We're back! For our newest episode Pete and Dan are joined by Aparna Verna, the author of the breakout fantasy novel The Phoenix King, published by Orbit. Originally Aparna was invited onto the show to talk about Neil Gaiman's 1996 hit novel and TV show Neverwhere, but in light of the recent allegations against Gaiman, we've decided not to release that episode, though we may do so in the future as events play out.In this interview we talk to Aparna about how the Phoenix King came to be, about its evolution, its fusion of western fantasy structures and Indian mythological frameworks, and it crosses romance, adventure and fantasy to create a new angle on centuries-old storytelling conventions. We talk about Aparna's excellent social media game, one of the contributing factors to her book's success, and her successful leveraging of crowdfunding to self-publish the original novel on which The Phoenix King is based. Aparna Verma was born in Rajasthan, India, and grew up in the United States. She graduated from Stanford University with Honors in the Arts and a B.A. in English. In 2021, she self-published The Boy with Fire, which quickly went viral on TikTok, and was later republished by Orbit Books as The Phoenix King in 2023.When she is not writing, Aparna likes to lift heavy (arm days are her favorite), dance to Bollywood music, and find cozy cafes to read myths from ancient worlds. You can connect with Aparna on TikTok at @aparnawrites, and Twitter and Instagram at @spirited_gal.

When you've put your heart, soul, blood, sweat, and tears into building a world -- what happens when you then have to leave it behind? Most SFF authors will, at some point, close up their work in one world and start building a new one, but that comes with its own set of challenges! You know the old world so well; it's become comfy and familiar. The new world still has all its work yet to be done, and while it has the shiny lure of new discoveries, it also may seem daunting to start the process of figuring out how a world works all over again. In this episode, Fonda Lee and Melissa Caruso re-join us to discuss shifting focus from one world to another! Where do you start? How different do you need the world to be? We also chat about not just the mental challenges of clearing out one world to make room for the new one, but the emotional challenge of pulling yourself away from a place you love and know so well! Our Guests: Melissa Caruso writes books of murder, magic, and mayhem. Her published fantasy novels include the Swords & Fire trilogy (THE TETHERED MAGE, THE DEFIANT HEIR, THE UNBOUND EMPIRE) and the Rooks & Ruin trilogy (THE OBSIDIAN TOWER, THE QUICKSILVER COURT, THE IVORY TOMB), all from Orbit Books. Her debut novel was shortlisted for the Gemmell Morningstar Award in 2017, and her books have received starred reviews and made countless Best Of lists. Melissa is a tea drinker, larper, and mom, and lives in Massachusetts with her video game designer husband, two superlative daughters, and assorted pets. Fonda Lee is the author of the epic fantasy Green Bone Saga, consisting of the novels Jade City, Jade War, and Jade Legacy, along with a prequel novella The Jade Setter of Janloon and a short story collection, Jade Shards. She is also the author of the science fiction novels Zeroboxer, Exo and Cross Fire. Her most recent work is the fantasy novella, Untethered Sky. Fonda is a winner of the World Fantasy Award, the Locus Award, and a five-time winner of the Aurora Award (Canada's national science fiction and fantasy award), as well as a multiple finalist for the Hugo Award, the Nebula Award, and the Oregon Book Award. Her novels have garnered multiple starred reviews and appeared on Best of Year lists from NPR, Barnes & Noble, Syfy Wire, and others. Jade City has been translated in a dozen languages, named to TIME Magazine's Top 100 Fantasy Books of All Time, and optioned for television development. She has also written acclaimed short fiction and been an instructor at writing workshops including Clarion West, Viable Paradise, and Aspen Words. Fonda is a former corporate strategist and black belt martial artist who loves action movies and Eggs Benedict. Born and raised in Canada, she currently resides in the Pacific Northwest.

