The books of the moment for today's episode are The Jasmine Throne and The Oleander Sword by Tasha Suri. Just a forewarning for those of you listening, this is NOT a spoiler-free zone. We will be discussing these books in all of their glory, which of course includes revealing the ending. Tasha Suri is the award-winning author of The Books of Ambha duology, The Burning Kingdoms trilogy and What Souls Are Made Of. She has won the Best Newcomer (Sydney J. Bounds) from the British Fantasy Society and the World Fantasy Award for Best Novel. Her debut novel Empire of Sand was named one of the 100 best fantasy books of all time by TIME magazine. When she isn't writing, Tasha likes to cry over TV shows, buy too many notebooks, and indulge her geeky passion for reading about South Asian history. She lives with her family in a mildly haunted house in London. If you enjoyed this episode, I encourage you to leave a review on whichever platform you are listening on, if applicable. Lilian Horn is a published author who writes fantasy and fiction books. She has a bachelor's degree in biomedical laboratory science, and her writing is heavily inspired by her Scandinavian roots, the inspiration for her inclusion of folktales from her side of the world. Tune in to Am I Write? today to talk about Lilian's passion for incorporating mental health in her narratives, how she answers the writer's call while constantly battling chronic fatigue, and how resilience and adaptability have been the top factors of success in her life—and should be in yours, too! Resources InstagramTwitterWebsiteSheperd booklist: The Jasmine Throne by Tasha Suri King of Scars by Leah Bardugo About LilianHailing from the cold north of Norway, Lilian spends her summers glaring at the midnight sun and the winters freezing her backside off. When not doing either of those activities, she writes, manages her health, and entertains a very spoiled cat. With a bachelor's degree as a biomedical laboratory scientist and obscure game developing classes under her belt as well as her skill as hobby artist on the side, she makes the most of her days when she's not battling chronic illness. She's had ME since she was 11 years old, meaning she is exhausted all the time and has to manage her time and energy accordingly. She writes stories that take her far away from reality across distant lands. R. A. Salvatore is the reason her books often explore themes such as mental health and trauma and overcoming them while saving the world, and Salvatore remains to this day her biggest inspiration for writing, specifically his The Legend of Drizzt series (she even named her cat Drizzt) and The Cleric Quintet.
Veronica is very concerned about the Witcher news. Also on this episode: we have some prize winners to increase your to-read list. We pick a tentative fan name for y'all. We kick off our November read, Six Wakes by Mur Lafferty, AND our final thoughts on The Jasmine Throne by Tasha Suri. Also, Veronica might have Crow-vid.
It's our 15th anniversary! And we celebrated by making puns, discussing our favorite wearable fantasy and sci-fi weapons, and finding rumors about our hometowns. We also check in on our read of The Jasmine Throne by Tasha Suri.
[Ed. note: We tried to fix V's audio, sorry for the weirdness!] Veronica may have overdone becoming a friend of crows. She has more than 100 of them in her driveway now. Plus, we kick off our non-spoilery thoughts on The Jasmine Throne.
AND WE'RE BACK! Season 5 begins with our discussion of The Jasmine Throne by Tasha Suri, the first book in the Burning Kingdoms series. This book is a multi-POV tale that mostly follows Priya, a young adult with magical powers who's entire adopted family has been killed, and Malini, an exiled princess who is trying to steal the throne from her evil brother. The books for this first series of episodes were will be releasing were all chosen by our wonderful patrons! If you need some bookish camaraderie, join our Patreon! It's a pay-what-you-can model starting at $1/month. In other news: Dr k uses they/them/their pronouns and has for a while! Genderqueer, enby, non-binary/trans, and just plain ole queer all currently fit. Thanks for respecting this slash for correcting yourself the next time if you make a mistake, and generally for not being shitty and transphobic

If you were fascinated to see the human breast might, kind of, sort of look like a flower, then you will LOVE this book. Really. That is the vibe. The Emperor is new and fervently religious. The Princess is rebellious and loves her country. Men are in power. Men make decisions. Men have decided the Princess is to be exiled. Men cannot tame the power of the land and its people, even though they are trying. Princess Malini is out of options and her new maidservant, Priya, is a breath of new life. Politics are front and central here as the story of a conquered people, religion, and the unexpected loyalty of the land move in tandem with Emperor Chandra's horrific plans: Purify the women. Burn the women. How about they rise up instead?! Romance, Representation, and Publishing Andi and Lise discuss what's known as the lesbian fiction publishing industry (as distinguished from “mainstream” publishers that publish LGBTQ+ fiction) and the role of books that feature romance as a main plot in the industry. They unpack the scarcity of genre fiction in lesbian fiction that isn't romance-driven (but may include romance as a subplot) and discuss the pros and cons of being defined by a particular genre. They're excited to see more books that include asexual, trans, and non-binary characters in romance, but they'd like to see more characters like that in genre fiction that may or may not have a romantic sub-plot. Today, I have the pleasure of interviewing Tasha Suri. Tasha is an award-winning author, occasional librarian and cat owner. Her books include the Books of Ambha duology and The Jasmine Throne, (which is out now). When she isn't writing, Tasha likes to cry over TV shows, buy too many notebooks, and indulge her geeky passion for reading about South Asian history. She lives with her family in a mildly haunted house in London. In this episode Tasha and I discuss: Why she wanted to depict different kinds of strength and how she pulled it off. Her advice for tying together multiple points of view. (Her novel has ten POVs!) How to write a book proposal for a novel and other advice for getting published. Plus, her #1 tip for writers.
