Chris Smaje and Jason Snyder make their triumphant return to DO to join Ashley to explore the concepts of 'strong gods' and 'weak gods' as articulated by NS Lyons, examining the historical context, implications of nationalism's resurgence, critiques of the strong gods argument, and the importance of localism and community in navigating societal changes. The discussion also dives into the need for a moral framework in a diverse society and the role of community in fostering resilience against global challenges. They discuss the need for a living tradition that is not ossified, the search for meaning in a secular world, and the role of religion in civic life. The conversation covers the complexities of community engagement, the duality of political figures, and the future of local politics and livelihoods. Throughout, they emphasize the importance of grounding spiritual practices in local contexts and the challenges of navigating tradition in a rapidly changing world.
In this episode, Ashley interviews husband and wife team Ben and Lucy about their eco-market in upstate New York, and Geoffrey from Longstory Farms about his planned local farm story in South Carolina. We discuss the importance of local commerce, challenges, and nuts and bolts approaches to competing in the market. Ben and Lucy Janssen both grew up in upstate NY and met at the local Community College. Lucy started her store Reuse Refuge in October 2020 with a friend while many small businesses were closing. The goal was to help provide the local community with non-plastic or biodegradable necessities of everyday life that help reduce domestic waste streams. It has since adapted and branched out its focus to maintain a foothold in the small city of Auburn's downtown. Going on its 5th year it has struggled to flourish financially as its vision doesn't prioritize consumerism but the more traditional scale economy. Ben works a job helping the developmentally disabled. The store hours are limited to weeknights and weekends when he's not working as they raise their 5-year-old. Ben grew interested in soil health and eventually peak oil. Ben met Jason Snyder in Joe Brewer's online regeneration class in 2020 and has kept in touch with the Doomer Optimism community since. Although Ben has grown more agnostic on peak oil or collapse perspectives he continues to read many books on the theme of industrial society and its effects on ecological and cultural shifts over time while supporting his wife's vision for her store. @reuserefuge on Instagram and TikTok @bennirubber on Instagram, Youtube, Substack, X, and Benjamin Janssen on goodreads.com Long Story Farms, LLC is a family-run pasture-based, sustainable farm just outside Newberry, SC. Guests: Dr. Jason Snyder and Dr. Jonathan Teague Excerpts from the conversation: Lie #4: Transgenderism is normal. Scripture does not support transgender ideology/belief/actions as normal, healthy, or to be supported or endorsed. In today's culture, “love” has been redefined as acceptance and endorsement as I am and you are not allowed to say anything in opposition to my beliefs. And since God is “love,” when culture redefines love, it redefines the very nature of God to fit its own desires. This redefined god is not the God of the Bible. How to address this concept - go back and learn about the God of the Bible. Read Rosaria's article entitled, “Why I no longer use Transgender Pronouns - and Why You shouldn't either.” WPATH: The truth about “gender affirming healthcare” Lie #5: Modesty is an outdated burden that serves male dominance and holds women back. Guys, the issue of modesty isn't just a woman's issue - as men, dads, we need to address this issue in our homes…and lead by example. We don't need to buy into the “modest is hottest” false narrative, we need to understand that modesty is the desire to be holy and honor God with our bodies. Men, if the pornographic culture is shaping the way that you view women, you will not understand the importance and value of modesty. The issue of modesty is less about “protecting men” and more about presenting women as daughters of the living God who are more than mere physical beings - ladies, you are body, soul, and spirit - don't allow the culture to elevate your physical attributes over the other important aspects of who you are! Guests: Dr. Jason Snyder and Dr. Jonathan Teague Excerpts from the conversation: Lie #2 - Being a spiritual person is kinder than being a Christian. The Gospel doesn't just make us nicer versions of ourselves. The Gospel gives us a new nature and the power to live for the glory of God. What is your working definition of “good”? If your definition of good is absent of absolute truth, then it is subjective and lacking. For a Christian, “good” is defined