Thomas Pitfield, born in Bolton in 1903 and whose life stretched to the very end of the 20th century – he died in 1999 – is one of those polymaths who embraced numerous different outlets: he was a composer, a poet, an illustrator, a calligrapher, a cabinet maker and a teacher. He is probably better known for the people he knew and taught – including John McCabe, John Ogdon and Ronald Stevenson – than in his own right. This new collection of songs is a good start to get to know a fine musical voice. James Jolly spoke, separately, to James Gilchrist and Nathan Williamson about this appealing composer. This Gramophone Podcast is produced in association with Wigmore Hall.
For the podcast this week, Sarah Meyrick travelled to York to talk to the Canon Precenter of York Minster, the Revd Dr Victoria Johnson, and the director of the Royal School of Church Music (RSCM), Hugh Morris, about the importance of church music. The Church Times and the RSCM have together launched a new event, the Festival of Faith and Music, which takes place in York Minster from 26 to 28 April (News, 8 December). Full programme and ticketing information can be found at https://faithandmusic.hymnsam.co.uk. Through a programme of music and worship, talks and workshops, the festival is designed for clergy and church musicians, and seeks to celebrate church music in all its glory and to send delegates home encouraged, inspired, and equipped with new ideas for using music in worship. Canon Johnson will be speaking at the event about her book, On Voice: Speech, song, silence: human and divine, which will be published in March by Darton, Longman & Todd (Features, 5 January). On the podcast, she talks about some of the themes in the book, including why she is inspired by the singing of football crowds and how silence also figures in her thinking about sung worship. The keynote speaker at the Festival of Faith and Preaching will be the Archbishop of York, in a session called “Tuning forks and orchestras: Music and the mission of God”. Other speakers include Roxana Panufnik, composer of one of the works sung at the Coronation; and Andy Thomas, the author of Resounding Body: Building Christlike church communities through music. Two internationally renowned singers, James Gilchrist and Andrea Haines, both of whom started singing in parish church choirs, will talk about how it all began, and will perform some reflective music in the quire of York Minster. If you've been a listener of this podcast for a while, you'll know I'm a huge advocate for optimizing your health, for being your own health care advocate. I've been working on optimizing my health and fitness for over a decade. I dramatically improved my strength and fitness, I've cleaned up my diet and improved my gut health, I've built healthy sleep routines and dramatically improved my sleep quality, I've worked on managing my stress levels though prayer, meditation, and journaling, I've worked diligently on detoxing my environment – including my skincare and household cleaning products. And the results of all this work have been nothing short of miraculous. I've gone from being as sick and unhealthy as I've ever been in my life to being in the beast shape of my life at age 58. But here's one area of my health that I've ignored – and that's my hearing health. I've had mild to moderate hearing loss most of my adult life. But in spite of my family's insistence, I've never addressed this important aspect of my health. There's a running joke in my family every birthday and Christmas that this is the year I'm getting a hearing aid. But why have I ignored this one area of my health? I mean, what's the big deal anyway? If you or a loved one has a hard time hearing – turn up the volume and tune into this episode! My guest today is James Gilchrist. James is the CEO of Hear USA, one of America's largest hearing care retailers. Join us today as James discusses the widespread – but often overlooked – problem of hearing loss, and why only 1 in 5 people with hearing loss actually take steps to correct this issue. Podcast My Guest on the show was James Gilchrist and his wife Julie Sherwood. Artists from New York. James Gilchrist and Julie Sherwood are AWEN (a Welsh term for “inspiration and wisdom from the spiritual realm”) - a folk/rock acoustic duo influenced by an eclectic mix of creative artists and a love of musical theater. They have been performing together for 16 years as of this writing and together have over 60 years of musical and theatrical experiences to draw upon. Almost 20 years ago, James founded Share The Light Productions and began gathering together NYC-based artists interested in connecting in positive ways to the wider world. Julie and he met and began a shared musical journey as part of the folk/rock/world band Blue Knight performing James’ original Celtic-influenced music, but eventually emerged as AWEN and began traveling the globe sharing their unique blend of uplifting music and vocal harmonies wherever it was needed most. Together James and Julie believe music shared is a powerful force which can help heal the body and raise the spirit. Julie is a Board Certified Music Therapist and founder of