On n'a qu'à demander à Johnny.

Williams released numerous singles before his untimely death at 44 in 1988, but this is the only one that managed to crack the U.S. Black & Pop charts. He had no albums, however, only 45s. Note: This beautiful copy comes in a vintage Philadelphia Int'l Records factory sleeve. It has very nearly Mint labels and wax, and the audio sounds pristine Mint.

On February 8, 2022, composer John Williams turns 90 years old. To honour one of the greatest film composers of all time THE CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO PODCAST is proud to present a mammoth six-part podcast series dedicated to the five-time Academy Award winner. You might actually be familiar with this series already. I produced a similar series back in 2012 to celebrate Williams' 80th birthday. While that show was successful, I felt that it could be approved upon and updated.  So, I've used John Williams' birthday as an excuse to completely revamp the series by re-editing the scripts, re-recording all the dialogue and completely re-editing the shows. In addition, I will be producing a brand new sixth part to cover the years 2013-2021, which will launch on John Williams birthday, February 8, 2022.  A lot of effort and time went into producing this new version of the series and I hope you enjoy the results. In part one of this special, we will be presenting an overview of "Johnny" Williams' work spanning 1961-1969 including such television shows as CHECKMATE, LOST IN SPACE, THE TIME TUNNEL, LAND OF THE GIANTS and THE GHOSTBREAKER. We will also be presenting music from some of Williams' earliest film work including DIAMOND HEAD, HOW TO STEAL A MILLION, NONE BUT THE BRAVE, HEIDI, GOODBYE MR. CHIPS, THE REIVERS and much more. Enjoy! A big thank you goes out to the following who helped make this radio series possible: The John Williams Collection, The John Williams Fan Network, La La Land Records, GNP Crescendo Records, Sony Classical, Film Score Monthly, Varese Sarabande Records, Decca Records, Intrada Records, Quartet Records and Tim Burden. —— Special thanks to our Patreon supporters: Matt DeWater, David Ballantyne, Mindtrickzz, Joe Wiles, Rich Alves, Maxime, William Welch, Tim Burden, Alan Rogers, Dave Williams, Max Hamulyák, Jeffrey Graebner, Douglas Lacey, Don Mase, Victor Field, Jochen Stolz, Emily Mason, Eric Skroch, Alexander Schiebel, Alphonse Brown, John Link, Andreas Wennmyr, Matt Berretta, Eldaly Morningstar, Elizabeth, Glenn McDorman, Chris Malone, Steve Karpicz, Deniz Çağlar & Brent Osterberg. —— Cinematic Sound Radio is fully licensed to play music by SOCAN. A tribute to the legendary award-winning composer, arranger and orchestrator who collaborated with John Williams on many projects over the years, as remembered by his stepdaughter Renata Pompelli Featuring Special Guest Mike Matessino Hosted by Maurizio Caschetto and Tim Burden Among the collaborators who worked with John Williams during his long and distinguished career, Alexander Courage (1919-2008) certainly holds a very special place. Composer, arranger, orchestrator and conductor of rare skill and incredible bravura, Alexander Courage (affectionately named "Sandy" by his family and closest friends) is considered one of the best and most revered musicians who ever worked in Hollywood at least since the 1940s. His association with John Williams started way back in the mid-1950s, when Courage requested a young man named Johnny Williams to perform as pianist for the soundtrack of the 1957 film musical Funny Face starring Fred Astaire and Audrey Hepburn. Courage recommended Williams to Deutsch for orchestration duties on Some Like It Hot. Williams often spoke of Courage's importance as an arranger and orchestrator for the great MGM musicals of the 1950s, comparing him to great arrangers like Robert Russell Bennett and Conrad Salinger for his uncanny ability in creating a unique orchestral sound. Courage's collborations with John Williams continued also throughout the following decades. In 1970, Courage joined Williams as an orchestrator on Fiddler On The Roof, for which the composer won his first Academy Award (and thanked Courage during his speech). Courage also contributed orchestrations for The Poseidon Adventure (1972), The Cowboys (1972) and also some of Williams' blockbuster scores of the era including Superman and Return of the Jedi. One of their key collaborations was for the 1987 film Superman IV: The Quest For Peace, the last starring the beloved Christopher Reeve as the Man of Steel. Among his orchestration credits for John Williams are also major blockbuster scores including Home Alone, Hook and Jurassic Park. We're very honoured to have Alexander Courage's stepdaugher Renata Pompelli as the special guest of The Legacy of John Williams podcast to honour and celebrate Sandy's memory and legacy on the day of his 102nd birthday (December 10). Renata is the family's custodian of memories and historian In this conversation, she shares many affectionate memories of Alexander Courage, both as a man and as a musician, offering an intimate, caring and lovely portrait of one of Hollywood's true (and perhaps lesser-known) musical geniuses, including his long-standing friendship and working relationship with John Williams. The recently crowned Six Nations winner, Johnny Williams joins me on What a Lad this week and what a lad he is! At only 24 years old, the current Welsh international has had a rollercoaster career to date, with some incredible highs and some really low lows! Johnny started his professional rugby career at 18 years old, making his Premiership debut for London Irish. He then went on help England win the Junior RWC as he played a massive role for them. Then after being with London Irish through two relegations, a promotion and many injuries, he decided to move up to the Newcastle Falcons. In 2019 John boys career took a blow as he was diagnosed with testicular cancer which meant he had to go through surgery and chemotherapy. Obviously a extremely tough period for him to get through but hearing how he dealt with that set back and how quickly he recovered was inspiring. Then after moving to Wales to join the Scarletts, Johnny quickly made an impression and forced his way into the Wales international side. A side he grew up supporting with his Welsh father. As you'll hear in this episode Johnny is a great lad who has a huge future in the game. He's also doing some great work around testicular cancer awareness, if you feel ANY abnormalities in your balls please just go get them checked. If you enjoy this episode or know someone who you think would, then please share it, all shares are very much appreciated.