by the nature of God and is not held captive by “the spirit of the age” or what is defined as good or popular during this particular day. Make sure that you have an eternal, unchangeable standard for the foundation of your worldview and definitions. Lie #3 - Feminism is good for the world and for the church. Most individuals that we know who are supportive of “feminism” as a worldview have specific, individual negative experiences in their own lives from a man who abused his position of power and authority. Feminism attacks God's design for gender and sexuality, the family, and culture at large. Feminism is incompatible with Biblical personhood because it contradicts the creation ordinance. Guests: Dr. Jason Snyder and Dr. Jonathan Teague Excerpts from the book: Lie #1: Homosexuality is Normal I lamented male-female relationships that called for a woman's submission, even if voluntary. My feminist worldview/religion declared any male-female sexual relationship that rejected sameness (the idea that men and women are interchangeable) and called for a wife's submission to her husband foundational to rape culture. The order of creation made the point: the sexes are equal in essence and different in social roles. It was utterly and completely shocking to realize that my lesbianism was truly a sin. Godly womanhood does not erase a woman's strength or identity; rather, it applies God's grace to me. Biblical sexuality is natural, God-blessed, and procreative. In contrast, homosexuality is unnatural, sinful, and barren. What if it feels right? That sin nature is why homosexuality can feel normal and natural to some people. The Bible is truer than our feelings. WORDS matter. And Jesus is still the Word made flesh. T4M guys - just a reminder that Training4Manhood is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) ministry and you can make donations either via Zelle (info@training4manhood.com) or by visiting the Training4Manhood website. Guests: Dr. Jason Snyder and Dr. Jonathan Teague Some incredible excerpts/statements from Five Lies: This book is for Christian, especially Christian WOMEN. But still a valuable read for guys - which is why we are tackling this book on T4M But some of us believe, as I do, that God's design for women determines our roles and our priorities. The Christian family matters, and its neglect is deadly. God's design for women is biologically to bear children - and the greatest calling and responsibility for Christians (men and women) is to train children and raise them in the fear and admonition of the Lord… This will require a sacrifice from both men and women in terms of their priorities and opportunities… This book [the Bible] offers one simple answer: the world is in chaos, and the church is divided because we have failed to obey God and value his plan for how men and women should live. The creation of man and woman, also known as the “creation ordinance,” is CENTRAL, not peripheral, to the GOSPEL. God is holy, and therefore ignorance, iniquity, and ungodliness reflect our sin nature in Adam. Three “exchanges” of truth for lies in Romans 1:21-28 First there is the exchange of the Creator for the creature, or the exchange of God worship for idol worship Second is the exchange of truth for lies Third comes the exchange of natural sexuality (heterosexuality) or dishonorable passions (homosexuality) The Five Lies: Lie #1: Homosexuality is normal Lie #1 claims that the word of God doesn't apply to homosexual orientation because homosexual orientation represents a person's core truth But if you exchange the Creator for the creature, you impose God's attributes on man. Lie #2: Being a spiritual person is kinder than being a biblical Christian. Lie #3: Feminism is good for the world and the church. In 2023, we cannot even define what a woman is or defend her right to exist Lie #4: Transgenderism is normal. Lie #5: Modesty is an outdated burden that serves male dominance and holds women back. My reason for changing my mind can be stated in two words: Obergefell (as in Obergefell v. Hodges, 2015) and Bostock (as in Bostock v. Clayton County, 2020) Obergefell legalized same-sex marriage Bostock made sexual orientation a protected class Thomas Watson in The Doctrine of Repentance Recognition of sin Sorrow for sin Confession of sin Shame for sin Hatred for sin Turning from sin Thomas Watson comments: “Loving of sin is worse than committing it. A goodman may run into a sinful action unawares, but to love sin is desperate…” After Obergefell and Bostock, LGBTQ+ describes who someone is rather than how someone feels. A discussion of Chris' forthcoming book Saying No to a Farm-Free Future “Everyone in the food business needs to read this book. . . . [A] lively and superbly written polemic.”