Ymir by Rich Larson, was one of our favorite science fiction books we read in the summer of 2022. Locus Magazine wrote glowingly of Rich: "If one tried to engineer a young writer who would embody all the core values, tactics, and ambiance of Classic SF while still conveying ultra-contemporary attitudes, ambiance, and affect, one could hardly produce a better candidate than Rich Larson"Rich was born in Niger and has lived in Grand Prairie, Alberta in Canada, Spain and the Czech Republic. Rich considers himself to be a speculative fiction author. He has written over 200 short stories and 2 novels Ymir and Annex, as well as the collection Tomorrow Factory. His short story “Ice” was adapted into an Emmy-winning episode of LOVE DEATH + ROBOTS (available on Netflix).Ymir (published by Orbit Books) is imaginative and compelling. It's a far future story of a despised prodigal returning to his icy home world of Ymir to track down a sapient war machine, break a mining strike and to confront the last person he ever wanted to see again—the brother who sent him off in pieces twenty years ago. By the way, when you check out the marketing it calls the novel a "retelling of Beowulf". Rich told us prior to recording that his publisher asked him what his next novel will be and he quickly replied "Beowulf in space" and it stuck with them. There is absolutely no need to read or refresh yourself on Beowulf. Well, just remember that Grendel is a monster (Also a terrific novel by John Gardner and an excellent restaurant and bar in Cambridge, MA!)And for those who don't want to jump into a new series, Ymir is a stand-alone novel. We think it will make a breathtaking film one day. We're big believers in doing all the work when it comes to the worldbuilding, but when it comes to putting it in the book, how do you know how much you need to have in the text? What do the readers need to know, and what goes in the ephemera or appendices? Who can help you figure that out? An editor, of course! So we sat down with Orbit Books executive editor Brit Hvide-- who's worked with authors like N.K. Jemisin, C.L. Clark, Django Wexler, Andrea Stewart and many more-- to get her thoughts on what really works in fantasy worldbuilding. Our Guest: Brit E. B. Hvide is a writer and Hugo Award nominated editor. She studied creative writing and physics at Northwestern University. Originally from Singapore, she now lives in Brooklyn with her husband, their son, and their dog. We might think of the desert as a wasteland, a place devoid of life. But that's not how Richard LeSueur sees it. He's spent over thirty years not only studying the wilderness of the Middle East but leading pilgrims out into its vastness for overnight excursions. He knows that in the silence and apparent emptiness of the desert, the richness of one's own spiritual journey can only rise to the surface. In this episode, we welcome back Melissa Caruso to help us think about the granular details of synthesizing your worldbuilding with your drafting and editing. Characters exist within their worldbuilding, and worldbuilding can drive plots, but how do you bring all those things together during the act of creation in a way that will feel seamless and natural to a writer? So you've got lore galore, complex sociopolitical tangles, and a history that reaches back through the ages. How do you show that on the page without infodumping? Marie Brennan and Alyc Helms, who together make up M. A. Carrick, help us explore building a world with deep historical roots while communicating that history in a way that feels natural and exciting for a reader. How do your characters think of their world's history? What different perspectives are there on historical events, and how have those perspectives shaped the present? Transcript for Episode 66 (with thanks to our scribes!) Our Guests: Alyc Helms prefers tea over all other beverages. They sometimes refer to their work as “critical theory fanfic,” which is a fancy way to say that they are obsessed with liminality, gender identity, and foxes (and tea!). Marie Brennan is a former anthropologist and folklorist who shamelessly pillages her academic fields for inspiration. She recently misapplied her professors' hard work to The Night Parade of 100 Demons and the short novel Driftwood. She is the author of the Hugo Award-nominated Victorian adventure series The Memoirs of Lady Trent along with several other series, over sixty short stories, and the New Worlds series of worldbuilding guides; as half of M.A. Carrick, she has written The Mask of Mirrors, first in the epic Rook and Rose trilogy.

