Ramblin is back - and we're more Geisha than ever. After an extended summer break, the boys are back to continue down the Amblin road, staying in 2005 to explore Rob Marshall's period drama MEMOIRS OF A GEISHA, based on Arthur Golden's novel of the same name. To chart the journey of young Chiyo's self-discovery and efforts to become a Geisha in pre and post-WW2 Japan, we welcome back returning guest, friend and film journalist Barry Levitt. Together, we discuss the film's origins, its questionable sense of authorship and posit the question; could this film -  a follow-up for a filmmaker who just won Best Picture for a musical adaptation that revived the genre - have worked better as, well, a musical? You can follow Barry on Twitter and Letterboxd @blevitt93 , and catch his writing over at the likes of Vulture, The Daily Beast, Empire, LA Times, Rolling Stone and more. Follow the podcast on Twitter (@RamblinAmblin) and be sure to like and subscribe so you don't miss an episode! Get in touch with us either via Twitter or email rambinaboutamblin@gmail.com. Please feel free to give us a 5-star review, share your favourite Amblin movies and tell us if ET makes you cry. Ramblin is created and produced by Andrew Gaudion and Joshua Glenn. A special thanks as always to Emily Tatham for the artwork, and Robert J. Hunter & Greg Sheffield for the theme music.

Our Period Princess continues with Rob Marshall's Memoirs of a Geisha (2005) A sweeping romantic epic set in Japan in the years before World War II, a penniless Japanese child is torn from her family to work as a maid in a geisha house. Directed by Rob and produced by a whole bunch of the white guys, Memoirs of a Geisha started out as a smash hit bestseller, also written by a white guy, Arthur Golden. This adaptation was criticized for casting non-Japanese actors in lead roles but was nominated for six Academy Awards and won three,  Best Cinematography, Best Art Direction and Best Costume Design. So is this memoir something worth opening or was it a story "that should never be told" as the opening narration states?

The confessions of one of Japan's most celebrated geisha.Speaking to us with the wisdom of age and in a voice at once haunting and startlingly immediate, Nitta Sayuri tells the story of her life as a geisha. It begins in a poor fishing village in 1929, when, as a nine-year-old girl with unusual blue-gray eyes, she is taken from her home and sold into slavery to a renowned geisha house. We witness her transformation as she learns the rigorous arts of the geisha: dance and music; wearing kimono, elaborate makeup, and hair; pouring sake to reveal just a touch of inner wrist; competing with a jealous rival for men's solicitude and the money that goes with it. In Memoirs of a Geisha, we enter a world where appearances are paramount; where a girl's virginity is auctioned to the highest bidder; where women are trained to beguile the most powerful men; and where love is scorned as illusion. It is a unique and triumphant work of fiction—at once romantic, erotic, suspenseful—and completely unforgettable. Tuesday's Book Club is a bi-weekly podcast series that dives into some of the most inspirational stories of all time, such as this one. The show is hosted by Nova Lorraine, founder of Raine Magazine, and her two co-hosts: Tobi Santagado and Barbara Donato. This week, Michelle Yeoh dives back in to American films with a story steeped in Japanese culture... or at least, the filmmakers would have you believe that. We're talking MEMOIRS OF A GEISHA today, winner of three Oscars but a film that was heavily criticized for its inaccuracies regarding Japan, starting with the fact that its three lead actresses are... not Japanese. But is there still enough that works in this handsomely-produced period film to recommend it?

Created by Marian Russell. SUMMARY: I delve into the history and controversies surrounding the novel and movie, Memoirs of a Geisha. I bring in different articles and viewpoints and I interview Disney Plus actress Juliana Cifuentes to delve more into the intricacies behind casting and race in the film industry. Ultimately, we both come to the conclusion that the choice of a Chinese actor for a traditional Japanese role was a culmination of ignorance, disregard, and plain racism by a white casting director and crew. This week we visit pre-WWII Japan in Memoirs of a Geisha. This movie… is well… a doozy. Based off the controversial fictional novel of the same name, both versions try to grasp at Japanese sub-culture through a western lens. We get to feast on beautiful set design and costumes, and of course John Williams masterful score, but the jumbled mess of melodrama and the creepy “romance”  makes this movie nothing but pretty makeup on a turd. John Williams wanted to be the composer for the film version of the novel "Memoirs of a Geisha" long before a script was written or a budget finalized. He realized the opportunity to infuse Japanese flavors into a Westernized score, and he enlisted the help of previous collaborators Yo-Yo Ma and Itzhak Perlman to play on the cello and violin, respectively. Host Jeff Commings talks about the themes in the score, and examines the scenes in which three Japanese instruments are highlighted throughout the film. Though the movie did not gain a Best Picture Oscar nomination as hoped, the film did garner some praise for Williams' score, and he was celebrated during awards season. John Williams is one of the most successful and most identifiable of all Hollywood composers, with the likes of Star Wars, Harry Potter, ET, Jurassic Park, Indiana Jones, Saving Private Ryan and Schindler's List to his credit. But what might the Williams legacy be had Steven Spielberg and George Lucas turned to other composers to write their scores? Matthew looks back over John Williams’ long career and celebrates his associations with the likes of Oliver Stone, Robert Altman, Irwin Allen and Alfred Hitchcock. The programme features music from ‘How To Steal A Million’, Lost In Space’, ‘Land Of The Giants’, ‘The Valley Of The Dolls’, ‘Images’, ‘The Long Goodbye’, ‘The Towering Inferno’, ‘Black Sunday’, ‘Family Plot’, ‘The Fury’, ‘Dracula’, ‘The Witches Of Eastwick’, ‘Home Alone’, ‘Memoirs Of A Geisha’, ‘The Book Thief’ and ‘Jane Eyre’. par Benoit Basirico Diffusée sur Aligre FM En Replay sur Cinezik.fr John Williams, tel un aventurier de la musique, a pu au gré des pays traversés par les personnages et les films, intégrer dans ses partitions des éléments folkloriques et traditionnels.

Welcome to the next new episode of the podcast! In this installment I am returning to my focus on that most well-known, renowned and world-famous film composer, John Williams. In Part 1 I charted Williams's career beginning with his TV and early film work in the 1960's and progressed through the 70's, while spotlighting themes and scores that often go unheralded or overlooked. Here in Part 2 I continue on from the 1980's into the current era of his marvelous contributions to cinema, again highlighting often overlooked scores that were composed alongside the popular blockbusters. These include titles such as MONSIGNOR, THE ACCIDENTAL TOURIST, JFK, SEVEN YEARS IN TIBET and MEMOIRS OF A GEISHA.      Connect with the podcast on Facebook and Twitter: www.facebook.com/ascoretosettle https://twitter.com/score2settlepod   Email the show at ascoretosettlepodcast@gmail.com

Memoirs of a Geisha tells the story of Sayuri, a geisha in Gion, the geisha district of Kyoto, Japan. It opens with a chapter in the first person, narrated by a “translater” who supposedly received the memoirs of Sayuri in her later life, while she was living in New York. The rest of the book is narrated in the first person by Sayuri herself, and moves linearly through her life, from her first memories of being a child in a fishing village, through being taken to Kyoto and effectively being sold as a slave, to her life as a geisha, her experiences during the war, and her later life in New York.