—Joel Salatin, co-founder of Polyface Farm A defense of agroecological, small-scale farming and a robust critique of an industrialized future. One of the few voices to challenge The Guardian‘s George Monbiot on the future of food and farming (and the restoration of nature) is academic, farmer and author of A Small Farm Future Chris Smaje. In Saying NO to a Farm-Free Future, Smaje presents his defense of small-scale farming and a robust critique of Monbiot's vision for an urban and industrialized future.Responding to Monbiot's portrayal of an urban, high-energy, industrially manufactured food future as the answer to our current crises, and its unchallenged acceptance within the environmental discourse, Smaje was compelled to challenge Monbiot's evidence and conclusions. At the same time, Smaje presents his powerful counterargument – a low-carbon agrarian localism that puts power in the hands of local communities, not high-tech corporates. In the ongoing fight for our food future, this book will help you to understand the difference between a congenial, ecological living and a dystopian, factory-centered existence. A must-read! “Chris Smaje has laid down an indictment – as unremitting as it is undeniable – that cuts through the jargon-filled, techno-worshipping agricultural futurists who promise silver-bullet fixes for having your cake and eating it too. This brilliant and compelling book is at once hopeful and persuasive about the future of food.”—Dan Barber, chef at Blue Hill and author of The Third Plate Saying NO to a Farm-Free Future: The Case For an Ecological Food System and Against Manufactured Foods https://www.chelseagreen.com/product/saying-no-to-a-farm-free-future/

Is homesteading (and localism) a form of retreat from society? It can lead down a lonely path if you do not also develop community.Jason Snyder (@cognazor on Twitter) of Doomer Optimism Podcast joins me to talk about his recent tweet:"I don't like the narrative of modern day homesteading (and localism more generally) being a form of retreat or disengagement from larger societal concerns. I see it more as a prefiguration of a healthier society that can emerge from its broad-scale and networked diffusion."We discuss positive steps to move forward, not "retreat":Get back in touch with your where you food comes from - grow your own food. You can be a localist, even in the city.Plant as many fruit and nut trees as possible. Make passive food sources a common part of your city and homestead landscape. An exploration of evolutionary dynamics and potential futures Matthew Pirkowski experiments at the intersection of software, behavioral / evolutionary psychology, and complex adaptive systems. These interests first took root while observing and modeling the collective behavioral psychology of capuchin monkeys at Yale's Comparative Cognition Laboratory, with the goal of understanding why–and to what extent–our conceptions of “rational action” fail to describe what we observe beyond the domain of analytic abstraction. Such experiences catalyzed an interest in designing and building the interfaces through which human perception and purpose contacts the computational processes that have thoroughly saturated our lives and minds. Matthew is presently building a platform for modeling purpose-aligned human networks as naturally emergent organisms. He also consults on system architecture, advises nascent companies and communities, and writes about topics related to the evolution of human socioeconomic, technological, and representational systems–in particular the emergence and impact of cryptoeconomic protocols, as outlined in his Crypto Beyond Capitalism essay series. He spends most of his free time maintaining, regenerating, and growing food on a bit of land in the Cascade Range. He can be found as @MattPirkowski on twitter

Ashley and Jason speak with Jared on all things metamodern religion and spirituality. Jared Janes I have a long list of eclectic interests & experiences*, but the unifying theme seems to be human development. A theme that eventually led me to meditation in 2013. I spent the following six years exploring a handful of popular meditation methods & spiritual traditions but sensed that something was missing. Then, with the guidance of my friend & teacher Charlie Awbery, I moved from renunciative practice to the life-affirming path of a yogi. In 2020, the two of us co-founded a contemporary community of practice called Evolving Ground. This episode of Doomer Optimism has Jason Snyder (@cognazor) having a conversation with Richard Flynn (@Richard_Flyer) about building a sustainable global commonwealth of bioregional economies. About Richard Flynn Richard has been building local community and bioregional ecosystems for the last 40 