====== Re(Surse) Literatură și feminism https://literaturasifeminism.wordpress.com/ Lumile noastre posibile: Antologie de proză speculativă queer-feministă https://literaturasifeminism.wordpress.com/2020/01/28/e-book-lumile-noastre-posibile-antologie-de-proza-speculativa-queer-feminista/ Octavia’s Brood, Ed. adrienne maree brown & Walidah Imarisha, AK press (2015). https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/23129839-octavia-s-brood The Dispossessed, Ursula K Le Guin, Harper and Row books (1974). https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/13651.The_Dispossessed Against Creativity, Oli Mould, Verso books (2018). https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/39728820-against-creativity Ecology of Everyday Life, Chaia Heller, Black Rose Books (1999). https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2695947-ecology-of-everyday-life Kim TallBear, The Critical Polyamorist (blog) http://www.criticalpolyamorist.com/ Sylvia Marcos, Femeile indigene și cosmoviziunea decolonială, trad. I’m joined in this episode by THE MASK OF MIRRORS author M.A. Carrick, which is a pseudonym for the co-writing team of Marie Brennan and Alyc Helms. The first book in the ROSE & ROOK fantasy trilogy, THE MASK OF MIRRORS follows Ren, a girl who forcibly escapes the slums of Nadezra to save herself and her sister from life in an abusive gang. She later returns to Nadezra, though, under a new identity, and with a new goal: Con her way into the most vulnerable noble house and amass her own personal fortune. But Ren soon learns that her marks are playing plenty of games of their own. Some may win her affection, while others weave layers of deceit. Figuring out who to trust becomes crucial as Ren finds herself caught up in aristocratic feuds and social upheaval, between virtuous lawmen and charming crime lords, and in the company of a mysterious vigilante. All while nightmarish magical corruption threatens this, the city of dreams, and all of Ren’s carefully laid plans. It will take all her talents and cunning to ward off destruction—because, in Nedezra, fortune favors the bold, but magic favors the liars. Editors play a crucial role in creating the books we love. They acquire books for publishers and help authors polish their manuscripts into the wonderful stories we pick off the shelves. And that's far from all they do. Joining us this week are Diana Pho (Story Producer at SerialBox) and Nivia Evans (editor at Orbit Books). They explain the ins and outs of editing, offer advice to writers, and predict where the future of the speculative industry is heading. Travis interviews authors Marie Brennan and Alyc Helms about their latest book from Orbit Books, The Mask of Mirrors. Marie and Alyc are writing the Rook & Rose trilogy under the joint name M.A. Carrick, and their masterful worldbuilding shines through in this story of con artists, nobles, and vigilantes. The discussion takes a deep dive into worldbuilding, touches on tabletop games that spiral out of control, and just might feature some truly terrible accents. Travis interviews author and sound designer Essa Hansen about Nophek Gloss, her debut space opera from Orbit Books. It has a bit of everything: an epic quest for revenge, a vast multiverse full of alien creatures, and a wholesome crew that becomes a found family. Essa and Travis discuss sound designing the Marvel Cinematic Universe, how to write found families, and the process of creating a bubble multiverse that bends the laws of physics. About Essa Hansen: Essa Hansen grew up in beautifully wild areas of California, from the coastal foothills to the Sierra Nevada mountains around Yosemite, before migrating north to the Canadian Rocky Mountains. She has ranched bison and sheep, trained horses, practiced Japanese swordsmanship, and is a licensed falconer. She attended the Vancouver Film School and works as a sound designer for SF and fantasy feature films (IMDB). Essa lives with her British Shorthair cat Soki in the San Francisco Bay Area. Essa Hansen is the author of NOPHEK GLOSS. This debut science fiction adventure follows Caiden, a teenage mechanic who discovers his simple but highly regimented life is actually one of servitude on a hidden slave planet. When his entire colony is sent to slaughter, Caiden alone survives, fleeing the vicious creatures who devoured his people. After taking refuge in a strange, abandoned vessel, he is saved from capture by a band of explorers, and whisked off planet—with only trauma and rage as mementos of his previous existence. Among the stars, he discovers a multiverse of strange lifeforms, alien cultures, and unfathomably powerful foes. Torn by grief and guilt, accompanied by a quarrelsome found family, and in possession of a dangerously unique ship, Caiden wrestles with his own mysterious origins while facing a singular question: how can one boy take revenge on a vast, evil interstellar political entity? NOPHEK GLOSS is an ambitious and imaginative space opera novel that arrives November 17th from Orbit Books.

