This month, I was pleased to welcome back Dan Mecca & Conor O'Donnell, two friends & the hosts of The Film Stage's excellent podcast The B-Side, which covers movie stars in a fascinating way, by focusing not on the films that made or kept them famous but on the ones that actors made in between. Equally skilled at coming up with highly original show themes for their guest appearances here, Dan & Conor joined me in Season 4 to discuss the role of work in the films of director Ron Howard & in 2022, we focused on the transition that gifted crew members such as Jack Fisk & Douglas Trumbull made to the position of director. This season, they're back to celebrate the '90s to early aught renaissance of old-fashioned Errol Flynn-style swashbuckler pictures. Charting the resurgence in genre popularity after the surprise success of ROBIN HOOD: PRINCE OF THIEVES (& the Bryan Adams theme song), Dan & Conor walk listeners through the changes '90s filmmakers made from not only the '20s & '30s but also the sword spectaculars of their more fantastical '80s counterparts. Focusing primarily on the films FIRST KNIGHT, THE MASK OF ZORRO, THE COUNT OF MONTE CRISTO, & PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: THE CURSE OF THE BLACK PEARL, we dissect the style, actors, productions, & filmmakers of these films & others in this same genre or old-fashioned adventure epic mold from A KNIGHT'S TALE to THE MUMMY to CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON & beyond. Along the way, we coin a new catchphrase in "buckle some swash," I tell a story about a dude I went out with once who didn't realize that Keith Richards & Mick Jagger were two different people, & we go on several memorable tangents. It's a delightfully spirited feature-length chat that's fun for all... who are all for fun. Dan & Conor's Bio: A producer & filmmaker living in Pittsburgh, Dan Mecca started The Film Stage with Jordan Raup in college at Buffalo & Conor O'Donnell is a post-production supervisor based in New York City & also serves as a critic for The Film Stage. We're talking… underground Disney films, annoying Wolf & Owl catchphrases, Bill Burr in Unfrosted, memorising Robin Hood Prince Of Thieves, impressing girls with raps, Tom's 90's boyband, the rights and wrongs of ‘edgy' toothpastes, the amazingness of mint, a margarita thief and bad drunks. Plus, we play two banging country and western covers of our theme tune and answer an email question about first a relationship whilst at university. A 16-year-old boy was arrested Thursday in northern England in connection with what authorities described as the “deliberate” felling of a famous tree that had stood for nearly 200 years next to the Roman landmark Hadrian's Wall. Thousands of visitors each year walk along Hadrian's Wall, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that guarded the Roman Empire's northwestern frontier. Many have paused to admire and photograph the tree at Sycamore Gap, a beloved icon of the landscape that was made famous when it appeared in Kevin Costner's 1991 film “Robin Hood: Prince Of Thieves.” Photographs from the scene on early Thursday showed that the tree was cut down near the base of its trunk, with the rest of it lying on its side. Northumbria Police said the teen was arrested on suspicion of causing criminal damage. He was in police custody and assisting officers with their inquiries, the force said. “The tree is a world-renowned landmark and the vandalism has caused understandable shock and anger throughout the local community and beyond,” police said in a statement. “This is an incredibly sad day," police superintendent Kevin Waring said. “The tree was iconic to the North East and enjoyed by so many who live in or who have visited this region.” The Northumberland National Park authority asked the public not to visit the felled tree, which was voted English Tree of the Year in 2016. Alison Hawkins, who was walking on the Hadrian's Wall path, was one of the first people who saw the damage early Thursday. “It was a proper shock. It's basically the iconic picture that everyone wants to see," she said. “You can forgive nature doing it but you can't forgive that."See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In this week's episode we're closing out our Robin Hood trilogy with ROBIN HOOD: PRINCE OF THIEVES. It's been a bumpy ride with this legacy character so far...and that trend continues! We can't quite figure out if we like this one or not, but there's certainly qualities to this film that remain immensely nostalgic, and for good reason. What are you thoughts on this 1991 semi-classic?

In a special episode of the Film Stories podcast, Simon is joined by writers and producers Pen Densham and John Watson. Their story covers a lot of short films, working with Sylvester Stallone to reshape the ending of Rocky II, and the writing and producing 1991's Robin Hood: Prince Of Thieves. That involved a battle of the Robin Hoods too, and they also had Backdraft in production at the same time. The pair tell their stories in this episode, and there's just time at the end for a quick venture into The Dangerous Lives Of The Altar Boys too... Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Released in the summer of 1991, Robin Hood: Prince Of Thieves was a monster success that grossed over $165 million at the US box office and more than $390 million globally - a number which made it one of the biggest hits of the year. The success of the film, along with the massive Bryan Adams hit, (Everything I Do) I Do It for You means that it still resonates today. The classic Kevin Reyndolds directed adventure gives Kevin Costner's Robin Hood plenty of swash and buckle alongside Morgan Freeman's Merry Man, while a villainous Alan Rickman chews the scenery as the Sheriff of Nottingham. Hot on the heels of a fantastic new release by the aptly named Arrow Films, Pen Densham and John Watson, the writers of Robin Hood: Prince Of Thieves join the Movies In Focus podcast to talk about how the film came to be, its enduring legacy - and the sequel that never happened.
We start the year by talking about a teenage classic of mine: ROBIN HOOD - PRINCE OF THIEVES!Iniziamo l'anno parlando di un mio classico adolescenziale: ROBIN HOOD - PRINCIPE DEI LADRI!
In this episode of Film Stories with Simon Brew, a pair of 1990s summer blockbusters - one of which proved more problematic than the other.Come 1990 and there were three competing Robin Hood projects on the way from Hollywood. But it was 1991's Robin Hood: Prince Of Thieves that won the race to the screen. It'd be fair to say it was not an easy journey to get there.Off the back of making GoldenEye, Pierce Brosnan was looking for new projects - and he settled on a remake of The Thomas Crown Affair. Small problem though about trying to make a movie about a museum heist: museums don't seem very keen to let you film on their premises...Find Simon on Twitter at @simonbrew, and the podcast can be found at @filmstoriespod.Support this podcast: www.patreon.com/simonbrew. Is Robin Hood- Prince of Thieves Alan Rickman's best movie? Again, probably yes. Give the episode a listen and then better yet, go watch the movie. We promise it's worth it.