How can the grassroots Black movement for social justice bring real power for Black people? We’ll talk with a young scholar who says the movement should follow a path of “communalism.” And, a Black people’s movement is making itself felt in Argentina, a country that long pretended that it had no Black population to speak of.   But first – Joe Biden and Kamala Harris pulled off a cliff-hanger victory over Donald Trump, last week, largely on the strength of Black voters. We spoke with Dr. Johnny Williams, a professor of sociology at Trinity College, in Hartford, Connecticut. Dr. Williams says Joe Biden is no friend of the Black Lives Matter Movement.   Justin Lang is a doctoral candidate in Africana Studies at Brown University, and author of a scholarly article on former President Baraka Obama’s unsuccessful attempts to quell the movement to abolish prisons and the police. Lang predicts that a Joe Biden administration will also try to co-opt and confuse the Black movement.   The Black Lives Matter movement has spawned a number of political currents during its brief history. Shay Akil McLean espouses a politics of “communalism.” McLean is a doctoral candidate at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He wrote an article for Black Agenda Report on Black health. We asked McLean to explain what he means by “communalism.” The South American nation of Argentina, like the United States, was founded on the dead bodies of native peoples and the labor of Black slaves. But, for centuries Argentinians have pretended that its Black population had died off. Welcome to the radio magazine that brings you news, commentary and analysis from a Black Left perspective. I’m Margaret Kimberley, along with my co-host Glen Ford. Coming up: Among the demands on protesters lips and signs is Community Control of the Police. And, there’s nothing new about debates over the use of violence to get justice. A century and a half ago, some folks preached that the struggle against slavery should be non-violent. But first – in some cities, protesters have zeroed in on corporations that have gotten too cozy with the police. We spoke with Dr. Brittany Friedman, a professor of sociology specializing in Race and Rights at Rutgers University. Dr. Johnny Williams teaches at Trinity College, in Harford, Connecticut. He blames a self-serving Black leadership for selling out the poor. The demand for community control of the police drew a thousand activists to Chicago, last fall. The conference was organized by the National Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression, chaired by veteran activist Frank Chapman. He says community control of police is a demand whose time has come. It took thousands of atrocities, mass killings and other outrages by slaveholders before some white abolitionists finally recognized the necessity of violence to overthrow the system. Professor Jesse Olavsky is an historian at Duke University, and a scholar on resistance to slavery. She wrote a recent article about “Women, Vigilance Committees, and the Rise of Militant Abolitionism.

Coming up: Among the demands on protesters lips and signs is Community Control of the Police. And, there's nothing new about debates over the use of violence to get justice.