years. He has integrated his lifelong experiences of spiritual formation with his love of nature; trained as a marine and evolutionary biologist, studying pilot whale and dolphin communication; and then applied what he learned to community development. Experiences of what he calls “Nature's Web” led him to travel to Mexico in the 1980's to apprentice with an Aztec Indian/Christian medicine woman, a curandara, where he experienced indigenous wisdom and followed with training in Tibetan Buddhist meditation. He was a leader of non-profit organizations, having formed a neighborhood network in a low income, multi-ethnic area of San Diego, California. This was followed by leading the San Diego Food Bank, and to Reno to lead a statewide microfinance organization. It was then that he shifted focus to become an entrepreneur in the medical field of hyperbaric oxygen therapy, where he continues supporting therapy centers in the western US. Richard Flyer is back in the US after 6 months in Sri Lanka, where he was working with Sarvodaya, the world's largest national bioregional network of communities. It was Mahatma Gandhi and his vision of a commonwealth of village republics, passed to the Sarvodaya movement in Sri Lanka that inspired him to translate universal principles into an urban western community context. Currently, he is working on various regenerative community projects, what he calls “Symbiotic Networks” --- a syntropic food forest project in North Kohala, Big Island, Hawaii and a local food system network in Oahu, Hawaii. He divides his time between Southern Germany, and Hawaii. Richard is launching the Symbiotic Culture Lab in Fall 2022 to promote Symbiotic Culture and Community to support bioregions around the world that want to learn to activate their own Symbiotic Networks. His book on the birth of the Symbiotic Age will be coming out Fall 2022. Best to find him on Twitter or LinkedIn, as his website, Symbiotic Culture Lab is being launched soon. I know we say this all the time around Doomer Optimism, but this time we really have a special episode. Brought live from Colombia, host Steven Morris (@lifesmyth) interviews Joe Brewer (@cognitivepolicy) about the Earth Regenerators community and the work they're doing in Colombia. Jason Snyder (@cognazor) also joins them. Gear up for an optimism-heavy episode. About Joe Brewer Joe Brewer has separate bachelors degrees in physics, mathematics, and interdisciplinary studies and a masters in atmospheric sciences. He is a complexity researcher, innovation strategist, experience designer, and serial social entrepreneur who brings a wealth of expertise to the adoption of sustainable solutions at the cultural scale. His experiences as a social entrepreneur and cross-disciplinary scholar weave together a combination of skills dedicated to open collaboration, interactive design, and empowered civic action for catalyzing change toward greater resilience in our turbulent world. More recently, he has moved to Colombia and is engaged in regenerating an area of dry desert with the aim of returning it to flourishing biodiversity. He has written The Design Pathway for Regenerating Earth and established Earth Regenerators, a community, a study group and a place to share ideas that will bring us closer to a prosocial world, focussed on bioregions where the human and More-Than-Human worlds integrate, where we organise with direct local democracy, create a steady state economy, based on shared values and not on growth, and where we predicate our actions on trusting the good intentions of others. About Steven Morris Steven Morris started his journey into then unnamed realm of Doomer Optimism in 2011 when, during the time of a divorce, he stumbled upon 3 of the many early doomer optimist voices: Chris Martenson's Crash Course, John Michael Greer's blog The Archdruid Report, and KMO's C-Realm podcast. These 3 identified the many issues of decline in the world that he could sense but didn't have words for. At the same time they all provided positive possibilities for the future. Steven considers himself an amateur Renaissance Man and Polymath of sorts with a wide variety of interests including: appropriate use of technology, regenerative systems, explorations in consciousness, alternative (sometimes called complementary) currency systems, computer technology, and complex systems. He has worked on multiple award winning independent films, managed warehouse logistics for a small business, run a college radio station and lead ecstatic dance workshops. He is a trained Host for Nora Bateson's People Need People gatherings. He currently generates income from running the audio visual technology behind corporate events and is working with the Commons Engine as the video editor for their