My guest today is Jared Janes, a coach, podcaster, community builder, and meditator. From an early age, Jared has had a deep interest in human development, and has been willing to endure quite a lot to learn about and experience that development for himself. Jared spent six years exploring a handful of popular meditation methods and spiritual traditions, but still sensed that something was missing. With the guidance of his friend & teacher Charlie Awbery, he moved from a renunciative practice to the life-affirming path of a yogi. And in 2020, the two of them co-founded a contemporary community of practice called Evolving Ground. I found Jared to be open, warm, and full of helpful knowledge based on personal experience. I truly enjoyed our conversation and I hope you do as well. In our conversation we discussed facing mortality, Jared's personal experience facing adversity from a young age and how it shaped his behavior growing up, religion, adversity, privilege, pain, morality, good and evil, Buddhism, stoicism, differences between East and West, non-duality, humility, vulnerability, finding truth, distance from oneself, equanimity, individual stories, detachment, mythology, the bible, the garden of Eden, the two trees, symbolism, reincarnation, meditation, the endless pursuit of ‘something' and the evolution of our own stories.  Episode Details: Guest Name: Jared Janes Website: https://www.jaredjanes.com/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/JaredJanes LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jaredjanes/ Gong Sound: 68261__juskiddink__bell4.wav Where to find The EXPLORER POET Podcast: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/explorerpoet/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/ExplorerPoetPod  Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCIQxs0F0mGoEJYNNJx4ph5g  Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Explorer-Poet-105087492172066  Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/4Z9WKzUIWbq5qOJE1zmRJQ  Apple: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-explorer-poet-podcast/id1621189025  Google: https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0cHM6Ly9hbmNob3IuZm0vcy85MmM5ZTY5NC9wb2RjYXN0L3Jzcw?sa=X&ved=0CAMQ4aUDahcKEwjA6v_KhPn3AhUAAAAAHQAAAAAQLA

Jared Janes I have a long list of eclectic interests & experiences*, but the unifying theme seems to be human development. A theme that eventually led me to meditation in 2013. I spent the following six years exploring a handful of popular meditation methods & spiritual traditions but sensed that something was missing. Then, with the guidance of my friend & teacher Charlie Awbery, I moved from renunciative practice to the life-affirming path of a yogi. Jason Snyder is an interesting guy to follow but hard man to describe. He is a self described doomer optimist, homesteader, memetic mediator and co-host of the Both/And Podcast along with Jared Janes. He also holds a PhD from Michigan State in Economics. In this episode we journey from the interior of the mind outward to our planetary limits and make lots of little stops along the way. We discuss embodied cognition and Jason's bespoke meditation practice, manual labor, localism and bio-regionalism, problems that have to be addressed at a planetary scale and how cosmo-localism and metamodernism might tie it all together. It's a fire hose of fascinating topics with interesting clues about how they all might connect. Jason Snyder, PhD is an adjunct professor at Appalachian State University (ASU), serving in the Department of Sustainable Development. He is a man for all seasons, just as comfortable discussing mindfulness, self-inquiry, and the finer points of eastern philosophy as he is addressing "fractal localism" and "permaculture." This is who you want in a "Walking Dead" Scenario, in which sustainable agriculture AND philosophy are both required. Jason's expertise at proposing and fashioning sustainable agricultural ecosystems (with a view toward economic sustainability) serves as a welcome and timely topic, in the latter portion of this interview. The first hour of this podcast contrasts Jason's psychological and philosophical background with my own, with a deep yet conversational dive into applied philosophy and psychology. I speak with Jason regarding the "both/and" stance of Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) as this relates to his own personal journey as a "cartographer of ideas," who practices curious listening toward dissonant ideas. "Both/AND" is even the name of a podcast which he hosts with Jared Janes. Special attention is dedicated to the overlap between psychology (especially Robert Keegan's Theory of Adult Development) and spiritual experiences, with relevance to daily functioning. Our dialogue regarding the interactive relationship between neurobiology (limbic system, frontal lobe, etc.) and personality growth/pathlogy is especially notable. Jason's fondness for
