish member Jeff Holdsworth and later added to the Gamehendge cycle.Jeff Holdsworth is a musician who was a founding member of the rock band Phish.[1] Founded at the Redstone campus dormitories of the University of Vermont (UVM) in the fall of 1983, the band originally featured Holdsworth and Trey Anastasio sharing lead vocal and guitar duties, Jon Fishman on drums, and Mike Gordon on bass guitar. Holdsworth left the band in 1986 after graduating from UVM to pursue a career in electrical engineering, shortly before the band recorded their debut self-produced album, The White Tape, though he had played on some of the demo recordings (done in a dorm room) that would later be re-recorded for that album. His songs "Possum" and "Camel Walk" continue to be Phish live show favorites.  James Casey                       ARTICLE Show #3:             Dear PrudencePhil & Friends (Casey singing)  Rick Mitarotonda (Goose), John Medeski, Grahame Lesh, Nicki Bluhm, James Casey, Katie Jacoby, John MoloMarch 17 2023Capitol Theater3:12 – 4:36Phil Lesh & Friends - Dear Prudence - Feat. The song was written by John Lennon and credited to the Lennon–McCartneypartnership. Written in Rishikesh during the group's trip to India in early 1968, it was inspired by actress Mia Farrow's sister, Prudence Farrow, who became obsessive about meditating while practising with Maharishi Mahesh Yogi.[2] Her designated partners on the meditation course, Lennon and George Harrison, attempted to coax Farrow out of her seclusion, which led to Lennon writing the song. Lennon wrote "Dear Prudence" using a finger-picking guitar technique that he learned from singer-songwriter Donovan. Its lyrics are simple and innocent and celebrate the beauty of nature. The Beatles recorded the song at Trident Studios in late August 1968 as a three-piece after Ringo Starr temporarily left the group out of protest at McCartney's criticism of his drumming on "Back in the U.S.S.R." and the tensions that typified the sessions for the White Album. Dear Prudence" has received praise from music critics, with many praising its lyrics and the band's performance. Lennon later selected it as one of his favourite songs by the Beatles. The song has been covered by many artists, including the Jerry Garcia Band, Ramsey Lewis and Siouxsie and the Banshees, whose version was a top-five hit in the UK in 1983. SHOW #4:           No Men In No Man'sTAB (Casey Sax solo)11.19.2022Reading PA:55 – 2:03TAB's James Casey…Smokin Sax Solo. Michael Price is an Emmy Award winning composer and pianist. You've undoubtably heard his work on the BBC's Sherlock, ITV's Unforgotten, and the 2020 Dracula series written by Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat that I've been obsessed with – no seriously, I must have watched it ten times now - since the moment it aired. In and amongst that he's worked on the Paul W.S. Anderson cult space horror Event Horizon, The Iron Giant – another film I'm fairly obsessed with – Hot Fuzz, The Lord Of The Rings movies… and Goal!, which I watched on a plane once and thought was terrible, but I don't think you can blame Michael for any of that. He's worked with the great David Arnold and the late, great Michael Kamen, and recently I've become a big fan of his solo work, especially his most recent release, the haunting Whitsun. You don't have to bend my arm to speak to a fellow Yorkshireman and I think you'll enjoy this inspiring and illuminating conversation just as much as I enjoyed having it.Join the Substack!

Michael Price joins The Film Scorer for episode 2 of season 3! You might be most familiar with Michael Price (at least I was) from his work with David Arnold on the acclaimed and excellent Sherlock and Dracula series, both created by Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat. But Michael also spent five years working with Michael Kamen, beginning on Event Horizon and X-Men, and music edited a number of films including the entire Lord of the Rings trilogy. During our interview we talk about all of those. We also talk about, and cover most in-depth, Michael's latest solo album Whitsun, which becomes an intimate look at Michael's childhood in Yorkshire, a connection of sound and memory. It's a lovely, nostalgic album that's both sweet and melancholic, with a universality that conjures a sense of recollection no matter one's past.   As we wrapped up our chat, we began discussing the importance of music in one's life and Michael said: "If just one person made a little moment to play something or sing for themselves or with someone else in their family or with a friend, just that tiny one act I think is joyful and worthwhile…To anyone: if you do find yourself playing or singing, send me a note on Twitter, cheer us both up." So, if after listening you've found yourself playing or singing, but sure to let Michael know (and include me while you're at it).   Whitsun is available digitally and physically (via CD and cassette) on Michael's bandcamp, and digitally on all major platforms. Michael's scores are broadly available digitally and physically.   For those interested in Scored to Death: The Dark Art of Scary Movie Music, you can find out more information here: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/scoredtodeathmovie/scored-to-death-the-dark-art-of-scary-movie-music