Travis interviews fantasy author Andrea Stewart about her latest novel, The Bone Shard Daughter. It's the first book in a new epic fantasy series from Orbit Books, set in an archipelago empire where the islands are slowly sinking and the reclusive emperor controls his subjects through his twisted bone shard constructs. Andrea and Travis talk about treating magic like computer programming, what she learned from querying for 13 years, and the real-life bone shard that inspired the novel. About Andrea Stewart: Andrea Stewart is the daughter of immigrants, and was raised in a number of places across the United States. Her parents always emphasized science and education, so she spent her childhood immersed in Star Trek and odd-smelling library books. When her (admittedly ambitious) dreams of becoming a dragon slayer didn't pan out, she instead turned to writing books. She now lives in sunny California, and in addition to writing, can be found herding cats, looking at birds, and falling down research rabbit holes. I’m joined in this episode by Andrea Stewart, author of THE BONE SHARD DAUGHTER. This outstanding Fantasy debut novel features seafaring adventures, a unique and cruel magic system, an ambitious Emperor’s daughter with holes in her memory, a wanted smuggler chasing a specter from his past, magic animal companions, creepy mystical constructs, and so much more. THE BONE SHARD DAUGHTER arrived in stores on September 8th from Orbit Books. About Andrea Stewart Andrea Stewart is the daughter of immigrants, and was raised in a number of places across the United States. Her parents always emphasized science and education, so she spent her childhood immersed in Star Trek and odd-smelling library books. She now lives in sunny California, and in addition to writing, can be found herding cats, looking at birds, and falling down research rabbit holes. About THE BONE SHARD DAUGHTER The emperor’s reign has lasted for decades, his mastery of bone shard magic powering the animal-like constructs that maintain law and order. But now his rule is failing, and revolution is sweeping across the Empire’s many islands. Lin is the emperor’s daughter and spends her days trapped in a palace of locked doors and dark secrets. When her father refuses to recognize her as heir to the throne, she vows to prove her worth by mastering the forbidden art of bone shard magic. Yet such power carries a great cost, and when the revolution reaches the gates of the palace, Lin must decide how far she is willing to go to claim her birthright – and save her people.
Travis interviews fantasy author Django Wexler about his latest novel, Ashes of the Sun. It follows two siblings on opposite sides of a magical war, kicking off the Burningblade and Silvereye series from Orbit Books. Django and Travis discuss the art of receiving critique, the dubious ethics of training young children to become Jedi, and how to design a fantasy world to fit the story you want to tell. About Django Wexler: Django Wexler is the author of flintlock fantasy series The Shadow Campaigns, middle-grade fantasy The Forbidden Library, and YA fantasy The Wells of Sorcery. His latest is epic fantasy Ashes of the Sun. In his former life as a software engineer, he worked on AI research and programming languages. He currently lives near Seattle with his wife, two cats, and a teetering mountain of books. When not writing, he wrangles computers, paints tiny soldiers, and plays games of all sorts. Amanda and Jenn discuss tragic romances, political intrigue, and nostalgic summer novels in this week's episode of Get Booked. This episode is sponsored by TBR: Tailored Book Recommendations, The Faceless Old Woman Who Secretly Lives in Your Home by Joseph Fink and Jeffrey Cranor, and by Harper Perennial, and Orbit Books, publisher of visionary author N.K. Jemisin’s new novel, THE CITY WE BECAME. Subscribe to the podcast via RSS, Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or Stitcher. Questions 1. Now that it's February (the longest, shortest month), I'm looking for books that have an eternal summer feeling. I'm almost done with Call Me By Your Name and have read A Month in the Country by Carr twice. Can you recommend any books that are sort of nostalgic and dreamy? Bonus if they're works in translation. All the best, -Kristi 2. I have marked this as time sensitive due to the emotional nature of the request. Very close friends of mine just had their second child this morning. They were expecting a little girl but upon delivery it was discovered that their baby is intersex. Would you be able to recommend any books about parents with an intersex child or stories about intersex children/adults? We are all reading as much as we can in an effort to learn the language and history of intersexuality but I would love to add some semi-fictional or fictional stories to our repertoire! Own voices would be wonderful and picture books