From Huddersfield to Bangkok, pop fans - are you ready for an adventure? Join Joel and David as they kick start a new ‘Discovering' series where they each pick a hidden gem of an artist from the 2000s and select 5 songs from their catalogue for a taste test! Signed to Jive Records and launched in 1999, British pop starlet Ellie Campbell looked and sounded like a ready-made pop star here for the GMTV and Smash Hits audience! Despite having no formal singing or dance training, Ellie's warm soulful tone and star quality was undeniable. The Yorkshire songstress worked with same hitmakers behind Steps (Pete Waterman, Mark Topham, Karl Twigg), launched a handful of singles - including the UK Top 30 smash ‘So Many Ways' - and even found herself performing at the Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras! Though she wasn't in the pop game for long, Ellie's bops are forever - and her self-titled album “Ellie” is a real gem!  Before LISA from BLACKPINK, in the 2000s, the world had Thai pop princess Tata Young. Her crossover success in Japan, India, China and across Southeast Asia was pretty much unheard of. Thanks in huge part to her fun signature banger and your new favourite bratty anthem: ‘Sexy, Naughty, Bitchy' (co-written by legendary pop songwriter Savan Kotecha, who has worked with Ariana Grande, Britney, One Direction, and Dannii Minogue).   Tata's catalogue of English tunes is top-tier, as she brings her Main Pop Girl Energy to songs that would be released in the West by Ashley Tisdale, The Cheetah Girls, Play and more. The writing credits on her three English albums read like a ‘who's who' of RBAY! royalty - Jamelia, Leona Lewis, Natasha Bedingfield, Samantha Jade etc.  If you're liking this ‘Discovering' concept - let Joel and David know in the comments who you'd like us to cover next!  Follow Right Back At Ya! https://www.instagram.com/rightbackpod/ https://twitter.com/rightbackpod https://www.facebook.com/rightbackpod Follow Joel https://www.instagram.com/dr_joelb/ https://twitter.com/DR_JoelB Follow David https://www.instagram.com/lovelimmy/ https://twitter.com/lovelimmy Email us rightbackpod@gmail.com

So much so he gave it five stars on Good Reads!Sadly there was an horrific terror attack in Madrid, Spain this time 20 years ago when simultaneous bombs were detonated across the rail network resulting in the deaths of around 200 people and injuries to thousands of others. In music news J-Kwon got tipsy, Jamelia became a superstar and Brian McFadden shocked the world when he quit Westlife. Also as we celebrate 20 years since Britney Spears unleashed the single for Toxic, we explore the origins of the pop hit (fun fact, it was initially pitched to Kylie Minogue, but she turned it down!).In TV news the hideous reality show “Playing it Straight” debuted. It involved 14 men trying t9 win the heart of a young lady, however half of them were gay. What a twist! Jamelia Donaldson, the visionary behind TreasureTress, serves as its founder and CEO, steering the ship since its inception in 2015. TreasureTress stands out as a monthly product subscription service catering to girls and women with kinky-curly hair. With a robust online community and a thriving offline presence, the brand has successfully demonstrated the harmonious intersection of natural hair appreciation and black sisterhood. Her initial exposure to the subscription box model during her time in New York sparked a realisation of its untapped potential. Inspired by success stories like Dollar Shave Club and Birchbox, Jamelia envisioned a hair product subscription box tailored for and by black women in the UK. Thus, after rigorous research and fueled by a desire to simplify the product discovery journey for young black women, TreasureTress was born. In response to the beauty industry's struggle to connect with Black female consumers in the UK, Jamelia expanded TreasureTress to include a consultancy arm. This strategic move aims to guide brands in the US, offering insights into the unique preferences and experiences of Black, UK natural hair consumers. The consultancy provides expertise in strategy, social media, digital marketing, and influencer engagement. Jamelia's entrepreneurial journey and impact have garnered recognition from notable publications such as Forbes, Buzzfeed, Good Housekeeping, and Pride Magazine. WARNING!This episode contains scenes of graphic and often gratuitous pop perfection. Listener discretion is advised.Summer 2004. The wettest summer in the UK for fifty years, and with it being another three years before Rihanna invents the umbrella, there is a need for something more drastic to help dodge the dampness. So where does one shelter from the storm? Well, certainly not the World Cup, at the cinema it's a web-spinning yawn with Spider-Man 2 and TV offers up the first Strictly winning couple….who were of course…erm…shuffles notes…any-way…Of course, the real protection from a soggy summer is always POP and who better to serve up a slice of the latest and greatest top chart hits, than the ever resplendent NOW, Thats What I Call Music team, with it's 58th wonderful offering of 42 tracks. Phew, what a scorcher!