Perched over the Hudson River near the city of Hudson sits Olana State Historic Site, once the wondrous home of painter Frederic Church. This Gilded Age mansion is unlike any in the valley, mystical and imposing, evoking Persian and Moorish architectural styles and reflecting the art and ambitions of its former owner. Church was more than a Hudson River School painter; he was an adventurer and dreamer, bringing the vistas of the world to America within his massive landscape creations. In 1859, when his Heart of the Andes made its New York debut, thousands lined up to soak in its impossible beauty. Victoria Johnson, author of the new biography Glorious Country: How the Artist Frederic Church Brought the World to America and America to the World, has walked in his footsteps — from the Ecuadorian volcano Cotopaxi to the heights of ancient Petra. She joins Greg and Tom on the podcast this week to discuss Church's unusual life — both as a New Yorker and as a daring traveler. After this show, you may never look at a landscape painting the same way again. This show was edited and produced by Kieran Gannon Visit the website to take a look at some of Church's paintings, as well as a list of other Bowery Boys podcasts related to this show. This is a "must-watch" episode! In this episode, Victoria sits down with Dr. David Clarke, MD, President of the Association for Treatment of Neuroplastic Symptoms, to explore a topic that is often misunderstood and frequently missed in traditional healthcare: neuroplastic symptoms. These are very real physical symptoms, such as chronic pain, fatigue, migraines, dizziness, and other conditions that are not caused by structural disease, but by the brain's response to stress and unresolved emotional experiences. Dr. Clarke explains that these symptoms affect approximately one in three adults, yet many people go years without a proper diagnosis or effective treatment.Together, they unpack how past experiences, especially childhood adversity, along with personality patterns like perfectionism and people-pleasing, can contribute to the development of these symptoms. The conversation highlights how suppressed or unprocessed emotions can manifest physically, often leaving individuals feeling confused, dismissed, or stuck in cycles of ongoing health challenges.Dr. Clarke shares compelling case examples of individuals who experienced significant and lasting relief once the emotional drivers behind their symptoms were identified and addressed. He also introduces practical approaches to healing, including increasing awareness of stressors, processing emotions, and simple techniques such as therapeutic writing to safely express what has been held in.This episode offers both validation and direction for anyone who has struggled with symptoms that do not seem to have a clear medical explanation. It provides a grounded and hopeful perspective on the mind-body connection and reinforces that these symptoms are not imagined and, importantly, are treatable.Key Takeaways:Neuroplastic symptoms are common and often misunderstood Physical symptoms can be driven by stress and emotional patterns Suppressed emotions do not disappear; they show up in the body Awareness and emotional processing are central to healing Recovery is possible, even after years of symptoms Resources Mentioned:Symptomatic.me (self-assessment and educational resources). Guest: Terisa Kinsey Novick - Part 1Contact: tknovick@gmail.comIn this heartfelt and deeply reflective episode, Victoria sits down with Terisa Kinsey Novick, a master training consultant with more than 20 years of experience in adult learning and the implementation of training systems for major organisations.Terisa shares the philosophy that guides her life: “Let go and let God.” What may sound simple reveals itself as a powerful spiritual and emotional practice. She explains that true inner peace does not come from controlling circumstances but from turning inward, expanding perspective, and trusting something greater than ourselves. The conversation explores Terisa's personal journey through significant loss, including the death of her first love, her mother, and her brother, and most recently her husband. Rather than becoming defined by grief, she describes how these experiences reshaped her understanding of death. She now sees it as a transition rather than an ending.Victoria reflects on the noticeable peace in Terisa's words and asks how she navigates moments when grief feels overwhelming. Terisa shares that she learned to let emotions move through her instead of resisting them, and she describes loss as an “address change,” a shift in location rather than a disappearance. They also discuss Terisa's experience attending the Heal Your Life training in Banff and how that work supported her transformation and resilience during challenging seasons. This episode is a gentle yet powerful conversation about surrender, grief, faith, spiritual connection, and the strength that comes from inner alignment. It offers comfort and perspective for anyone navigating loss or seeking deeper peace. Stay tuned for part two! Victoria Johnson speaks with attorney-turned-betrayal-recovery expert Lora Cheadle about healing after profound betrayal and reclaiming identity, joy, and agency. Lora shares how discovering her husband's long-term infidelity dismantled her sense of self, how she rebuilt using her 5-step FLAUNT framework, and why accepting reality, feeling feelings, and trusting your own truth are the bedrock of recovery. Together they explore reframing anniversaries of loss, navigating setbacks without spiritual bypassing, and “closing scenes” in life like a screenwriter so you can move into the next act with intention.Betrayal can come from people, life events, our bodies, and self-abandonment through people-pleasing and perfectionism.Healing requires both regulation and meaning-making. Laughter and play help regulate the nervous system so the prefrontal cortex can engage.Spiritual bypassing slows recovery. Give yourself permission to feel fully, then use tools to move through.Progress is not linear. Navigation means pivoting, resting, and continuing with small course corrections.Trust your own filter. Seek advice, then decide from inner knowing and communicate clearly: “I valued your input, and I have decided to do X.”Find Your Fetish: Return to pure joy and play for its own sake.Laugh Out Loud: Use laughter to calm and re-regulate the nervous system.AU Accept Unconditionally: The golden centre. Accept yourself, others, and what has happened, without trying to change the past.Navigate the Negative: Expect storms and keep adjusting your course.Trust in Your Truth: Use your intellect and intuition as the final filter.Anniversary reframe: Mark difficult dates as milestones of reclamation and growth.Feel first, then frame: Allow the tears, nausea, and grief. Afterward, choose a supportive narrative.Five endings exercise: Journal five distinct meanings or endings for a hard event. Pick one and identify what lessons or “foreshadowing” you will carry into the next scene.Boundary script for advice-givers: “Thank you.
