In this powerful episode, Karyne sits down with UK's Jamelia Donaldson, the brilliant founder of Treasure Tress, to discuss how she built a global hair care subscription brand rooted in representation, intention, and legacy. Together, they explore what it means to lead with curated confidence—from product development to purpose-driven leadership—and how Gen Z and Gen Alpha are reshaping the beauty economy.
Jamelia Donaldson is the founder and CEO of TreasureTress — a monthly product subscription service for girls and women with kinky-curly hair and also the co-creator of The Teen Experience, a monthly workshop series which offers young black women to attend a series of personal development workshops, network with other like-minded individuals and be inspired by mature and successful women. Workshops to date have included creating vision boards and discussions about self-care. Since launching in 2015, with a huge online community, and an active and thriving offline presence, Treasure Tress has proven that natural hair and black sisterhood can truly go hand in hand. As a solution to the beauty industry's difficulty connecting to their Black, female consumer in the UK, Jamelia added a consultancy arm to TreasureTress as a way to guide brands in the US on the unique experience of the Black, UK natural hair consumer. Providing them with strategy, social, digital and influencer marketing. Jamelia has been featured in Forbes, Buzzfeed, Good Housekeeping and Pride Magazine just to name a few. For years retail environments for black hair care products and services have been lacking the same upmarket aesthetic and customer service promoted by the beauty industry targeting those outside of the black community. With black consumers now suffering issues of abuse, neglect and racism when buying the hair care products they need, it's more important than ever to lift up, promote and support black owned businesses serving the community. I speak to CEO of natural product discovery box TreasureTress, Jamelia Donaldson, who joins me to discuss raising the bar for the black beauty industry, and why re-aligning the standard for black hair care to global beauty standards is so important.FOLLOW JAMELIA ON SOCIALS:INSTAGRAM TIKTOK FOLLOW TREASURETRESS:INSTAGRAM TIKTOK WEBSITE FOLLOW TEXTURE TALKS ON SOCIALS:INSTAGRAM TIKTOK WEBSITESPONSORS:INSTAGRAM WEBSITE Teresa and Eleanore Richardson from Fulham Scalp and Hair Clinic are an absolutely INCREDIBLE black female mother daughter led team of highly experienced Consultant Trichologists who since 2011 have provided the afro and curly haired community with help, support and guidance to get our hair care journeys back on track. As such highly respected Afro hair Trichologists I couldn't think of a better sponsor to partner with on the next segment of Texture Talks and to guide me personally on my own natural hair care journey.Learn more about them at www.fulhamscalphairclinic.com and use discount code TEXTURETALKS5 for 5% off your consultation fee.
Jamelia Donaldson, the visionary behind TreasureTress, serves as its founder and CEO, steering the ship since its inception in 2015. TreasureTress stands out as a monthly product subscription service catering to girls and women with kinky-curly hair. With a robust online community and a thriving offline presence, the brand has successfully demonstrated the harmonious intersection of natural hair appreciation and black sisterhood. Her initial exposure to the subscription box model during her time in New York sparked a realisation of its untapped potential. Inspired by success stories like Dollar Shave Club and Birchbox, Jamelia envisioned a hair product subscription box tailored for and by black women in the UK. Thus, after rigorous research and fueled by a desire to simplify the product discovery journey for young black women, TreasureTress was born. In response to the beauty industry's struggle to connect with Black female consumers in the UK, Jamelia expanded TreasureTress to include a consultancy arm. This strategic move aims to guide brands in the US, offering insights into the unique preferences and experiences of Black, UK natural hair consumers. The consultancy provides expertise in strategy, social media, digital marketing, and influencer engagement. Jamelia's entrepreneurial journey and impact have garnered recognition from notable publications such as Forbes, Buzzfeed, Good Housekeeping, and Pride Magazine. Jamelia Donaldson is a beauty founder and entrepreneur of Treasure Tress, Europes largest subscription box for naturally kinky, curly hair. She posts a lot on her social media pages about empowerment, loving yourself as you are and really celebrating being enough be being you..so as soon as I came across her profile I knew that she had to be on the podcast. She has a really realistic approach to mindset, entrepreneur ship and self love which I find refreshing in a space where we are bombarded with content and insight into how we should all live and love ourselves. Jamelia seems to have created her own version of what self empowerment means and I found it really interesting to dig into it. We go through the journey of how Treasure Tress was built, mainly from Jamelia's own frustrations and experiences of the lack of hair care available to her. She shares the risks that she took along the way and believing in herself to create a business and a life that she loves living. If there is one thing to take away from this episode, its to remove all of the pressure that you are putting on yourself to be perfect, to be like them, to constantly practise self love and to just learnt o be yourself. Live your life, be you focus on being content and do what makes your happy. Building a brand teaches you many lessons and requires a variety of skills. Multitasking and exercising your creative muscles appear at the top of that list of skills! Doing everything in your business is a blessing a curse. The blessing - you know how everything functions and can train others. The curse - you're strapped from time and capacity. Creativity is a necessary ingredient for the formulation of any brand yet how does one protect their ideas? Pitching to clients is essential for B2B businesses but how do you avoid your ideas being stolen? We switched positions for a second episode, and in this episode Jevetta Boyce asked me (Jamelia Donaldson) a few burning questions she had on the start up journey of TreasureTress. We hope you enjoy!
