Conceived, Written and Produced by Irfan Based on the book Pillars of Parallel Cinema by O.P. Srivastava Introduction to Podcasts: Pillars of Parallel Cinema In a world where Artificial Intelligence increasingly shapes our films, where voices, faces, and mannerisms are becoming deeply fake, we invite you on a journey back to a time, when cinema was a mirror to real life. This was an era where stories, characters, and settings were grounded in realism and human sensibilities. We are talking about the golden phase of Hindi cinema, known as Parallel Cinema-a movement unparalleled in the history of Indian cinema. Spanning from 1969 to 1999, this period stands out as the most creative and realistic phase in Indian cinema history. It gave birth to immortal films like Bhumika, Akrosh, Paar, and Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro, to name a few. The Parallel Cinema movement also introduced us to visionary filmmakers such as Shyam Benegal, Govind Nihalani, Goutam Ghose, and Sai Paranjape. Additionally, this era brought forth an array of brilliant actors including Naseeruddin Shah, Om Puri, Smita Patil, Shabana Azmi, Deepti Naval, Farooq Sheikh, Amrish Puri, Sadhu Meher, Surekha Sikri, and Mohan Agashe. In our new series of podcasts, Pillars of Parallel Cinema, we will explore some groundbreaking films meticulously selected by banker-turned-filmmaker OP Srivastava for his book Pillars of Parallel Cinema. Join us on this exciting journey to rediscover the essence of cinema that was not just a reflection of society, but also a powerful medium of expression that connected deeply with human experiences and emotions. The Book Pillars of Parallel Cinema The book offers a retrospective of 50 landmark films that defined Hindi parallel cinema, covering the period from the late 1960s to themid-1990s. It explores the emergence of parallel cinema as an alternative to mainstream Bollywood, emphasizing films driven by creative vision rather than commercial motivations. Srivastava highlights the socio-political contexts these films were set in and how they resonated with the middle-class audience by reflecting their realities. The book includes background stories about how each film was made and delves into the significant role these films played in shaping the "new wave" of Indian cinema. Filmmakers like Shyam Benegal, who contributed to this movement, praised the book for its comprehensive approach to documenting this important era in Indian film history. It could be a valuable read if you're interested in the history of Indian parallel cinema and the filmmaking processes behind some of its most iconic films. Buy on Amazon

Intersecting Heat: Visual Journeys into Caste, Gender and Labour in India

Dear listeners, this week we return to The Subverse. In this episode, Susan Mathews is in conversation with Bhumika Saraswati, an independent photographer, journalist and filmmaker. We look at how extreme heat is embroiled in caste and labour in India. We speak about Bhumika's present visual project which focuses on dalit women in agriculture in Uttar Pradesh, India and the impacts of heat, and an earlier short film she had done on workers in crematoriums during the covid-19 pandemic in New Delhi, India, an occupation which is surrounded by fire and heat hazards. The presence of both the women in the fields and the workers at cremation sites is a consequence of various historical, social and economic conditions and even government practices that reinforce caste-based labour practices. Whether it is discussions of those who are ‘most vulnerable' to heat in air-conditioned rooms, or people visiting a crematorium only interacting with the priest, these are people made invisible or seen through a mainstream gaze, in life and in media. Bhumika navigates the restrictions placed on her as a single woman visiting places with high crime rates, to explore the intersections of caste, class and gender that dalit women in agriculture contend with. In the midst of life-threatening levels of heat, limited protective gear and restrictive clothing, they grow the food that sustains us all. Bhumika captures the sisterhood between these women and the ingenious ways they make their limited resources work. We also briefly touched on how the caste system has restricted access to water and how certain kinds of violence are tied to the lack of basic amenities provided to certain citizens. In 2022, Bhumika was awarded a UNFPA-Laadli Media Award for Gender Sensitive Work and in 2023, she was awarded a Human Rights Press Award by Human Rights Watch (HRW) and the Journalism School of Arizona State University, United States of America for her short documentary film, Lives of Sex Workers and Their Children. You can find her on Instagram @bhumikasaraswati and on X at @Bhumikasara, and for the project on women, heat, communities see @heat.southasia. My name is Bhumika Phanindra. I am a senior at the University of Arizona majoring in Neuroscience and Cognitive Science (NSCS) with a minor in Biochemistry. I have been working with Dr. Melissa Halpern for the past two years to study the effects of secondary bile acids on Necrotizing Enterocolitis (NEC), a disease that is characterized by the necrotic inflammation in the colon. I am particularly interested to study the effects of secondary bile acids on tight junctions and if it increases susceptibility to NEC. Moving forward, I aspire to become a physician and contribute my efforts in a clinical setting. Aside from academics, I enjoy spending time with my friends, dancing and painting! The music for Thesis Thursday is from Crowander, the name of this track is “Your Eyes”

“I'd sit alone and watch your light My only friend through teenage nights And everything I had to know I heard it on my radio” (Radio Ga Ga: Roger Taylor, Queen, 1984) We couldn’t agree more. Radio was our friend. It united us. It forged our national identity. And it brought the world to our homes. It is often said politics, films and cricket are what bind India. Radio made that cohesion possible. In today’s episode we talk about Radio and its profound impact on our society. The iconic mournful signature tune and its history; the sabha on the eve of our independence, the legends who spoke on the airwaves, the stories of our victories in hockey and cricket and the songs and programmes that caught our imagination – we pay our homage to them. Because Radio built the new India. In spotlight we feature arguably the most versatile music composer of Indian cinema. A scholar of music who was versed with it grammar and experimented with its form in some of the landmark films, TV series and jingles of 70s and 80s. A genius who blended western classical aesthetic into Indian compositions. We end the show with our weekly reading, watching, and listening recommendations.

Welcome to the Season 2 of the Outliers Podcast. We start the year with a conversation with Bhumika Goyal, a 22-year old computer science graduate with a passion for the Free and Open Source Software movement (FOSS), and is already among the top-ranked Linux Kernel contributors. In a year when a lot of talk is going to be focused on job losses in the country’s over $100 billion IT sector, Goyal’s choice of career and passion for Open Source does appear brave. “I just love the way the open source community collaborates across different geographies and cultures, demographics,” she tells me. “While there is clearly gender bias that works against women in the sector, I am yet to experience it and I believe things are changing.” It’s tough for me to doubt her optimism, notwithstanding all the challenges faced by women in the technology and startup ecosystem that we keep flagging and chronicling at FactorDaily. Everything appears to be working fine until young, female programmers enter the ecosystem. It’s later in their careers that many of them face gender biases. One only hopes that Goyal and her generation of young, supercoders not just help build a healthy work environment with equal opportunities for everyone but also stun the software universe with their mankind-changing work. Do listen in and have a fulfilling year ahead!