(Adopts serious journalistic look) But what was the state of the pop landscape in the year 2004?Actually, let's not beat about the proverbial bush, Smash Hits would have confirmed at the top of its glittery lungs, Very Healthy Indeed, thankyouverymuch. The wizardry of pop's perfect professors such as Richard X and Xenomania were dazzling us with their weird and wonderful masterpieces as served up deliciously by the likes of Rachel (it's not anything like Goldfrapp) Stevens, Girls (who sang that line, Miranda?) Aloud and Sugababes version 2.0 (or was it 3.4?). Jamelia, Kelis and Christina Millian were proving that the girls could indeed more than hold their own with their ‘flavas' (really - ED?) of r'n'b. And ver lads McFly and Busted (only slightly conjoined, obviously) were reclaiming power pop, silly hairstyles, big eyebrows and reinventing the boyband in the process - again, with full apologies to anyone who was on ‘that' Air France flight (yeuch!)And of course there was SO much more! Franz Ferdinand and Scissor Sisters continuing to sell supermarket CDs to everyone, George Michael flying a flawless flag, Britney being weird, delicate and dead all at once and some couple called Eamon and Frankee, who weren't a couple at all, were very potty mouthed and (checks notes) WON STRICTLY! Possibly. So, who better to steer us through this spectacular summer of sonic supremacy than writer, journalist and tall person Michael Cragg. In celebration of Michael's utterly smashing book Reach For The Stars, Fame, Fallout and Pop's Final Party 1996-2006, we explore the stories behind many of the tracks on NOW58, a time of pop perfection but as always much, much more behind the curtain. Michael also reveals his first (king of) pop passions, how he escaped a shoe shop to discover his own musical journey and why Louis Walsh (and not for the first time) was very wrong about pop indeed!Along the way expect memorable and possibly even knowing nods towards Popjustice, MySpace, CDUK, Geri Halliwells's dogs, Kimberley the BOSS and absolutely nothing about The Rasmus, O-Zone or Fatman Scoop. Was it all a sugar-induced, pop fever dream? Possibly, but isn't it fun after all these years later heading back for one more bite…? Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Jamelia Donaldson is a beauty founder and entrepreneur of Treasure Tress, Europes largest subscription box for naturally kinky, curly hair. She posts a lot on her social media pages about empowerment, loving yourself as you are and really celebrating being enough be being you..so as soon as I came across her profile I knew that she had to be on the podcast. She has a really realistic approach to mindset, entrepreneur ship and self love which I find refreshing in a space where we are bombarded with content and insight into how we should all live and love ourselves. Jamelia seems to have created her own version of what self empowerment means and I found it really interesting to dig into it. We go through the journey of how Treasure Tress was built, mainly from Jamelia's own frustrations and experiences of the lack of hair care available to her. She shares the risks that she took along the way and believing in herself to create a business and a life that she loves living. If there is one thing to take away from this episode, its to remove all of the pressure that you are putting on yourself to be perfect, to be like them, to constantly practise self love and to just learnt o be yourself. Devin: What do you see as your superpower?Tevin: What I would say is empathy. I'd probably say I feel that I'm an empathetic person.“My personal mission is literally to build a better world for us all,” says British podcast host Tevin Kittoe. “1000 Voices is an avenue that I'm using right now.”Tevin's goal is to feature 1,000 Black British changemakers on the show. Reminding me that the people he wants to highlight are not homogenous, he said:I'm trying to make it as diverse as possible. So to get people from all sorts of different backgrounds, people in all different industries, from all different growing up in different asset areas, their from class or social standing—very diverse people to come and to tell their stories of change. He wants to give them a place to “come and talk about how they're driving change in their places of work, how they're driving change in their business, how they drive and change in their communities and so forth.”While the goal is to host 1,000 Black Britons, his vision is to “build a more equitable and better UK and a better world for us all.” He says, “I'm a strong, strong believer that until every group, every marginalized group is good, nobody really is good.”Tevin highlights some of the racial disparities in Brittain—which may sound familiar to Americans. Maternal mortality, he notes, is four or five times worse for Black women in the UK. Black children are more likely to be excluded from school; police tactics feature racial disparities, and criminal sentencing for Black Britons is disproportionate for similar crimes.Tevin is proud of the guests he's featured, including Jamelia, a famous singer in the UK. He recapped the highlights