Daniel was the first professional prosthetic professional to look at my portfolio. That stuff sticks with you. That was back in 1994, and there was still a lot of Frankenstein stuff kicking about in the workshop from the previous year. I learned a lot being in that workshop, and got to see a makeup test on Ian McKellan for Richard III in my time there. Daniel has recently been praised for his work as makeup and hair designer on The Queens Gambit (Netflix) and Chernobyl (HBO). He has an extensive range of credits spanning 37 years, including Zero Dark Thirty, The Hurt Locker, Band Of Brothers, Frankenstein (Academy Award nominee) Empire Of The Sun, Cloud Atlas, Robin Hood: Prince Of Thieves and Enemy Mine. In this conversation, we talked about how often simple techniques and good paintwork can do so much and using appliances wisely. It is very easy for an artist to fall in love with the processes and things they have learned, and to decide to inflict themselves as extensively as possible on anything they do. Instead, the aim is to see the full picture and work with the raw material of the performer and make only the correct changes for the character. Daniel also is a director at his temporary Tattoo company, TattooedNow! which he runs with Serbian artists Igor Strangliczky and Nikola Prijic. ---------------------------------- Many thanks as always for your time checking the stuff out. Screenwriter Ian Shorr, who sold a futuristic version of THE COUNT OF MONTE CRISTO to Warner Brothers, joins the show to discuss the 2002 Jim Caviezel and Guy Pearce version, directed by ROBIN HOOD: PRINCE OF THIEVES director Kevin Reynolds, adapted by PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN scribe Jay Wolpert. Featuring one of the great late-career turns by Richard Harris and a teenaged pre-Superman Henry Cavill, this movie is fun, funny, and maybe one of the last great classic adventure films. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/dan-benamor/support

Welcome back, everyone! This is part two of my investigation into music of the popular cop/action film series, LETHAL WEAPON, composed by Michael Kamen, Eric Clapton and David Sanborn, and its fusion of rock, blues and orchestral stylings. In part one, I focused on the original, released in 1987, and the first sequel, along with presenting contextual examples from scores for police and detective movies which preceded this series. Here, I continue on into LETHAL WEAPON 3 (1992) and LETHAL WEAPON 4 (1998) while for context I touch upon other scores by Michael Kamen from around the same time period. In the late 1980's and throughout much of the 90's, Kamen's stirring approach of orchestral acrobatics defined the sound of cinematic action, including genre highlights such as DIE HARD, HUDSON HAWK and ROBIN HOOD: PRINCE OF THIEVES. Stay safe out there, take care of yourself and each other! On this very special LIVE episode, live because children run back and forth and we only use minimal edits, Lars and I talk about life under Coronavirus, how ROBIN HOOD: PRINCE OF THIEVES was a staple of our childhood, Lars steals a Bill Murray speech, how FROZEN 2 was a better sequel than we ever got, the strange things that we've been going through not going anywhere, and how THE ADVENTURER: CURSE OF THE MIDAS BOX was a very weird movie. Hope you folks stick around, we're not going anywhere for a while.
The Greatest Film You've Never Seen is a podcast where comedians Si Beckwith and Ken McGuinness chat to guests about the best, most interesting and most revered films that have passed them by.Using IMDBs 'Top 250' as a jumping off point, they ask the fascinating folk they've invited along which of these unmissable films they've missed. This episode they're joined by actress, theatremaker and super talented Sarah Seymour (also one half of Timeworks Theatre with partner John Seymour who was an excellent guest in episode 2). Sarah discusses not having seen The Godfather (which Si has also NOT seen, blummin' heck) and there is A LOT of Robin Hood: Prince Of Thieves chat. Arguably too much chat, but we'll take up that argument with anyone! The Greatest Film You've Never Seen is a Hope For Proles production. Music comes from Static Blue. This week restaurant critic and food writer Tom Parker Bowles is sat in the hottest of seats upon the mighty TickyOff. Imagine an internally heated saddle on a TickyOff shaped horse, that's the vibe and that's why cowboys wear chaps. Heat dispersion. Things get off to a Brexit-themed start as Tom talks about Brexit. That doesn't last long however as he then tells all about tabloid stings, death metal versus bagpipes and firing guns off the back of a flatbed truck in Guadalajara. Also this week, James has crumbs on his lip, is making kombucha and wasn't allowed to watch the start of ‘Robin Hood: Prince Of Thieves'. We learn that Sam loves grouper, Tom finds dolphins sinister and James makes an incredibly niche indie-rock circa 2003 reference. And if this episode wasn't stuffed full enough with fat topics like a pod-based cotechino sausage, there's also fun at a medieval fayre, a haunted tudor mansion, William Sitwell stealing people's lines on ‘Masterchef' and…….Sam and James go to a Smeg showroom. If that isn't a mountain based Sly Stallone vehicle with a hell of an opening scene, I don't know what is. This week's episode is sponsored by the incredibly gifted archers, whittlers, weavers and wine experts at dropwine.co.uk