Inner Harmony Center for Hope & Healing. During the stress and trauma of the Covid-19 crisis, Julie is broadening her reach with online workshops and music therapy groups to help people around the world release anxiety and build resilience. Programs include relaxation groups, healing drum circles, and the “Two-Minute Turnaround” series, which teaches simple self-help techniques for quickly releasing stress and restoring inner harmony. These groups are open to the public, and schedules can be found using the contact information below. As AWEN continues to seek opportunities to perform music online to better reach those in need they offer many thanks to Fraser Ramsey and his podcast for connecting with them and helping them connect with you, his listeners! May we all safely find our way to a world made better through music, connections, and acts of love, light, and kindness. This podcast features an interview with tenor James Gilchrist, in which we discuss a variety of topics relating to being a singer: - psychology of performance, particularly, in somewhere like the Wigmore Hall where he was singing that evening. - the way audiences might perceive song recitals, and what performers can do to engage them regarding such perceptions. - the balance between what artists do on stage to communicate with their audience, e.g., how much is moving around or maintaining eye contact? - interpretation of narrative in lieder repertoire. - the challenges and privileges of being a medical doctor (which James initially started as), and making the transition to becoming a full-time professional performer. - comparing the experience of music college versus university. Many thanks to James for coming especially to London in the morning to record, as well as Tamsin Raitt and the staff at Wigmore Hall for arrangements for the interview! Podcast published on 13th February 2020; recorded on 8th February 2020 in the Gerald Moore Room, Wigmore Hall, London. James Gilchrist began his working life as a doctor, turning to a full-time career in music in 1996. His musical interest was fired at a young age, singing first as a chorister in the choir of New College, Oxford, and later as a choral scholar at King’s College, Cambridge. James’ extensive concert repertoire has seen him perform in major concert halls throughout the world. Bach’s Christmas Oratorio and the St John and Matthew Passions feature prominently in his schedule, and he is celebrated as perhaps the finest Evangelist of his generation. Recent engagements include Elijah in Goteborgs Symfoniker and Masaaki Suzuki, Handel’s Messiah with the Handel & Haydn Society in Boston, with Bernard Labadie, and Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis with Singapore Symphony Orchestra. In the 2019-20 season appearances include the role of Rev. Horace Adams Peter Grimes with Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Edward Gardner in London and Norway, St Matthew Passion with City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra conducted by Richard Egarr, and a tour of Europe with Bach Collegium Japan and Masaaki Suzuki. If you work in any of the highly regulated and controlled industries as a trainer or instructional designer, you may have found it to be lacking in creativity and innovation. You likely spend the majority of your time developing and supporting compliance training that must first be approved by a committee of members from all departments. And we all know how that turns out. Learners receive boring slides filled with jargon approved by the legal team. The good news is that it doesn’t need to be that way. As an instructional designer working in the finance industry for many years, James Gilchrist has taken on the task of navigating difficult environments, pushing up against corporate boundaries, and succeeding at being innovative. It’s not often that we find a creative soul like James working in this type of environment and willing to share his tips and tricks with the IDIODC community.James is an Associate Director at the DTCC (Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation) in its DTCC Learning department. Hired as an Instructional Designer on contract in 2008, he made the transition to FTE in 2010 and has spent the last ten years developing client learning initiatives for many of DTCC’s core financial service offerings. He considers the work of building learning solutions and the experience of managing client relationships as equally important when it comes to creating innovative corporate training that makes an impact.Become virtual friends with the IDIODC gang on twitter. We went down to SWG3 in Glasgow to visit Warrior Studios and chat with James Gilchrist. James started Warrior studios with Beth Wilson after meeting at Edinburgh College of Art and holding themselves to a higher standard than that of their tutors. They then went on to create Graphic Design Festival Scotland as a response to problems they saw within the industry. They’re now moving into the 5th year of the festival that has grown in size and reputation over the years. We talk about the ups and downs the festival has brought as well as the design industry in Scotland as a whole.
