Synopsis “This highway leads to the shadowy tip of reality: you're on a through-route to the land of the different, the bizarre, the unexplainable... Go as far as you like on this road. Its limits are only those of mind itself. Ladies and Gentlemen, you're entering the wondrous dimension of imagination…” Next stop The DATEBOOK Zone. OK, all kidding aside, but “submitted for your approval” as Rod Serling would say, this is the COMPOSERS DATEBOOK for September 30th. I'm John Birge. On today's date in 1960, the second season of “The Twilight Zone,” — the legendary TV series created by Mr. Serling — began airing on CBS. For this, the producers added a new signature theme written by Marius Constant, a Romanian-born French composer. Constant had studied composition with Olivier Messiaen, Arthur Honegger, and Nadia Boulanger and had a very respectable career as a composer and teacher, but he's best known for his brief, but iconic, “Twilight Zone” theme. During its five-season run, that show also employed the talents of other famous composers, including Jerry Goldsmith, Leonard Rosenman, Fred Steiner, and Franz Waxman. And in case you're wondering who wrote the theme for the FIRST season of “The Twilight Zone,” well, that was another famous Hollywood composer by the name of Bernard Herrmann. Music Played in Today's Program Marius Constant (1925-2004): The Twilight Zone Main Theme (2nd version) –Orchestra; Joel McNeely, cond. (Varese-Sarabande VSD2-6087) Bernard Herrmann (1911-1975): The Twilight Zone Main Theme (1st version) –Orchestra; Joel McNeely, cond. (Varese-Sarabande VSD2-6087)

Now that we have finished cataloging the scores to the Skywalker Saga, I thought we would do something a little bit different. In 1996, Lucasfilm created a multimedia campaign aimed at filling in the gap between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. This was called Shadows of the Empire. In this story, our heroes attempt to save Han Solo before he is delivered to Jabba the Hutt, while the evil Prince Xizor seeks to murder Luke Skywalker in order to discredit Darth Vader in the eyes of the Emperor. Scottish composer Joel McNeely creates this unique score which is based on the novelization of this story as opposed to a film. Join with me as we discuss the results. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/pageturnerstheywerenot/support

Attack of the Killer Soundtrack - Episode 47 This week we talk with composer Erich Stem about the music he was influenced by, as well as the challenges you face when trying to break into the field as a working film composer. And as we discuss all the fun of alcoholism and early death, we also bring up... horrible MIDI, entering the NBA, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, an eleventh hour process, Alcatraz, musical sentences and sound worlds, Japanese internment camps, young composers, you've gotta MacGuyver this thing, I was always very interested in tearing apart the music that I learned, I would write her the hard parts, my dream as a composer is to do my own thing, a makeshift skateboard, the soprano saxophone part, Joel McNeely, write for orchestras in different cities, you are kind of combining a lot of different things - and putting a new stamp on it, the music being the guide to the film, and you could be crazy, I saw the movie and immediately thought… what a really interesting job, I just would spend hours at the piano writing music, a piece is very much like a film. You have that kind of shape, the early days of the internet, Mason Bates, Bainbridge Island, it could be anything that you wanted it to be, a compiled library of music, feeding me new styles or sounds, poverty inspires creativity, pretty amazing and chilling at the same time, changing my language based on my new exposures, violin duets, hope that you can still do more music, you and your stupid talent, you're basically asked to write these wonderful pieces, that move a lot of people, post-minimalism, John Dugan, using sound, making it into one language and train sets. "I believe that as a composer, and maybe this is true of filmmakers too, you're giving your unique stamp to your art... but you are, in a way, an amalgamation of your experiences. And your reactions to those experiences."