for kids would also be welcome. Baby’s big brother loves to be read to so it would be nice to add some gender diversity to his bedtime story rotation. All of us have the outlook that knowledge is power so the more we take in now the better we can support this baby on this wild ride called life! I am thus far aware of Middlesex by Jeffery Eugenidies and Annabel by Kathleen Winters as books with the theme of intersexuality. Thank you so much! -Rebecca 3. After 15 years in an emotionally and sometimes physically abusive relationship, I confessed to a beloved friend who'd seen me through it all that I was more than a little in love with him. He reciprocated (!), I set about exiting my marriage, and a joyful, restorative romance ensued. Unfortunately, it couldn't survive the chaos of the long, vicious divorce- I don't think anything could've. I mourned for a few months, going through the motions of motherhood and work, but the time has come to rejoin the world. Therapy and mindfulness exercises have been extremely useful, but reading myself back to life has been most effective. With that in mind, give me some tragic romances for catharsis. Books that have worked best are The English Patient (Ondaatje), The End of the Affair (Greene), and The Sparrow (Russell). Also the film Only Lovers Left Alive. I read pretty much everything except romance, and in that case, it's just a lack of familiarity. If I could possibly get recs before 4/10 that'd be amazing- my six year old daughter and I are escaping the city for a week in rural PA at my dad's. -Kristin 4. Hi! Somewhat time sensitive. Elizabeth Warren has just dropped out of the 2020 presidential race and I'm grieving. Can you recommend any books to give me hope for a world in which misogyny doesn't prevent the most qualified candidates from having a real chance at leadership? Fiction or non-fiction work, I'm not even sure quite what I'm looking for save something that can inspire me and give me hope when I'm feeling fairly hopeless. Time sensitive because I want to be able to get back in the fight to elect Democrats in November as soon as possible. Thank you for the great recs, as always! -Lindsey 5. With Covid19 dominating news cycles, I keep thinking about the one historical fiction book I’ve read set during the Spanish Flu outbreak in 1918. (As Bright As Heaven by Susan Meissner). Do you know of others? I also recently read The Dreamers by Karen Walker Thomas which is sci fi around a pandemic. That was intense to read right now but I’d probably do it again so whatever flu outbreak stories you want to share. Thanks! -Brooke 6. Hi Jenn and Amanda. I am sorry for dropping such the time sensitive question, but I hope you might be able to help me anyway (at least to drop me an email). I am having serious anxiety attacks due to the coronavirus and the country where I am living now (the Netherlands) is about to go on lockdown. To cope with the anxiety, like many people, I turn to books. In particular to historical fiction filled with political intrigues. I have just finished re-reading Tales of Otori by Lian Hearn for the 15th time, and I NEED MORE. Could you send a couple of recommendations for an historical fiction filled with political intrigues, whimsical and evocative descriptions, and characters that you love then you hate then you love again? Bonus points if not set in Europe and part of a series of more books (I tend to get a tiny bit obsessive). Other books that I’ve Ioved are the Secret History by Donna Tart, The Ministry of Utmost Happiness by Arundati Roy, and the Sally Lockhart series by Philip Pullman (especially the Tin Princess). Oh, and the reason why I have such a short time gap is that I would like to have the book during Easter holidays, so that I can distract myself from not being able to go home to my family. Thanks for the help! -Alice 7. Light fluffy books needed desperately in the current time!! I read many genres, but with all of the Coronavirus news happening (as I say everyday the world seems to collapse and then we get up and try to do it again the next day), I realized I need some light fluffy books to get through the next few weeks/months. I am a children's librarian, so I have read many kids books. I am open to most anything light. Please help fill my reading needs. This chapter concerns TSR West, an effort by TSR to open an LA office devoted to producing comic books, an effort that failed rather impressively. It is the product of a dozen interviews with professionals from comics, gaming, and Hollywood, and as far as I can reckon, it is a tale entirely untold until now. Image courtesy Orbit Books.

Danny, elated by book three, continues to embrace the expansion of Dalglish's heart-pumping blade symphony. But, how are the new characters? The old cast? And can Alyssa Gemcroft catch a break? Sean Grigsby talks with Gareth Hanrahan, author of The Gutter Prayer from Orbit Books.