upcoming Currency Design for Change Agents master class to be launched this spring. Steven is committed to supporting people find their way through the rapidly changing chaos, especially those who don't see themselves as homesteaders. This episode of Doomer Optimism sees Jason Snyder (@cognazor) hanging out with two native children of Appalachian, returning guest/host Dr. Josh Kearns (@HillbillyNarnia) and SaraDay Evans (@esaraday). What naturally starts as an interesting dissection of the tragi-magic quality to Appalachian living turns inevitably to SaraDay's amazing work with Accelerating Appalachia, a nature-based business accelerator that connects innovative businesses, investors and mentors who aligned with people, place and prosperity. Oh, and SaraDay is Wendell Berry's niece-in-law! About SaraDay Evans Sara Day Evans is the Founding Director for Accelerating Appalachia and Co-Founder of Prosperity Collective. She's a sixth generation Kentuckian, and has worked with communities and small businesses across the southeast for over 20 years. She's served over 300 communities and small businesses in economic development, entrepreneurship and environmental protection and leveraged over $250M in funding in service to the southeast and Appalachian region. She was awarded a presidential commendation from Bill Clinton for her work in the health and livelihood of women living in Appalachian Kentucky through her clean water efforts. With degrees in Geology/Hydrogeology and a background in water law, she was instrumental in developing Kentucky's groundwater protection programs and later developed Kentucky's first ongoing solid waste management fund, resulting in an 85% reduction in illegal dumping and a 25% increase in recycling. She served western North Carolina's hardest hit counties by developing sustainable economy plans that fit with the people and place of the region and created North Carolina's Green Economy Resources Directory. She's particularly proud of the program she developed and implemented to install clean energy systems on farms in western NC's high-unemployment counties while also training high school and community college students in clean energy installation. In 2011, Sara Day co-founded the social enterprise Prosperity Collective and inspired by the textile, farming, forest products skills of Appalachians, the expanding world of social entrepreneurs and investing for good, she launched Accelerating Appalachia in 2012 to serve nature-based businesses in Appalachia and beyond. About Dr. Josh Kearns Josh is a born-n-bred Appalachian and a native of West-By-God-Virginia and damn proud of it. Don't waste another minute here. Go read the full show notes on Patreon!Be forewarned: This latest episode is some extremely heady stuff. But thankfully, it's also full of heart and soul...Back in February, Jonathan Rowson posted two clips (here and here) from his latest in-progress writing tlimito Twitter, where it succeeded in baiting a bunch of the folks with whom I regularly interact as members of the so-called "Liminal Web" into reflecting on the value of partitioning a global boil of loosely-associated "sensemakers," "meta-theorists," and "systems poets" into well-meaning but ultimately dubious cultural taxonomies.I had plenty to say about this (here, here, and here) from my awkwardly consistent stance of being both enthusiastic and skeptical about apparently everything. But so did numerous other brilliant and inspiring people, including Bonnitta Roy, Stephanie Lepp, Ashley Colby, and Jason Snyder – all of whom I've wanted on the show for a while (with the exception of Stephanie, with whom I had a great chat back on episode 154). So I took it upon myself to press for an on-the-record group discussion about the virtue and folly of putting labels on sociocultural processes and networks that are defined by their liminality: Is this ultimately a good thing, or does it just kill the magic in a foolish servility to economic pressures and the desire to be recognized as A Movement? When we finally met at the end of March for our call, the conversation turned to issues with more urgency and gravitas — namely: Is it even helpful to spend all of our time talking about crises and metacrises when there is so much work to be done? What transpired was easily one of the more profound and inspired conversations I've ever had the good fortune to host on this show, although it was also more beset with insane and infuriating technical problems that getting it ready for release took over thirty hours of excruciating editing. I am so immensely glad I am finally done and can get on with my damn life! But also that I get to share this with you and hear what the rest of our scene(s) have to contribute to this discourse.