Cinematic Sound Radio - Soundtracks, Film, TV and Video Game Music

On this week’s episode of CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO, I will be celebrating the 21st anniversary of the program. With each anniversary program, I try to present a topic or theme that I haven’t explored in the past. With that in mind, I thought it might be interesting to present for you a few of my personal custom film music suites that I like to edit together in my spare time. I don’t create suites for every score in my collection but I have roughly 75-80 specially edited suites, which combine multiple cues into one easy to digested track that ranges from roughly 4 minutes in length to as long as 10 minutes. It’s a fun exercise and I hope you enjoy listening to my creations as much as I do. On today’s program you are going to hear 12 of those suites, which features music from THE AVENGERS by Joel McNeely, THE PROMISE by Klaus Badelt, BATMAN FOREVER by Elliot Goldenthal, PAYCHECK by John Powell, THE THREE MUSKETEERS by Michael Kamen, PERCY JACKSON & THE OLYMPIANS: THE LIGHTNING THIEF by Christophe Beck, PETER PAN by James Newton Howard, THE ROCKETEER by James Horner, GODZILLA by David Arnold, SKY CAPTAIN AND THE WORLD OF TOMORROW by Edward Shearmur, THE KARATE KID PART I AND II by Bill Conti and WARRIORS OF VIRTUE by Don Davis. Cinematic Sound Radio - Soundtracks, Film, TV and Video Game Music

Over the past few years, we hear at CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO have been paying our respects to two-time Academy Award winning composer James Horner with various radio specials including a four hour plus special produced a few days after his death. We also produced a two-part series last year featuring some of his lesser known film scores. Jason Drury has also been producing an epic three-part radio documentary in Horner’s honour. The third and final part of that program is scheduled to be released next week right here on CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO. James Horner was part of a holy trinity of film composers I grew up with admiring. The others were John Williams and Jerry Goldsmith. Those three brought me into the world of film music with their timeless and classic scores and made me a fan of this art form for life. Todays program is dedicated to re-recorded James Horner music. Fans of the show know of my love for re-recordings or new recordings of previously existing scores so I thought this would be a unique way to mark the 2nd anniversary of James Horner’s passing. Today’s program will include performances by The City of Prague Philharmonic, The Cincinnati Pops Orchestra, The Boston Pops Orchestra, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra. Cinematic Sound Radio - Soundtracks, Film, TV and Video Game Music

On May 25, 1977 Star Wars was released and proceeded to become one of the most popular and most profitable films of all time. To honour the 40th anniversary of this ground-breaking film CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO is proud to present music from all seven of John Williams’ film scores – STAR WARS, THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK, RETURN OF THE JEDI, THE PHANTOM MENACE, ATTACK OF THE CLONES, REVENGE OF THE SITH and THE FORCE AWAKENS. We will also be featuring music from Joel McNeely’s score to the 1996 novel SHADOWS OF THE EMPIRE, Kevin Kiner’s score to the 2008 3D animated film STAR WARS: THE CLONE WARS, and two separate STAR WARS related video games – THE FORCE UNLEASHED, and KINECT STAR WARS. And we’ll end off the program with a suite of music from Michael Giachino’s ROGUE ONE. As we did with our RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK 30th ANNIVERSARY program we will be presenting alternate recordings of John Williams’ music from the seven films he has scored thus far. Cinematic Sound Radio - Soundtracks, Film, TV and Video Game Music

Cinematic Sound Radio turns 17 this month so as I do every year (except last year) I make a valiant attempt at coming up with a topic or theme that I have never before explored on the show. This year I’m going to play for you some of my favourite end credit cues. These are by no means the definitive best of the best but I think this show features a fine selection of end credit cues from the most iconic to the more obscure. So, on this special three hour program you will hear music Alan Silvestri, James Horner, John Debney, John Williams, Joel McNeely, David Shire, David Arnold, Mark Snow and many others. Special thanks to David Coscina who composed the NEW Cinematic Sound Radio’s fanfare. We have retired the 20th Century Fox fanfare and will now be opening up all programs with Coscina’s new theme. And a big special thanks goes out to film music journalist and historian Jon Burlingame for his invaluable assistance on this show.