Gareth Hanrahan is an author and role playing game writer/designer. His new novel, The Gutter Prayer, is a brilliant mash-up of fantasy, alchemical steampunk, and Lovecraftian horror. It follows three unlikely companions – a thief, a Stoneman and a ghoul – as they are pulled headlong into their ancient city’s hidden magical war. The Gutter Prayer is available now in stores everywhere from Orbit Books.

Danny takes a look back at all three books and reflects on the stunning difference it makes when an author hits their stride. Allen interjects with some comedy as Danny still had a few grips with character direction. Yet, Danny couldn't help but praise the author for the amazing villain and stunning narrative progression! [Warning] This episode contains explicit language and explicit themes. Listener discretion is advised. Danny returns to David Dalglish's world of Shadowdance and this time, instead of ranting and raving all his lonesome, he's got a sarcastic color commentator to annoy him. Allen and Danny discuss tropes in the thief genre of fantasy and Danny is hyper critical of established real character arcs. Despite that, the angrier of the two finds jubilation in Dalglish as a writer and prides him on his growth. This episode features author Vivian Shaw, whose debut novel — Strange Practice — was just released from Orbit Books. Strange Practice introduces Dr. Greta Helsing, a normal human physician working to keep the supernatural community not-alive and well in modern-day London. Having inherited her family's specialized medical practice, Greta can barely make ends meet with her treatments for local mummies. But when a sect of murderous monks begins to scour the city's underbelly, intent on killing her unusual friends, she must team up with her undead clients to keep them — and the rest of London — safe. Filled with fresh twists on classic monsters and imaginative mash-ups, this new series is a perfect fit for fans of contemporary fantasy.
Victor Mosquera is a concept artist working in the entertainment industry. He currently works at Ubisoft Toronto and his list of clients include companies such as Universal Music, Tor Books, Orbit Books, Volta and One pixel brush. In this episode, Victor discusses: -How he forged his own path, even though becoming an artist in Colombia is difficult. -The experience of learning from Nicolás Uribe. -The idea of building your own tribe, learning from the people around you, and finding new opportunities along the way. -Working with Seven Lions for his album art. -How his style developed. -How important his personal work is for him to detox. -Having a “fuck it” mentality when it comes to creating your own personal work and wondering what other people are going to think. -How sometimes it is okay to be the “master of none,” and to just experiment with new things – you never know what doorways will open up to you. -The difference between having a carefree attitude and an attitude without cares. -Becoming obsessed with art and working all night long, but having to be careful with that the older that he gets. -How he balances his time and how the limited amount of time that he has also influences his changing style. -The difference between making art and posting it to social media just to stay relevant and making measurable goals for yourself. -Making a physical product and giving it away as a gift if nobody buys it. Victor's Final Push will inspire you to use the energy that you have right now – you won’t have it forever! Quotes: “The important thing is to start doing it. Once you’re doing it, you can learn from your mistakes and improve on top of that.” “I don’t think you choose a style. I think it’s a reflection of how you see life and how you see your work, and it happens organically.” “For me, my personal work is like a detox.” Links mentioned: Nicolás Uribe Ross Tran The War of Art: Break Through the Blocks and Win Your Inner Creative Battles by Steven Pressfield Manage Your Day-to-Day: Build Your Routine, Find Your Focus, and Sharpen Your Creative Mind by Jocelyn K. First Story: “The New Deal” by Trent Jamieson “You hear about the new Deal?” Jacobi asked, crouching down by the nearest body on the flat corrugated iron roof. Ulmer shrugged. “Just rumours, nothing definite. Last one wasn’t so good. These two aren’t going to benefit.” He took a step back from the bodies, careful to stay on the line of nails marking the beam beneath, the roof was rusty; it creaked with his movement. Jacobi grinned and brushed flies from his cracked lips. “These blokes been dead a while.” SF writer and Silent Motion Picture Actor, Trent Jamieson should be 111 years old, but is only 41 on account of TEMPORAL RADIATION. He lives in Brisbane with his wife, Diana, where he wrote the Death Works Trilogy published by Orbit Books. He is the author of the Death Works Series. They’re about Death – you know, the Grim...