of the interview:I usually try and encourage people to do is to come and just keep it real and to be as normal as they feel comfortable being. And in that interview, she was so, so open. I loved it because you get to see a different side of someone. You see her on TV singing and doing what she's doing, but you don't always necessarily get to see what she's like behind the cameras, what she's like in her own personal life. That was so good because she really, really opened up and we spoke about some challenges that she's been through in her personal life. We spoke about her music journey, some of the highlights, some of the low points. Definitely a very memorable conversation. He also featured Natalie Campbell, the founder and CEO of Belu Water, a social enterprise selling filtered, flavored and sparkling waters with a social mission built around three Sustainable Development Goals.Of Natalie, Tevin says, “She has this very, very sort of dogged sense of self-belief, this really, really strong sense of I can do whatever I put my mind to.”As we recorded this episode last month, Tevin had published 42 interviews. “One common denominator between all of them is that they're vulnerable to some degree. They open up, and they share pieces from their own story.”Tevin explains why he sees vulnerability as a superpower:Most people kind of be vulnerable to friends and family around them, let alone to the whole world put out on social media. But I've found that it's a superpower in some way, shape or form. It's so inspiring to hear someone really talk about what's going on in the deepest crevices of their heart, what's been going on in the deepest depths of their mind, the crazy dark thoughts that they've had, how they've overcome, if they've even overcome it, they're still battling against it. But through all of that, how they're driving change through their work and incredibly inspiring from a load of people, I've spoken to.As an effective podcast host, he leverages his superpower: empathy. How to Develop Empathy As a SuperpowerTevin reflected on an experience where he engaged his empathy on a genuinely personal level:I remember one time that I was with, well, my wife and I were—back there, my girlfriend—and we were out in Oxford Street. So south central London, if you listen and you know London very well. There was a woman who came up to me and asked me—what she asked me for, I can't remember. She asked me for something. I can't remember. But we struck up a little conversation. She didn't look very well. I try not to judge a book by its cover. I don't really like doing that. But you could tell she was something was off with her. She was troubled in some way, shape or form, but we struck up a conversation. Then I just came to realize that she had moved over to the UK not long ago, had been lied to. She thought she was coming to work instead she was just being lied to. She's homeless, and she's got children, which I thought was nuts. So, I remember we took her to a shop, we got some food bought, gave her a little money so she can buy some clothes for her children, and then just try to give her some numbers she could call this number. She had a phone. “Call this number, call them. They'll be able to help you.”Tevin helped a woman countless people had ignored that day. He engaged his empathy. He says, “it can be learned.”“The first step is just education and learning more about other groups of people outside of your own circle,” Tevin says. “I think it's a dangerous thing to only hang around and talk to people who look like you, who come from the same background as you, and just have the exact same shared experiences as you.”“Be curious. Find out more about everything in this big, vast world that we live in,” he says.By following Tevin's example and advice, you can make empathy a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world. This set starts off nice and funky with tracks from Jamelia, Beyonce`, Martin Ikin, Matt Goss and Fedde Le Grand kicking the set off. As the set transitions into a bigger room sound, Danny Morris, Russ Rich and Toy Armada bring the energy and lift the set to the next level. Dirty Disco feature two outstanding remixes here and Elof de Neve and Thiago Antony add to the energy. This month's edition of UP! is dedicated to my friends Gary and Mark who were recently married and threw a wedding of epic proportions (which I am still recovering from). This episode features Associate Professor of Law at UConn, Jamelia Morgan. Through her education at Stanford University and Yale Law School, Professor Morgan gained expertise in criminal law, critical race theory, equality law, disability law and policy, prison law and policy, and policing. Professor Morgan talks about how she supported creating the 'U.S. Anti-Black Racism Course' at UConn alongside other faculty because of student demand for the course. Although she began her career as a paralegal, teaching was important for her to explore because she believes education is the key to changing structural racism which still exists today.  Our host Tomaso echoes how important it is to have conversations like theirs in university settings.