The Baton: A John Williams Musical Journey

During a break in recording the score for Valley of the Dolls (the subject of the next episode), John Williams decided to take on a comedy film starring Dick Van Dyke fresh off his eponymous TV show. "Fitzwilly" featured a stately comic main theme for the main character, a butler who moonlights as a thief to fund his employer's bank account. Williams also composed a decent love theme, made into a song by the soon-to-be-famous team of Alan and Marilyn Bergman. This film also marked the final time Williams would be credited as "Johnny Williams" onscreen, and his final comedy for 12 years. Host Jeff Commings analyzes the top moments in the score as we say goodbye to Williams' very impressive comedy film era.

Tonight's Jazz Feature was the last recording of one of tenor saxophonist Stan Getz' finest bands. This was a truly magical band that included Getz and valve trombonist Bob Brookmeyer, they both exhibited a genuine 6th sense and blended and played together so well. The band for this session was re-united for a series of concerts and this recording done in Los Angeles on November 9,1954. There was only one change in personnel and that was bassist Bill Anthony who replaced the original bassist, Teddy Kotick. This band was together for a major part of 1953 and recorded extensively then re-united in 1954. The band consisted of Getz and Brookmeyer and a wonderful pianist from Vermont named Johnny Williams, The aforementioned Bill Anthony was on bass and a wonderful drummer who was a model of lightness and taste named Frank Isola. They recorded 6 tunes here, four standards and one Basie blues and an original by Brookmeyer and that was the end of what was arguably one of Stan Getz' best bands and for some people, one of the finest Jazz groups ever! The sound was cool and the music was hot!

This is one of the finest bands that tenor saxophone master Stan Getz ever led and yet it has not been very well documented on reissues. It began it's genesis on the East Coast but when Getz and his family moved to Los Angeles in 1953, Mr. Getz secured a long club engagement and brought this band out to the West.Norman Granz documented the band in the studio over several sessions and there is much to preserve. That is The Jazz feature for tonight. The band consisted of Stan Getz on tenor saxophone, Bob Brookmeyer on valve trombone, Johnny Williams on piano, Teddy Kotick on bass and the tasty Frank Isola on drums.Getz was at the top of his formidable game in 1953 and this band was one of his best. We'll hear 9 selections by this ensemble tonight. Check it out!

In March, Johnny Williams of Oakland, CA became one of 29 individuals exonerated in the US in 2013. Through the joint efforts of the No CA Innocence Project (NCIP) and the CA DNA Project, a federally funded unit at NCIP, Johnny was exonerated from 2 counts of forcible lewd conduct & one count of attempted rape of a 9-year-old girl. The girl said “Johnny” did it. Johnny, who was a neighbor & friend of the family, became the suspect. He was subsequently convicted and served 14 years in prison. A forensic examination of the girl's shirt prior to trial indicated no biological evidence; yet years later testing from both an independent lab & the police department lab yielded a male DNA profile conclusively excluding Johnny. Full disclosure: The host of this show was the defense investigator working for Johnny's attorney in the pre-trial investigation. Tune in to hear Johnny & his attorney, Melissa O'Connell, tell the story of this very unusual DNA exoneration.

Of all the bands that tenor saxophone giant Stan Getz put together, this one is the least documented. It was formed in 1953 and worked on the East Coast but Stan bought a house in Los Angeles and took the band out there to play gigs in that area. They made three recording sessions for Norman Granz in July and August 1953 and we'll hear some of the results of those. They were first issued on Granz' Clef and Norgran labels as "Interpretations #1 #2 #3 by the Stan Getz Quinttet".The group consisted of Getz, Bob Brookmeyer on valve trombone, Johnny Williams, piano, Teddy Kotick on bass and the underrated drummer Frank Isola. Getz and Brookmeyer had a unique musical chemistry that allowed them to weave lines together and improvise collectively almost like a modern Dixieland band, Pianist Johnny Williams' contributions to this band are enormous as he plays with the stabbing intensity of Horace Silver and Russ Freeman but sounds like only himself. Bassist Teddy Kotick was Charlie Parker's favourite and Bird called Teddy..."my heartbeat". Frank Isola was a subtle and swinging drummer who kept everything light and very swinging.Jimmy Giuffre said that this quintet was Stan Getz' best band and you'll hear why. It broke up in the late Fall of 1953 because of a lack of work but Getz re-united it for his legendary Shrine Auditorium concert in November 1954.