This episode we chat with Britian's very own singer-songwriter Jamelia. Jamelia is not only an incredible advocate for people speaking up but somebody who has sold millions of albums and scored number one's all over the world. She has won multiple awards including 4 Mobo's a Q award and an Ivor Novello. She's appeared on programmes on every major UK TV channel and hit the screens on countless movies both in front and her music as soundtracks and tv screens. Such a powerful episode as we delve into getting to know the person behind the public persona that people think they know and go behind the scenes to learn what it is like to feel like you are living almost a dual life at the same time and what comes with that. We learn about Jamelia's upbringing to then being thrust into the limelight after signing her first record deal at 15 and what comes with navigating through an industry when all eyes are on you and we hear about a shift into the TV industry later on through her career where she began to see a negative side of an experience in the entertainment industry to where she first experienced struggles with her own mental health after having the realisation that she seemed to be loved when entertaining through music but not when on one of Britains biggest daytime talk shows on a panel with an opinion. Such a powerful, raw and open conversation as we continue to find out how Jamelia worked through that period of time and healed those emotional struggles and where she is now.  To find out more about Jamelia, you can find her through her social platforms at: @officialjamelia or you can simply head to her official website at: jamelia.com To find out more about the Imperfectly Perfect Campaign and our global Efforts, simply head to all of our socials or our offical website at imperfectlyperfectcampaign.org   Voice-Over: Mike Christenson (thevoicemonkey.com)

In the penultimate episode of 2018, we get straight to the heart of an interesting week. We ran an advert with a formula milk brand and all hell broke loose! We also discuss why black women especially have to be damn near perfect in order to move forward, using Jamelia's most recent blacklisting due to her step brother's conviction as an example. We also question whether influencers have a duty to be more honest in regards to their lifestyle. And finally we discuss the harsh truth in publishing which means people with massive followings but no writing talent are getting book deals whilst those who pour everything into their work are being overlooked because their social followings are deemed as too small.

Many black, UK-based, female R&B performers, especially those from the early 2000s, have found it hard to establish a career at home. Acts such as Estelle, Jamelia, Sade, Ms Dynamite, Cleopatra and Misteeq have either left the music industry completely, diversified into presenting and acting or have re-established a base in the US in an attempt to continue their careers. Meanwhile American performers such as Beyonce, Rihanna and Alicia Keys who started their careers at a similar time, continue to dominate the music world. British acts, despite early chart recognition, awards and fan devotion, struggled to make an impact in the same way. And in the modern era, performers such as Laura Mvula, despite enormous talent and massive critical acclaim, have encountered problems dealing with the music industry. Why do the women involved in British R&B fail to find lasting success at home? Why can't British artists maintain the same trajectory as their American counterparts? Why do they feel it necessary to relocate abroad or work in other parts of the entertainment industry? And will the R&B artists of the future face the same problems?
